"There is happiness for those who accept their fate, there is glory for those who resist their fate."

Sometimes there are shows with premises, which look like total failures from the first sight, but develop into something magnificent from the second. It was the same with Full Moon wo Sagashite, it is the same with Princess Tutu. A duck turned into a girl to dance ballet and save the prince? Heh, this can't be good.... can it? Oh yes, it can, it can be so good that adult men will forget their beer and will unconsciously start practicing ballet, while looking at the greatness of Princess Tutu. Not convinced? I wasn't either, despite seeing hundreds of positive reviews from both people I don't know and people I respect. But now... Well, now I punch everyone who says that Princess Tutu sucks in the face... In my mind, of course.

It doesn't even matter if you like shoujo ar not, Princess Tutu cuts every single lame shoujo detail out (no flying stars, no annoying mascots) and leaves only the tastiest core in. Heck, this show is not only an ingenious shoujo, it's an ingenious fairy tale as well.

At first it felt kinda childish, but as it progressed i was impressed by the level of thought and depth the series had

The best points would be how it mixed so many things so well:-

-Ballet and body language
-Famous classical musical pieces for background music
-Many elements from fairy tales and famous theatrical plays.

All that in a mix of comedy, mystery and tragedy, pretty epic ^_^

Also the cast is very interesting and fun to watch, whether they are joking around, dancing, fighting or talking it is always interesting to watch them ( my favs has to be Ahiru the main character, her two friends and their ballet teacher Neko-Sensei with his marriage obsession XD )

Other than that the series is a fantastic work of art, worth watching few times actually ^_^

If dancing is one way to allow others to understand feeling that Princess Tutu is one of the more emotional anime to have ever been produced. With a story that grows deeper with every episode and classical musical a resounding overall theme, this anime should not be missed.

Princess Tutu is an anime based on a fairy tale (or many, at that), therefore, it would only make sense for it to make use of a lot of the classical fairy tale themes. At the same time, Princess Tutu is also cleverly weaved in with many other personal, one-of-a-kind charms and details.

It is yet another series that might have an overly childish appeal at first...the kind that I always initially turn away from and then, later find myself magnetized to...

This anime had me within the first five minutes, starting from the moment a foggy lake scene came up with "The Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy" tinkling in the background. You are then immediately thrown into the plot, almost instantly confused. But don't worry, that sense of confusion is intended, so that you are just as lost to whatever is going on as the main character herself is.

A couple of the ideas are continuously carried through from episode to episode, getting a bit repetitive - this story is based on fairy tales, after all. Despite this fact, I don't consider this anime to ever get too sappy, as other fairy tale-inspired stories seem to result in.

In the end, I fell in love with practically the whole cast and the overall series itself. Princess Tutu is an adorable, charming, and surprisingly worthwhile series.

(HNS and Afk fansubs. Of the best fansub efforts I watched. If only they hadnt messed up with the names)

Reviewing this title is a bit difficult since classical music and ballet hardly interest me. I was only familiar with some of the classical literature and folklore the various works were based.

Since when regarding animation of fairy-tales Europe holds the lead (Disney comes second) I was surprised to watch an anime that had some of the elements that made those European masterpieces (notably from Eastern Europe and Russia) memorable and all this from a 2002 anime. Tweeny Witches anime producers made also a nice effort, but Princess Tutu is far better.

If the character design wasnt so anime-ish and there werent some cliches typically found in anime in characters and story, this could have become a masterpiece.

My only problem were episodes 6-13 that I found very boring. A pity because the first episodes were simply amazing.

The second arc was also very interesting and the ending very original, truly adding a dark element in fairy tales, something most children novel and TV adaptations tend to ignore.

I'm no expert in commenting the technical elements and how the musical score and the performances of the various ballets were implemented. Visually and musically they certainly made this anime unique. The plot had something in common with Revolutionary Girl Utena, but only regarding the weirdness of the characters. Princess Tutu is on an entirely different and much better league than Utena.

Of all the characters Ahiru (especially in her duck form), Kraehe and Fakir were the best. Prince Mytho is developed slowly episode to episode but till he becomes memorable the series ends. Drosselmeyer and his two marionettes are also good. Some side characters in the individual episodes were annoying, with the exception of Neko who was very funny. Also the appearance of various animals make the series very funny.

