| Saikano, also known as She: The Ultimate Weapon, is a 13 episode romantic drama anime released in 2002. The most noticeable feature of Saikano is the fact that it isn't afraid to kill off its characters.
The animation studio responsible for Saikano is Gonzo Digimation. Gonzo has a tendency to significantly simplify its character designs and overall details, especially during highly animated scenes. Some viewers prefer this simplification, but for those who have been following my reviews would know that I view such a degradation in detail at key moments as nothing more than slacking on the job. In addition to this, almost every character in Saikano appear to be blushing all the time. I have never held a high regard with respect to Gonzo's character designs, and this anime does not change my mind in any way. There are some computer generated graphics and animation, but nothing overly impressive. Overall, Saikano was a disappointment for me in terms of graphics and animation.
Although Saikano features a decent cast of voice actors both in its English and Japanese versions, the repetition of phrases has the tendency to become extremely frustrating. The vocabulary of some characters featured in Saikano appear to be limited to a dozen words, and characters with a wider knowledge of words tend to repeat themselves over and over. Still, the background music are appropriate, and the theme songs suit the anime.
The storyline of Saikano is rather interesting. The first few episodes can be described as boring, with development happening at a slow pace. However, half way through, the pace suddenly picks up, and the level of philosophical complexity in Saikano improves dramatically. The anime then becomes ruthless at killing off its cast of characters, and would have been one of the best romantic dramas ever released, if not for the occasional inappropriate actions of its characters. The ending was, in my opinion, strange and unfitting. But the sudden shift in storyline is significant and noteworthy, and is what makes Saikano worth checking out.
Apart from the awful dialogue, the characters featured in Saikano are well voiced and have very distinct personalities. The actions of some characters at certain stages are inappropriate, which ruins the mood of the scene at times. Character development is also lacking, but given the rate at which characters die in the later stages of the anime, the lack of development is understandable.
Saikano fails in many areas. However, its unpredictable ruthless storyline makes it stand out from other anime. I think Saikano is worth checking out for its story, and I would recommend it to fans of romantic dramas, since they might enjoy the first half of the anime which I found to be purely boring.

| Saikano is an interesting anime. It's story revolves around the theory of war and its possible effects.
The story starts off slow and gradually gain speed. It's 13 episodes so it's expected. The beginning seems childish and may turn some people off but this anime is closer to reality than one may first think. Unlike those hero stories with good things happen in the worst situations, Saikano makes things blunt and so closer to reality. Although this is a vague description, I'm keeping it this way to exclude possible spoilers that would ruin the story and hence the anime itself.
The anime is very subtle. As explanations goes, this anime gives very little until the end. Although some viewers like those type of technique in story-telling, it usually confuses viewers in the end more than being helpful. I found myself dumbfounded in some of scenes.
In order to make this simpler and to make it quicker for those who want a quick skim, I'll be using the field review section.
Having "Mecha" in the genre make me not want to watch it but I did any ways and am grateful because there was barely any Mecha in the anime!
Mecha reminded me of Gundam and with all the mobile suit spin-offs, I've had enough of it.
If you have any questions as to whether this anime is worth the time or anything, feel free to message me here.

| Well now, the fact that no show or movie has never made me cry and Saikano has says alot for me.
Now I would have to agree with many below me in saying that the animation and sound was not the best but it wasnt the worst.
Now the story is what got to me. The people dying and Chise wanting to stop fighting but she couldnt since it was the only way she could live. Shuuji losing the his friends. I got sucked in so much that I thought what it would be like if that was the world I lived in; and Im not embarassed to say that I cried like a baby. The story did leave a lot of unanswered questions but those questions only came to me after I was done with the series.
I didnt see any real character development. Unless Chise becoming a bigger and more deadly weapon counts. While I was watching the show it didnt matter to me though. I was too caught up in it to really notice. I could barely watch the show since I was crying in almost every episode after episode five.
I dont think I will rewatch the show but I took a lot away from it. I walked around all day after I watch Saikano thinking about what our world would be if it was like that. If something could do that to me, I think it a hell of an anime.
Now, you may call me a crybaby(or other worse names) but Im glad I found Saikano and watched, Im proud to say that it made me cry like an angry baby. No other show has been able to do that. Not Air, not Kanon, or any show I have watched since.

