This production has become an emo-fied gatekeepers, and is on a completely different level as compared to GK. I am not complaining, it seemed strange and unusual at first (especially if you've watched the one before this) but then unfolds into something with an apparent message that attempts to strike the viewers. It seems to depict the end of the world, in an extreme case, as a result of the greed and selfishness of mankind. The invaders are everywhere, and any human that is consumed by "modern" thoughts eventually becomes one. One of the most frightening (yes frightening) scenes was how Miu's friends became invaders as well. There are issues and motives of GK21, and it's presented in a dark and exaggerated manner. There is almost no laughter and happiness in this OVA unlike it's former. However, the plot is deep, yet shallow; intended message is thought inducing, character development REALLY poor.

Too many questions that were left unanswered. For someone who hasn't played the game that linked gatekeepers to gatekeepers 21, it was fairly confusing.

However, after doing a brief readup on the game and its storyline, GK21 seemed to be reasonably more comprehensible. As described by other reviewers, there was not an explanation of the fate of many of the characters from GK. The appearance of a certain character (from TV series, related to the main one) did not help much in explaining what really happened and it is considered as just a weak attempt to "link both animes together". Questions like [SPOILER] why is kageyama helping the GK now? Why is he still alive? Wasn't he defeated by Shun in GK? The only thing I found out was that he was saved by Megumi during the show down and so he didn't die. This was not included in GK21.

Big question was, WHO'S Ayane's MOTHER? Ruriko?! Apparently, according to the game shun did not end up with Ruriko. So who's the mother and what happened to both of them?

Not much is known about the main character, and she hardly develops into anything more. Miu did show some changes...her character was too weak for my liking, but thats probably just me. Thinking back 6 episodes was really difficult to elaborate much and most of the developments were compressed into the last few episodes.

Despite this, I found myself enjoying it. The length was acceptable (for me) for a "remake" version of GK since it was getting a bit too dark and depressing at some point. Perhaps a bit more males would have also helped in balancing out the "picture". Too many girls made this a little "off" for me.

Overall, pretty decent anime. Watch it without having too much hopes of getting the usual GK "vibe".

Very poor character development. People will often say there is good character developmnent when they don't know what the heck to look for. For anyone that thought this anime had good character development, let me fill you in...

Firstly Ayane Isuzu's relationship with her parent's and relatives is not clearly explained. Secondly, character development is where you learn new things about a character, or where you see progression from one stage to another... i.e. weak heroine becoming strong or inverse. Miu's character was totally pathetic and weak. There was no progression of her character other than her crying in every episde.

As for the other characters, Reiji who makes a return from the original series has now become "good" with no explanation of why or how he even survived. The chick with the gate of knives was materialistic and should have been perfect material to become an invader... though as fobbed off by one line "gatekeepers cant be invaders"... yeah nice.

The animation was very nice, when something was actually moving. Most of the animation was "cheap" and involved many scrolling scenery shots, static head with moving mouth scenes, and scrolling lines with static hero. You'll know what i mean.

Sound wise, the effects were upto scratch, I didn't get the feeling of hearing recycled sounds from the original.

As for the story, ok, quite good but the only let down was the character development. One of the other irritating points of this anime was the voice of Miu. Extremely irritating, worse than Shinji. I really hate weak characters, and based on the first Gatekeepers, I thought this was going to be a team of elite gatekeeprs kicking ass... instead it was a bunch of emo girls crying.

If you like that kind of thing then this anime is for you. If you like strong characters with strong morals and ethics, good story line with good progression... this anime is definitely not for you... unless you can afford to buy another tv after you smash your current one up from frustration.

I was quite surprised by this OVA. It is quite different from the TV series, being shorter and with much less action... but it more than makes up with depth of story and character.

The anime centers around Ayane, girl with a grudge against the world. The story is dark compared to that of the TV series, but is well executed. Character development of Ayane is excellent. This is a good OVA in the sense that it puts focus on one key character and one main plot line - as opposed to other anime that try to cover too much in too few episodes and end up with poor development or worse, ends left hanging.

Opposed to the bustling society in the boom years (1969 in the tv series), this OVA is set in 2001 - a bitter, insensitive society filled with hate and angst. That's modern society for you. Themes related to relationships and living under such conditions are explored in this anime.

I can't say I liked the opening and endtitle sequences. Rather plain, for an OVA. Cool deja vu: endtitles with numbered cuts, just like the tv series.

From promo material I'd already expected to see Yukino and Reiji from the original series. But there was one more old character appearance that truly surprised me... no spoilers on that though.

People who have not seen the TV series may not really grasp the business about invaders and gates because there is no detailed elaboration on these.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, and would recommend it especially to those who have seen the TV series, and would like to see a deeper story built on the same premise.

