| I've seen an amount of anime and I can say this 12 Kokuki has changed how I think and me.
The storyline is amazing, the character development is astronomical and the moral and diverse way of thinking is just astounding.
The moral value and how they show it in the usual anime is usually quite straight forward and simple, something we know already perceived. However the roller coaster ride of 12 Kokuki has changed how I see the world.

| This starts off with the standard fantasy cliche of people being taken from our world to a fantasy world to fulfil their destiny and help save the fantasy world in some way.
Not a very original start but it was done reasonably well for the first few episodes and there was always the hope that it would become more original as it progressed.
The start is unfortunately the high-point. This just gets worse and worse as it progresses.
The main story arc consists of following some spoilt girls who sulk and complain for episode after episode.
The sulky girls and the main character learn a lesson to become better people resulting in a complete anti-climax.
Everything is this is predictable, almost everything in it is dull.
I watched until the end since the rating here was so high I figured it had to improve at some point but it doesn't.
A terrible waste of time.

| Memorable characters, well-made story, beautiful OST and animation, this anime is a piece of work, In despite of some episodes that you don't understand the reason to be, unless, to give a small comprehension about the atmosphere created.

| This is easily one of the greatest adventure/developmental series of all time. I think this series is what really got my fience hooked onto anime.
So a friend of mine had the entire series on DVD and highly recommended this series. After the first episode I turned it off and gave it back to him; I told him I only got through one episode, and it was one of the worst pieces of anime I had ever seen. So of course he insists that I trudge through the first few episodes and finish the anime.
So I gave it another shot; I put up with the first few episodes which I thought where horrible. Boy, was I glad I listened to him. The story really picked up and just engrossed me.
The series basically about a young girl named Yuko who is thrown into an entierly new universe for unknown reasons. In the beginning she has to come to terms with her situation, and try to open herself up; while she was in school, she was very sheltered and kind of hid her true self. As she begins to feel more comfortable about who she is, she seeks to find out more about this new world and why she had been thrust into it along with some of her class mates.
The animation in the early episodes is pretty bad imho, and a few of the subplot episodes as well; but for the majority of the series I thought the animation was very well done.
The sound and music are always spot on; the music pulls you into the series and never wants to let go.
The story is very epic. It is filled with drama, action, mystery, comedy, and even some romance. The main characters are well developed, and we really get to see the characters grow from adolescence into adulthood. It is easily one of the best stories of it's time.
There are a lot of characters, so it is difficult to develop all of them, but the main characters are very well developed. We get to see the lives of many characters, and they each have their own individual stories; we get to see and understand the reasoning behind the decisions they make as it pertains to the overall story.
Let me tell you something about value. This anime has TONS of it. I have watched the entire series four times; for being a large series, that really speaks for itself. I have watched this series twice by myself, and twice with my fience. Even if the series is not complete, it is still that good.
The series was highly enjoyable; we would watch episodes back-to-back, day-to-day whenever we got a chance. It took us awhile to finish, but it kept us hooked the whole way. I really cannot say enough about this series, except that I hope it is finished one day. It is already a masterpiece imho.

| I just finished watching this series for the third time, and remember having the same feelings the last time I watched it.
This is good anime if you can sit down with all the episodes so you can skip the fillers. Thinking how I would feel if I waited in anticipation for the weeks episode to see yet another filler is heart breaking.
Where it is good, it is great. Where it is bad, it just plain stinks. Overall, the good outweighs the bad, but it is sad that what lore claims is budgetary issues took out a series with such potential.

| For some reason I don't like to review most of the really popular anime series, but I kind of wanted to after watching this one.
At first, I was a little skeptical about this one, it seemed slow and the plot itself was a little confusing. Fortunately a plot almost needs to start out kinda slow at first if it wants to maintain momentum for long. (After all, do marathon runners sprint the entire distance in a race?) What I really enjoyed about this anime though was that it told a very good story as well as offering some good action. If I were to complain about this series at all, I'd have to say that to me they left the second part of the series unresolved and unfinished. My other complaint would be that they should've kept going with it!
Overall, it was a great series and I can see why it is near the top in the top 200! If you are looking for a fantasy/action anime with a good story, strong plot, and some action, then I highly recommend 12 Kokuki!