| Saikano is a very interresting anime that leaves you with a lot of question unanswered. I was just searching for another good anime to watch and I came across this one. I thought it looked interresting enough from the cover. I started watching the first few episode and although I didn't know what was going on I tried to convience myself that all my questions will be answered. Sadly, they didn't. lol
The animation was not the best. At first you think they have awesome animation cause of the background and the sound quality. Then you see Shuuji one of the main characters and you can't help to ask yourself, "wtf." All the characters all always blushing for some odd reason. Other than the humans, I didn't see anything else that really bothered me.
The sound quality was OK. Again it wasn't the best. I don't really pay too much attention to the OP and ED. Some of the sound effects sounded real. Like walking on snow and some of the fight scenes.
The story is weird. In a couple of episode you know there's a war going on, but you'll never know why. Your main characters that the story is focused on is Shuuji and Chise. They're apperantly dating since the start. Chise isn't a normal little girl. She just happens to be this ultimate weapon agaisnt the Americans or whoever is invading. Shuji founds out her little secret and the story begins from there. There's going to be many things that will happen that will probably make you upset. A lot of characters that you will see will die. There's also sad moments for our main couple too that will be weird and hard to take in. According to many people the last episode will make you cry.
The characters were rather hard to review. It seems that not all of them actually do any development thru the story. This anime doesn't give a chance to almost anyone to do some character development since they die like flies.
Overall, it's not a bad anime to watch. It sort of like a weird Evangelion. But instead of giant robot monsters you get this girl who apperantly is the ultimate weapon. I would say if you don't have anything to do to watch it.

| Just to get something out of the way, If you don't like 'weird' or sad anime, you won't like this. 'That being said, the anime is great'...is what I'd like to say, but really it was nothing special, a little below average even.

| It seems like there are huge discrepancy in people's take on this series but I guess it depends on personal taste as well. Personally I have watched a lot of anime/manga for the last 10 years but this one didn't come out half as bad as some people make it out to be.
Sure there are a lot of unanswered questions but then again, does everything need an explaination? If you filter your mind from trying to understand everything in the series about how they come to be, and try to focus more in the abstract side of the plot, you can probably enjoy it as much as I do.
The story deals with the mentality of frontline soldiers - kill to protect, longing for a normal life, unable to distinguish between their human values and their object value, in other word a tool in a wider conflict - and the mentality of the people so dear to the soldiers at home.
While watching this series, the thought about what child soldiers who are forced to fight in wars all over the war might have in their mind, the mentality of soldiers fighting in conflicts they might/might not believe in, their dear ones at home ... all those thoughts ravel in my head while I was watching the series.
I admit the series leave a lot of things unanswered but stop for a second and try to think of another movie/anime that convey those feelings I mentioned in the above paragraph so vividly without much exaggeration? WWII movies have all the nice actions and all but do they really explore all those emotions so deeply?
To sum it up, this series isn't about a romance, it isn't about action, it isn't about comedy, it IS about war and the little emotions little pieces of tools known as soldiers have in them and the pain and suffering of all the people involved.
War is never a pleasant thing, regardless of reason - even a noble one as protecting your homeland, the important people in your lives.
Sure my mark for this series is unrealistic, but in the end, does all those factors like animation, sound etc matter when what it boils down to is how much you enjoyed it? I enjoyed the series fully and hence I give it a 10/10.
I know my English literature is limited and I thank you all for bearing with my rumblings until this line.

| Can a man love a weapon? Can a weapon love a man? Machines have always been tools at man's disposal but what if the love of your life was indeed a tool? Saikano walks the line between wars and mankind and does so brilliantly.

