A huge improvement on its predeccessor, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is better in every single category than its 1985 brethren.

The animation is good, and the use of dark colors and dreary backgrounds accentuates the whole gothic and spooky feel of the anime to really get you creeped out and wary of any dark creatures in the night ready to pounce.

The sound is very fitting, especially when combined with the animation, and adds to the mood of the film. However, there isn't anything that really sticks out in the soundtrack and the voice actors are only decent.

The story is somewhat mediocre and unoriginal; you won't find may surprises here, just a tragic romance mixed with some action. The plot is easily the worst part of the aime.

The characters are what makes this anime interesting. D is cool, and is the epitome of the cool, calm, indifferent vampire-type character. Side characters are also interesting, especially the Markus Brothers' crew of hunters, and the villians are very sinister while still having a depth and complexity to their characters to make them more than just your typical villians.

I have rewatched this anime a few times, and I would say this anime has great value just for being such an original work; much more so than the original Vampire Hunter D, this edition takes everything that was good about the original and improves upon it, while simultaneously reworking all that was bad about the first one. Truly a great among vampire animes.

I probably would have enjoyed this anime more if the story had been more complex and interesting, but as it stands it is still an above-average anime in terms of enjoyment.

Vampire Hunter D...I really didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. But it is a very entertaining movie with mostly beautiful animation. Though I must say some of the character designs did throw me off (Leila for example was an ugly creation). But there is something that just pulls you in.Perhaps it's the pacing of the story and the cool action scenes...or perhaps it's the unique sweet romance story brewing in the background. I don't know what it is, but there is something that makes this movie work.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is one of my favorite Vampire oriented series to date (aside from Shingetsutan Tsukihime and Vampire Princess Miyu). What makes this movie so alluring is that it incorporates an attempt at tragic love story and a twisted scheme rolled into a well-to-do and adaptive setting. The problem is that it isn't really fully developed, not as much as it could have been. The animation for this movie is utterly gorgeous, from the opening sequence where the lovely Charlotte is abducted from her bed and stolen away by a seemingly cold vampire Lord.

Enter D, short for "dunpeal" (of both a vampire father and a human mother), a immortal man cursed by fate, but hired by Charlotte's father to retrieve his daughter, dead or alive. He's not alone in his search, as a group of renegades also seek the bounty and impede D's quest to retrieve the girl. From then on it's a series of interesting encounters, great action sequences, touching scenes of a romance not meant to be, and a sinister trap waiting for all parties involved at their potential destination.

Great animation, excellently crafted music, a decent storyline and cast of characters (though with the confines of a movie, they aren't as developed in background as it would be in a typical series). Overall, a well deserved add to any anime collection, especially those looking for horror/vampire oriented series.

Vampire Hunter D - something like an anime version of Blade mixed with a Spaghetti Western. However, this movie aint the type that when you finish it - you come out of the hall saying - 'COOL!!!' However, this is by no means a very bad movie either. Just mediocre.

Animation
And by no means is animation mediocre, This is very high grade stuff. While it is not drawn using conventional Anime style, it is the style which gives the story a very dark, gothic type of look.
The characters are drawn exceptionally well. The backgrounds are spectacular.

Sound
Good stuff here as well. This also adds to the crrepy feeling of the movie. But the background music sometimes gets a bit overdone.

Story
Ah... This is where Vampire Hunter loses out. The story while by no means bad is not original. It is not very fiery either which would be demanded by an action flick. It goes on its own pace while being excessively slow at some points and being extra fast at others.
Still, it is a decent story.

Characters
We have a winner! D is so cool!!! Definitely cooler than Blade. And best of all, he kicks ass. A very cool hero. His hand is also nice. It keeps adding to the comic relief of the movie.
The noble is also well developed. Won't say anting more about him or it will spoil stuff for the guys who haven't seen this flick

Value
Like I said earlier - This aint he movie which leaves you gasping for breath. If you expect that - then you are in for a disappointment. This is OK stuff.

