Kudos to Mr Makoto Shinkai who singlehandedly produced such a great OVA.

The story of Hoshi no Koe revolves around young lovers Noboru and Mikako in a prospective setting whereby technology has advanced to the extent that space is accessible and human professionals are needed in space to fend off aliens that may endanger the Earth.Sadly,Mikako is recruited and she cannot refuse her role, which means the two have to be apart.

Hoshi no Koe is a sentimental narrative about love separation and it display characters at their most helpless and dreadful moments. The story devotes most of the time on the aftermath of the pair's separation and expressing the overwhelming emotions the two have towards each other as time passes.I find this harsh reality of their long distance relationship and their incapability to salvage anything to be the essence of the story. The events progess periodically according to time intervals, usually from Mikako's perspective.Hoshi no Koe,though only 30 minutes,is fast-paced,straight to the point and well-conveyed.Some criticised it for being too rushed but considering the time constraints,it was presented beautifully so much so it shames other longer series which had ample time and failed to accomplish what Hoshi no Koe had.It is however the same fact that Hoshi no Koe is just too short to build up a solid story with strong characters,no matter how well it presents. There are a few questionable parts in the story which viewers should just let it be.I felt that the ending leaves imagination to wander, depending on how one interprets Hoshi no Koe.

The gorgeous background scenery featured in Hoshi no Koe is the only highlight of its animation. The character design is below average and the sakura petals backfires for trying to set the ambiance because it failed to fit in the mesmerizing scenery.I have mixed feeling for the mecha actions(decent looking). It was added in to follow up the story so the story would make sense,Mikako's really on a mission. But the time spent on this could have been used to elaborate more on the hardship Noboru and Mikako are going through after the two are separated. Then again, the mecha actions also portrays Mikako's struggle and desperation impressively.I don't know but in the end,it still goes down to the time limitations...damn.

The character development is scarce since Hoshi no Koe is so short and there are not much history or anything about the characters either. But you can definitely tell both Mikako and Noboru share great chemistry.Their actions were believable too and at times even surpassed what I had expected of them or what anyone would have done. This highly enhances the realism of their relationship even in a sci-fi setting and brings me closer to them. However the reason that I never stopped rooting for Noboru and Mikako to be together is not because of their actions but because of how much their story(which is the plot) had impacted me.

Hoshi no Koe also means The Voices Of a Distant Stars and this title actually embody Mikako's situation in space.A title that is meaningful is always worthy a mention.

Voice acting is fine but lifeless. The music themes included befits the somber atmosphere but it was not memorable and I personally felt many other musics could fill in the role. The inserted song has some dreary lyrics, pretty melancholic if you asked me though it doesn't sound that like it.Annoying robots' noises too...

When watching certain shows,it is important to get the mood right by watching at a appropriate time and in a suitable environment.Watching horror stuffs when the sun is shining upon you just defeats the purpose of watching one.The same applies to dramatic shows which you just want to enjoy it with your tissue box in solitude. For Hoshi no Koe,one should watch it alone in the evening or at night for best result.

Hoshi no Koe is almost like one of those tragic-love poem brought to life.
Short, withering and somehow unbearable. It starts and ends like a rainbow. If you relish or enjoy such poems then you must watch this.

It also contains some very powerful dialogues which I will remember for long.An excellent example is the message Mikako sent to Noboru that needs to travel 9 years before it reaches Noboru. This is the message you probably would expect Mikako to write down all her bottled feelings in space and how much she yearns to be together with Noboru. But she didn't and I can't say more. The simplicity of the message she sent left me flabbergasted. Her noble intentions concealed behind this message made my heart ache many time,it reflects her personality very well.It was simply the best moment of the entire show.

Hoshi no Koe should have been made a movie, instead of a 30minutes OVA that was mostly only being appreciated because it is a one-man-work and being incredibly short.I felt it was a waste since the purity of the story was being overshadowed and given its intriguing start along with the outline of a heartbreaking story,Hoshi no Koe will certainly achieve so much more with a movie length. It has the roots to become an outstanding drama but the insufficient time killed its growth. If only there were proper support behind Mr Makoto to educe this bittersweet poem.

Hoshi no Koe is arguably the best standalone sci-fi (mecha) OVA released.

This one-episode (30-minute) OVA is short and sweet. While many viewers might be skeptical like I was about the quality in such a short segment, Hoshi no Koe does not disappoint. Unlike many mecha-based animes that contain only a romance subplot, Hoshi no Koe incorperates a nice balance between the futuristic mecha genre and the sweet romance genre.