| I was very interested in this series since I found out about it some months ago, so as soon as I saw it on AnimeNfo's database I downloaded it to see for myself, since it had really good rating and it was a series of my favorite genre. Romance, war and a girl that's a weapon, seemed really interesting, not to mention drama! My bread and butter in anime choices.
Download complete, I open the media player and here it is, SaiKano (oO)! Was almost too excited, I felt a shiver! I had really high expectations of this series.
The first thing you see is -if I remember correctly- the background animation, which is decent. I was kinda impressed of this first picture. Then, I see a guy with the W-O-R-S-T possible design EVER. His cheeks are blushing 24/7 (well in this point I didn't know, since it was snowing and I guess it should have been red from the cold weather) and his face is like a triangle, no details at all. The animation is not good for a 2002 anime, either. I skip this fact, trying to convince myself that anime is not all about looks, it's the sentimental factor that counts and, of course, the plot. I really believe that, it's a fact, good design and animation would give it more positive points, but anyway, it's not the primary thing I'd look for in an anime in any case. Too bad that the emotional field was even weaker, and the story as well...
Let's see the major flaws:
First flaw: the relationship between Shuuji and Chise. A fake. A relationship that noone cares about, and I doubt them two do even. A relationship that started in a "why not?" kind of conversation. No feelings at all, not important relationship. Bad start for making a strong relationship that the audience could care about breaking up and shredding together with the main heroes to keep tied.
Flaw second: A story that doesn't make sense. A war that doesn't make sense at all and NOTHING gets explained in any of the 13(if I remember correctly) episodes of the series. A girl that's a weapon. Why is she a weapon? What led her being one? What's her specs as a weapon? You won't find the answer inside the series.
Flaw third: A very worthless try from the anime to make you cry. A story that doesn't make sense, a relationship that is more shallow than an empty carecup and sad things happening all the time one after the other. Well, this is not a way to make the audience cry, you know. At least not any experienced viewer. A guy that would watch this anime as his first series ever maybe would be moved since he never saw any quality anime. But not anyone that has watched more than a handful of anime.
Fourth and worst flaw on the long run: "The last love song on this planet". A phrase the anime tried to make looks really important, something the viewers can think about as the anime's sentimental overview in a way. Not a catchy phrase in the first glance. A flawless diamond that includes all of this anime's beauty in a simple word struct. I can't find words to describe this abomination. The people really tried to make this phrase important though, they really did... I can safely say I've never seen such a poser phrase in an anime before, not to mention unimportant and worthless anime... Could shine if the anime itself was good, though. Too bad.
I could continue like this forever, but because the time is money and SaiKano doesn't, honestly, deserve any of it -it already drained 13episodes*20mins_each_ep = 260mins of time, in which I was trying to convince myself it would become better in the next few episodes or was whining for wasting my time downloading and watching it after 10 episodes of crap- I will stop here.
It's seriously the most disappointing series I ever watched, since I originally had high expectations of it.
I've never watched a really bad anime before SaiKano, except Mouse. Now those two make a new category named "trash" on my hard disk. I keep them to laugh to myself for the time it took me to download.
But it actually did something good for me. It told me downright straight that I should never ever again care about the hype and other people's opinions in other anime. And it made me find some underrated diamonds that way. Thank you SaiKano.
Conlcusion:
>>Don't buy.
>>Don't download.
>>If your friend recommends it to you, ask him if he has ever watched any other dramas.

| Not a fun series. Cross Chobits with Grave of the Fireflies and you get this--in a bad way, like take the annoying/unlikeable parts from each. Add some melodrama and messed up relationships from KGNE, which IMO had nothing good to offer except a good looking babe who is absent in this series. Lots of doom and gloom. A war that goes on throughout the series but is never explained. A ridiculous premise about a girl who is an ultimate weapon on the side. Can comfortably be watched in 2x speed, and I sometimes managed 4x with very fast reading. I couldn't have finished at 1x, it would've been asking too much. Not recommended. This series blows, just stay away and watch something else. At least it's short and wasted not too much of my time, especially with fast forward.

| Saikano had a lot of potential, but it fell through as the plot unfolded. There really wasn't much to get attached to. It was just average. If you are looking for an anime that will make you cry, check out Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien or Chrno Crusade. I picked this anime up for its drama, but I wasn't nearly as touched as I was with those two. I just couldn't get into it. Usually, I will finish off a series as quickly as I can, but I put this one off. I didn't really care to see what happened to the characters. I did finish it eventually, and I miss the time I lost watching this. There are numerous anime options out there that you should check out before this one. If you don't have anything else to watch, then go ahead and watch this one. It is not the best, but it does have some interesting moments.