Enjoyment
Once again - I'll use my line - Ok stuff, don't pin very high hopes. A decent movie. Pulls itself through without letting you down, but not letting you fell high either.

ok....first things first...this a must for every goth fan....it is a goth fan's wet dream come true......it's the most well prepared and nicely thought movie i've ever seen related to the vampire genre

to put things in order animation was simply amazing!!!....the backgrounds were the best i've ever seen in an anime.....the character designs were nice as well...the choice of colors was really nice too...

sound was spectacular for this kind of movie....it fitted 100% the pacing of what was happening at the screen...those two were mutually connected....music and story went together....the music was made with the aid of a choir and an orchestra and specifically the choir's voices, screams etc were creating a great feel and mood to what was happening at the time

story was nice.....really nice...nothing to blame them here....it had everything.....action, blood, hunting, search, adventure, love and very creative imagination.....the action scenes and the villains were very original....it started out quite simply and lame *a girl is abducted....go find her* but it build up really really good.....it wasn't just an adventure to find and return the girl and all's fine and bye bye......you were faced with moral dillemas and life anxieties (by leila the blonde short-haired woman) throughout the plot development and resolutions at the end which may not be quite expected..it gives you also a vision to the future and an answer to leila's anxiteties..also, the characters toward the end of the movie grow, evolve and mature after all of their adventure (both leila and D)...they grow feelings which were not visible throughout all this mayhem adventure with huntings and killings....they become more human to our eyes.... i also liked very much the ending with the very well-stated joke from the thing in D's hand

to characters now....i didn't exactly like any character....although they were not one-dimensional *the ones that they had the chance to be developed more extensively*....it has nice characterization....

value? well it's value is 10 for sure!!!!!
this movie is very carefully made...it will surely entertain you and you can see that they put very very much effort in everything related to the movie....from the plot,to the characters,to the music,to the visuals..everything are very well done

that's all....see it now!

Well there is no doubt in my mind that Vampire Hunter D is a really good movie... It's also a good example to note the difference between the way Hollywood makes movies and the way the japanese do.

The Hollywood industry concentrates on exagerated action scenes, sexy girls and cheap comedy to make an excuse of a story while showing really undeveloped and one sided characters (all good or plain evil) concentrating more on the mainly on teenage viewer who don't care about anything else than music, fashion, explosions and sexy girls.

The japanese version of a vampire movie still shows some really nice and original action scenes, but it also concentrates more on the story and characters who are no longer a marketing sacrafice excuse but actually have a certain level of deepness and seem more interesting managing to create that sentimental stimulus that makes a movie memorable... It is also admirable the way they manage to blend Fantasy with Sf, this is a thing I've seen in many animes, the logic explanation of an ilogic element.

Yes this movie had some of the best action scenes, well coregrafed and thought out, music well in tune with the action, probably one of the best soundtracks in termss of accordance with the story, backgrounds were also very detailled and nice, and aldough the character design wasn't on my taste it still didn't bother me that much.

The story was action packed with some twists of romance, friendship and drama.. simple but effective... The characters were standard I would say, I didn't really like any of them exept the guy with the bow and the 3 monster guards... Could have been better, but it's ok like this too.

You should watch this since it has a lot of work put in it.

Over the years, Hollywood has been steadily changing the concept of a "vampire" movie. Instead of the corny accents, the most formal of clothing, it's usually hordes and hordes of teenagers or young adults that are being slain by a hunter. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust is the closest thing to a true vampire movie. D is a dunpeal (half-breed of vampire and human) who goes around slaying vampires in order to receive thank you fees from the people of the area. Here, Meier Link kidnapped Charlotte during the night. Unfortunately for him, Charlotte has a rich family who will hire the finest hunters and fighters alive for her safe return. D was hired, as well as another famous vampire hunting crew the Markus brothers. Now, these two sides are racing against each other to see who will rescue the girl first, and get the higher end of the money.