One of the animes that will totally change your initiall expectations. If you like fairy tales (something necessary in today's shitty world) this is a must-watch. Or else there are enough splatter, sex and gore titles to appease your lust and sadism.

Forget the Brothers Grimm, Princess Tutu is the darkest fairytale that has ever been told *lol*
Based around Tchaikovsky’s ballet "Swan Lake" (which in itself was based on an ancient legend of Swan maidens, which in itself is a variation on the hagaromo/angel legend!!), Princess Tutu brings to life the tale of the Swan Princess and Prince Siegfried in the most imaginative and gorgeous way I have ever seen.

At first, I was trying to avoid this show, I thought it was just one of those kiddy animes, actually, it was animax's fault because they said in their commercial that this is about a girl who wants to have a dance with a prince and I thought "what the heck is this show?" it seems too childish and not to mention pointless. But then, after a year, I finally decided to watch it and I found out that all of my expectations are wrong, there was something more than meets the eye.

The story is about Ahiru, a duck which transforms into a girl when splashed with water (regardless of temperature). She, including Ru, Myuto, and Fakir are attending in a performing arts school to learn how to be ballerinas. And when I thought the story just revolves around that, a mystery comes along, we can see Myuto as emotionless as a living dead, he doesn't laugh nor cry because he is cursed, his heart is shattered into pieces and so his feelings disappered and Ahiru tries to help him find the fragments as she wants to see him smile but Fakir and Ru are standing in her way.

The story is divided into two parts, the chapter of the egg and the chapter of the chick (the tv series has 38 episodes in total but Animax aired the dvd version which has 26 episodes) The first chapter concentrates on Ahiru helping Myuto in gathering the fragments of his heart, here we can see Fakir pretty much as a villain. In the next chapter, there are sudden turn of events, Myuto is not himself anymore and Ahiru and Fakir joined forces to help Myuto and to find out the truth behind the mysterious events.

Plain ballet student by day, Princess by night... this anime storyline follows the classic fairy tale formula, highlighted by a series of climactic ballet scenes with Ahiru in the Princes Tutu form. We have your typical unrefined, clumsy (both emotionally and physically), and ungraceful female protagonist who, deep down inside, wants to love and attention of 'her prince' and therefore wishes to draw him out from his inability to express emotions. Furthermore, Ahiru is also able to transform from a duck to human to a princess depending on various situations.

This fairy tale ballet idea is quite unique and has no inherent flaws in its original idea. Despite the lovely ballet dances and music, Princess Tutu's childish fairy tale just does not suit me at all. Aside from watching the pretty ballet 'show-offs', I was unimpressed and unmoved with the fairy-tale story that was being told...

*On a scale of 1-10 I rate 5 as average, please note this when reading my review*

When my best friend sat me to down to watch Princess Tutu with her, I honestly thought I would not like this series at all, however I was wrong.

Princess tutu is pretty different from your average anime, and uses a lot of fairytale-like principles throughout the story.

The animation for this show is not the best I have seen, however is decent, and in most cases is well suited to the type of story as are the character designs. The background work is also one very well. The plot I felt was slightly weak however was still engaging.

The music in this anime, is related with the "ballet" type that this show is, which uses some classical pieces of music at times, I don't really like classical music but at the same time it was fitting to the show.

I found Princess Tutu to be fresh and different and did enjoy it, however I must say this show is not for everyone. But people looking for an anime which is different from your standard anime series should probably give this show a go and may find they actually liked something they didn't think they would.

What a great series!!!!! Definitely a permanent fixture in my top 10 now that I've finished it. As great as this series is, it is hard to explain what makes it so great without giving spoilers so I will just stick to the categories available.

Animation - The backgrounds are awesome. Very fitting to the story and the mood of the show. The character design looked a bit ugly at first but after a couple of episodes it really grew on me and is very fitting to the look and style of the show. Another aspect I was quite impressed with in this series was that the digital effects did not have a "platic-y" look. There wasn't a high contrast between the bright colours and the dull colours, which can create a "stuck-on" look. Everything looked appropriate and mystical.

Sound - The opening and closing themes of this anime are really wonderful. Just about every other sound effect is borrowed from ballet and classical music and those fit with the show beautifully.