| I'm one of those overly sensitive people who actually goes into floods reading novels and actually enjoy stories that's touching enough to make me cry. However, Saikano is a far cry from that. The producers obviously tried to make this anime as tear-rendering as possible by killing off characters one by one, which failed horribly. The reason: The producers don’t give enough time for the audience to relate to the characters before killing them off. So by the time third character died I wondered, “Ok, someone died. Who’s next?”
The art was horrible. Shuuji looks too old, Chise looks too young and they seem to be blushing all the time! Blushing once in a while is cute, but if it’s done all the time it’s downright irritating. Sound was considerably ok though. The idea of a girl turned into a dangerous weapon was original and would have been interesting but they screwed it up. The characters are dull and uninteresting, the art is disappointing and the story is too sad and intense. They should have thrown more some humor and cheerful parts to give the audience a relief from all the crying. There were a few parts which I slightly enjoyed but the rest was frankly disappointing. This anime has a lot of blanks, for example, they should have explained why the government or something chose her, of all people to become the weapon. Won’t it be better to choose a guy? Or if they absolutely needed a girl, why not choose a more athletic girl? Chise is dead clumsy. Or maybe they randomly pick up any girl on the street? Another gaping blank is the utterly illogical and unsatisfactory ending.
I wouldn’t recommend Saikano but if you enjoy nothing but melodramatic, overdone drama, this is the right anime for you.

| Well I knew beforehand that GONZO were bozos and were famous for screwing excellent manga titles.Problem was before I downloaded Saikano anime I didnt know it was produced mainly by GONZO (other studios were involved too) and that I found the 7 manga volumes only after having watched the anime. Because I couldnt figure how this pile of turd could have been so popular and branded one of the most heart-moving and sentimental animes to hit the Far East.
While reading the manga my indignation increased volume by volume. And after reaching the end of volume 7 I felt disgusted to have watched the worst possible manga adaptation of one of the best mangas around. It exceeds in mediocrity and abominableness all of GONZO's adaptations I've seen so far by a large margin.
Here are the main reasons:
1. Animation (and sound). Did they ever think they could make the manga visual style appealing the way they designed the characters? They look absolutely disgusting, as if they were animated 20 years ago. Not that the manga had any detailed design but drawing the characters like that makes them totally unappealing and the viewer doesnt need to have read the manga before to figure it out.As for the intro and ending music I skipped them in every episode. Didnt like it at all that melodramatic tone. The BGM was nothing special
2. Story. They squeezed 7 volumes of which 6 had as an average 220 pages and the seventh around 350 in a 13 episode format. Just the main events are included but in such an uninspiring way and they removed of course the mature manga content. If it was a simpler title like Narutaru I wouldnt mind. There they did adapt 6 volumes in 13 episodes pretty well. But not here. So many messages and so much mature content need more episodes. So a TV series would be extremely difficult to transfer all the manga's messages.
3. Characters. Not only did they remove many elements of the story but they actually included two characters (a boy and a girl) not featured in the manga, thus adding one more couple to the soap opera, making the anime even more tedious. In the first episode already a death occurs in a bombardment of a city (this occurs only in the anime). Also in the manga Japan's invaders spoke some words. Even French! At least the other side was represented and the reader could feel for them. In the anime only a poor English speaking pilot says a few words before been gunned down.Shouji and Chise of the anime have nothing to do with the manga. Here they are of the most horrid anime characters I encountered. The rest of the characters are a little better, but since the two are the main characters, making them so terrible destroys what little chance was left for a tear-jerker at least. Not even that works.
Summary:To those who loved the anime, you might find the manga not to your taste. You'd better watch some light hentais to understand the story better and what they didnt include. As for the ending, well if I say that the result of draining my emotions reached even 1 % of the result of the manga I'd be lying. I felt absolutely nothing at all. The manga's anti-war message is totally heart-wrecking and depressing, but there was also a little bit of hope left. While watching the anime I felt instead they seeked to make profit of this title and take advantage of the mangas popularity and message and produce one of the worst titles available. Normally no anime is expected to be better than a manga, but here the differences are so vast and the messages so much distorted, that I'd recommend the manga over the anime. Ignore this at all costs!

| Saikano was recommended to me by a friend. He loved it, and I had just finished watching Love Hina, so this was a complete 180 degree turn from the humor in Love Hina. Saikano is a serious anime that deals with human nature and the power of love.
Animation: Looking back now, I thought Saikano had OK animation, pretty sketchy at times, but accomodates the story quite well. There's a lot of use of darkness to symbolize the darkness of the theme.
Sound: I didn't find the sounds to be too impressive. Chise, the female protagonist, and Shuji, the male protagonist, have pretty good voice actors that can dish out the emotion, but nothing special other than that.
Story: I liked the way the creators built up the momentum until the very last episode to savor the pure emotion at the end. They use some other never-fail storytelling techniques which enhances the plot, but when stripped down to the bare skin, Saikano is just two people and an overblown obstacle.
Character: Saikano follows the generic anime model for the characters, but the actions between these characers are what earns the anime its money. Betrayal? Revenge? Coercion? yeah - it's all here.
Value: I don't know. There's just something mysteriously good about this anime. When I used the word "good," I mean it in a very wide range of things. All the interactions, the characters, and the obstacles stirred up some kind of strong emotion within me at the end. It's weird.
Enjoyment: Saikano was a little bit too serious for me. I don't like war - no one in the anime likes war either - so it's very depressing to see the conflicts. In the end, when I looked back on the 13 episodes, all I could say was, "Wow, that was screwed up." But that's exactly what the creators wanted me to say about war.
I'd recommend it.