Unlike in many anime movies, the story in the beginning doesn't get boring once. Plus, it gets better and better, adding more twists to keep things constantly satisfying and enjoyable. What makes the story so loveable is how it doesn't really label the bad and good guys. There's really no bad or good guys; it's the perception of the characters that makes everyone look like the good and bad guy. Everyone thinks D is an evil person, taking advantage of everyone's need of him. Meier Link is also presumed as the bad guy, but what if he has justifiable reasons for his actions? In a way, the story reminds me a lot of Escaflowne because there's really no certain sides.

What's really neat about Bloodlust is that it combines sci-fi, fantasy, and olden times in order to create one of the most amazing atmospheres in an anime movie. I bet you've never seen a high tech motorcycle chase down an old carriage powered by horses before. The animation is also as equally shocking and astonishing. The fight scenes are just so sweet to watch, even though some may end in disappointment because of length. In fact, some of the material leaves a ton of potential for an awesome fighting or action game. The world is just beautiful and so imaginative that matches the scales of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. The characters are also crisp and smooth.

The characters themselves are pretty interesting. D looks and sounds like those badass characters that rarely raise their voice that don't care much about the world. But a little surprise at the end of the movie changes all of that, as well as something in the middle. Meier Link is also another interesting character, as well as his crewmen who are equally as hearted as him. The Markus crew aren't what they seem as well. To summarize them all in one word, they're very original and unexpecting. Not only is D one of the most badass swordsman around, but he has a really distinct and awesome personality.

Bloodlust is one of the most overall impressive movies I've ever seen. The characters are so original; the story is both morally deep, and interesting all in itself; the animation is extremely impressive for a movie released several years’ back. Fans of the more classic and truer vampire tales will definitely find a lot to love about Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust that doesn't pit a hunter slaying endless hordes of teenager vampires.

Just finished watching this movie. I havent read the novel and have no clue about the character. why has he a talking left hand!!?? whats that practical for except absorbing magic and being a nuisance? lets not talk further or funny thoughts come into my mind....anyway. My feelings are mixed. On one hand (no, not the ''Lefthand''):

This movie manages to make improvements on its predecessor in just about every possible way. The extremely polished animation gives the anime it's gothic feel. But although at first sight the animation seem practically flawless, something is lacking in the female character designs... when all the components of the faces come together, beauty always seems to be missing. There isn't really any female characters in here that are attractive... some even have a kind of masculine kind of look about them.

Just like the original movie, this new movie is able to generate a dark and intense atmosphere, and it does it even better than the original. I thought the music was especially impressive in doing this. Far superior production resulted in this feeling a lot more like a horror than the first movie.

The plot, though, suffers from the same problems as the original. It's confusing and imcomplete. By the end, I still don't know much about this guy D, although I'm beginning to suspect the producers designed it this way. I was puzzled by the relationship between Charlotte and Meire... their background just weren't given at all. They never really explained about that hunter with the spectral powers either. I keep expecting answers to these puzzles but the anime doesn't seem to be concerned about giving them, which is a bit annoying. Despite its flaws, the story is less muddled than the original film. At least you can tell what's going on... you just don't know the background behind it. Also there were elements in the story that seem out of place, like the whole rocket ship thing came off as a bit of a cheesy thing.

My final verdict: a very satisfactory gothic horror style movie. A recommended watch.

This movie was impressive and extremely artistic; I was blown away by the entire package. In many instances, spectacular graphics, gripping music and even outstanding direction cannot save a weak story. But in this case, the production was so brilliantly executed, the music was so suited the changing moods, and the visuals were so deeply intertwined with the telling of the story, that the quality of the direction really did enhance the story.

After seeing the original movie, I was ready for this one to improve upon that heap of crap in every conceivable way. Had this just been mediocre, it STILL would have been an improvement. But no, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust isn't preoccupied with merely exceeding the standards of its stinky predecessor; instead, it becomes a completely different movie of its own, one so fully-realized and oozing with creativity that it is impossible to resist. Breathtaking gothic imagery, exciting fight scenes, and a heartbreakingly bittersweet plot all converge to create a cinematic experience outdone by few other films.