| I'm not sure if there's anything new to be said in a review of this show, but what the heck.
One thing I didn't notice others mention was the music, which I really enjoyed. I thought it was used really well throughout the series, and was one of the highlights of the show for me.
As others have mentioned, the show is incomplete. It also has some really weird pacing, in that there are basically 3 big story arcs in the series. What's odd is that the middle story arc has almost nothing to do with the other two, and to make things worse ends without any completion. Presumably, it's completion would form at least part of the remaining 23 episodes that have not yet (and may never) been made.
The first and third arcs form a single story, and the end of episode 39, as others have mentioned, ends this story very well. I'd almost suggest _just_ watching those stories (eps 1-14, then jump to 23-39). Episode 40 is a nice little coda to that story, too.
The last four episodes are a nice little standalone story, but they're ridiculously anti-climactic after the huge events of the preceding story. I'd suggest picking these up maybe a month after the other story ends, just for fun.
I really hope that Pierrot comes back and finishes the second story some day.

| First, and like other reviews probably say, this series does not completely cover the novels it is based on. There are 45 eps and Wikipedia says 68 were originally intended. There is no telling whether they will finish the rest or when.
The story covers a land where there are 12 kingdoms, somewhere in the ocean relatively far from Japan. It takes place in the feudal era; imagine a more serious version of Inuyasha. It's a serious anime with little in the way of comedy. There isn't any romance either. It's just about emperors, soldiers, politics and wars. So it was a little lacking in enjoyability for me, and it took 15 or 20 episodes for me to get into it. It takes about that long to get acquainted with all of the kingdoms and rulers. There is also magic and demons, again similar to Inuyasha. Speaking of which, Inuyasha's voice actor is in this too as a character of secondary importance.
The heroine is a teenage girl, and there are some other prominent female characters. I'm in agreement with other reviewers that ep 39 is a better end to this series than ep 45. The eps after 39 begin new arcs that are out of place, as they shift the focus away from the heroine onto other kingdoms and rulers. Overall I give this a mild recommendation, mainly if you like fantasy and historical settings with serious themes and tone.

| the animation was pretty good, nothing amazing. pretty simple overall but still pleasant to look at.
the story is straightforward but intricate. going from schoolgirl to queen, Youko gets a LOT of character development and it is fun to watch her grow as a person. after the initial story arc, the show takes a political focus, occasionally hard to follow due to lots of concepts and names.
i found the first story arc most entertaining, with the third being quite good as well, especially at the end. the 2nd and 4th were incomplete as such, so were a little dissatisfying.
it's definitely worth watching and it feels very epic. lots of character development and the whole show feels very realistic enough; everything including plot and characters is plausible.
good show, not a favorite but it was fun to watch.

| Ohh man is this anime over-rated, but that aside it isnt too bad, just about average maybe a tad above.
The 12 kingdoms has many of the things people are raving about in their reviews, but it lacks in many areas as well leaving it a near average anime not up with the top ten material like it is IMO.
I saw that it was rated 11 right behind some of my all time favorite anime's so I wondered if skipping it when it came out was some horrible mistake, like I was missing out on another anime I will love and cherish as a masterpiece.
Not exactly, but it does have many things that do set it apart as unique in a crowd of anime these days that is all becoming all to much like the others. If you want to see, no its more than just seeing it, if you want to FEEL the story of the Queen of Kei then you should definitely watch the twelve kingdoms. It is dragged out a bit at parts and frustrating to watch, but in the end I associate that with the frustration the characters have to face in their lives and it all comes together in the end, every aching moment leads up to the story's final few episodes.
So if my expectations werent soo high I would say this was definitely a good anime! And overall it was. Top 25 for me.
Mystere quoting wiki said they were planning on 68, oh goodness I am happy that didnt work out! So I would probably not watch the 40 something episodes again, but only because it was a slow anime I did happen to enjoy it in the end.
I do recommend it, but you have to bear with it and have patience at times. It pays off. Also IMO you can stop watching after episode 39 that would have been a better end to the anime rather than when it does end.
Please read on for my remarks on the specific pluses and minuses that all affected my opinion...