| overall a very good and short series... takes a new twist on the overly used genre of superweapons. The love story itself no matter how twisted, gives life to the story of saikano. Just as good as the name sounds, one of the best love stories available. The last love song on this little planet "Saishuu Heiki Kanojo".

| Even though Saikano was made in 2002, and even though the animation looks colorful, solid, and clear, the characters looked too basic, or simple. Background looked nice, but nothing spectacular, or to wow about.
Opening song is quite good to listen to. There's a great beat to it and the singer has a good voice. Ending song, sang by the same person I think, isn't as great, but ok. The background instruments just didn't fit too great, but the flow of the singer was. There was plenty of music during the anime, but it didn't stand out as having a great effect on my mood.
The story's main focus is the love relationship between Shu-chan and Chise, everything else, the war and the other relationships they had with other people, felt like obvious challenges. Near and about the ending, the story, I think, gets a little better and exciting, with the love relationship and all, but ends up sad. The story didn't seem too impressive: the beginning wasn't attention grapping, thus making me force myself to watch it.
Only a few of the characters were nice. Chise was the character who was a weapon and a human girl, and she struggles to live life with Shu-chan. Shu-chan is the guy who loves Chise only, mostly because the relationship grew on him. He does go through some problems, for example Ms. Fuyumi and Akemi, but in the end, he sticks with Chise. This showed character developement. Characters are likable, and there's a number of them that plays important roles, the characters just didn't feel an above 8.
Saikano was just another nice little love story in the end. This almost makes it into a good collectable item, but not there yet. It's just a basic love story. It didn't really have a great of a depth in character development and story as I thought it would be. Another phrase to sum this series up is "the anime you watch between great ones".

| I recently watched Saikano again, and now can review it, being fresh in my mind.
This is one of the better drama animes out there.
Though the title has the sub-phrase "the Ultimate Weapon", the action and the war around it provide more of a backdrop for the strength of this show: the characters.
In this show, no one is black or white, only shades of gray, and the actions of those follow in that pattern. From dealing with relationships in impossible situations (and the main one does certainly scream 'Impossible', or so I hope), to the effects of being on the losing side of a conflict, the script and the voice people do a great job in 'keeping real' the emotion.
Watch it for the characters. Very recommended.

| I went into watching this anime with fairly high expectations given all the hype surrounding it. I was both satisfied and disappointed.
Throughout the entire series, emotion is the key factor- this show does all it can to be emotional, even at the cost of the storyline and anything else that would have made it a great series.
This show sets a great stage, but it falls flat. The story doesn't even exist really, it's more just broken bits and pieces to amplify the emotional aspect.
To me, it's like someone took a decent plot, and took a hammer to it- all you have left is little shards that don't really fit together any more.
Somehow though, the series is still somewhat enjoyable to watch- I just wish the series didn't feel butchered.
The sound was fine, the animation was ok, although the constant "blush" effect was annoying, it's not hard to get used to.
I said it before, and I'll say again- this show is very emotional, but that's _it_. It's nothing else, no real story, no real plot, nothing but emotional.

| Overly dramatic. The whole thematic of the anime is portrayed with too much in-the-face drama. Less drama would not only make this more digestible but also strengten the dramatic *effect* on the viewer. The thick layers of drama can put you of and make you miss some very strong moments in the anime which made it very worthwhile to watch.
Too strong side-charachters or too weak main-charachters. The sub-plots in comparsion to the main plot are much better executed. This make the main plot look bad, and therefore put people of which do not focus on the side stories. These have the right amount of drama, a well thought out length and place in the series and develop the side characters very well. This is quite astonishing considering that Saikano has only 13 episodes.
Putting this two things together you can see where Saikano can fail. The story drags with a whiny couple which does not really have any character development.
