It`s hard to be any kind of objective when reviewing Yokohama shopping diary. There`s no central plot. Even the subplots are disjointed, focused more on mood than story. There is also only 1 serious character to speak of, so more than in any other anime, your enjoyment of Yokohama shopping diary will have to depend on whether the moods and themes strike you.

The 2 episode OVA is presented not so much like a slice of life, but more like a memoir or diary. Its narration is imposing, explaining all the emotions and details of Alpha, the main character. Watching Yokohama Shopping Diary feels like you`re reading her innermost thoughts.

Shopping Diary is an oddly arranged set of mini-stories that focus on different experiences in Alpha`s life. It`s basically a collection of stories that don`t stretch beyond the simple routines of everyday life, but were for one reason or another impactful to Alpha. From experiences like completely wasting away a day, making new acquaintances, and simply appreciating scenery, these stories highlight such intricate yet mundane emotions that everyone has experienced with a level of focus that no other anime has done before.

The one thing that all the little story segments have in common is loneliness. Throughout most of the OVA, Alpha will be alone, reflecting on her thoughts and emotions as a lonely person might. She also becomes hypersensitive to nostalgia, words of affection, and scenic beauty as a lonely person might. The loneliness expressed in Shopping Diary is not a depressing, hopeless kind that`s often present in Makoto Shinkai`s work. The whole anime is surrounded by melancholy. Alpha sees an unspeakably beautiful world, and she`s often moved to tears by it, but the viewer constantly gets the sense that there`s something missing.

This shopping diary is best enjoyed when you are feeling a little lonely. If Alpha`s forceful narration fails to hit you emotionally, then Yokohama Shopping Diary has nothing else left. The stories are disjointed and not inherently dramatic. Alpha is the only character that gets a decent amount of focus, and the animation isn`t especially gorgeous either. If you`re familiar with the melancholy loneliness that surrounds Alpha and you`re a patient viewer, there really is nothing like Yokohama Shopping Diary. I find it difficult to recommend this OVA to most people though.

The manga YKK was one of the best and most original I've read. That is why I didnt felt compelled to watch the 4 OVAs. But now I dont regret having done so, because the OVAs (the 1998 one especially) capture the manga's atmosphere perfectly. I found the end of the second episode one of the most touching anime moments. Unfortunately the first episode was lacking, or probably it had to do with the fact that viewers who have read the manga need some time to get used to the TV pace.

I didnt expect that they could have adapted the manga moments that well. The anime is a must watch for the manga readers too. If you havent read the manga and didnt like the anime (but like reading mangas), I'd suggest reading the manga first. Or else you'll find the anime too experimental and vague. There's a deep background story behind an anime or manga were supposedly nothing happens.

One of the good anime titles. Though definitely not for newbies.

You know those rocks that look completely ordinary on the outside, but when you break them open they reveal whole colonies of shining gems that are strikingly beautful? I think they're called geodes. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is an anime geode. It doesn't have sparkly production or eyecatching animation, but when you dig deep and get aquainted with the whole, it absolutely excels. YKK is the gentlest, most humble, most magical anime (and manga) I've ever witnessed. It carries itself with grace and thought, and the world and backstory buried in this series is inredibly deep. If you enjoy the anime, I HIGHLY recommend you read the manga, which is available scanlated online. Just google it, it'll come right up.

Some of the anime titles that tries to make a good storyline, seemed to lack some serenity when making these "end of the world" visualized concept. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, however, did accomplished that. A story with absolutely no destruction, over-redundant violence, or containing all of the bells and whistles that were not at all part of that image. Just a life of a young girl who explores her own world, and with the sense of bewilderment and captivating the view with her unusual camera. The songs during the middle of the segment were quite catchy, and the animation was good on the environment it had made that realism sensible. The main character was this robot girl named Alpha; even though I don’t feel that she is one, that goes through her life of taking care of her own cafe while the owner wasn‘t seemed to be there. As it is given not much of engaging concept, the modeled depiction that sparks over a calm setting does seem to have that more or less difference of its own aim. I didn't think that it would be this decent though, as this story was giving me some impressions of how it portrayed only a couple of characters and had a given chance of making it something more into their overall appeal.

Slowest anime of all time. It would just slow-motion the scenary and let you stare at it for about 1-3 min. then talk a couple line then stare somemore. Only about 2 thing happen in 2 ep. First she got a camara, then she got hit by a lighting. Lighting part was interesting... but it was so boring when they show her slow-mo making coffee that would took atleast 6 hour to complete.

Slow pace, boring, but somehow it feel alright. It's like you sitting in car watching a beautiful scanary a long as you passed.