This series is absolutely great. After being pretty bored watching the first "Gatekeepers" series, I was in for a nice surprise when I saw this one...because everything was almost perfect. This series is ALOT better than the prequel. The animation is alot better, it's alot more exciting, and I don't know...I can't find much, if any flaws to it at all...although there's one question that still bugs me, in that what DID happen to Shun and Ruriko??? But still, you should watch the first "Gatekeepers" before watching this series to understand some of the things that goes on...and, Reiji is awesome in this one.

This OVA is awesome. If you don't pay attention to the hints in the story you won't understand why she uses cellphones instead of her true gate power. Bascially she has issues with her father and mentions it in the first episode, which is why she developed using cellphones to open up various other gates. I guess if you have seen The original gatekeepers series then you may know more about it. But overall its a great anime, the action is intense. The subplot is one of those deeper meanings that you can relate to especially if you live in a city like NYC.

Gatekeepers 21 is a good series, not a great series, but a good one. Its about Ayane, the daughter of the original Gatekeepers pair and Miu, the leap gatekeeper and their relationship between them and their fight against the evil forces of a Gatekeeper. What I like about the story is about Ayane. She is a very depressing character, but manages to handle her depression and make a good friend in the person of Miu and finally understands the meaning of life and fun. Animation is good, and I just love the intro song, and the outro is not bad either. The story could have improve a little bit more and the ending was a little pathetic in terms of the fight against the last enemy. The only thing that save this series is the characters. I like every one of them, even the annoying Miu, and the music and soundtrack is good and heart warming. There are still some holes in the story but guess cause of the length of the OVA, it was like that. If you liked gatekeepers, the original series, give it a chance for this one. GK21 could dissapoint or satisfy you. Personally I dont feel bored to watch it a couple of times so for Me, it is a good series after all.

Gatekeepers 21 was a VERY dissapointing title. The story was non-sensical and the characters were VERY boring. How do you fight using cell phones, COME ON. This was also short, but its an OVA so that is not suprising. If you want to know more of why I rated this OVA so lowly read on.

I enjoyed this one much more than the original. It is much more serious and less kiddish. The characters are interesting and this anime reveals interesting things about the gates that were not revealed in the first series. If you are expected a lighthearted kiddish theme like the first series though, you will be disappointed. This series is much more serious than the original.

i loved the original gk for it makes me feel good. it had the usual childhood friend turned sweetheart love story that most girls dream of. or at least most girls love. but i also liked this anime so much, in the concept that it has superb animation, great storyline and all. but i'm the type of fan who LOVES the characters of an anime to the point that i want them to have good futures/fates. i had high hopes for shun and rurippe. with their kawaii scenes and all. because of the heavy feel of this ova, all through-out, my sister and i were recalling funny scenes in the orig series. when ukiya flashed his world badge to an officer that cried in happiness, the way ruriko's and shun's windows are located directly at each other, how ruriko sees ukiya in states of undress (1st with boxers on, then his naked butt... kawaii!). i liked this ova in the technical stuffs, but i'm disappointed on the way the original characters turned out. definitely give us more!

A nice anime, the only thing i dont like about it is that they completely erased all the "first generation" gate keepers. The gap is way to big and there wasnt enough information given about the past characters. The only thing i know is that Shun died somehow i duno why, i have no idea what happened to Ruli , and all the past gate keepers are somehow gone except Yukino.

As most anime lack in eather one way or more. this anime seems to know what Good quality animations with sound and some kick ass dark story can do.

Animation:
not happening muh but this anime is really good looking. with some amazing specail effects. and wonderful use of shadows. not to forget with amazing smooth going animations. and ofcourse most of the Cast is female.

Sound:
with an overaverage Seiyuu. and amzing dolby use. some amazing sound effects. and some memoriable songs. theres bearly any minor in this anime.

Story:
with a very dark story. its nothing like the Tv serie its based on... my taste a 100X better. ofcourse the story has some minor point. and some explaining hasn't been fully done, yet nothing that can irritate you. for my liking the end was rushed. not bad i dont like those DBZ endboss fightings anyway.

Character:
with only 6 eps they've done quite a good job packing the characters with backgrounds and presonalitys. well done.
i've seen better .. yet i have seen much worse

Value:
with 6 eps its a bit short. i wished it was longer. but as i have learned from all animes wich are beeing rushed or strechted out. they fail .. badly.

Enjoyment:
Sound is perhaps even more important then the animations itself. this one sure knows how to make full use of this.
a wonderful anime.

This is a dark and twisted sequel to the original Gatekeepers, with a completely different atmosphere. The optimism of Japan's economic boom has evaporated, in its stead the selfishness and misanthropy of the modern deflationary era. GK21 is much closer to horror than its predecessor, and the story much more serious.

