I was going to give the series an 8 but the last episode screwed things a little.
But this is simply the best anime I've seen involving Gonzo. And the weird thing is that it IS based on a manga and a very old and good one too. So what went wrong with Gonzo and they butchered all the mangas like Hellsing, Chrno Crusade, Black Cat -Gantz doesnt count since the manga is crap anyway- afterwards?
Though I imagine that the anime's ending doesnt reflect the manga's this time it doesnt matter since there are only 4 episodes so they cant have many alternatives with the story.
What makes this OVA worth watching are the underwater scenes, making this anime unique. Forget all the older submarine titles even if they're superior in story and characters. This beats them all by depicting the sea in exquisite detail since only with 3D is such a feat possible. If 3D is used where it needs to be and 2D too, then I dont mind watching them. Only when the whole things get 3D do I turn away. In titles like Last Exile there are exciting dog fights but here there are plenty of amazing sea dog fights with torpedoes and special underwater machine guns. Instead of huge space motherships there are some kind of whales infused with submarines making them unique. So in the graphics department it is of the best titles. havent seen Yukikaze yet but for the sea fights Blue Submarine has the best animation.
Now in the story and characters the typical Gonzo mediocrity, especially in the last chapter, though thanks to the short length it doesnt get annoying as in their other manga adaptations. The only character I liked was Mutio and her co-species, mainly because they didnt talk but just shrilled. Her first encounter with Hayami is also a memorable scene.I liked the main character a little too, while the rest were forgetable as it happens in many OVAs.
Combining Jazz music with underwater action worked well too and made those sequences unique. The ED theme was good, especially with the ending animation in the second episode.
Overall an enjoyable watch if good animation and action are a priority. But for everything else I wouldnt recommend this overall good production. A must watch for Gonzo fans

| When I saw his anime a couple of years ago, I was quite impressed by the quality of the animation and by the story, that I remembered very interesting. Now I bought the dvd and my feelings are a little changed. The animation, dated 1998, are good, but not the best I have ever seen (This OVA, probably was a "training" for GONZO`s use of Computer Graphics). Music is in the average: it does its work properly. Sound effects are very good. The story is worse than I remembered. I felt like this OVA finished too early. When the story become more interesting, it finishes. I think they could work more on the caracters personal stories and on their reasons, on the feelings between Kino and Ayami. Finally, my opinion: it`s a good anime, with a lot of action, but could be better. Good, but not the best ever seen.

| I have seen both the subbed and dubbed version of this, but this review applies to the subbed version.
Blue Sub is an interesting anime...it really is. I loved the plot line and general atmosphere of it, and the great cgi work and integration with cell animation added a nice touch!! I thought the voice actors could have been a little better, and the character development lacked, but overall, a decent, enjoyable anime.

| The biggest complaint I have with this show is the music. It feels out of place to me and interupted my immersion in the show on a number of occasions. It's too bad because the show has some big potential. As most Gonzo shows, the animation is ahead of it's time, though some of the CG can be distracting. The story is quite interesting as well, it has a neat Island of Dr. Moraeu meets Waterworld twist going for it, but in a good way. Ultimately, the music and the depth of the characters don't really push the envelope. It's worth renting though.

| Overall Blue Sub. 6 was a great piece to showcase Gonzo's new appearance and mesh of traditional 2D and 3D artforms. Interesting story elements, characters, and themes keep BS6 held high while somewhat ackward pacing, music, and a sense of lack of fulfillment hold this title back from being exceptional.

| I am shocked! Shocked that Blue Submarine No. 6 got such low scores! Though many low scoring reviews were one-liners, I'm surprised that more people weren't blown away by this anime. I saw it in 1999, and I was amazed at the unique blend between 2D and 3D animation. I also loved the post apocalyptic, environmental, end of humanity theme the story had. An excellent anime in my book.

| This title has good animation, not the best there is, but still. I really liked the colours (the blues, the ocean, it was amazing).
Liked most of the characters, althought the relationship (or whatever) between the lead guy and ocean girl was a little 'Ã la Little Mermaid' (without, obviously the romance part). The plot was interesting, not entirely original (I seem to recognize some things from "The Isle of Dr Moreau", but maybe that's just me... :p), but nice nevertheless.
Music? Didn't really noticed it, so maybe it was nothing special... The voices were ok...:)
Overall, Blue Submarine is worth watching, but I'm not sure if it's worth buying.

| Rather a mediocre anime. The animation is all right. The CG is for the most part cool but the hand drawn characters are pretty plain looking and often look strange on the CG backgrounds because of the slightly off coloring job used on the drawings. The sound is average, there are some good songs but the voices of the mutants in the dub are hard to understand, so sound is a mixed bag. The story is well below average, not really captivating and is often times uninteresting. There are also a lot of battles that are hard to care about. Despite some ridicules mutants the characters are decent. There are a lot of “Last Exile� archetypes, which is cool, the fact that this was practice for Last Exile is actually the best thing about this anime. There are many scenes where you can see a LE resemblance—it’s interesting to see how much Gonzo has improved in the last few years.

