This is your typical mindless superpower action flick. A guy who's good at fighting encounters a mysterious girl one day. One thing leads to another, he discovers his inner superpowers, and ends up trying to protect this girl from the armies of bad guys who are after her for their own evil
purposes. Sounds pretty generic right? There can't possibly be much oringinality in this show, right? RIGHT? Well, you'd be right. There really isn't anything special going on here.

The animation and action was bog standard, with everyone's superpower involving some elemental power. Nothing that's not been seen lots of times before. The story line is fairly predictable and I have a feeling the ending was really bad, even though I can't remember exactly what happened, such was the impression "Tokyo Underground" made on me.

The character department represents both the best and the worst that this anime has to offer. The main character is kinda different from what you would expect of a hero in these kind of anime - this one is actually an accomplished fighter from the start, instead of one of those wimps with huge potential that you normally get. The wimp character does actually exist in this anime - it's the hero's sidekick, a character who survives more on luck than anything else, the comic relief guy basically. He does surprisingly well at this and I quite liked him. His constant attempts to try and get his name remembered by another character is probably the most amusing thing in this rather dull anime.

On the other hand, there are some really contrived character interactions going on. There was one such scene early on that set my expectation bar for this series at the low end of the scale. Two characters both got badly hurt trying to protect a third character. And for some reason, the character they were protecting got all distressed over the hero - who she barely
knew at that point - and did not seem to concerned about the other badly injured character... who happens to be a close friend of hers. It was a case of gross negligence in character development that was the side product of trying too hard to induce chemistry between the hero and the girl he was protecting. So of course, the result of this some very unconvincing character interactions.

All in all, this isn't terribly bad, and there were some entertaining moments, though nothing to get excited about. Ultimately, a forgettable experience that's difficult to recommend due to its total lack of notable aspects and originality - why would you watch this when there are plenty of similar but superior shows out there does a far better job in every way?

Tokyo Underground is a 26 episode action adventure anime, which manages to stand out in a bad kind of way.

The graphics and animation in Tokyo Underground are pretty standard for its time. The character designs are modern and the animation smooth. Scenes are not excessively repeated, and errors in animation is rare. The very occasional exaggeration is interesting to watch, and computer generated animation is present, although very scarce. Tokyo Underground does not present any breakthroughs for its graphics and animation, but it does remain competitive.

The soundtrack in Tokyo Underground, although fine most of the time, does occasionally feel off pace. In some scenes, the background music is cut too early, while in other scenes it continues on despite an entire change in the mood. The pace of the voice acting is also a bit off, but the main cause for that would be the storyline rather than the voice actors. The theme tunes of Tokyo Underground are the tunes suitable for an action adventure anime, but feel strangely out of place for this anime. Overall, the audio in Tokyo Underground is unimpressive. This is further let down by its storyline, making the anime sound much worse than it should.

The storyline is where Tokyo Underground truly fails at. For an action adventure anime, Tokyo Underground lacks excitement. Its battles are filled with boring dialogue, and its pace is slow. There are a few episodes which contain some decent amounts of humour, and the overall setting of the anime is interesting, but those factors fail to redeem the unsuccessful storyline. Most of the interesting questions raised at the beginning of the anime would have already been forgotten by the time they are answered, and an overly abrupt ending does not help either.

The character development in Tokyo Underground is also a failure, as most of it happens in the final few episodes, when most viewers would have lost interest in the characters. For the viewers who have not lost interest, the actual development only covers a small fraction of the cast. And, for the fraction that is covered, the actual development is carried out in a poor way, raising more questions than it would answer most of the time. Still, Tokyo Underground does introduce a number of very interesting characters. It is just a shame that they are not developed to anywhere near their full potential.

Nevertheless, Tokyo Underground is a decent anime for viewers who don't care too much about action, storyline, and character development. It has nice animation, decent soundtrack and voice acting, and an interesting cast. Younger viewers will most likely enjoy Tokyo Underground due to its cast and setting. But, for anyone after an anime that will stay in their memories for more than ten seconds, look elsewhere.

Tokyo Underground is pulp, but it's the good kind of pulp.
Definitly a good watch if you don't mind a cliché'd plot, somewhat predictable characters and battles essentially boiling down to generic-energy-beam strength contests.
Though the characters are a bit predictable, they're at least quite likeable. Although the battles devolve to DBZ-style "Oh no, he's too strong!"-fare, at least the actual powers are imaginative (yay, sulphuric acid!). The series' strong point though is the environments; the underground gives off a nice sense of claustrophobia and wonder.
Like I said, a good watch if you don't mind a series being a bit... well, average.
That said, if you liked this, you'll probably like Getbackers better.

I really enjoyed this anime ^__^
I felt like I was watching Kenshin in a Legend of Zelda game *lol*
The humour had me laughing out loud, the action was entertaining, the bad guys had just that right amount of irritation factor and with the added bonus of some cute characters and beautiful ED theme made this a very worthwhile watch.

