I had heard about this title many years ago but it was treated in such a way as to resemble anime adaptations for children in the likes of "Heidi", "Three Musketeers", "Around the World in 80 Days" and "Pinnochio". Not that they're bad shows but despite the nostalgic feeling they do not guarantee that rewatching them 20 years later as an adult will make them as enjoyable.

On the contrary shows like "Mysterious Cities of Gold", "Future Boy Conan", "Nils Holgersson", "3000 Leagues in Search for Mother" etc are as appealing to adults now as they were to children many years ago.

And now that we get the chance to watch them again in Japanese and unedited, they surely deserve a second watch and leave most of todays anime to dust. Such series should be the measure to judge new anime and not the opposite.

That does not mean to dump all of todays anime but it is different to watch something new by having learned from the past and to dismiss all the old titles because someone is ahistoric (that isnt valid only for anime of course).

From this very interesting review above I see this title was very famous in Japan and helped further making L.Montgomery's novels popular. Unfortunately I havent read any of her novels (Project Gutenberg has them all) and when I'm in the mood to read again I have some Dostoyevsky books on the shelf ready to be devoured.

It was also popular in Germany, however they changed the intro and the music without realizing that it was actually this intro that had such an appeal in Japan, namely the romanticization of nature.

I am also sure that the Japanese voice actors were much better than any dubbed effort and that becomes more obvious in the last episodes.

Despite some flaws, which depend whether you like novels or series with such topics, I have to admit that this is one of the most flawless series of its genre I came across. Even those who read the novels testify that this series represents the world and characters of the novel pretty accurately and faithfully.

The design of the surroundings is very artistic and the characters are very nicely designed too, even if some anime Tv friendly concessions had to be made to the character design. Anne doesnt have blue eyes for instance.

However the main factor that makes this series memorable is actually how each character grows and develops in the span of 5 years. Anne is initially a clumsy and edgy 11 year old who fails to rouse anyones sympathy with her ramblings. But she slowly turns into a mature and likeable character who totally changes most of her opinions and makes major decisions. Very few series have such a good development for a main character. Her friends (especially the female ones) too though to a lesser extent. Same goes for the adults and Marilla and Matthew (though he remains mostly the same) change slowly from a hesitant and complaining couple to the persons who end up loving Anne and finding it unbearable when she has to move.

The final episodes as with most WMT titles have some saddening moments but this is the reason the series is the more better. The word "catharsis" is unknown to most TV producers today. And before censorship reigned supreme on cinema and TV children and adults actually had the fortune to watch such kind of quality animated shows

The series for the time it was made could deserve a perfect 10, especially if you like the novels. But to me a near perfect score suffices.

Sure it could have been made as a live-action series but if animation succeeds in turning better than live-action then it has fulfilled its purpose. And how couldnt it when many legends of anime participated in the series production.

A worthy watch and it is suprising how little attention this series gets from the younger generation. To judge better the so many anime remakes one must see the original first.

Also Montgomery's other popular novel "Emily of New Moon" was also adapted to anime so if you liked Akage no Anne, give a look at that series too.

Great show and great animation for its time. As with Little Women, I had no idea these stories were taken from books so it was a great way for me, and I'm sure a lot of other kids, to get into reading these classic books. This is actually better than Little Women and also very touching. I loved the episode when Anne tasted ice cream for the first time.

This is very classical, based on Montgomery’s novel with the same title. The story almost follows the original novel, and several episodes are added. I was impressed by this anime, and have read several books of Montgomery. Comparing to today’s anime, the quality of the animation was not good, and sounds were not good either. However, it will make you feel nostalgic feelings, and make your heart warm.
This is not a kind of anime to make you excite, but this heartwarming story worth watching. This is recommendable for school kids, and I also recommend you to read the original stories.

it's not the best anime ever, you know,,, but it's good enough for me,,, some episodes are plain boring because they're meaningless,, others are very captivating,,, it tends to get better as it progresses. starting from episode 47 and on, it bacomes very touching,,, wish it was all like the last 4 eps.

This is a great anime for all ages, especially if you have ever been a fan of the books. Parts of the anime were a bit slow, but I figure it's not as if this was an action adventure anime. It is based on a wonderful book and should be treasured for the lessons it teaches and the emotions it conjures.
