It doesn't appear that most of the reviewers who've seen this show get the other joke only those who have children will understand: Grandparents just looooove their grandchildren, and have every right to dote, spoil, and show them off to everyone, even if it means blowing the Japanese defense budget, bullying the Japanese Prime Minister into submission, or putting the clumsy kawaii antics of their children in front of the media. It reminds me very much of those American kid's shows that worked on two levels, as kid's entertainment, and humor only appreciated by adults. The "is it in the budget?" jokes, the occasional otaku joke (you did notice that the tanks, aircraft, and other weaponry are based on model toy kits, and that the alien capsule is a Japanese gashapon capsule toy?), and other adult-aimed humor make this series more than a superficial saccharine-coated one-digit-aged children's show.

Still, if you're a teenager who's too "cool" for kiddie shows and has someone else paying their bills, skip it. This series is here for the perfect couple: the extremely young granddaughter, and the grandparent who has to watch tv with her.

Mindless drivel is the best way to describe this anime! Overly sweet, tries too hard to be cute and I think Ken Akamatsu needs a slap for even writing this junk!
Having said all of that, if you can manage to survive the first half, you might just get some enjoyment out of the second half ^__^

At first glance, the idea of combining kawaii magical girls with mecha sounds pretty stupid. However, the series doesn't take itself seriously. Mao-chan, Misora-chan, and Silvie-chan manage to defend Japan from the kawaii forces of evil through sheer dumb luck. What they call defense I call child endangerment.
Unfortunately, no matter how good a creative team is (many of the same people worked on Love Hina,) some ideas can't be done well.

I got this cheap, and I knew my sister would like it. So the fact that I enjoyed watching it immensely was a nice surprising bonus. Yes, it is over-the-top kawaii, and the premise is childish. If such things are offputting, then maybe this isn't for you. But it is also full of humour and parody, which had me in stiches most of the way through. Overall this is a brilliant anime - just remember, "Ecchi does not an anime make".
Just be ready to fast forward the "transformation" scenes... they can get tiresome after a few times.

This show was absolutely hilarious. The humor revolves alot around parody but some of the gags had me in stitches. Like the time when the teacher and Mao were communicating in morse code during class. It is much more than just a cute kids show. A lot of the humor would not be understood by kids or foreigners. I also loved the music. The piano background music was great and reminded me of Charlie Brown. Highly recommended if you dont have any preconceived notions.

Although I'm definitely not in the demographic for this one, it's hard not to be mesmerized by the überkawaiiness of this series. The story is crazy (the granddaughters of the heads of military are earth's best defence against the cuddly attack of "kawaii aliens") and characters are wacky though well-meaning; it's only Kagome-kun/sensei who are down-to-earth enough to sort out the situations. The background music was kind of strange though, it seems someone was told to play random notes on a piano. The reason I started to watch this anime was the supposed Love Hina references, and they are in there as well.

Possibly the most annoying thing I have ever seen. Not that it's without its uses, for instance, if you need to clear a crowded room, or keep a group of obnoxious, idiotic otakus occupied for a little while.

Combining HIDEOUS EAR-RENDING voice acting with totally pointless formulaic cuteness and stupidity, banal humor and a rather unfocused target audience (is this aimed at little girls or drooling brain-dead Akamatsu lolicons?) and you're bound to get a load of fucking crap. Well God damn if the math didn't work out stunningly in this example! If I had a daughter under age 10, I would steer her as far away as possible from this pile of hippopotamus feces and to something less likely to leave her a braindead vegetable.

What on earth is this? Okay seriously, WHAT IS THIS? This is a CRAPPY anime. They do not tell you what's going on, like who the people with cat ears are, or who the fat monster thing is that shoots stuff out of his head. It is so boring, and stupid, and unrecomended.

