| Bubblegum Crisis is an action mecha anime released in 1987 consisting of 8 episodes varying in length. Although it falls short in some areas of presentation, Bubblegum Crisis has a number of redeeming attributes.
The graphics and designs in Bubblegum Crisis are standard for an anime of its time. The animation is sufficiently detailed and smooth, and the repeating of scenes is very rare. Provided the viewer isn't too mindful of the dated designs, Bubblegum Crisis is a good anime to look at.
Bubblegum Crisis is a mixed story when it comes to its music and sound. On the one hand, it features excellent theme songs, and all songs are different for every episode. All the songs are translated to a very high quality in the English version, making the English version of Bubblegum Crisis equally excellent to listen to as the original Japanese version. On the other hand, the background music of Bubblegum Crisis suffer from the worst lead-ins and outs I have ever come across. Music playing during a scene will frequently stop without warning, and occasionally a totally different tune will suddenly start. This has the tendency to ruin the mood of a scene, forming a very visible flaw on an otherwise perfect anime in terms of music and sound.
The storyline in each episode of Bubblegum Crisis is pretty much unique, with the occasional event referenced to or character reoccurring to link up the episodes. Since each episode is pretty much unique, Bubblegum Crisis does not restrict itself with a fixed running time for each episode. As a result, the length of each episode can vary between 30 minutes up to an hour. In my opinion, this is excellent, since it gives the episodes sufficient length to fully develop, where no vital questions are left to be answered in a future episode, or answers that refer to questions raised in previous episodes.
In reality, Bubblegum Crisis was abandoned incomplete in 1991 due to a conflict between production companies. However, the sandboxed way in which the episodes are laid out makes this fact unnoticeable, allowing Bubblegum Crisis to stand confidently as a complete anime series, and also allowing later released series such as Bubblegum Crash! to have its own storyline.
For male viewers, the characters in Bubblegum Crisis can be very amusing to watch. The main characters features in the anime have totally different personalities, each attractive in their own way. But, character development is highly uneven, leaving some of the main characters almost undeveloped when the anime concludes. The main cause of this is most likely the abandoning of this anime in 1991, especially since its sequel Bubblegum Crash! focuses more on the characters that were left out in Bubblegum Crisis. Nevertheless, the characters features in Bubblegum Crisis are excellent, especially given the brilliant voice acting both in the original Japanese dialogue and the dubbed English dialogue.
Some viewers claim that Bubblegum Crisis is a 'classic', and I am tempted to agree. However, Bubblegum Crisis has a number of unique features that I have not been able to see in any future released anime series, such as featuring unique theme songs in every episode, and the redubbing of every song in the English version.
One highly interesting fact about Bubblegum Crisis is how accurately it predicts the future. Originally released in 1987 and concluded in 1991, Bubblegum Crisis contains several devices that were not released until many years later. Examples of this include the use of CD-ROM as a dynamic storage medium (on several occasions characters in the anime casually copy data onto CDs), and the common use of portable handheld mobile phones. For those who are less historically aware, both these products were not commercially released until the turn of the millennium.
Overall, Bubblegum Crisis is a very entertaining anime with a few very noticeable strengths and flaws in its presentation. I would recommend this anime to viewers who are looking for something casual and relaxing to watch, and don't mind designs dating back to the late 1980s.