Typical lame hero, lame heroine, crappy game-like fight scenes (and a lot of it), cheesy dialogues/monologues, and an incredibly predictable story that could've been done in half its length... This anime has a lot going against it, but to be honest this anime isn't as bad as it should be and that is due to the chemistry between the personalities of the characters that make this anime somewhat enjoyable. Chealsea and Rumina's personalities are perfect combination for enjoyable watch. Also rather than main characters side characters really made the cut. Sui was a great character I thought, as well as the "Thunder Girl." Though side character really add lot of rather believable emotion in this anime that rescues this anime from complete crash.

But all and it all this is not the most exciting watch. 3/4th of this anime is literally spent on people running and fighting and yelling. I mean I would really like some meaningful chracter development especially one Kasshin and Seki for that matter cuz they had lot of potential to be truly interesting. If the action scenes were something like samurai champloo or gungrave I would forgive them. But no. Action scenes suck and lacks realism. They are getting slashed by blade of water and real blades and getting beat all over the place but not a drop of blood comes out. I mean I'm not searching for some bloodbath but some realism would've helped. and beside little blood is only PG13 anyways.

Another things was how the powers worked. I mean control gravity? It just looked like cheasea was throwing bombs. Magnetism doesn't mean you are magneto. it somehow gotta make some sense. Powers are just plain out dumb and not thought out.

Lame anime. Althought side characters and funny combination of personali makes this anime tolerable it is nothing special. I would pass this anime for much better action animes like gungrave, samurai champloo, trigun, or even Kenshin (but not dragon ball).

I really felt like someone was throwing breaks at my head the whole time I was watching. This really is just kick-ass till you drop type of show that's not done very well.

This is a very derivative and hackneyed series, but for a "power up and rescue the princess" show, it just does everything right. The comedy is funny and the fighting is done very well. The animation is a little dated but the incorporation of 3-d effects still looks kinda cool. The sound is done well, and I really like the openings and the ending. The story, again, is predictable and highly derivative and starts to fall apart at the end, but it's still far above average. The CHARACTERS are what make the show though. The interplay of the characters' strengths and weaknesses is done amazingly well. Overall, it's a bit of an empty experience, as neither the characters nor the viewer learn anything so its rewatchability isn't that high. Despite all of its faults, I really liked this show, and I recommend it, especially to people that are new to anime.

I watched this awhile ago, when I enjoyed anime of this type when I had a less sophisticated mindset. It really is quite dimension-less (not very much in terms of character development and character uniqueness) so I probably wouldn't want to watch it much now but i remember I really enjoyed it when i was younger and didn't care much about depth.

it is an enjoyable series with quite an interesting journey. i love their powers (gravity, whoo), and the world of Tokyo Underground is quite an interesting one to take a look at. i love the action scenes, and although it might get kind of repetitive towards the end , like most other fighting-oriented anime, this one does is kind of forgivable because of the nice effects.

I would recommend this anime to people who aren't really acquainted with the anime world.

It isn't too sophisticated but it has quite nice animation, decent characters, very memorable scenery, and a quasi-interesting story line. A real beginner's anime that can appease to many's tastes as long as you aren't too picky.

Tokyo Underground is one of the anime who start off with a kick off. We quickly se what it will be about, when ont the ground Rumina Asagi kicks ass, and below, Chelsea Rorec does the same. They do it with a style (although seeing HOW they do it I had no doubt who should I bet on if those two were to fight against each other, since Chelsea has the superpowers and poor Rumina has... boken ;P).

While I had longed to see some good action anime I was of course at once hooked up on that one. Poor me. Never did I suspected that... But wait! There will be time for my deepest sorrow over wasted time, right now let's do it slowly and gently, like TU does it with You poor unsuspectful viewer... Because it slowly leads You down to the place when disappointment is too kind of a word to use it.

While I enjoyed it very high at first (8 even) after school episode and capture episode I noticed some letdown, and from there it was straight down. It hasfew motives which are good/great/nice, and that would be it. Also the main lead was for me paired up wrongly... Chelsea and Rumina were much more fitting to each other, more about it in More section.
Enjoyment after taking all pro and cons into account is 4. While it can be a good series for people who never saw action anime, or saw just a few, for people who seen MANY of them it is not so.
Shall we continue?

Tokyo Underground, I know I had herd the name before when I first started watching it but I couldn't remember where, never did tell but TU was really suprising.

Its the classic, Hero out to save the girl (even the hero calls himself a hero at serveral points XD) This isn't a unique anime at all, its basicly like the older storys, Guy out to save the world with new found super powers. That doesn't at all mean its bad, in fact I think its quite good, although no where unique it provides a very good and old school story feel to it and its very enjoyable.

The animation and music are nothing to brag about but its still above adverage the second OP what really suprised me, the animation in that as well as the music is really good, if the animation would have been like that thoughout the series it would have been a lot better. The characters have already been used, The hero out to save the girl, the girl who needs to be saved, the protector of the girl, and the sidekick who really doesn't do anything, mix in a few traitors to the bad guys, a really funny kid with yo-yos and you have the characters of TU. Although none are unique its a good feel of the old school storys and very refreshing to see an anime go back to the old school again. I greatly enjoyed it and I hope you check it out that you will to.

