| When I was a kid I watched this over and over again just because it's so damn good!
Animation is pretty sharp and clear for something made 1986. Dogs look realistic and the serie is nice to watch. Thought the drawing can't match todays quality.
Sounds in the serie are just killer, I watched the serie last time few years ago and yesterday I heard one song from the soundtrack and it brought up so many memories. They fit to the serie.
Story is catching and pretty original, how the dogs find their way to another dog so they could kill Akakabuto, It's interesting and doesn't get boring, even if it has some flaws. Some character development is also shown (though they are dogs).
I enjoy this anime. It might be old, but for me it's almost a classic for being the first anime I watched.

| Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin is an old series that is nearly enjoying a cult-status nowadays, in Scandinavia at least. It is a traditional "growing up" -story of a young dog, Gin. Lots of fighting, which sadly gets quickly boring, but still quite an interesting series overall - for the anime-historical value alone if not for anything else.
The story starts in a rather good and tragic way, setting revenge as one of the initial motivators for our main characters. The first five or so episodes are very interesting with the few human characters of the series training Gin. The dramatic aspects are played relatively well and the dark and violent mood raises this above most of the other series of the era. The beginning is absolutely the best part of the series.
However, soon the focus of the series is shifted away from the human characters and to the dogs - who suddenly stop being animals and turn into some sort of samurais with concepts of courage, honour and honesty tied into their behaviour, not to mention their high intelligence or feelings of responsibility and parenthood. Hearing the dogs suddenly TALKING and understanding each other when none of them had communicated in any non-animalistic way before was quite dumbfounding. Granted, this is only fiction and fiction has always had loads of intelligent animals. But still, this sudden change somehow cheapens the impact of the early episodes; it wastes the serious believable tone and starts a new, more fantasy-oriented one. Some people might consider this change to be refreshing, but personally I found it annoying.
What's worse, the story gets quickly downhill from there. Dozens of new characters (=dogs) are introduced, but instead of affecting the character-dynamics in any way most of them join in just to become "cool" Über-fighting-machines in the background with no real substance whatsoever - the infamous "ninja-dogs" being the perfect example. The end is so full of clichés it makes one want to laugh and cry at the same time.
And yet, in all the corny and ridiculous glory of the final fight (that spans over several episodes), Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin is somehow emotionally touching. Actually more so than many of its various anime-relatives (among which I can easily count most of the fighting and growing up titles of the past twenty years). Despite all its shortcomings, it is certainly not a bad series - it is just too old and too uninspired. A pity, for the beginning of the series seemed very good.
About the techical aspects of the series - well, time has not been kind to it. Even though the animation was probably above average quality for a TV-series in the middle of eighties, it is seriously outdated by now - repeated scenes and sudden drops in animation-quality are everywhere. The songs are quite good, but the sound-effects are horribly bad by today's standards. The voice-acting is average.

| This is probably the best anime I've ever seen. I first saw it as a child, but at that time it was a Swedish dub, and more than 1/5 of the whole series had been excluded because of the bloody and violent scenes. Now that I've seen the uncut episodes I love this anime even more.

| So this was the very, very first Anime i ever saw in my lifetime. It woke up a new sight in me for japanese animation. Too bad the swedish version was badly cutted and rather poorly dubbed. I was one of those who asked the swedish moviecompany who gave out the series, if they could release all episodes uncuted.
December 5th 2003, my wish came true, now there is a DVD box out there with all 21 uncut epsodes. Great or what? Whatever, see this anime or regret it.

| This is a rather old anime and though it has its charms it does not deserve as high ratings as previous reviewers have given it. I'm sure that most of the people who have reviewed this title are from Sweden (I am as well) and the high ratings comes from nostalgia since it was released in Sweden during the 80's (with poor Swedish dub and with its contents horribly dismembered, I might add).
The animation is ok but not nearly good enough to get a 10. As for the sound, I can only grade the Swedish dub since I, sadly enough, have not seen it in Japanese. The Swedish voice actors are in general very bad and over-acts. The music is quite good though. That's why I have given the sound 3 instead of 1.
In conclusion: Ginga Nagareboshi Gin could be worth seeing if you are into older anime and if you think you can overcome the fact that dogs are the main characters throughout most of it.
I do think that it is a rather entertaining anime and if I get to see the original Japanese version I might enjoy it even more.

| This is one amazing Anime. Not just that it is old and still so great. It spread videly around the world too! It was even dubbed into Swedish. In my opinion the Story is a bit shabby. A bear having mental problems and a dog making a whole army just to kill him. I personally have a lot in these series. I am currently going through it my third time. It is an Anime to watch many times.