Perhaps it's not really fair to compare Bloodlust to the first movie. Not only are they completely different plotlines, but this film also has a 15-year advantage on its ancestor as well. Simply put, however, this film completely redeems the unhallowed sin Madhouse committed with the first film simply by virtue of making the entire movie work. There is almost no filler, empty space, or any boring moments to be seen in this movie; every bit of dialogue is thoroughly engaging and the direction is watertight. It's as if to say the staff all had a reunion after a decade and a half, huddled around and some guy said "Hey, who here's been feeling kinda guilty about Vampire Hunter D? Well, I've got an idea..." Obviously Madhouse went wild with their resources here, and in doing so presented some of the highest production values of any anime to date. The animation is nothing short of breathtaking. Within the first minute we are treated to a dazzling array of imagery: fountains freezing in midair, roses greying and withering, steel crosses distorted with not a perpetrator in sight. I had a huge grin slapped on my face right from the start...one that rarely vanished throughout the movie, except in times of crisis or peril. Fantastic not only in execution but stylism as well, Bloodlust features fantastic settings and quirky, memorable characters. Some of the character design is a little shady (All hail Leila, Queen of the Sideburns!), but still, who can resist D? On top of that, the movie's lovingly rendered gothic universe does a far better job at immersing me than the original; I remember laughing derisively when one character commented about it being the year 5000 in the first movie.

The graphics aren't the only awe-inspiring thing to behold here. This movie's competent plot takes a spin on an age old question: Does love conquer all? At first the movie seems two-dimensional in the casting of its villains and protagonists, but as time goes on and we learn more about the characters this line is visibly blurred. Ultimately, who is to fault here? Meier Link is possibly one of the best 'villains' ever to grace a movie. Like in Rurouni Kenshin: Reminiscence, his actions and demeanor manage to tell so much about his character in such a short time. One particularly telling scene is a confrontation on the bridge between he and the hunters. To prove that his love for Charlotte is not just one of deception, he steps out into the flesh-searing light to embrace her. An immeasurably poignant scene from something billing itself as an action anime. Charlotte, a character who receives minimal screen time, also conveys emotional depth not seen in many full-length series. The traveling band of hunters we are generally strapped with are a rowdy and enjoyable, if not shallow, bunch...and good old D himself is as interesting as ever. Alucard has nothing on this mofo. Granted, the characters are not always entirely realized. I would really have liked to known more backstories than just that of Leila and D, especially Grove; such a unique power, and no explanation for it! Despite this, though, the cast of Bloodlust is well-balanced and never too cumbersome. Perhaps it's for the best that some characters didn't receive pasts, because they may simply have bogged down what the anime is really about. The characters to watch here are Meier Link, Charlotte and D...and maybe Leila.

The one problem in this anime's direction is that it feels extremely linear. The structure is just event after event without much time to just stop and think. It keeps the anime's flow consistent, but just a little time to reflect would be nice; we get one important scene like that, but it feels abbreviated and contradictory. Also, about fifteen minutes towards the end of the movie, things begin to get extremely confusing for no particular reason...crazy vampire mind tricks. Despite these almost negligent pitfalls, however, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is absolutely brimming with forethought and brilliance. Inner struggles, moral dilemmas and a delightfully complete train of thought set this movie apart from any generic vampire horror. Faultless in its own right, this has every right to become a classic movie and nothing less. Absolutely recommended.

Breathtaking story, that will totally engulf You with it's gothic imagery, overwhelm You with care for every little piece and take You into world were vampires rule with terror and class one may seen in a very few masterpieces and true works of art.

'Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust' is *just* this.

One of the movies I will remember for all my life, and enjoy it with it's every minute.

While in it's prequel D was already cool, here he managed to completely embarass Alucard, and every other character (vampiric or not) that comes to mind.