What is impressive about this anime is the impression it leaves. The plot is very compelling and from my experience has stirred the emotions of many who have viewed this anime. While this is a mecha/romance OVA, the anime is well-suited for almost any anime viewer who loves a good plot.

Unlike most short OVAs, Hoshi no Koe leaves quite the impression in a short amount of time. It is also because the OVA is so short and sweet that most viewers should expect to view the anime multiple times because not only is it time-efficient, but also because it is heartwrenching and amazing.

This anime is a very safe pick for any anime viewer. I doubt many will regret viewing this anime, and even if Hoshi no Koe is not exactly right for you it is quite time efficient.

Hoshi no Koe is a short twenty-five minutes long OVA about love separated by space.

Hoshi no Koe is decent, pretty good actually. Considering it was done by a single person and with very low budget, one can only wonder where did the magnificent scenery animation came from. Anyway, even though it achieves much more than an usual extremely short ova, I would not call it a masterpiece. It has an idea, it carries it out, albeit rushed, but it's interesting. However, I doubt this OVA will linger in my head for a very long time, as even though it is beautiful, Hoshi no Koe is a simple love story with very little character development in the core.

If you want a beautiful, emotionally moving quick-watch, check Hoshi no Koe out, maybe you will find it great, maybe you will not, but you wont call it bad nonetheless. However, if you are searching for a deep philosophical quick-watch, then Pale Cocoon or Kigeki would be far better choices.

I can find only one flaw in this anime. The flaw is that this is a one episode OVA and not a 26 episode series.

Now that I've watched Gunbuster, its obvious to me that Makoto Shinkai took a lot of hints from that, but what he brings new to the formula adds a new kind of depth to the drama. The relationship between the heroine and her boyfriend back on earth is very well played and both are likable characters, especially for a one ep OVA. But , the better this anime is, the more painful it is to watch as we know it will never be made into a series.

Still, as Makoto Shinkai's works go, I consider it the second best, almost entirely because of its shortness. I remember what my friend told me before loaning me a version he had taken off the internet (before any of Shinkai's works came out over here). He said that it was a beautiful anime, but it felt more like a long preview than a full story, and that is the pain of it. In fact, I can't even stand to watch it unless I'm prepared to spend the next several hours dreaming of what the anime could have been.

Still, It's definitely more than worth your time. If you ever have the chance to watch it then absolutely do. You'll regret it for all the right reasons.

This anime is another master piece by shinkai makoto, which never fails me.

First is the animation, its so far the best i had seen out of so many anime. Sometimes i cannot even tell whether its shot using HD camera in real life or just drawn using computer graphics. From others' reviews i have discovered that they have bad comment about how the characters' face is drawn, but i totally disagree with them. Simplicity is good. 10 is not too much, its fair.

Next is the sound. Though lacking in op and end theme, it truely utilised the BGM to stir the audience's feeling and bring out the atmosphere. A distinctive characteristic of a good anime. The sound actress was also able to bring out the sadness in them. A 9 is justified.

The best part of shinkai's work is the story. Unlike other animes, it has depth, a truely edifying anime that will change one's view of life and his environment. Words are simply not enough to describe, go get his DVD and u will know.

There was not many characters in this anime, but each characters's feelings and view were carefully designed. Extras like classmates also play a part in expressing other people's view on the things happening.

There were certainly great value in not only this anime, but every one of shinkai's work. I totally enjoy this anime and i hope my kids will get to watch it too.

Only one sentence to describe enjoyment. "I enjoyed it to the last second just like i enjoy the last drop of cola, and i want MORE."

Animation: anime had a really great scenes, but the character's faces and figures were drawn very bad. As if the creator was more concerned about the background and the characters were placed just to give a sense to the plot.
Sound: sound was good. Nice characters' voices, good effects, but some more powerful sound effects, such as explosions were missing.
Story: the director likes a bit orthadox stories, but unlike his other works, I did not like this story. Somewhat too much unbelieveble events and opponents seemed to very weak her controlled machinery even if it was an enormous armanda ship.
Character: characters were depicted in the realistic manner, unfortunetally in the begining of the story they did not seem to be as close related as they were depicted in the latter events. Also as it was mentioned earlier the design of the characters' is poor.
Value: I would not like to owe this anime moreover, to watch it again.
Enjoyment: I would not recommend this anime to others very highly . There are better works of this producer that deserve more attention such as "5 cm: chain of short stories." I believe this anime deserved 7 at the most.