Ayane is the protagonist, mirrored in spirit by Yuurei Shoujo. Ayane works for Reiji, fighting the Invaders who now burst out of humans rather than merely replace them. The animation is superb, and the characterisation is demonstrated when Ayane incisively but cruelly denigrates Miu about her hesitant personality. Satoka is superfluous at times, but it's a social comment that she fights the Invaders for the money.

The plot goes at its own pace and fills up the 6 episodes well, though suffers from the gap between the original series. I've heard that a novel describes what happens to Shun, Reiji, Megumi and Ayane's mother, and this hole here is quite annoying, especially with the change of tone. Some questions are answered, but with responses suited to the dark, futile atmosphere of GK21 and not at all to the original.

The final showdown is a little unsatisfactory in terms of action, but in character terms fits, though the method of resolution is rather lacking.

This is a short, dense series that I want more of.

I loved this anime show ever since I saw it on TechTV one day after school. I mean, it has to be great if I got one of my friends to like if he really hates anime stories. I gave the value a 9 because if it had just about 20 episodes, I could have got a perfect 10 to me, but since only 6 episodes is a bummer, I just had to give it 9. Other than that, it is probably one of the best anime storylines there, even though it isn't much original when written on paper, it surely shows on the screen.

Ok, After finishing all 6 episodes, I have to say the ending is a little weird and not that grand. For the last boss, she is sure is simple to defeat, which makes no sense why they do not kill her in the first place. I'm not going to spoil everything.
Animation is crisp, things you can expect for an anime that is released in 2002. No complains there.
For the sound, for an action based anime, the ending sure sucks big time. Why did they included an opera of an ending, which sometimes make me sleepy. The sound in the story is great.
Story, well maybe they have exhasted the series where I still don't quite understand. I'm not sure why the ending is so, maybe another sequel?Which is rare. Also, they have totally "killed" the first gatekeepers.
Characters, well all girls. What happened to the boys in the story? Even though the last one has at least one boy. Clearly making use of girls as heroes in the story.
This anime is great enough and for the first 3 episodes, you will not leave your chair since its so thrilling. Ending could be better though. Overall, if you like the first gatekeepers, and want to see a darker side to this story-you won't be dissapointed. As for the fun/comedy side, this story has none. Its more of a fanservice and completing lose ends(answering what happend to Reeiji Kageyama-last episode of first anime)
Kudos :D

Gatekeepers 21 is darker, a more serious story about well..greed. The animation has improved so much you'd be exhausted! GK21 is more exciting, compared to the TV series all 24 episodes combined. Some mysteries were answered, yet more were revealed. I love this anime, I think this is the best work of GONZO so far..It's very difficult to forget GK21

Very very very good, the characters are some of the deepest i've ever seen in an anime, and pioneer did a decent job on voice actors for it (tho i still hear the ghost girl giggling in my nightmares)
the opening theme is one of the best i've ever seen
many people i know were put off by the idea of using cell phones as weapons, but i think it's amusing
everything in this anime is balanced, plenty of angst (ayane) with a balance of upbeat friendliness (Miyu) and even your typical gung-ho sword wielding girl

Almost a direct contrast to the original Gatekeepers in terms of atmosphere and mood. I guess this is due to the difference in the social mentality of the eras of the 60s and the 21st century, which both GK and GK21 represent respectively. I wasnt born yet in the 60s of course, but i guess the 60s was probably a much more carefree and optimistic time compared to today. Gonzo get an A for incorporating this factor into their plot so nicely.

Likewise, the characters of GK21 seem more Gen-Y (cynical, impassive, antisocial, flexible morality, etc) than the cheerful, genki characters from the original GK, Isuzu in particular almost a manifest of 21st century youth. The magi... GATE powers even incorporate modern technology like mobile phones, staying true to the show's portrayal of the times.

As a culminative effect, GK21 sports a dark, brooding atmosphere. The character design does not fail to disappoint, the story link between GK and GK21 flowing smoothly and convincingly, evolving very well to reflect the change in times and society. Many anime sequels simply milk a cash cow, satisfy craving fans or just rehash old themes with spiffier artwork and CG. GK21, to Gonzo's credit, is NOT one of those.

I find it somewhat amusing that this is rated significantly higher than Gatekeepers, since the changes made between the series are almost a joke by the creators. This really makes it clear that the Gatekeepers is very self-conscious of itself and culture, and the series is as much social commentary as entertainment. The darker tone of Gatekeepers 21 is just supposed to be a reflection of modern thought as opposed to that in the 60s, and the story and characters are no more richer otherwise. (Obsessive readers may note that I actually scored it higher than Gatekeepers, which of course reflects my immersion in modern culture and its standards.)

Anyways, we get to learn more about Gates and Invaders, which was somewhat lacking in the original series, and it really is a good watch, especially as an OAV. The sound and music in particular is good, especially in the battles and the intro and ending songs.