| A good series that could have been so much better. Its animation is nicely done with both its CG and cells mixing well to really bring out the effects the producer wishes to present.
Maybe what I feel most disappointed about the anime is its length. Although it presents an interesting story its 4 episodes OVA really makes things feel rushed, as Denscafon mentioned unless your a veteran chances are you will not understand what its trying to tell you.
Overall a good show that could have done better if it has more length to help develop its story.

| For something made in 1998, the animation is/was quite stunning, one of the first of its kind to blend cgi with animation, and did a pretty good job i thought.
For me.. the story was ok.. it wasn't horrible, but i guess did its job.
The characters were ok for a 4 ep ova, so that was ok, except that the girl for some reason cares sooo much for the guy even though they've only just met pretty much.
overall a pretty good anime, it may be a bit much for those that haven't watched alot of other animes cuz this one is kinda weird, but good for veterans :)

| I really liked this show, but I just wish they could have made it longer. Even though the story paced itself pretty well over the 4 episodes, it just kinda left me wanting more. The mix of CG and drawn animation was a nice touch. Made for a nice feel. The story was a bit far fetched, but enjoyable none-the-less. My only real gripe is the fact that they charge $20+ per DVD and there is only 1 episode per disk.... very bad!

| A good attempt but not an interesting story. This anime is a cross between Island of Dr. Moreau and an apocalyptic waterworld. The music tries to follow Cowboy Bebop but ends up being completely inappropriate for the tense action scenes. The characters are fairly hackneyed (cute idealistic girl with tough brooding rebel). The ending is a smattering of pseudo-philosophical nonsense that provides a poor resolution to the mysterious buildup in the first episodes.
However, if you get the chance to track down the original Murata design sketches, some of them are really great, harking back to a Fallout-esque 1950s megatechnology.
The animation was decent, but the old-style did not blend well with the new CGI. Also, the CGI is aging badly already, and will look silly in a few years time.
Overall a decent underwater adventure that falls flat at the end.

| Blue Submarine 6 is a well done anime with some pros and some more contras:
The animations are partly really excellent (CGA). The story is not a big thing and a little bit too simple, but ok for a 4 ep series.
What I don't like is the music and the character design. The music is most of the time annoying and some character designs (like the sharks) are really bad and don't fit into the Anime while other races are well done (e.g. the whale like creatures).

| A series about an arrogant megalomaniac who feels the need to "punish" humanity for all its perceived wrongs by creating a situation in which it goes to war with creatures he creates, then holds everyone (including his creations) hostage to total annhialation to stop the war, despite the fact that it was his creations who started the war in the first place, using his philosophies and statements as an excuse (even playing them as they butcher human civilians).
And we're somehow supposed to find his stand "honourable"? His beliefs "valid"? One doesn't entertain the thoughts of a turd, especially one who openly condones mass slaughter just to prove a point.
Oh, Blue Sub 6...? Well....

| Die Mutter aller CG-Animes! Für damalige Verhältnisse revolutionär und bei ihrem ersten Versuch hat GONZO schon hier gezeigt was animationstechnisch in ihnen steckt. Zwar wirken die CG-Anis im Vergleich mit anderen CG-animierten Animes von heute veraltert und unausgreift, aber trotzdem beeindruckend. Der Anime an sich bietet sehr viel Action und eine Story die leicht über dem Durchschnitt liegt. Unterhaltsam fand ichs allemal.

| This anime took my breath away with the first scene and kept me breathless through all the episodes. It is very well computer-animated mixed with beautiful 2D animations in a perfect harmony.
The story is deep and very well written and amazingly preformed. If you have not yet seen this anime I think you should. It is something uneque and is the first of its kind in anime - and from what I know, the only one of its kind.

| Blue Sub was a decent anime to watch. It will mainly be remembered for the 2D/3D look which people have either loved it or hated it. While the 2D animation and 3D animation doesn't always blend well, the designs in both mediums are very interesting to look at. The music was alright but I give higher marks for the sound effects and voice acting.
The story is pretty good but I felt that it could have been better if the series was a little longer. There were certain areas that needed more development. The beginning starts off good but the resolution at the end is not entirely satifiying mainly because of the encounter with the Zorndyke character who isn't a well developed character. I was hoping for a more dramatic performance from him considering he is responsible for making the earth into a water world.

| Blue Sub 6 was one of the first shows to mix CG with hand drawn work decently, which is quite impressive considering the show is fairly old. Needless to say, the animation/CG blend is quite good. I don't recall the sound sticking out in my head much at all, nor were the characters all that great either, other than the psychotic/apathetic doctor. The story is unique and good, yet quite weird in a Princess Mononoke kind of way, but not done as well. There is a constant undertone about humanity and society, as well, and this series is not really a no brainer, some thinking or rather reflecting is required. However, it is certainly worth your time to sit down and watch this short OVA series.

| This series is very well done. The story flows very well and for more than 2 hours, you will be entertained as the story develop. Also, this movie carry a message. With each side hating each others so much, how can we end a conflict? Definitely a great series for family viewing.

| Blue Submarine No.6 is one of those animes that tries to get you to think a little. The story unfolds perfectly and is well paced considering the OVA is only 4 episodes long. The racial tension (inter-species replaces racial in this anime, but the intended message comes through clearly enough) is very well portrayed.