When I first watch this OVA, I'm a bit confused since there are 1998 and 2002 OVA, I thought the later was a remake of this one, but then again I was wrong since the 2002 OVA is more like a sequel to the first OVA, both consist of 2 ep each.

now for the review, I must say this one is almost plotless, more like azumanga daioh but that doesn't make it a bad movie, in fact it's done with very good, the scenery and background are superb, the style more like "to heart".
while the story progress quite slow, it's also add more to the "loneliness" feel to the main character which is a robot who waits the arrival of its owner.
This OVA is strongly recommended, especially for an easy watch, enjoyable and also a bit touching movie.

First of all I wish to discuss my ratings and why I put the numbers than I did. Not that many will read this. Even before I go into teh numbers something must be explained about this series, whether it makes you like it more or not.

This anime was not made for the purpose of showing you YKK in its entirety. It was a tribute to the manga, it covered chapters the creator and the producers felt were eitehr popular or releveant , or just would all around be enriched by being animated.
- This anime was a tribute to the Fans of the YKK Manga -

This series could not be condensed into the 4 existing OVAs nor could it translate well at all if it were, as they would have to convey over 12 years of material as such. Just read the manga, 121 chapters are already translated into english and are readily available in multiple downloading formats. ykk.misago.org

Anyway , I gave 9s to animation and sound since I know that somewhere there is something better, it'd be rude to simply call something the best.

The story, character development, and value all get 10s taking into account the knowlege of the manga and how the anime corelates to it, and 9 for enjoyment since it seemed appropriate.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is quite a revelatory series for how it treats...well, everything. The outlook with which it deals with the world is genuinely good-hearted and without a speck of facetiousness. This two-episode OVA takes place in what the plot summary deemed a 'post-apocalyptic world', seemingly immersed in water, and all I have to say is 'some post-apocalypse'. The handful of people you see in YKK live their lives as if nothing ever happened. No one grieves as if having lost anything; it appears that no one has sustained any casualties. The serenity of this flooded world is almost stifling. With this tone established, the anime proves that it can illustrate earth-shaking change without becoming mired in its own misery and tragedy, something I personally have only seen once before in Big O -- and on a much less effective scale.

And it really works, too. The very mood of this piece is what makes it worth the viewing. I haven't watched something so liberated -- or liberating, for that matter -- in a great deal of time. YKK is strangely free from the chains of trying far too hard to entertain; it knows what it can do without such pretension.

Besides the delightfully sunny tone of the anime, the one other strange thing about everything is a distinct lack of segregation between the humans and the robots. Alpha's only neighbor in the vicinity, a friendly old man, treats her as he would a daughter. Perhaps he's a robot too; perhaps everyone in this anime is. Then again, in the second episode we deal with a doctor who comments on the lack of robot patients in her hospital, suggesting that Alpha is one of just a few. And for that reason it's fairly strange how well she gels with the rest of her human compatriots. Not that discrimination would have any sort of hand in something as idyllic as this...

And that's what Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is really about. Idyllia. Catharsis. It's a mood piece, plain and simple, and plays its cards perfectly; nothing will relax you quite like this. However, for all its good intentions, the OVA is certainly not perfect. The animation and sound, though functional, are showing their age awfully quickly. I was a little surprised, personally, that this was a 1998 production and not 1991. That aside, the anime's lack of real driving conflict or any sort of point may leave one wondering 'what did I just spend an hour watching?' I'm glad that I spent that hour, however. It filled my brain with something pleasant right before I slept, and kept my mood up. This little series is just the remedy for a crappy day or a stressful situation.

Well, this basically is like a fish tank. Don't get me wrong. I don't mean that it's a wet animal prison but rather that is has similar calming effects on the observer.
It takes place in a possible future (I think?) where the sea level has risen, submerging Yokohama. Perhaps because of the greenhouse effect. It shows a wonderful place of beautiful scenery and some nice, relaxed people.
I wonder if this is some sort of apocalypse propaganda: "Don't worry, it will all be better after the apocalypse. The greenhouse effect is just an exaggeration." ;->.
If you'd like something nice and calming to watch that doesn't include a plot that causes brain aneurysms, give it a try.

Yokohama Shopping Log is different on the fact that it's soothing and calm, that what differentiates it from others. But then with calm, non-action packed things it can be quite boring and tedious. Nothing else to say, there wasn't much character development and not much of a story either. Who thought 2 OVA's would be so boring? Definately filler material in my case that is.

