| The first thing I noticed about this film is its ethereal title. The second thing I noticed was its idiotic criticism: “It’s a Ghibli wanna-be; hence, it’s a bad movie.” Ninety-nine percent of anime comparisons are incorrect; in 97 minutes there are only two similarities this movie shares with any given Ghibli work. For one, the relationship between Amon and Maria played out like your typical Ghibli film. Secondly, the mood: All but three Ghibli films have put me to sleep and this is because, at the loss of entertainment, the studio prefers to tell its stories with a tranquil (or boring, depending on your lens) simplicity. The Boy Who Saw the Wind is very much like this. It tiptoes towards the Land of Yawn, but doesn’t quite reach it. Other than those two aspects, however, this film is about as different from Ghibli as an elephant and its peanuts.
The film has an excellent opening; there’s a car chase and a family is running desperately from someone or something. Viewers quickly realize that young Amon is not your ordinary boy. (“Promise to never show your light play to anyone.”) However, it goes downhill from there. For starters, the war isn't very interesting and, unfortunately, it's used as a foundation for the plot. The legend of the Wind Folk is much more interesting, but the film decides to tell two major stories at once....in a very haphazard way. Furthermore, seemingly unrelated things happen at the snap of a finger. For example, the whole incident with Lucia, the Minister of Science, is out of place. In the end, five seconds is devoted to something major and it was completely inconsequential to the rest of the film. Last but not least, the movie's villain changes his tune in a matter of seconds. This film has a great story, but it doesn't tell it well. However, I ended up enjoying it anyway. I can only imagine that its potential was greater than its many flaws.

| To me this movie was boring. It didn't surprise me almost at all and it really looked too much like a Ghibli studios creation. Wich it isn't right?
I thought this would've been a good movie because of it's beautiful name, but I was quite dissapointed after I'd watched it. I have to say that I don't like movies that are about war, but I liked Kaze no Tani no Naushikaa. It also has something to do with war, so that proves it's not only too much blasting and shooting that's wrong whith Kaze wo Mita Shounen. I think it's a pity that the main plot went more to the war side instead of telling more about the world where they were living and more about Amon and Maria.
This movie would've been so much better if the story would've had more something special and surprising so that it could be watched again.

| I found this to be very stilted, sometimes good, sometimes very mediocure, the story kinda jumped around, and the pacing was off.
The plot itself was ok, but there wasn't nearly enough exposition, or transition between scenes. Things just went pop, there it is.
The main character very grew any real character, he just was the cool main kid. all the supporting character were even less developed.
I felt like quite a few parts knocked off various Miyazaki movies, though, I understand the source material predated Ghibli, and may have had quite an effect on Miyazaki himself.
anyway. the movie never comes together, but it was a mostly diverting 95 minutes.
not recomened.

| a nice movie, simply failed to come up with Miyazaki Hayao standarts. But does that mean its not a good movie?
with a blast away start truley the first 30 min where great to watch.
then it all got for my taste a bit to standard or rather predictble. there hasn't been any sudden changes. aswell as a lot of stuff was out of perspective
The animation:
damn year 2000 it doesn't come close to Jin-Roh nor to Princess mononoke (wich was released 3 years before) it comes close to movies 10 / 15 year old. i could see sometimes the "effects" they used (wich on some other occaisions where quite well used indeed) the background were oke. yet far from perfect. i had a weird feeling like if the characters where from time to time beeing drawn by a diffrent drawer :S.
therefor i cannot give it any higher then a 6.
Sound:
DAMN. the boy was voice acted by a girl and i could here it (yeah oke rurouni was voiced acted by a girl aswell but that took me over 40 eps to discover :P). yet the music was excellent still far out of reach from Yuki Kajiura or from some other movies.
the songs and the singing folks town just totally tryng to bright it up FAILED and made me almost cry because of the desperate attempt. yup that was a blow in the face.
Story:
it gave me a rather WW2 feeling wich is good. it had it ups but rather had as many downs as it had ups. i wont spoil anything but the end was quite clear!
also a perfect start (Wich it was, it had everything to make it surpace many movies and series) but just got prateqly blown to small bits and bytes.
also the many attempts to create drama failed most of the time.
Characters:
a wide range of characters wich most failed to do anything. the only character i think is memorable is the young girl from the fisher town. and to know i allready forgot her name!
Value:
it has some blood in it. its well suited for any age i think. even its rather dark story and much dieing.
Enjoyment:
i myself am a big film of WW2 movies as it felt like a WW2 movie i liked it. it had its ups and its down. they had a BIG change and blew it

| The Boy Who Saw the Wind is an anime that desperately aches to be a Miyazaki film. So desperately that it then proceeds to forget the basics.
It starts well, very well in fact, but by the 20 minute mark the ludicracies and (apparently) deliberate oversimplifications start, and from that point onwards it is a steady descent into hell.
Characterisations collapse even faster than the plot, if that is at all possible. Apparently all people are capable of sudden, snap personality changes for no logical reason. It is amazing what you can learn from some films.
If this was based on a novel, then either the novel wasn't very good or the realisation of the film wasn't up to par. Whatever the case, The Boy Who Saw the Wind is a monumental lost opportunity: it could have been so much better....
