Hajime no Ippo has the words "The Fighting" in the title. You know, since its based around fighting and the series has lots of it in it. However, in terms of the amount and type of fighting.. Hajime no Ippo should be called "The Teasing" or "The Play-Fighting" or something of that nature. Grappler Baki is basically just non-stop fighting.. almost every single episode. But dont get me wrong.. Grappler Baki doesnt have anything on Hajime no Ippo in my opinon.

Lets see, the animation was a little different in this anime, and a little hard to get used to. But even after I got used to it, i realised that almost everyone looked the same. And, the amount of muscles drawn constantly was unrealistic and sick looking. On an up note, there is a little bit of 3d animation used, and the fight scenes ARE pretty cool to watch.

The sound was probably one of the best aspects of this series.. the OP was cool. The music theme throughout was decent but forgettable.

Now onto the low points.. and the most important points.. Character and Story. The story is very generic: I want to be stronger and become the strongest! Hmm.. what other animes have we seen that has the same sort of thinking? That type of plot isn't always bad.. especially if the rest of the plot is done well (like Naruto, HnI for example). However it was the only one clear plotline in this anime, and it was the only thing they continuously beat into our minds. Not only that, but.. the ending.. (cough..cough..looseends..). Now, i know that there is a Grappler Baki 2, which i will eventually watch one way or another, because basic or not i want to see how Baki manages to beat the monster Yujiro Hanma.

Characters were also pretty bad, both in design and in personality. For most of the anime its really difficult to tell if Baki has any sort of mind at all, except for getting stronger and fighting. Not only that, but the design was laughable at times. Just when you think: HOLY CRAP! LOOK AT HOW FREAKISHLY HUGE THAT GUY IS! HES THE TALLEST MASS OF MUSCLE EVER!.... along comes someone whos even taller and has even more muscles. SOOOOOooo realistic.

But of course, even though this was a series that seems to follow the laws of our world, but disregards them most of the time, it still was very enjoyable to watch. I feel I could actually rewatch some of the fight scenes because, as bad as the rest of the anime was, the fighting scenes were VERY cool.

EDIT: After finishing Grappler Baki 2 (which is really just the second season) I felt that I had to change some of the scores. In the large tournament, after the first round or two, the character development actually improved quite a bit - they delved into the past life of each fighter in the fight and showed what motivates them, or what they wished for. I increased character score because of this. However, at the same time, the only available subs for the entire half of the series are extremely horrible. Lowered Value score significantly. Still enjoyable - its wierd.. I know this series has a bad plot and all, but its still fun as heck to watch.

The coolest martial-arts anime series there is! Compared to other martial-arts anime like Hajime no Ippo this one beats it. The story may not be great but it's very a entertaining anime.

This is the best fighting action anime out right now! Although the story is not the greatest, it has the best fights I've seen in an anime in a long time!

*Review as of Episode 19*
A good series.
This show really depends on the type of person you are. I dig fighting and working out so this show really interests me. Saying that "most" guys should feel the same way.
The animation was a bit slack at the beginning but now its alot better.
The soundtrack isn't great. It doesn't stand out as in other anime.
Character's are good. Just makes you wanna see how they fight. When a new guy comes and they're hell cocky (and they usually are) you just say: "Kick his ass BAKI!"
This show will seriously have your jaw to the floor every episode.
Go see it!

To be honest, I really wasn't expecting all that much from this series. I'd seen the movie and wanted to go a little deeper into the Hanma story. So I bought the boxset and checked it out. All I can say is wow. Nonstop action. Thats all I can say lol. Action as In someone gets there ass kicked every 2 minutes lol. The fights are great too. Although they are unrealistic and over the top they were very enjoyable. No 2 fights are the same. To put it simply, after watching all 24 episodes I imediatly got online and got the 2nd volume to the series. If you like fighters "Grappler Baki TV" will give you all the fighting you could ask for.

This is basically a fighting show with the focus on getting stronger and defeating an arch-nemesis, in this case, Baki's father. But what makes it particularly appealing is the relationships between the characters, particularly between Baki and his mother. The relationship between his parents is interesting as well -- messed up, but interesting.

As expected, the actual plot is pretty weak, but this isn't the kind of show you watch when you're in the mood for intellectual stimulation.

The animation style for the characters, arguably, isn't pretty, but the quality of the animation is good. Once I got over Baki's pug-nose, I actually found the animation style refreshing since it is so unique.

Baki is an addicting anime in the same sense DBZ is. It's not particularly great or original but it works in an established genre and does what it does well. So much anticipation is built up surrounding fight scenes that you want to keep watching hopin to see a good one. The animation in the series is fairly good. The character design is fairly unoriginal and often ugly. The fight scenes are the highlight of this show though and are great. This series has a pretty dumb (though simple) storyline riddled with unintentionally hilarious dialogue such as "Oh no his special technique is explosive gripping strength!". The characters themselves are pretty interesting and most have their own special technique or attribute. Almost every fight is Baki gets crap kicked out of him, trains then fights enemy and defeats it. It's sort of like a martial arts anime Rocky. Sure, it's predictable, but its fun and loaded with action. If youre a fan of fighting anime, like me, this is very recommended. Others might want to steer clear.

this anime is really great , even if the chara design is not one of the best i've seen. but they have strong personalities (look at baki's father!!!) .
For those u know about it (i've seen wishmaster have the whole series) is that the same one (i've seen 2 seasons were sold on dvd but neither of those 2 look like it's the same than this one when i look at the pictures of the boxes)

This show is definitley intended to appeal to a certain niche audience. To my knowledge, no other anime series is so directly focused on martial arts and warrior ethos as Grappler Baki. Beyond that, this show has some grueling depictions of self-discipline and determination in the face of 'real' opposition. I use the word 'real' because although the show is a fantasy, we're not talking about lithe, pretty boys who all weigh 90 pounds and speak with an efeminate flare who are able to defeat hordes of enemies with curious looking projectiles. No, on the contrary, there's even an episode that mentions the fact that Baki's body is tortured by his rigorous training so much so that his musculature warps his physique. Great series, but definitely not for everyone.

The story is not bad till now, but i dont know why those guys below me gave full 10 points for animation of that show.
They must be blind, or they just havent seen a real 10 points worth anime.
Honestly, the animation of this show sux: there are lot of stillframes & framerepeatings...
Character design is also horrible, damm u just got to see the face of the main character...his parents must be blood related. o_0
But if you give a f*ck about animation, and looking for some buttkicking fighting anime, this could be one for you..

Btw
regarding to Animenfo, G. baki has 24eps in total, but i can definitelly say its got 48, well maybe more, but iam pretty sure about first 48.

greetz,
& happy 2003 to all

Ok disregard the earlier review he know shit. This anime is awsome, yes the character design is a little "rough" but that does not mean its well done or looks good. Thats just they way the artist draws, also if every anime was the same and had the same character design it would suck ass. But anyway, this is a great series, and should be stuck to for more thatn 3 eps unlike the preivious reviewer. I picked story 7 cus i myself have only watch 6 eps and do not know how its going to come out.