| Xanth DVD rip with Japanese voices (thankfully!) and English subs
After finishing Bubblegum Crisis OVA I felt nostalgic again of the 80's and the animes of that time. It is good to leave all the current post-2000 animes from time to time and turn to the classic animes that we all used to love. Before Ghost in the Shell there was Bubblegum Crisis. I wished I had seen it sooner. Because then I'd have rated it much higher and would have listened to all the songs. But now I skipped the ED songs of every episode (music without animation was boring) and didnt like the OP songs, except that of the first episode. So I cant rate the music that high.
What I did like though were the characters and animation. When I saw the characters they reminded me of Gunsmith Cats (especially Nene with Millie), even without knowing that the mangaka was also involved in BGC. The action scenes were also similar to Gunsmith Cats. I felt like watching Gunsmith Cats in the future. Very good action scenes, it is just that the animation style didnt impress me since I got used to the action of newer animes unfortunately. Here the animation improves in every episode and the last episode had the most colourfull animation since it was made in 1991, while the first episode in 1987. So interconnecting the episodes would be difficult, hence the story is a mess.
From time to time I enjoy watching animes of the genre ''girls with guns'' and BGC is mainly that. Also some sci-fi, cyberpunk elements are thrown in but not in an overcomplicating manner. The backgrounds (mostly night scenes) were very well drawn. Some times the story and the visuals get dark too.
The characters were good. Every episode is devoted to one character. Only Priss and Nene managed to be good while the rest of the Knights were rather decorative. In some episodes some outside characters are even better than the main heroines.
Overall this is a good and solid action title for 80s standards and seen in that context it is worth watching. But if you loath older titles watch it just to see the differences when compared with more recent animes. Sure in technical aspects BGC lags behind but when concerning the characters very few recent animes can even catch up with them. Voice acting is superb for an action/sci-fi title, even surpassing GITS.
I dont know if I'll watch BGC 2040. BGC crisis without the 80's feeling ruins the anime for me. But if I havent anything better to do...

| This wasn't really my type of anime, or even a good one. It does tend to have a very few decent qualities, but it almost never seems to be interesting, or at least too exciting. The characters were very typical and had little or no interesting persona, and the involvement with them was from a less then average story. I thought the music was a little annoying, especially that Hurricane song in the beginning from that band. Usually I have a soft spot for the '80's anime, but I can't give this a good score. The action of it seems to be only thing in my favor. I guess you could see it if you like Sci-Fi, just don't expect a good cast or story from it.

| This is just a great classic anime. Not a masterpiece classic, but a classic. From the go-go 80's, this anime has the charm of good old save the world heros with attitude and personality.
You get this really cool 80's rock/jpop intros/ending, different in each ep often supplied with the rock star and band doubled with scenes what is to come in the ep. It gives you a very fast feel that keeps you looking and wondering what's going to happen. The music is very classic, contrary to animes nowadays where you here themes and songs repeated for particular events: comedy, suspense, action, anger, etc. The music is orchestrated for each ep and is almost all different and new so you feel you're watching something entirely new all the time.
There is something that separates this from animes now in the 1st decade of the 21st century. Anime back in the Boom times are more positive, filled with good hearted and energetic heros. Heros who struggle with the crisis in life but ultimately choose the right choice. You don't have the anti-hero we see a lot of and the evil guys are pretty well defined. You have a very difficult world filled with forces that oppose the good, but the good is very strong and believes in itself. It's not so gray like animes nowadays. It's also not so meloncoly, self-analzying, philosophical and meaning-of-life some animes may be nowadays.
There's also the characters. You know there are your basic characters. 1) The cute, pink haired one, energetic, peppy, high voice, etc. 2) The angry, fighter who doesn't take a lot of crap. Full of pride and cynicism that cold and bitchy. 3) The romantic, capitalistic adventurous type that looks for boys and dates extensively to find true love. 4) The leader type with a lower voice, older woman who knows everything, and is somethign like a mother figure. Each of these characters exist, but they're more raw and unique than the ones we see today. Today '05 they've become so refined that you almost expect and relie on each one of these character showing up in a show, with a seyiu who sports the exact same voice as the last character type you saw in another anime. Of course not all animes fit this criteria, but you see the point i'm making.
In BGC, the voices are more unique and sport a lot more attitude and personality that makes you think these are people who're really talking to each other. It's dialogue is funny and active. You gotta pay attention and there aren't a whole lotta special, mysterious monologues.
The stories are based from ep to ep which can last almost an hour. It's 8 ep that give you a range of impression of the characters over 5 1/2s of anime. The stories aren't necessarily connected like Gunbuster or FLCL or EVA, more like Cowboy Bebop. But in as a whole, they give you a bigger idea o things and gives you overall feel of the characters, which is what really stays with you, because theres no overall story. There's no real ending and the supposed ending Bubblegum Crash! doesn't really stay with what you're givin in BGC.
Overall i felt this anime really gave me some characters and stories that gave me that afterglow feel. I'm done with the series but i still think about it and it's already nostaligic.
Basic deal: Want a "root for the heros" anime filled with sci fi action and intrigue. Want a lot of good interaction and attitude? Like boom time anime's like gunbuster and ranma 1/2 like me? Then you may like BGC
Don't like old animes, happy heros who always win, no deep philosophical or melencoly self reflection on the meaning of life or human society/culture/inevitability? don't like watching anime featuring mature women at least older than 22 and not school girls? it's not for you