Ground Defense Force Mao-chan is such a bogus show that it's funny. Elementary school girls protecting japan from the near-endless onslaught of cute aliens. This show is also so cute and cuddly that it's hard not to like it. Coming from the creator of Love Hina, this show is incredibly entertaining considering the basis. The plot is paper-thin and rarley takes itself seriously, but that's exactly what makes this so good =)

Follows a basic formula and works fairly well, but I say I don't feel compelled to watch it again. It is quite predictable, but in the end it's meant to be fun, which it is. The Love Hina reference in the latter part of the series was sweet. However, the plot is wafer-thin and never explained, in fact it seems like an afterthought. The three girls rock but the rest are fairly laughable. And honestly, does that much time ened to be spent on a trnasofrmation scene each episode?! Beats Bottle Fairy, that's for sure. Something kawaii and funny, worth watching once, but that's about it. The saccharine wears off very quickly.

Hehe so funny!! I loved it! Mao-chan is sooo cute and the opening is excellent! Ken Akamatsu is great. I like this a LOT better than Love Hina. I will protect the peace of Japan!

Ground Defense Force! Mao-Chan is a very cute series. Although it was clearly created for a very young audience, adult anime fans can still enjoy the change of pace from the violence and ecchiness of most recent anime.

The characters are lovable and well animated. My only real complaint is the repeatativeness of the music and how similar the voices of the three main characters are (not to mention the transformation scenes). Aside from that though, it was a very enjoyable series. While the stories are mostly designed to include a moral by the end of the short episodes, they are still entertaining. Still, the overall storyline is anything but deep. Anyway, unless you're anti-kawaii, give it a try.

Whilst I have to accept the fact that Mao-chan is a kids show, I often had the feeling that the show would be so much better if it didn't restrain itself so much.

What I mean by this is: Azumanga Daioh. Watch it and you will understand. What Mao-chan needed was more of the off-the-wall, cruel humour that AD often used to good effect. It almost does, but it holds itself back, because it is purely a kids show, as opposed to a more general viewing type of comedy.

That being said, there are many things about Mao-chan to like. For instance, it has kawaii aliens. And it has even more kawaii aliens. And the dog that detects the kawaii aliens (Kikumonji the Third, or something like that). And Sylvie-chan, who would've been so much better had she just had a few fewer neurons (then she could hold a candle to Osaka ;).

Gack.... My brain is melting......................................................... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

This anime is hysterical. Just an all-out festival of ridiculousness (three rival military commanders put their granddaughters to work combatting "cute aliens (think Pokemon mixed with Sanrio characters), mostly due to departmental rivalries and the desire to prove whose granddaughter is the best), with lots of jokes and whatnot. Some of the jokes get repetitive and lose their luster, especially if you watch several in a row (as each episode is only 12 or so minutes, counting opening and ending themes). However, the strong character design and overall carefree humor make this one pretty darn entertaining. Plus, as a freely (or near-freely) available fansub, you get WAY more bang for your buck.

Mao-chan is one of those shows I think people either love or hate. If you go into it expecting another Love Hina, be very disappointed (except for the episode where Naru makes a cameo as the owner, with her husband Keitaro, of Hinata Inn). It's a kids' show, the only enemies they face are kawaii aliens, who like the name says are pretty cute. The long, drawn-out transformation sequences get old at time, but hell, just about all shows aimed at kids have them. It's a good cast, though, and some of the episodes are pretty funny. Not the best anime I've ever seen, but still strangely addictive. Although I want to smack Misora for tacking "dearimasu" onto the end of everything she says...why can't she add -su or -t'cha or something shorter and less obnoxious?

I'm not big into cute things, but I must say that this is very cute, and authentic. I mean they are 8 year olds, they act like it. And with the news out there that this may be in fact a spin off/sequel to love hina, my current favorite show. I look forward to that episode/s.

Many genres out there, if you are not a fan of the genre, don't review it. hmm, Pita Ten you say? I need to see that one.

I like cute things and all but I'd prefer something like Rizelmine over this. There's only so YOUNG I can go as far as little kid animes. The sqeaky voices drive me bananas, the cute aliens is something one has to like, and although I love Akumatsu Ken's artwork and I loved Love Hina, I just can't get myself to watch anything past episode 1.