Visuals in the movie are nothing less than perfect, and it's proven every few minutes with a scene or sequence so superbly done that it's hard to keep Your eyes in place.
From the very first moments when You are gliding among the crosses and later watching vampire carriage going through the city You see how every tiny detail is done with enormous care.
Crosses bent and break, water freezes, plants are withering and animals are fleeing. And the scene with breaking mirror and later reflection!! OH MY GOD!!

And such level of animation is kept through WHOLE FRIGGIN MOVIE. I watched this work of art dubbed and I must say again that it totally molded me and completely got me conversed.
If You have a friend or acquaintance that tells You that anime dub is no good (as I was prior to watching this) then I say to him, give this one a try.

When I heard all those accents and little manneurisms in character's speech I was almost purring from bliss. I could easily distinguish voices with my eyes shut and that *is* quite something.

Plus, there is not even one voice I can say sth wrong about.

I can't praise it enough. It's superb movie, and I want to watch it again, even though I just finished watching it for the third time.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is I would guess the most pure gothic anime out there, and in that respect it does well. It also attempts to add to that atmosphere with some interesting character development to the story, which at times works well.

I finally saw this one and I am impressed. For a 2001 release, the animation is excellent.Charater design is awesome.
The story is quiet simple but not boring.
The main characters are pretty deep and mysterious.I wanted to know more about D though.
The english voice overs are very well done and it made the characters alive and believable.
Value wise, It will part of my anime collection.

Nice, the story of Bloodlust was quite surprisingly good, even during the time I thought it would be fairly mediocre of when I first saw it a few years ago. With the improved animation, while being captivating on keeping its highly unique gothic designs from each of the characters; as to having a certain appeal on how well it was greatly connected with the whole eerie environment. The overall soundtrack and seiyuu were also nicely done that adds well throughout the storyline. The side characters weren’t too much on my favor, which were the other hunters who eventually helped D on saving the girl. The main character was basically of what he was expected to be from the previous movie, a mild manner person who is just as content on wherever he goes. As on how it earnestly progresses, it basically had a focus around the love and drama between the girl and another vampire that happens to be in bind, when D being in the middle of the turmoil on saving her for the task he was rewarded for, let alone dealing with the other bounty hunters. As for him being a vampire, the life he that he has chosen to have a integrity and a sense of purpose in his life of having the ideal values of his own will, even if some the people who are portraying him as a Vampeal, or known as a half-vampire, he does have more intentions of being more human than an actual vampire in any case. More likely, he does resolved to vastly make his own destined meaning, on the life he had sacrificed in the unsolved previous life that never seems to be explain, but did give out a few clues in both of the movies, with having the persona that seems to be kept by his own terms. It was the basis on how he has lived during the time he has served, on his countless demises that he could ever remember, and on making himself isolated through his existence from anyone that he had to only rely on. As it turns to be good and decent for its quality in art and enhanced storyline, don’t expect anything cheerful or cutesy from this one. It is mostly watchable, only for those who are actually familiar with the genre; moreover, anyone who had some great impressions with the first movie.

This is a sooped-up version of the original movie. The animation is outstanding, I don't think that many anothers comes close to this high standard (Blood possibly).

The story however is a pretty standard chase-type scenario. The love story between vampire and human is a good idea, but not really explored or even explained in any depth. Two rivals groups after the same prey, that's new! Some nice touches but lets itself down in the end. Don't get me started on the ending!!!

Again the outstanding character is the hand-parasite, which when you think about it is rather strange. All others are pretty dull. Even the werewolf (and i love werewolves) is awful, what's with the huge mouth in the stomach?

It is true that condensing a huge series of Mangas into a film is hard, but to then make the film seem really slow and boring. That's quite an achievement!

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust promised so much more than it delivered. The animation and sound is beautiful, the storyline seems interesting and the characters though sometimes a bit shallow show promise (and has one of my favourite voice actors John Dimaggio playing several roles). Yet at the end of the movie I wasn't that satisfied. I guess it comes down to, that enigmatic factor that's hard to put a finger on. The story probably need more beef and characterisation. Still, it's one of the better animes out there.