The only part I had a problem with in this anime is that like so many storys like this, the hero and the heroine never develop a relationship although its ovious they love each other, thats one thing that just bugs me in story's like this, athough doesn't at all ruin the anime just my little rant of the show.

Da sound and animation is good, but the rest could have improvements. Overall, the ideas of this anime were good and this could have been an awesome anime. However, the series was just way too short to have a proper character development (e.g. the main character goes from the weakest charcter to the stronger character in the period of like 3 weeks or something). The charcters are all pretty much one dimensional with set stereotypes. The ending was just too sudden that it was basically like one of those stupid kiddy short stories that ends with- and he woke up from his dream. Is good anime to watch of u're into animation and fighting, but otherwise, u wouldn't be missing out much if u dun watch dis.

For some reason, people like this title. I couldn't stomach it, though. The characters were too cliche'd and way too annoying, the fight scenes were a bit too rote, and the performances occasionally seemed to be phoned in. The overall atmosphere seemed too claustrophobic. The ending was extremely unrealistic, and it undermined the entire premise of the storyline throughout the series. Okay to watch this if you're desperate, but other than that, best left alone.

have some time to spare? then watch Tokyo Underground. by no means will you miss anything if you don't watch it, but you feel as if you wasted your time upon its conclusion.

to put it simply, Tokyo Underground takes a bunch of stereotypes and familiar stories, mixes them up a little bit with a few minor changes, and serve it up on a big flashy platter for people to enjoy. and that's about it.
it really is very typical fare, you've got your main character whos the usual agressive, cocky-but-likable guy who can't stand to see women belittled, but if doesn't object too much to any form of intimacy. together with his clumsy misunderstood geeky friend, they vow to protect a defenceless princess who's being hunted for her secret powers, and ultimately, is required to be sacrificed so the bad guys can do whatever it is they do. which they try to justify by having it all take place in this underground (ahem) society hidden from the world. and finally theres the other female lead, who hides the fact thats she's just as fragile herself, by putting herself in constant danger whilst also attempting to protect the princess who she's become very attached to.
oh and everyone has innate environmental style powers to aid them in their course. those without this apparent genetic gift, manage to make due with customised weapons that come along the way.

artwork is generally very vivid, and the battles are quite fun to watch, and often even border on psychic powers rather than the said elements of nature angle. scenarios are also protrayed quite well, they draw most of the characters fairly vividly despite their drabber surroundings. i guess it provides some contrast in the general sense, considering their under the earth and all.
nothing too outstanding about the soundtrack in the show, OP and ED can get campy, but they're catchy and wont dent your collection to much to have them seperately.

so as you can see, quite straightforward, and as uninspired as it may seem, you shouldnt feel too troubled sitting through each episode. in fact, despite the rushed and very unflattering ending, i still enjoyed it.

good for some lighthearted entertainment. watch if you've time to spare and would rather waste brain power on more demanding issues.

Im not gonna say its the best anime to watch. The ending wasnt that great cause they did it so suddenly. They try to make a love story out of this but they just did a really crappy job here. And I also dont like how they define the hero. Its a typical hero and villian theme where the hero defeats the bad guys and saves the helpless princess in the end.

The good thing i can say about this anime is that some parts of the anime was pretty funny and they leave you in suspense in almost every episode so you just have to keep watching until the end.

I liked this series - It had interesting characters, a nice plot and pretty good action sequences... Its kinda strange though - while I enjoyed every part of it, bar maybe the rushed ending, I didn't care it ended so much... Let me explain. When I finished watching LastEXILE (a very good series) I was really upset... I wanted more, a second session, something like that. With Tokyo Undergroud, however, it was just a 'ok its ended. What shall I get now?'

All in all, a good anime to watch, with good characters, storyline, music etc, but not something that will ever be 'big'

For the first little bit of this series, I was hooked. It had a pretty interesting story, plenty of action and interesting characters. However, as I continued watching my initial feelings wore off. It never gets really bad, but it never became anything more than a very average action show. This really disappointed me because I felt they had a great premise and did just about nothing with it. It's not all bad because it had enough to keep me watching, but it just goes to show you how easily entertained I am :-P.

This anime is ok overall. However, the storyline is not as unique as you think as you watch more and more of it. Some of the parts wasn't explained very well too. The char development still can be improved. However, you still can enjoy the action the anime provided and sometimes it can be funny. The ops and the ed are very nice imo.

I watched this anime a long time ago, so excuse me if I get a little messed up. This series is an enjoyable but forgettable watch. I'm always a sucker for underdogs and that's what Rumina Asagi is. Everytime he wins a fight using superpowers which humans on earth are not supposed to fight, I feel like saying "take that!haha!". The fight scenes are quite interesting because the Supei and Asagi manipulate the earth elements. The animation is not one of the best, but it's still watchable anyway. To me, it was just slightly above average.