| Bubblegum Crisis is the 80s cyberpunk classic that boosted the burgeoning American anime fan community before it was mainstream. And it's a personal favorite of mine. Another instant favorite, in fact.
What's so great about this old time show? Isn't it just an overrated experiment in anime video? Let's get started.
The animation and art still hold up fairly well today. The character designs are very dated (look at the big 80s hair!), but can be forgiven, even if it this IS supposed to take place in the future (expect a comeback of giant 80s hair in the future!). The music is awesome. I love the 80s punk rock feel to many of the songs and it's great that each episode has its own unique opening and closings (besides the episode that doesn't have an opening song).
The characters are endearing, though none of them are as fleshed out as Priss Asagiri, who easily steals the show. Voiced by singer Kinuko Ohmori, Priss exerts the right amount of emotion and depth to make her an unforgetable anime icon. Hell, with those hardsuits, I'd say all four Knight Sabers are icons.
Bubblegum Crisis is not without it's flaws. For one thing, this was obviously an experimental anime, and like most OAVs, lived and died at the whim of popularity. Its popularity tapered off around the 8th episode and the creators had wanted to work on different things, so it was over without a proper conclusion. Also, there's little flow to the underlying storyline and thus it seems very episodic, even when one episode's story continues from an earlier one.
In addition, there simply isn't enough background information. How and when were the Knight Sabers formed? What is Genom's ultimate goal (if any)? Is Sylia completely human or part boomer? What's the connection between Brian J. Mason and Largo? What's the Overmind Control System? Which boomers are legal and which ones are illegal? These are not really answered simply by watching the series and I feel they needed to be touched upon more. It felt more likely that this series was meant as a precursor to a bigger project that never panned out.
Bubblegum Crisis 2040, a series made years later, expands upon many of the ideas in the original and improves on them. But I always prefer the original because it has an atmosphere and feeling that nothing else gives me.
One last note: If you decide to watch this, I'd reccomend you stay away from the English dub. The English VAs were obviously phoning it in. The Japanese seiyuus bring the characters to life.

| So many songs in this series, also there're some music video that came with dvd dics. I'm sure everyone know what kind of story in bubblegum series, it's the same nothing new to expect except this time they have a unconnect ep. and usually they face with differnt monster(boomers) in each ep. Video quality done fair for a 87' anime standard, even then the new(Tokyo 2040 come out in 1998) one don't have differnt in anime either, you can compare them and it was like made in the same year :P
If you gonna watch this please don't skip the concert or any of the MV part since that're the only parts where you'll be enjoy the most.

| -Where's the ending?
-Err, there is none... *smiles uncomfortably*
I kinda liked this anime. It was one of those "enjoy the moment" stuff, mainly because it presented an OK storyline but presented no end to it (yes, yes. I know there's Crash after this but from the reviews I read here then Crash is just that: "Crash!". Or crap).
Oh well. What can you do? Huh?
Things happen.
Shit happens.
But all in all, this is a fun anime from the 80s with fun poser-rock/glamour-rock japanese music (for which I'm a sucker :p) and big KABLOOIEs all over the place.
The funniest part was watching some of the "futuristic" gadgets people had around: telephones that look a lot like the french Minitel with antiesthetic cables all over the place; ultra-sophisticated virtual reality goggles (the ones that guy use to drive his car around) that look like something that baron Mulhausen would wear (who the hell is he again?)... Haha. lol
Who would've thought at that time that TVs would be flat like pancakes (yum) and other oddities like that?
Just don't pick this up hoping to get the best anime experience of your life
Recommended.

