This is only meant to be seen after seeing the original 52eps of FY. Its a 3 ep which is actually a continuation of the series rather than a standalone OVA, which lacks a lot since you need previous information on all characters to actually enjoy this. One thing which I see is the studio is trying to milk as much money as it can from the series by sticking to the same 4 gods book and with the same old characters.
The only different plot is that a whole new badguy has come in which is even worse than nakago, but was no where to be seen in the series. This is one typical way of prolonging the series and introducing new characters to it, which may upset few FY viewers.
Its a fanservice and with it there is a special omake story after every ending which is clearly the point of the anime itself.
Characters are the same, intro has been changed/shorten in this anime, a new ending, and this will only suit fans of FY and nothing else. Its only those who have previous knowledge can appreciate what is going on.
Its a nice addition to a good series and this ova is the same way as Crest of the stars series and its ova's.

I don't think it's until you read the manga version of Fushigi Yuugi that you come to realise just how lame this first OVA is! This is infact the 4th time I've watched it, but believe it or not, the first time I didn't enjoy it very much!!
Yuu Watase continued the FY story because the fans asked for more and whilst the original 5 volumes of the manga (14-18) that cover the continuation are infact, extremely good, this first part of the anime OVA is NOT written by her, which is plainly obvious in how much it lacks any kind of emotion or for that matter, purpose!

---Note Same review on all FY OVAs---

-OVA1-

Extremely boring as I hardly had an idea of what was going on. The characters are as bland as ever. There is virtually no comedy which was the only redeeming quality of the tv series. The only reason I bothered starting the OVA was for the sake of finishing the series. The story is downright moronic and it is extended needlessly. Oh and Miaka is still annoying as ever.

-OVA2-

The OVA is more or less a continuation which follows the events of the the first OVA. The dastardly villians strike back and another round meaningless "adventure" of the Celestial warriors fighting to save the both worlds. The most horrible of all OVAs. Another rape attempt on Miaka (GAWD!!!!).

-OVA3-

The best of all since Miaka goes in a coma and is pretty much nonexistent. The improvement is massive as the other characters can finally shine in the series. The story is a bit better and has little to do with the last two OVAs. Thus it puts the end to the entire FY saga in a better light. The story can get repetitive with its formulaic plot form which involves battling the "fake gods" as soon as one more Celestial warrior is discovered. Still I have to admit this was more enjoyable than the rest.

--Conclusion on all OVAs--
The OVAs are definitely made for diehard fans of the series. If you didnt enjoy the series that much there is no point in watching this as it is pretty much of the same thing over again with same themes and plot lines from the tv series.

Yay! A three episode long preview. The story seems pretty much messed the whole time. I felt like pointing the screen and uttering: "What, who, where!?" A good lesson for a story-writer not to cram everything possible in three episodes. Otherwise it's like ye' old good TV series again. I was quite tired of Miyaka and Tamahome so I couldn't find any empathy for them anymore. The bad guy seemed like a joke. This incredibly dangerous foe that forces Miyaka and Tamahome again in the world of four gods. And defeating him goes like snapping your fingers compared to Nakago.

"Oh, can they stay together or not? Ah, like I care, maybe they die. Yeah, that would be cool." That pretty much sums up my feelings. As individual series this is a failure but works as a preview for the second OVA. The best part was the fun little cartoon after each episode.

The story is crap! However I gave it a 10 on the enjoyment level, because Tamahome gets reincarnated into a bus boy. Its worth watching if not just for that one scene. And prepared to get majorly confused when this guy name Taka shows up, he's trouble. As a warning watching the OVA will ruin the who majesty that was the TV series. And if you try to watch the TV series again after watching the OVA, it'll leave the taste of disgust in your mouth. Trust me I'm disgusted. The one series that I so treasured as my romantic soap has been tainted. tainted.... :'-(

I'm a fan of Fushigi Yuugi, as I done watching TV series, i wrote a review for it. Same as this one, I write this one after i done with TV & OVA1.

Animation was surely the same, they just make ppl who lived(not spirited) got longer hair, and maybe look a bit more matures. I think(guess) the drawer add some ecchi in this ova so beware you underages ppl :P Since OVA only have 3 ep. they've to compress the story and go fast-pace. Some detail might have been left off, if you don't listen closely. 7 Guadians of Suzaku were reassemble again once more time. But nothing much happend. They come in, they fight and BAM! the defeat the evil guy in 5 min. The ending show that there more OVA coming(I already know that). Don't forget the ending credit, lot of funny stuff happened. Oh I forgot, Miaka stil a crying baby. She even got a freaking time to cry in this short time ep. LOL See you in the next review :)

Firstly, if you haven't watched the 52 episode series, don't bother with this. I watched this without seeing the series first, and it is, as of yet, the most brilliant way I've ever been spoiled for an anime. However, unlike what some reviewers say, this is not to say you will be confused. Because there's no preamble, the initial half of the first episode is confusing, but everything after that is smooth sailing. (Either that or I'm just quicker on the uptake than most people.) Hence, first-time viewers shouldn't be all that confused, but if you don't want to know who's going to die in the TV series, don't watch this one first. Trust me on this.

The first three episodes are just a premise for the story to come. However, there are a couple of fight scenes and a few gratuitous deaths to keep the interest of the viewers. Nothing overly serious, and if a viewer is anything like me, he'll be rolling his eyes and gagging at the overly melodramatic third episode. Anyhow, the story really doesn't begin until the fourth episode.

Too damn short! While the story was good, it defintely needed elaboration. And why would Tenkyoku (the God of Center) want to take over (that's who I'm assuming it is from the similarity of the name)? I thought the gods obeyed their priestesses? And why did he use a Ryu seishuku (Tomo Boushi) when the Center has seven of its own? And then why does the guy use Genbu? Confusing. But still enjoyable. I think this one's ending would've been better suited for the TV series. Definitely watch if you've seen the TV series. Don't watch until you've seen the TV series cuz you'll be even more confused than the people who watched.

After rewatching this OVA a couple times, I'm still not sure what the hell the point of it was. Tomo plays mind games for a bit, roles are reversed, there is this evil guy Tenko that just stands there for a few minutes while Taitsu-kun yells at him, and that's about it. I can kinda see where the story is going but 3 episodes just ain't gonna cut it. This OVA feels ridiculously rushed.

Basically...watch it for the funny hot springs clips at the end of the episodes. They're the only things that make sense.

This OVA wasn't as good as the anime.
It was prettier than the TV series animation wise, but it is lacking in plot.
*NOTE* This portion of the anime wasn't originally included in the manga... it was added to link the original anime to the next OVA

Yep. Definitely an unnecessary followup. Maybe if this was an extension of the series by continuing with things not in the manga, it would've been fine. Is there even a point to the story? It doesn an awful job fitting in with what the TV show presented to us, and somehow, Miaka became more annoying in this, if that's possible. The music is pretty good though, as is the animation, and I love the intro song. This was made for the FY fans, but they are not going to appreciate this.

I was somewhat disapointed when I first watched this. The story had a nice concept but it was too rushed which left me and my friends really confused. I had to watch it several more times to really start to get it. Like I said, nice concept, but was way too rushed. Only watch it if you are a die hard fan. I liked the second OVA much better.