Hoshi No Koe(Voices of a Distant Star)
-1 episode(25 minutes)
-was done by just one man(I didn't do any research, this is based on other reviews)
-Top 55 currently

I was skeptical towards this OVA in the beginning. So I decide to watch it.For god sake this is just 25 minutes,of course I am going to lay my hands on it.

To me,this is a super OVA.For once or twice had this anime got my sympathy for those characters.Ignoring whatsoever the plot is,we viewers are presented with a sad story(yea...it is)to enjoy the anime.Very harsh for the male lead since the female lead had to perish. The storyline is quite touchy too. However, that is about the best it can bring out.

About the animation, the background is the only thing worth praising.Characters don't look good and I just felt that it was very unreal.

I was expecting the female lead to die in the battle then drip a few tears and finishing it off with a deep and sorrowful line(I got the second prize though). That is why this OVA is called Voices of a Distant Star. However,I don't really find myself enjoying this OVA.But it is really no easy task to create something as short as that and still maintaining the enjoyment.

Don't demand so much from it,this is just a 25 minutes anime.Be happy that it isn't one of those crappy OVAs too.
For recommendation...Just watch it...
We have 365 days a year with 24 hours of time in each day.Surely, you will find space in your schedule for it.

Edit:Yea,I found another 25 minutes to rewatch Hoshi No Koe.Even better than the first watch I would say,but it is too short.I loving it even more.Great title too.
Edit 2:dam i really love this show...

will rewrite again...

Hoshi no Koe (The Voices of a Distant Star) is a really decent 30-minute single episode anime which in that short span of time shows pure childhood love and the emotions of separation. While heartwrenching for those romance fans out there, it is also a nice sub-plot of science-fiction.

Note from viewer: I see this as more than an anime. I see it as a message and a analogy to real life. I compare this anime to those to lose and try to forget but can't their middle school or high school love after they've parted ways and went to different schools.

Unfortunately, I only recently was introduced to Shinkai with Beyond the Clouds, and that somewhat inflated my overall expectations for Hoshi no Koe. I was hoping for something a bit more poignant and dramatic, but regardless I felt it a rather satisfying experience.

Being that Beyond the Clouds had absolutely amazing animation in every regard, I was also hoping to see that here. Aside from somewhat awkward character designs (mainly in the faces), this fortunately held quite true. Incredibly fluid framerates along with gorgeous scenery fill this short OVA to the brim. Though CG mecha have never been too much a fancy of mine, they didn't detract from the overall atmosphere here and are thus acceptable. Not as breathtaking as my expecations, but by far very superb scores for the animation category.

Though the musical track isn't all that impressive on its own, it pretty much fades ambiently into the background for a substantial portion of the OVA. As it's a fine supplement to the Hoshi no Koe's overall mood and environment, I have little complaint. Beautiful music to go with beautiful scenery. Also, being that the entire OVA is pretty much two prolonged monologues, the Seiyuu does a stupendous job at bringing the story alive.

As one might expect, for twenty-five minutes the limitations put on a potential story are great. Hoshi no Koe proves, however, that length does not equate mediocracy, as we're offered a very intriguing and interesting story in less than half an hour. Unfortunately, I felt Hoshi no Koe to be a bit too upbeat for its own good; the attempted poignancy of the separation never really touched me. One line in particular, however, was exceptionally powerful: "Greetings to a 24 year old Noboru from a 15 year old Nagamine!" Though not as emotional a message as I thought it would be, the story carries a fairly strong gravity of its own. An interesting topic makes it all the better. It's pretty amazing that a twenty-five minute OVA can present an idea clearly and effectively better than some full length anime series can.

Not much to say about the characters, though. In many ways, actually, they seem to be mere aspects of the plot rather than human beings. Despite how negative this sounds, it's actually beneficial, as Hoshi no Koe is simply too small a time span to try to develop the characters much less a romance. Most importantly, they do their job at conveying the intended message, though I did feel a bit more emphasis on Noboru's side would have been appropriate in leiu of the 'action' scenes.

All in all, however, a real gem almost entirely because of its length. Hoshi no Koe is short, sweet, and to the point. Definitely a top notch production that all should watch, if not merely because it's but the length of a normal anime episode. Props to Shinkai on another great piece of work.

Recommended.

As with Kumo no Muko, there's always something i find adorable in makoto shinkai's work. Nostalgia is somewhat of a soft spot for me, and it seems to be the only thing he deals with.