| I always wonder, why is this anime not as widely watch as naruto and such?
It has few super plot with alot of strong characters developments.
But then again it took me a year to fall in love with the anime. And it started by buying the heavily discounted legalised vcds.
Like most anime, one will need to stick it past the first few episodes to get into the plot.

| All said and done, 12 Kingdoms is an incomplete anime, and should be treated as such. According to wikipedia, Studio Pierrot intended it to be 68 episodes, and even now it's vague if they have any plans to continue it. That said, I found it quite enjoyable. Sure there are certain things that should have been changed about the beginning of the anime and the middle to end of the anime, but the rest of it was pure gold.

| Having watched this, I can understand why there are mixed views of this. On the one hand, the main character is very indecisive and whiny, not at all what you want to watch, (though only seen at the beginning) and the story is not completed at the end of the series. As well as having annoying characters such as Yuka. On the other hand, to see the transformation of Youko turn from this indecisive girl into a magnificant ruler was amazing. For me even though the story was not completed, did not matter as such as all I wanted to see was Youko and her progression to the throne and fulfilling her destiny. Although, I'll admit that I did want to see the Tai Kingdom story through. The music was befitting of the scenes and had a very calming sense to it. I would definitely rewatch this again as it is one of the best fantasy animes out there!

| 12 Kingdoms aka Junni Kokkuki is an epic anime based on the novels by Fuyumi Ono. The anime starts out like any other fantasy anime - a 16 year old girl who lives a mundane life in Tokyo is taken to a different world. However from there on - it takes different route from fantasy anime. It instead takes the route which makes it an anime worthy of watching by any lover of fantasy - anime viewer or whatever. This is because of the brilliance of story telling, the development of characters and good animation which make this series as a one-of-its kind in anime.

| I've only watched the first 3 episodes, so I can't make a comment on the full series...but so far, the characters SUCK. First, u got the most irritating girl for the lead character. I think her name was yoko. All she does it whine and cry. Then u got the outcast bitch in yuka or whatever her name is (short black hair). Who the fuck does she think she is...from what I can tell, she thinks shes somehow important to this other world, but shes just an unwanted tagalong. Its only been 3 episodes, but already, I'm sick of these characters.
Forced myself to watch up to ep 15 atm. ppl say its a great anime, so ill try to finish it; but so far, the duo of Yoko and Yuka are perhaps the worst two lead characters that I have ever seen. Yoko has ALREADY learned that if she refuses to become empress and return to japan, her kirin will die, and so will she. BUT, WTF, she is still saying she wants to go back to japan cuz she won't make a good empress. . . OMFG. Plz, quit your crying and just die already. At least Yuka, after 1/3 of the series, FINALLY realizes that THIS ANIME ISN'T ABOUT HER! thank god!
finished ep 29...i'm hoping that all these new characters have something to do with the story...i'm glad that yoko finally took charge, but then pierrot introduces 2 more very irritating characters in suzu and that former hou princess. I can't tell until I finish the series, but, this anime is looking very much like a studio pierrot creation. ie story is very choppy (perhaps from trying to lengthen it), and full of what seem to be filler type episodes.
finished the series. I really can't understand why ppl hold this anime in such high regard...
for starters, it could have been 20 episodes shorter, take out the 4 recap episodes, take out taiki, take out hou-hime and suzu. 4 recap ep in a 45 ep series is just fucking ridiculous. taiki took up almost 10 episodes, and well, they just left his story hanging. it almost seemed like they would connect it to the main story by using yuka back in hourai, but pierrot seemed to forget they spent 10 worthless episodes on taiki. houhime and suzu stories took up another 10 ep, and thier connection to the main story was just too weak. totally filler ep. and the ending 5 ep about that history of en...pretty much more filler ep.
as with many of pierrots series that i watched (hikaru no go, naruto, bleach off the top of my head) 12 kokki seemed very promising. The concept of the anime, the world that they created was great. BUT, the way the story was chopped up and stretched out made the value of the anime much lower that it could have been. There are times when I wish an anime would come out with more filler ep. BUT, this is ONLY when I've become very attached to the characters. 12 kokki gave me no attachment whatsoever to its characters; as I found practially all the characters from unloveable, to irritating, and all the way to hated. It can be said that there was ample "character development." almost so much that it was freaking ridiculous. Most of the characters went from negative to positive(polar opposites). their development was so extreme it seemed fabricated and totally unbelievable. In the end, i think pierrot tried too hard to get too much outta what was a good concept.