| Character design that stays fresh even 15 years later, hardsuit design that nothing has even come close to duplicating, by a long shot. Plot that jumps around a bit, yet retains a theme that any cyber-punk afficionado will appreciate. Throw in an OST (8 actually, one for each ep) to die for, and you've got something that will appeal to all future generations.

| This was "the anime that opened my eyes" but I'll try to be as unbiased as possible.
It was a good anime in its own right. The animation of the suits and boomers were great given its time. The music is awesome, although old. The story is not linked or barely linked and character development was next to nothing, but not all anime NEEDS that to be a good anime. Those are just technicalities.
I'm not going to say it's a "must-see," but I will say that maybe you'll be surprised.

| Before Tokyo 2040 came onto the anime scene, there was plain old BGC 2033. Looking old and battered since it was first released, can it still test the strength of modern times?
In a word, Yes. This anime has what Tokyo has and a little more so, its short and each episode is savoured with lots of action set pieces, good characters and some good parts of general entertainment. The characters is BGC's main selling points for me, Priss and Nene are a joy to watch and relate with, with Linna and Sylia being left out unfortunately. Action-wise, most are satisfactory enough though i wished more was made. There's enough good karma here to keep most anime fans here.
Anyways, this anime suffers from what many old age anime does, its pretty dated animation... however, i didn't take this into consideration and though the animation was superb enough for this type of anime.
The story is the main bad point about this OVA, all episodes are generally 25-50 minute long (they vary from each episode) short stories, most of them desperate enough to give enough character development to one of the 4 main characters. Unfortunatly, no solid overall storyplot spoils this anime, as well as not enough hdevelopment on some characters (Sylia and Nene)
Overall, a decent series, worth watching at least once since it is a cult classic.
7.5/10

| Being a big fan of BGC-2040, it was a real treat to sit down with the original OVA series. I'll try not to turn this into a fanboy rant, but whether or not you consider it's age, BGC was a great OVA series.
The animation is very well done, very fluid and highly detailed considering what they had available to them in the late 80's. The sound kinda depends on if you like 80's rock or not. Being a fan I was in love with the music of the series. The characters have a little different feel to them then 2040, not good or bad but different. Myself having seen 2040 first might have different comments about this then someone who saw the OVA first, then 2040. Regardless, the Knight Sabers are really cool. Unlike the TV series, the OVA consists of mostly single-episode stories so there's not alot of continuatliy between episodes but they're all very entertaining. Full of hot, fast paced action and the like.
1980's anime was awesome. There's something about a series that came from the 80's that we just dont see today. It's always a treat to go back to an old classic and BGC fits like a glove.

| Cyberpunk classic, huh? There must not be that many cyberpunks because this 8 episode OVA wasn't worth my time. It was a dry, boring, and weak anime.
Firstly, I didn't care about any of the characters. In fact, the only names i bothered remembering were Priss and Leon, and both were one-dimensional cardboards. Priss was just another tough-talking, overconfident female. Blah. Leon was nothing but a possible "love interest." I don't even know why I bothered to remmeber his name; he was unimportant. I cared so little about the characters that when certain charactes die, I'm thinking, "So? Who was she anyway?" Needless to say, dramatic scenes didn't work with me.
The reason for the five in story line, which is high for this, is because it was an interesting concept: A story about a group of chicks (Knight Sabers) who have to fight the bad dudes (The Boomers). Decent premise for a good story, but unfortunately, it just wasn't done right. Not only did the girls sometimes come up with cheesy superhero lines, but the Boomers were just as cheesy and uninteresting. More cardboards.
And the plot itself was jumpy. Despite the fact there are only eight episodes, it had fillers. There was an episode about a vampire and that seemed out of place in an anime like this. Imagine dragons in Cowboy Bebop.
All in all, if you like cyberpunks, well this is the one you're supposed to go to. However, I recommend staying away.
Bottom line: Not worth it, but sure as hell buy the soundtrack.

