| I found the anime not to be as exciting as the original ct mainly for two reasons.
1. Too much focus is put on Tsubasa, which was not like this in the old series.
2. The matches looked as if they were shortened.
My advice, watch the original ct before watching this one.

3 years later, I finally got my hands on the whole series, with the intention of watching it to the end. 34 episodes later, I finally gave up. Captain Tsubasa just didn't have a strong enough storyline to warrant a serious watch. It would have been more interesting to just see the scoreboard, as the soccer games just start getting repetitive.
Unlike animes such as Slam Dunk, Major, Touch and Hajime no Ippo, which boast a strong cast of characters, Captain Tsubasa is full of characters who live, breathe, and eat soccer. Furthermore, the makers felt like they had to prove that Japan can compete on the world stage and beat all their European and S. American counterparts. Instead of a fun and engaging anime based on soccer, we get a soccer anime that's purely soccer and not much else.
Overall, I don't recommend watching this unless you really want to re-visit the old nostalgic feelings of Captain Tsubasa. Perhaps when it was first released, it was better compared to the other manga/anime, but right now, there's way too much good stuff out there to even bother with this.

One of the good sports animes out there. (In terms of pure sports)
However, the audience is totally aimed towards children in terms of attitude and content. There aren't that many interesting side plots where tsubasa's character is developed, just a pure sports anime..
However, sports anime itself is kind of like action anime. In Tsubasa's case this anime is intense, heart wrenching tense, and the games are really really interesting. If you are one of those who love sports anime like those who love action/mecha anime, then this is definitely worth looking. No annnoying characters, no annoying story twists, etc.

| I like it! I like it a lot!! Apparently we used to have the game on our so-called Family Comp,:-p but I don't remember it at all. As an anime, Captain Tsubasa is so cheesy and feel-good that it ends up being quite charming. However, I think it's aimed for a younger crowd that isn't quite so easily bored by childish stuff. It also seems to me that if you don't like football from the start, you might be bored by this title. Give it a try anyway, you never know. The animation isn't half-bad, but I didn't think much of the music. The OP in particular does nothing at all for me, though the ED is a little better. The characters are all really sweet, at least when they're young, since I've only watched 5 episodes so far.
Captain Tsubasa is an extremely predictable series, so it might not be for those who like a lot of suspense in their sports anime. I was tempted to call this a series full of sports anime cliches, but I realise that since it's so old, it's probably one of the main sources of those cliches: going into the often sad story and motivation of every major rival, whether we want to know it or not, and reminding us every five minutes or so just how special our main character it. Yes, we know he's a genius, thank you very much, we heard you the first thirty times. When they call it Captain Tsubasa, they really DO mean that it's all about Tsubasa: Tsubasa this, Tsubasa that. Everybody loves Tsubasa, Tsubasa is a little angel, Tsubasa can do no wrong! After a while it might start to make you rather sick, but it hasn't gotten so bad just yet. I think I like Wakabayashi a little better, though, mostly because Tsubasa is pushed down our throats so much.
Plus I don't remember whose review it was that talked about the field being 30 miles long, but it's totally true! Tsubasa runs for HOURS every episode and dribbles at least 15 opposing team players every time he gets the ball. It can get pretty tedious, though, when they have so many mundane slow motion shots which take forever to complete and are repeated again and again for no good reason at all.
The storyline is pretty straightforward, no dilly-dallying, no mystery, no nothing. From the beginning the audience is informed: this is Tsubasa, and he's going to be a football star, like it or lump it! Fortunately we like it, at least I do. Even though Tsubasa is a little annoying in his goody-goody earnestness and enthusiasm, I don't dislike him cos he's just so cute!! ^_^ It's a pretty good series when all is said and done; definitely check it out if you've got any interest at all in sports anime.

| OK...Critic here is right in the sense that it's all about Tsubasa...and he's also right about tha fact that this is really nothing but a recap so far (I'm currently halfway through episode 7 on HK bootleg DVDs). With that said though, it doesn't mean that those who have watched the old Captain Tsubasa should just ignore this title. The main difference is that the animation is completely re-done and improved over the previous incarnation. People actually look different this time (in the first Tsubasa everyone looked relatively the same =ÃΕΎ ) and the overall quality has been improved.
For those who are new to the series though, this is a sort of fantasy soccer with extremely powerful shots and fantasy moves (like Hyuga's famous tiger shot and another move where twins are propelled forward into the air by being launched into the air by another guy's legs). Overall though, there really isn't much of a story except the story of Tsubasa as he rises to the top, but IMO it is a really entertaining series throughout