| I can't honestly say I enjoyed this anime. From the very beginning I found the characters to be horribly annoying (their flaws are melodramatically exaggerated and cliche), the story is inconsistent and filled with lapses of episodes in which nothing of significance happens (there were far too many subplots and changes in perspective), the character interactions throughout were somewhat lacking and left more to be desired and finally, the story in itself lacked any closure, it just ended.
But at the same time, I can see where people loved this anime. It was amazingly deep, the world itself was very much alive (its not everyday where you come across a somewhat 'accurate' portrayal of the workings of government), in which the characters play an active part (at one point the girls are almost sold into prostitution). And then, what stood out most to me, was when Yoko finally took control of her court, she was breathtaking, to see her progression as a character; it was absolutely beautiful.
I guess what I have to say is, if you have the patience to watch an anime thats 45 episodes, well, this might be the one for you. In my case, I felt it could have been about 10 episodes shorter and that the characters could've been a bit more rounded (they come off a bit too strongly).

| Watched all 45 Eps
Animation : very fair. drawing is neat and easy to watch, faces are harmonious and offer differences in their expression, animation is fluid and pleasurable to watch. Colors are a bit dull though, but contribute to the mood
Sound : forgettable OP and ED. suitable but not oustanding soundtrack. fair sound effects
Story : a strong point of this anime is the deep imagination that leads the storyline. a lot of depth, very consistent and solid scenario. a real content.
Regretfully, some eps were dedicated to summarizing previous eps, which did not have added value. I regret there was no romantical involvement at all
Character : I very seldomly give 10 in any review, but the outstanding richness of all the different characters, even minor ones, was key in me giving such marks. Key characters evolve, they display their original mindset and show a real depth that make them appear very realistic. a true gem for an aspect that lack in many animes.
Value : I think it should be rewatchable. I can't say before having rewatched it, which I little do
Enjoyment : this anime made me watch a few time past 4 AM despite me working the following day. I really got hooked and it deserves a strong point for this.
In short, my main grudge against this anime is that the filling eps (3 or 4 out of 45) could be replaced by meaningful ones.
The scenario offer enough potential to make nice OVA à la Ruroni Kenshin Reminiscence. Something that exploit the link between Modern Japan and those kingdoms would be interesting.
Highly recommanded

| This is one of my favourite anime! This anime taught me a lot about morals and internal strength. The journey of the main character Yoko is fascinating and her maturation and development is progressive throughout the show. At the end, she becomes a real hero: elegant, regal, and strong. I love how all the characters and events in the story seem very real. One thing I hate about animes is characters that are abnormally nice or cute, such as Strawberry Panic! People aren't like that in real life and I have difficulty related to characters like that. This story has no "convenient" happenings or fake personalities that I hate about some animes. I like that the main character has to struggle in order to develop into an adult and become the hero in the end.

| juuni kokki is perfect in every way. it has an inriguing story that pulls you into the world of 12 kingdoms.
the story focuses areound a girl named yoko. she is the class representative in school and always tries to be perfect. though she is not very popular in class. one day a mysterious man named keiki crosses her way and tells that she was assigned to be the empress of his country. now yokos life changes drastically and she is taken into the world of keiki. but on their way they get attaked and the goup is parted. now yoko has to travel with two classmates of her through the unknow world. yoko just wants to get out of thsi world because she thinks she doesnt belong here. but this will be proved wrong.
the character developing is the best about juuni kokki. in the first place yoko acts egoistically. but after some time she learns to fight for people and becomes a good empress this way. the other characters that came with her to the other world are also well done. the girl thinks that japan was not the right place for her. she thinks that juuni kokki is the world suited for her. she also becomes an enemy for yoko.
the storyis very complex. there are many different countries which names are very similar. but you get used to it and you begin to hate or like some countries. if i would describe it in one word the story is breath-taking.
the only thing i disliked was the end. i want MORE!!!!