Hoshi no Koe is a lot like Kumo no Muko in concept. The main theme is some strange mix of nostalgia and love. While that is very clearly conveyed in HnK, its premise and story may have been a little too big for the time it was allowed. HnK is seriously a huge slab of narration. You don't really get a break at all, and the development of the sci-fi universe takes up a lot of the time. As with Kumo no Muko, i find myself no really caring much about the swarm of backdrop information that's being fed to me, and really only focusing on the endearing characters themselves.

It's quite amazing how the main character could make such a deep impression on me in just 20 some minutes. Sadly, HnK does seem a little cluttered and a little too packed.

The animation is not anything too dazzling, and some of the characters look quite rough, but a lot of the action is quite impressive.

Overall, Kumo no Muko delivers the same type of experience, but while still cluttered with more backdrop development than necessary, there isn't quite as much narration, allowing you to enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere at a nicer, slower pace.

"Interesting and sort of short" are how I'd probably first describe Hoshi no Koe, but after a moment, I'd add, "but very poetic."

This is a one episode anime, and therefore not a movie, which it should have been, at least.

This short length is one primary problem with Hoshi no Koe. The second, and more pressing, is that things occur that indicate a false direction. This sort of pretends to be Contact, while actually being more like Stellvia.

The strength in this anime lies in its poetic beauty. It is practically a poem, with some interruptions for silly action here and there.

It's worth watching, I suppose.

this anime is only about 25 minutes long, aproximately the standard length of 1 normal episode of a serise. somehow in that short 25 minutes, the story progresses well and gives the viewer things to think about.

ANIMATION: I thought the animation was great except for the character design, which i wasnt really all that fond of. also there were some problems with consistancy in how the characters faces were animated. There are a few mech-style dogfights that were pretty good and the backgrounds were good too, the envyroments were all nicely drawn as well but there seemed to be something missing.. oh well

SOUND: no theme song or ending theme, well there was a song near the end of the show but... well whatever. I thought all the sound effects were good, like the explotions and gunfire and such but there wasnt really any time to develope musical themes in 25min so... well there were none basically just sfx and background music

STORY: The basic point of the story is that long distance phone calls are expensive... ok not really. a girl and a guy that grew up together were about to go into highschool when the girl was selected to join the space program and was thus sent away into the far reaches of space. however the two tried to stay in toutch through text messages.. the only thing is that the further you get from earth the longer it taks for you to text earth so yeah, as the girl got further and further away it took longer and longer for the guy to get the texts. and eventually the last on took 8.7 years.... anyway its basically a long distance relationship story

CHARACTER: whoever wrote this story actually did a pretty good job of character developement for the time alloted to work with. the character developement and well most of the rest of the story was done in monologues/asides that mannaged to convey the characters fealings very well. but since its a ldr story you can pretty much guess what the characters are going to be like.

VALUE: Id watch it again sometime... just cause of how short it is. I watched it on fansub (i think ??) and the subs were pretty good. except that they had one typo. i dont know who subbed it tho, but just so you know its out there to be found if fansubbing is how you roll.

ENJOYMENT: well i thought it was interesting and it gave me some new things to think about. so ill say that i liked it and that it is worth watching if you have 25 minutes to spare

Ignoring the horribly out-of-date animation and poor character designs, Hoshi no Koe was a joy to watch if only to provoke emotions and thoughts on space travel and the future. I'm a first-time Shinkai Makoto-er, but the directing work on this OVA is brilliant beyond words - don't say it isn't because I'd like to see you try. The themes evoked are beautifully presented through only two love-crossed characters and the distance between them. Plus, the science-fiction-esque portion sold me, so it's all good - I can't wait to get my hands on more of this type of anime.

Unfortunately, I won't be viewing this again - horrible animation and a contraption of a story that's written just so the theme can be played out. I can only stand very few alien media (Independance Day, Men In Black; lol American movies, lol Will Smith), so this can be added to a pile beside Uchuu no Stellvia; if you liked Stellvia, watch this. In fact, everyone should watch this, then decide if they want to see it again. ^^

I was quite impressed with this anime because it is only 24 minutes long in its entirety, but it still manages to be entertaining and highly worthwhile. While the show can not develop a highly complex plot or really flesh out its characters in half an hour, it takes a very specific situation and displays it beautifully. The premise for the show is that of two friends/lovers separated by a great distance, and the whole show is about them coming to terms with this separation. While that may sound like a simple idea, the anime shows all the complexities and emotions involved, and makes the viewer sympathize with the characters. If you want a short but poignant piece of art, this anime will deliver.