Story - The story is great. It reminds me of Shojo Kakumei Utena (my favourite anime) in its structure and plot devices. Nothing is what it at first seems in this series and that makes it all the more interesting. The development is full of twists that you will not see coming and that will really keep you on your toes.

Character - I loved Ahiru-chan in this. The voice actress was wonderful in bringing her to life. Other characters are also given a chance to shine and the character development is really interesting. The more notable ones being Fakir, Mytho and Kraehe. Drosselmeyer, Neko-sensei and Azura-chan are also great and incredibly funny.

Value - As soon as ADV works itself out with the release pattern of this show, I am getting a copy. This series is definitely worth having in anyone's collection and anyone from any age can enjoy it.

Enjoyment - Great show with great story, characters, sound and animation do make for one highly enjoyable series. Like I said before this series is great :)

Aucun point faible a mon gout. Explication :

I watched this series on the recommendation of a friend that this series contained many stylistic elements atypical of a mahou-shoujo type show. Although the first half of the series was typical and fomulaic, the characters and story of Princess Tutu become unique and unpredicatable as the story progressed.

The character Drosselmeyer added an unpredictable Wes Craven "Scream"(the movies) style to the characters. Not in the sense that the characters wished stab each other, but the constant charcter self analysis about their roles in the story kept the story fresh and interesting.

As a clearly magical girl show I would only recommend this show to people who can easily stomach the first 10 or so sugar coated episodes. For myself after I hit episode 17, I couldn't stop watching till I reached the end.

I really enjoyed this one. Truthfully, I put off seeing this for a year because it just didn't seem like a sort of series you could be compelled to. Everyone dances ballet, whether they're good or evil... or strange animals in tutus. It doesn't even matter what situation they're in--like in school OR fighting the "bad guys."

The first reason why this anime caught my attention was because of the sentimental opening. From the looks of the show, I thought it would've been a lot more fun and hype and full of weirdness. But everyone's expressions were filled with a lot of pain and sometimes small, hopeful smiles. I was really moved.

The next reason is the plot. Wow! I was always a fan of fairytale stories so I was not disappointed in this area. If I said more, I'd be spoiling it. ^^

This has nearly no violence at all. No rough muscular men with hair turning yellow screaming odd phrases and destroying the planet--noooo. So if you like a lot of violence and action, this is probably not the type of thing you'll go for. However, if you like a lot of angst, several funny scenes to lighten the mood, and an interesting plot that will captivate you, I highly recommend this.

so far, it was among my well loved anime, not only that its so funny(it makes me fall off the sofa!), it is also so romantic (heart warming...).
i made me remember fairy tale stories. It is something about love, frienship, loyalty. a classic story set with modern interpretation.
worth my time.....

With an almost embarrassing cuteness and a premise fruitier than Fruits Basket's (and an even fruitier title), Princess Tutu sounds as if, well, it sounds as if you shouldn't be touching it with a nine-foot pole. However, its sparkling charm and eye-popping originality makes it an anime that should be seen. But then, I expected nothing less of a show that's bold enough to have male ballerinas and call itself Princess Tutu.

i loved this anime. and to think i would have passed on it if it hand't been showing for free. i later hunted it down cause i just had to have a copy to share with people i knew. it also made me look more closely at magic girl anime in search of another gem.

firstly, and most important, this is not your average magic girl anime. it may look like one, and be titled like one, but it is so much more.

the story take central place here. it's so complex, complete and wonderfully layered. i can imagine the writers taking a great story idea and layering it with smaller, equally worth-while stories until you can't predict the core story until you've gone through the encompassing layers. think onions... and this story could make you cry too as you peel away the layers. and to top it off, it's got one of the most unexpected, yet appropriate, bitter sweet endings.

the "once upon a time/mukashi-mukashi" intros are also worth mentioning, as they act as a preview of what's to come, represented as a believable short fairy tale on its own. very thought-provoking stuff here.

one last thing that i though was great was the lack of a recap episode, despite story heavy series almost always requiring one. instead they used specials for recapping... stroke of genius.

lets see what else do i need to cover.... animation was good, although the storyline was somewhat undemanding of it. art style was very appropriate for the story. sound & music fit the ballet theme, but didn't update or add anything to the classical music.

a must watch for anyone after very good, very dark stories. a masterpiece. and whoever titled this anime should be shot!