| Wow!
That is an understatement after watching this epic of a beautifully told tale. This one has one hell of a tale to tell, and it does it so well it feels like I am watching something like Lord of the Rings all over again. If you are looking for a great fantasy type anime, look no further, 12 kokki will satisfy your needs… and more.
The Story starts out on a high, after the first episode you will know whether this is your kind of thing or not. But even if you think it is all action and not story right off the bat, make sure you watch the first 10 episodes at least before making rash decisions. If it still hasn’t hooked you by then… then I am afraid something may be wrong with you ;) or maybe you are just not into fantasy.
It is mainly about a girl (Yoko) in high school who was always trying to please everybody by being the “good girl”, she never sticks up for herself and her actions depend on the other person. She is so unlikable in the beginning it is almost unbearable how someone like her can be the lead. But as you will find out, her character will grow, she will face evil, and she may even become evil… but without spoiling lets just say that at the end of the 45 episodes you will see she is totally opposite to that of the Yoko you saw in episode 1.
It is hard to get into to too much detail here because lets face it, this is based off a novel – you know this is going to be a “long, but well told story”. Well I am not suggesting all novels have good stories, but I can vouch that this one scores a 15 out of 10 for story if possible. The amount of depth present is amazing. The only minor problems may be at the beginning, when you are trying to understand the story since everything is only explained after the first 13 or so episodes. However I like the fact that the story was told in this manner, because now you are experiencing the new world along with Yoko. Neither you nor Yoko will know what the hell is going on, living in a world with demon-like dogs and beasts, having people speak a totally different language, having an unknown entity inside you… it all adds to the uniqueness and excitement of the show. Both you and Yoko will be on a ride for a great adventure. There are hints throughout the first 13 episodes explaining the world and its on-goings but they are done in such a way as to keep you guessing about what will happen your first time through.
However this story is basically told in 2 parts. The first part is about Yoko’s journey to learning about the world and fulfilling her destiny. The second part is very political and may turn the viewer off if they are not into that kind of thing. It mainly focuses on how the governments of the 12 realms should work, and how it works in reality. Although even if this may not be you cup of tea, it defiantly makes you think about humanity as a whole and makes you think about how “you” should continue lead your life.
The characters are unforgettable, especially the lead Yoko. The amount of ups and downs she experiences basically marks all the times you have come to love and hate her. Yuuka’s character shows so much bitterness towards Yoko it immediately cements her as Yoko’s rival. This is true only for the first half of the show though, I hoped it would have continued (I will say why it didn’t continue later as not to spoil it for you). Almost all the characters have or have had flaws in them, and the story breaks down the flaws in each characters over the period of 45 episodes. The viewer in turn begins to accept these flaws in most cases and sympathizes for the character as their respective background or past is covered. It is very easy to relate to these characters that have all these flaws, it shows that they are still human – it brings a realistic feel to the story which helps draw the viewer deeper into the story. There are a few characters with very few flaws however, most notably is the mouse and Emperor of En, they are as pure as can be – what humans should strive to be imo.
There are new characters introduced all the time, which brings me to too of my favorite secondary characters which are only introduced much later on. The development of these two similar young girls is probably the best I have seen in any anime, you will hate them at some point and you will love them at another. You will know who they are when you see them. By the time episode 39 comes around you will be feeling goose bumps thanks to the story and character development between these two and others… well at least I did.
Overall you will find yourself disliking some of the characters at some point, at other points you will find your self hating the “innocent” people of that world. It will only bring questions to your mind as to whom is right in the case? Who should I side with? Luckily the anime fleshes out the options and almost always brings the two different contrasts in opinion to one solid conclusion leaving the viewer more than happy.
I cannot stress enough about how much I enjoyed this classic piece. There are no negatives I can think of (only one, which I will get to if you read more). Every character that is introduced has a meaning – and a loveable or hateable quality attached to them (this usually changes as the characters progress). And the story usually divides between 2 or 3 smaller stories of different characters throughout the 12 kingdoms before coming to a full circle and ending each arc (2 main ones) in awesome style. In short, I loved it.