One letter explains all: zzzzzzz

Well I personally enjoyed this anime, but it takes a certain kind of mind set to love it. It's a very relaxed peaceful happy anime and purposely made to progress along slow. I'm sure it was made as an addition to the manga more than a stand alone OVA, thus explaining a lack of background on anything. But like I said, I loved it,partially because it reminds me of where I was born and grew up, but mainly because it's an anime that's different and paces itself.

"Less is more" - this anime couldn't have followed this saying more. It's a little like Ico PS2 game turned anime. One of the only anime out there that provides atmosphere rather than trying to tell a interesting and out of ordinary story. This is a masterpiece, the scenery is one of the best I’ve seen in any anime, and often quite emotional.

Lacking story - true, but you didn’t need a story here, you have a unique slice of life instead.

Alpha was such a likeable character, a totally friendly and cute girl, liked by everyone.

I recommend this one anyone that just wants a chilled out anime which provides something very rare indeed

Hm. I watched the 2002 OVA before i watched this one, I have to say I like them both a lot, though more seemed to happen in this one than in the first. It's nice and refreshing to watch an anime that just let's you kick back and enjoy it and watch Alphas world go by. I recommend you watch both of the OVAs. If you like this sort of thing.

I saw the 2nd OVA first and they are much alike (calm and relaxing) except the animation which is better in the 2nd. Gets a 9 for sound because of the 2 beautiful songs. This anime is different from mainstream shows for sure but I still enjoyed it. If you don't like this one, stay away from the other OVA.

This anime has no action, no story, no intrigue. Here ordinary girl or robot (doesn't make any difference) lives ordinary life, which is boring on one hand and full of excitement on the other hand.
It makes no sence to call it
science-fiction or drama (its neither) This is anime about living ordinary life with appreciation of every moment in it like listening to the sound of waves, talking to the neighbour, watching street lights in the evening turning on...
The point of this anime is proboly to make one stop and watch the world around - probobly there is more in it then one think

Despite what the description said, this is really a slice-of-life type of anime. People who didn't like this is the one that watched with a wrong mentality. Don't be looking for any action, plot, or drama in this ova, we are talking about an ova that has 6 minute scene of the main character making ordinarly coffee in an ordinarly way. IMHO, the author and director set out to create a peacful-calmness feeling about life which will likely make you a person with a greater appreciation for the simple things in life. So just sit back and be absorb into the sweet-happy-warm-relaxing world that is being presented, meaning don't watch it where you can get distracted.

In summary, this ova = (Kokoro Library * Ocean Wave * To Heart)^2

Lastly, yes, the coffee scene was a bit boring, but by then the scene was almost over. Everything else was very satisfying.

Eh, I watched the second OAV, the sequel to this and immediately went and watched this one. Well, actually, I think this one may be better than the second one in some ways, but it felt like it lacked something somehow. I couldn't really say what, since both lack any coherent plot...but while the second evoked nostalgia for me, while watching this I got the impression I was watching a painting. A moving, talking painting, to be sure, but I've never been a fan of being forced to appreciate a painting for half an hour, no matter how good.

It's pretty scenery or background, to be sure, but I've always liked to be told a story...to continue with the analogy, still life paintings have always bored me, and while not quite the same, part of me kept wanting something to happen in this anime.

The strongest part of this anime for me was that at times...sometimes they got human life right so well it made me reflect on how unreal most characterization is.

But I don't know whether that makes up for watching someone prepare a cup of coffee for three minutes. If you took your favorite anime, removed the conflict driving the plot, removed all the main characters and stripped out any character evolution, would it still be good? I don't know...

"In the age of evening calm"....

This anime takes on a big concept and does with it what no other series has done before.... A post apocalyptic world where life is not only serene, uncomplicated and peaceful but positively lonely.

Heaven for misanthropes, maybe, but it even attempts to chronicle the overlap in the development of artificial intelligence, from living in the shadow of their human creators to conscious beings seeking out their own reason for existence in an entirely humanistic manner. (No pun intended).

One even gets the impression that humanity is on its way out, to be replaced by its own creations who are more suited to life in this quiet, stark universe.

And it somehow manages to do this over the space of two episodes with absolutely nothing happening of any great consequence. And it isn't all a matter of knowing, from the manga, what the backstory and plot is, as happens with a lot of oavs and tv series based on manga. YKK is the kind of oav where that just doesn't matter. It is a solid two episodes (four with the advent of the second oav series) of chillout material, great to watch over and over again, because there might just be something worth getting out of it that you've missed beforehand....

I don't know what in this anime it was that caught me. It is not that very good, nothing really big happens - well, perhaps that's it. Perhaps it is the calmness of Alpha's life that makes me like this anime, perhaps it is the beautiful surroundings and well animated backgrounds. Or perhaps the fact that I too like coffee?
