| After the TMS very good adaptation of Sans Famille, Nippon Animation answered with En Famille, this time featuring a girl instead of a boy. Though by the time they ran out of ideas in 1996, Nippon Animation re-adapted Sans Famille by turning the male lead intro a female.
Now I have to say this is one of the best 70's animated series. Do not let the animation be a hidrance. If it was just about animation I would have abandoned anime a long time ago anyway -recent titles included-. What it lacks in animation it makes up with the excellent characters and story, very dramatic in some episodes.
Yet it also retains doses of humour, features two excellent animal characters (a funny dog named Baron and a greek donkey with a greek name) and a rich story.
In the first 15 episodes Perrine and her mother travel through Bosnia, Croatia, Italy and Switzerland to reach Paris. In the second half Perrine reaches a small industrial town north of Paris and there the story turns a little different. Yet in both arcs the series reaches brilliance and some episodes are very dramatic, not only in the last episodes and even more than some of the series of today that are supposedly for adults claim to have. Coupled with the cute and melancholic ending theme it is even more memorable.
It only takes some episodes to get used to the change of the settings. The first arc is interesting and depicts Perrine and her mother as wandering photographers in 1877 Europe wandering from village to village, Perrines Indian mother dressed in an indian sari, taking and selling photos of the villagers. It even depicts the political situation with their encounter with some Austrian troops in Croatia.
The japanese cast were excellent yet again. The series was popular at the time it was broadcast in many countries but today it is one of the series that for the sake of political correctness and consumerism tend to be neglected.
Yet it is one of the few series that is so rich in teaching important values to the viewers and at the same time showing how a good anime should be directed.
The character design is simplistic yet somehow it looks rather unique and once you're used to it it offers its own dramatic and funny touches. The dog especially and the donkey are of the best animals to appear in the 70s titles
I was introduced to anime thanks to these series and not through Pokemon or Dragonball. Or else I would have now completely different preferences and regard with disdain the 70s titles.
No matter how much you search in todays anime you will not find such a good quality title. I cant stop to praise this series but suffice it to say that unless you really have enough of todays anime you will not appreciate this title. And when distributors arent interested or promoting such titles it is even more difficult to watch them.
The fact that it depicts the hardship adults and children had to endure in the textile factories wouldnt be that appealing to todays chidren. It even shows a mother losing her children. So todays anime and cartoons should be focusing on popstar wannabees or sword wielding samurais instead or silly toilet humour.
Only problem would be if youre tired of watching high quality titles because I guarantee (and many others who've seen all the episodes) that this is yet another good title.
It is only sad that today this title is considered a gem instead of being more popular and introducing children and the whole family to anime, just like 30 years ago.
Credit to C1 anime who began subbing the anime though it is also available in other languages. Because not only animes popular in the US deserve to be promoted.
After having read the book I can say that after ep 15 where the book takes place the adaptation is very faithfull. An excellent series for an excellent novel. A rare combination.
