User/Channel Services

NickServ

The NickServ IRC service is used to register or control your nickname on IRC. You can register a nickname, drop a nickname, even add it to a group of registered nicknames. Note that you dont have to register your nickname if you're only going to visit us one time. It would be a good idea to register your nickname if you are planning to stay on the network for a long period of time.

To register a nickname, use: /msg nickserv register [password] [email]. Choose a password that is not easy to guess. Registering a nickname allows you to keep your nickname, so no one else can steal it. When you come back on IRC, you need to identify yourself to NickServ to properly use your nickname. Use /msg nickserv identify [password].

To drop a nickname, use: /msg nickserv drop [nickname]. This will drop the nickname you registered from the NickServ database. It will be free to re-register again.

For more information, check the IRC Guide for more on NickServ. Explore the available commands by doing /msg nickserv help or specific commands with /msg nickserv help [command].

ChanServ

ChanServ allows you to register a channel you have created. This prevents other people from taking over your channel, and allows you to do several things, like maintain lists of people who should be auto-opped (+o), auto-halfop (+h), etc. You can even set your channel to only let registered users enter.

Registering a channel is as simple as registering a nickname. Use: /msg chanserv register [password] [channel to register] [channel description]. The channel will be registered under you. Note that doing ChanServ commands like registering, you must be registered with NickServ first.

Dropping a channel is simple: /msg chanserv drop [#channel]. Note that only the founder (the total owner, usually the person who registered the channel) can do this, and that user must be identified with nickserv first.

Explore the many commands of ChanServ with /msg chanserv help.

HostServ

Hostname Services, or HostServ, can assign you a custom virtual host (or vhost) to mask your address that people can see when joining/parting a channel or when doing a /WHOIS query.

You must first request a hostname, use: /msg hostserv request [hostname-to-request]. This will send a message to the server. If all goes well, use the /msg hostserv on command to activate it. If you get messages from MemoServ (memo services), then most likely it means your request was rejected, then probably because it contains something hateful, or is similar to another requested vhost, or it has already been taken. In any event, message me at ota@animenfo.com, and we'll try to figure something out.
