Yet another of those unknown WMT titles that were popular 10 or 20 years ago. In Scandinavian countries this was probably more popular. This time it focuses on Finland during the WWI . Based on the work of Finnish author Auni Nuolivaara and titled "Paimen, piika ja emanta" ,Katri belongs to one of the anime describing the everyday life of the characters, often influenced by political events.

I have to say that from the first episodes I saw I was impressed because in no other anime comes with so much detail the (Finnish) daily life in the countryside during the early 20th century. Fortunately it doesnt lapse into something educational just for younger viewers but offers also an interesting story about Katri. Now I havent watched further where various important events occur (Russian Revolution, end of the war, Finnish independence) but the series focuses on the daily lifes mostly. Fortunately, just as in the novel "Pride and Prejudice" this actually makes the series better than had they thrown in outside factors. The bucolic atmosphere gives this anime an air of uniqueness, far surpassing in that similar series as Anne of Green Gables or Little Women. Only the characters could have been a little better developed but it would be difficult to maintain a balance in everything.
Backgrounds and character animation is of high quality and one thinks Finland comes alive. The cows behaviour is as natural (and funny for that matter) as a real cow. Overall animal animation is excellent. Especially the dachshund.
Music is perhaps the best in any WMT title since it features samples from Sibelius. Music integrates very well with the series mood.
The fansubs quality is very good and they have detailed info about the series but I would have preferred to watch it in Finnish with English subs, just like Nils Holgersson in Swedish.
A pity it isnt widely known to the younger viewers. If you seek excellent characters and voice actors look no further than here.
Mamoru Oshii sums it up brilliantly in an interview commenting on Miyzaki and Takahata:
"His (Takahata's) other works aren't my cup of tea to start with. He is very particular about descriptions, but to me, they all look quibbling. But in truth, as a director, I was most influenced not by Conan, but by Anne of Green Gables. I was astounded by how broad the range of direction can be. Because, there was no story. It's just washing dishes, or watching a carriage go by. And it's a long (scene). But, this has tremendous power. In that sense, my eyes were opened."