This show is infact 30mins meaning you're not going to get what's in a 24 ep show. I personally dislike alot of OVAs but this one was one of the few that i truely enjoyed despite it's length. Reading through some of the reviews you can tell there isn't alot of development. The story about the aliens might as well never have been there and the characters are not as well animated as some current shows. However, none of that is really what the show is trying to focus on. Those who want some action based mecha anime might as well not bother to pick it up.

It's pretty much a love it or hate it show either way it's only 30mins so it's not like you've got much to lose.

this anime is like magic. it's so short but 10mins of it is already enough to move my heart. everything about it is so beautiful and sad. the fact it doesnt have much plot development or dialog doesnt matter at all, its music is simply soultouching. this is incomparably beautiful and consummate.the 25mins i spent on this is like walking through a corridor deepest in human's soul. seeing the sadness, hearing the unwavering voice, feeling the infinite distance, touching tomorrow's hope. i worship those two who love each other so much. their love is divine. this is the pinacle for humanity. love transcends time, distance, loneliness, darkness, death...I’ve seen animes that made me cry, but this one touches me beyond my tears. This one went somewhere in my heart where no other anime could go.

Hoshi no Koe is like a piece of artwork which the artist scrambled together when he suddenly had an idea. However, the idea lacked in-depth thoughts and refinements. That piece is just like a draft representation of what he had suddenly thought about.
That was the impression I get from Hoshi no Koe. As an OVA which is only 1 25 mins episode, one can't really expect much from it. It is just a short tale about what space travelling can do to would be lovers. The seemingly 'deeper' plot of the space aliens is just a garnish. In the end, this is really forgettable. The worst thing is, I just finished PlanetES right before I watched this which is truly a better space sci-fi anime(with better drama too).
I wouldn't really recommend this to anyone. It is really just quite a waste of time.

Okay.... Hoshi no Koe is a good anime, But i think there are Quite a few major flaws in it...

Animation, The Mechas are somewhat cool, but not the best, the sceneries were beautiful. But the characters were SO UGLY?! They seriously could have had better character design...

The sounds were all right, nothing spectacular, nothing bad. The Seiyuus were Okay... So a 7 should be all right.

Story, Personally, I think the Story is far-fetched & That could possibly Never Happen, but then again, the storyline is okay-to-understand and i quite liked this storyline cause i find it this storyline original and amazing, to be seperated by space and time.

Characters, Well, first of all, they are very badly drawn, & deserve better faces. & There weren't really a lot of character development, I think this anime's major flaws are its Ugly Character Designs & Its Length of time.

Seriously, I think this anime was beautiful & Touching, it has potential to grow into something more spectacular, But Why is it Only 25 minutes??? It Would Definitely be a memorable Movie if it was longer. If this movie lasted longer, There would definitely be more character development, & there would be more time for us to understand the sadness of the 2 main characters.

Despite those flaws, I still found it touching and beautiful. Maybe it's because I was imagining if that happened to me. & I was seperated from my Love by Space & Time. & in the end, I Die without Ever Meeting him How Many Years ago... Without even Saying Good Bye.

Now I Seriously feel like crying... ='(

Well, It is a memorable anime, but it would be even more Spectacular if there were given More Time & More Character Development & Understanding of the Characters.

I was also wondering. How come the Girl didn't grow up even when she was in space??? cause they DID Waited for one year and 8 years to send the mail, so Shouldn't she have been like 20 + years old by then??? I found this confusing...

But this anime Deserves a watch anyway. There will be people who Love it, & People who Disliked it, & more People like me who thought it was touching but think this anime deserved more time...

For an OAV I heard was so deep and beautiful, I sure was hoping for more than a girl and a boy sending each other messages from outer space one to the other. Of course, since it takes the guy 7 years to get any of her messages, their relationship gets weaker over time, to the point where the guy is, like, in his late 30s and the girl is still a teenager. Figured he would have gotten married and had children with some other girl not 7 light-years away from him, don't you think?

I admire that this is strictly a one-man show, and that just pains me all the more to criticize this. The story is boring and overdone, the CG looks cheap (even for bad anime CG), the voice acting isn't particularly good, and the pace is slower than a typical saga in Dragonball Z. It doesn't even animate all too much; sure, everything looks nice in stills and screenshots, but everything animates like some low-budget Studio Pierrot work. Shinkai Makoto could have easily told this story in 10 or 15 minutes; at 25 minutes it's simply too "long" for a short OAV. I could've watched an episode of Cardcaptor Sakura at that time, which is several times more interesting than this.
