Do you like incest stories and gothic angels fighting each other? Then this manga might be for you. I read several volumes and I'm glad I did not buy any volume of this nonsense.

Based off reading 9 volumes - I stopped here because it got really uninteresting and boring for me. Rather, I did not wish to spend all the energy trying to keep track of every single dialogue that happened between all the millions of angels that seemed to be in this manga since most of the dialogue/interactions seemed to be unimportant and uninteresting.

Despite the presence of demons, Gods, Hell, Heaven, and angels, this is not really a religious manga. There aren't annoying priests or nuns running around trying to do battle in the name of God. Instead, if this is your thing, it is about the civil war between the different ranks of angels and demons with the love story of two siblings stuck smack in the center of everything. Again, we have the recurring themes of Fate all throughout this manga and we never really know what part of the story is fate and what is breaking fate. However, right as things began to become interesting at the part where the Messiah is awoken in Setsuna, things start getting sooooo complicated that I really didn't have the motivation to read anymore.

It may be true that I am just not reading this manga in detail enough that I do not appreciate the character interactions and story development, but if I cannot gain initial interest in the story, what's the point of looking for that one "great" part 10 volumes later? I certainly did not enjoy the progression of the story and it was really difficult getting into this manga. Despite the gorgeous artwork, I found myself struggling through the reading. Perhaps the way the scanslation was set up made for unintuitive reading flow, but I just found myself looking at the artwork.

Despite the numerous characters and all the different facets of characters in this war of angels, I found each individual character to be extremely shallow. But putting this aside, even the main character himself gets tiresome. In the beginning, he is this whole tormented person because of his forbidden love. Then later on when he goes into Heaven to seek for what he lost he is this happy-go-lucky type personality with "great charisma" and appeal. What happened to the dark character in the beginning that had violent rage? Certainly there were those epic moments when Alexiel popped up, but those moments were rare and furthermore they didn't shine any light upon Alexiel's past character, who remains a mystery through overhalf this manga.

Really, this manga is too complicated for its own good. It didn't help that all the pretty angel males looked the same and it was sometimes hard to tell when a scene transition took place. I'm sure that if you read this like a book and took your time reading each line and deciphering each word and name and legend that you might get some more story elements out of it, but in the end I couldn't do it... just not interesting enough for me. The plot may be thick/intricate/and twisted but it sure wasn't fun.

Angel Sanctuary.. an entire 20 volumes. It feels like so much more though, like 20 years. I'm sure this has to do with how the series is constantly evolving. Characters constantly growing, the breadth of the world deepening, and the amount of different emotions and ideas running wildly. The first three volumes are so different from the next three and so on and so forth until I felt like this was many different series all packed into one. A life's journey- pushing the envelope on so many levels. It starts out so simply, a boy's unfortunate lot in life. Having troubles at home, has a love for someone that many would find shameful. But he continues on- he even makes a best friend and just tries to get by. It isn't too long until his life takes some drastic turns. He is visited by otherworldly creatures- or rather, angels and demons. Each one claiming he was in his past life a beautiful angel named Alexial. She tried to start a revolution and was punished by god. Will Setsuna be forced to follow that same path again as the world of angels, humans, and demons begin to blend into one another.. ?

While Angel Sanctuary has angels and demons, heaven and hell, it does not rigidly follow the bible by any means, nor claim to be some sort of interpretation of Christianity. Even the author Kaori Yuki herself says that the angels in this story are not how she would invision angels in real life. Like many works of fiction, Angel Sanctuary takes an idea with alot of potential and spins a miraculous world out of it. One of cruel regimes and carnage. One of bottomless love and beauty. Much like life, for every gruesome and provacative scene there is an endearing one. The series manages to contain both tragedy and a good, wry sense of humour which is pulled off so naturally.

There are countless characters, a very decent number of them having complex multi-layered personalities. Some seem to be exaggerated in a more spellbinding way- for instance, a malicious dictator beyond measure (Sevotharte) a lovable person with always questionable motives (Mad Hatter) a man driven completely over the edge of reason and empathy.. but still managing to just barely be touched by a pure and loyal person (Rosiel and Katan) there are at least a dozen more examples, each at least as memorable. Many blend the lines between good and evil, and keep the reader guessing as to what is going to take place within them. The world is, after all, hardly one of black and white.

Like the array of characters, there are an array of genres that slip in and out of Angel Sanctuary. Action, romance, horror, drama , the aforementioned wry comedy, and the entire epic universe linked together by one thing- the need of the savior in Setsuna.

Over all my years of reading manga (about three ^^;) I've come to realize how important excellent layouts, storytelling and pace can be. How they decide the enjoyablity of the manga and the value of re-reading it over again. There are some that only manage to accomplish some of these lofty goals. A good series doesn't have to be perfect, but a series that comes close is what really makes manga such a worthwhile hobby. For me, Angel Sanctuary really accomplished alot and remains an unforgettable series.

Very rare for me to give ANYTHING 10/10 but Angel Sanctuary deserves it. THe character art is simply gorgeous, the story is so gripping (i couldn't put down my latest volumes until i had finished them all) even with the weird themes that are in that seem to put people off, such as the incest, homosexuality ans blaspheme. You also can't help but love the characters. Even the characters such as the demented Rosiel and tragic characters such as Kato. I have seen a fair few mangas but this is the one that has gripped me the most. Well done Kaori Yuki! I must get some more of your works!

This is one of the best comics I've ever read. It was long but it was worth all the time. Truly memorable. Sure sometimes the design as well as the awkward start were a little dissapointing but that did not take away anything from its value.

If you liked ''Angel Sanctuary'' check also from the same artist the short story
''Boys Next Door''. It is also a very touching story. Also ''Count Cain'' and ''Yami no Matsutei'' and other short stories as well.

Actually very brilliant if one wishes to delve deep into a manga which has not yet fully graced our screens. Definitely lots of adult material, but hey... Lucifer makes this whole story worthwhile.

love Kaori Yuki's work... doesn't she help with Clamp? much better than the anime! it explains characters more, doesn't leave out essential characters needed for the plot (like the anime does!), and I just really love it! I actually wanted to find the manga after being dissapoitned from anime... I said to myself, "I know the manga will explain so much more!"

Within the crazy world that is 'Angel Sanctuary' we find not only a great story, but a wonderful manga. Kaori Yuki's ability to make her characters seem so human and real (Even if they in fact are not supposed to be human) is remarkable. And, the components that make everything up add a nice touch to what would seem to be a mess, mostly because the plot itself is just confusing.
Angel sanctuary is defiantly something to pick up if your looking for an interesting story, great art, and good characters. It's full of suspense, action and longing. I would also like to warn those who can't take certain taboos such as incest, homosexuality, transsexuality and a little asexuality. Overall, Angel sanctuary gets 5 stars, you just can't keep a good manga down.

The Angel Sanctuary story is one of my favorite Mangas. Readers follow the exploits of Setsuna, a young man who possesses the reincarnated soul of the Arch-Angel Alexial, as he fights through heaven and hell to find his beloved sister (and i do mean sexual love).

Kaori Yuki's story introduces many taboo topics ranging from complex sexuality issues, sibling love, demons/angels, heaven/hell, and even the god concept. The audacity of the plot is refreshing and well-written and the artwork is equisite.

Unfortunately, as of this review, Angel Sanctuary is not released in the US, but a fansub does exist. Hopefully, we will see a complete translation soon; also, there are 3 well-done anime episodes that follow the first 3 and part of the fourth mangas.
