| The Red River/Anatolia Story is a historical romance manga much similar in story pacing and story progression as Legend of Basara. Our female protagonist is whisked off into 1300 BC Turkey region and soon becomes caught up in that kingdom's politics. The queen of the kingdom will do whatever she wants in order to make her son the future crown king and requires the sacrifice of Yuuri's blood in order to cast a curse on all the other princes in line for the crown. However, the first person Yuuri meets is this womanizer Prince Kail who hears her case out and ends up always protecting her. Yet as war breaks out between kingdoms, through a series of events Yuuri is viewed as the goddess of war and things start getting complicated. To make things even more confusing, both Prince Kail and Yuuri have mixed feelings over each other - especially because Yuuri has to eventually go back to her own time and country. This is where things take off...
So far, I've read 11 volumes and I can say that I am hooked. I was carried away by the impressive storyline and the awesome characters. Not only do they have a very realistic romance relationship developing between Prince Kail and Yuuri, but all the politics and war in the surrounding regions really enhance the conflicts that Yuuri faces. Even though at the heart of it, this is a romance-oriented manga - the amount of time spent in detailing the various war campaigns, the side-characters and all the political troubles are very welcome and enjoyable.
Despite the somewhat repetitive situations of Yuuri x Kail 'save me' situations and Yuuri getting kidnapped by some other Prince who want her and then having this whole tension of her virginity getting possible stolen situations, I found each scenario to still refreshing and novel. First of all, each prince has a different political affiliation and second, each prince has a different personality - which allowed these somewhat repetitive situations to be viewed differently. Next, the way Prince Kail acted in order to bring Yuuri back despite the burdens of responsibilities he has of his country AND the way Yuuri manages to be both strong and yet exhibit this 'damsel in distress aura' is quite interesting to watch unfold. It is just amazing how Yuuri manages to indirectly seduce all these guys just because she's so down to earth and practical - instead of all those other princesses who just want to impress by being beautiful.
Overall, Red River/Anatolia story is a very well-done manga with a strong story backing and interesting romantic situations. Although it is quite obviously meant to develop the situation between the prince and yuuri, there is a lot of other events that go on in the background that enrich the world around them. What I enjoyed most were 1) how yuuri manages to impress everyone around her just by being herself and 2) the strength and preservation as well as the difficulties the two have throughout all the tough opposition both internally and externally. This is a great simplistic manga read that doesn't require too much thinking but still manages to get the feelings across. Definitely a sleeper hit.