| Yeah, action anime. Not really into it, this one didn't change my mind. The action sequences may have been state of the art back then, but they don't seem to hold up well now. At least I appreciate the humor between the Knight Sabers. But yeah, too many cliched scenes and lines. To be fair, probably many of them started here. One thing that saves this series from being mediocre is the soundtrack. Being a fan of 80s music, this stuff is gold. Hard rockin beats, heavy ballads, and some other stuff in between. Great stuff. So, maybe if they had updated animation with the same sound, we'd have a winner. I can keep on dreamin.

| Well its a title that alot of old anime fan knows about. =)
It didn't look all that back then with low character development and weak storyline and very few eps. (Very low budget stuff as well as the creators has no idea how they wanted to go with the series).
But this title is one of the many early anime title that got the whole Japanese animation thing started so you gotta give them credit for trying. =)

| Animation:
For a series made in the 80s, the animation is pretty darn good. The characters are well drawn and the details of the knight saber suits and boomers are very nice as well.
Sound:
The best part of the series. I still consider this one of the best anime soundtracks I've ever heard. Each OVA has at least 3 original vocal songs in it, and 90% of them are excellent.
Story:
This is where a lot people found flaws in BGC. The common consensus is that the story didn't flow. But guess what, they weren't supposed to. Other than the first 3 OVAs where the story is connected, the other 5 OVAs were released as stand alone episodes with their own individual storylines. Nonetheless, the concept and premise of the series is still excellent and it definitely won't bore you.
Characters:
The cast is excellent. It's unfortunate that they couldn't keep the same character designs in the TV series. Character development is bit lacking due to the short series, but there is enough depth in them as to make you care about them.
Conclusion:
If you can overlook some of the technical flaws and watch it without comparing it to today's standards, BGC is a wonderful series. If you are into action and mecha series, definitely give this classic series a try.

| This series had been so talked up before I'd ever managed to see an episode that I was left feeling disappointed when I finally did.... Of course, that was episode 2, it was half an hour long, and about the least appealing of all of BGC's original episodes.
At the start, BGC struggles. It has all the pieces together that 2040 mined, but the animation is average (pointing to a low budget) and the direction seems random. The first and third episodes are not too bad, but the second looks more like a lead-in to episode seven, and episode four is a complete filler. Only episodes five to eight really work well with the format, mostly because it seems that the producers finally know what they want from the series.
And then it suddenly comes to a dead end. Disappointing though it may be, that's the way things happened behind the scenes, and no release of BGCrash and AD Police was ever going to make up for that. 2040 looks better and is more up to date, but BGC purists still look upon this as the best BGC had to offer.

| this series is a classic, and has it all...i really couldn't bring myself to give it less than 10 on anything.
now people, just because this series was made in the 80's doesn't mean that the animation is "old" and "outdated". please review it on how good it was for it's time.
for an 80's anime the animation is perfect. you couldn't find much better than this at that time. it kept getting better too, which is a bonus. the first episode (though amazing) doesn't look as good as scoop chase (the last episode). but overall it really is amazing.
the music, ah the music...it is so good. totally 80's...and amazing. there are SO many songs, all of which are great.
every episode is well written and different. the series doesn't drag, nor are there bad filler episodes. they are all unique and special. i have a big thing for the last episode since it focuses on nene who is my favorite knight saber.
i don't really see there being anything to dislike about BBC. it is amazing, and should be viewed by all serious otaku at some point.

| This was the first anime I ever watched. I LOVED IT... back then. It's thanks to Bubblegum Crisis that I went on to enjoy many other animes and even take Japanese in High School and College. Unfortunately watching it for the second time recently, many years later, it was a bit boring. The action scenes are still very good though, so if action is your genre, don't overlook Bubblegum Crisis.
There is also plenty of decent story telling in the series, though it suffers from a balance of plots that are often either too predictable or so farfetched that they're unbelievable. Nevertheless, the stories are emotional and effective.
I suppose my standards have changed since I first watched... Still, this is certainly a decent anime. The 80s music will definately make you nostalgic. ;)
Whether or not you enjoy this, you should probably check out Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 as well, as it is a better series overall.
