| Blue Gender is from the same guy who did Gasaraki. He also did Armored Troopers VOTOMS, which I haven't seen. Like Gasaraki, the visual style of Blue Gender could be described as "harsh". Deliberately unpretty, dark, drab colours. The hero guy looked kind of weird, but I got used to it.
The action was okay, but felt a bit removed. The alien "core" that you had to shoot to kill the bugs seemed silly after a while. I was amused to see a reviewer complaining that the series cheaped-out by having the mecha run on wheels in their feet - I think it's actually a sensible idea for moving on level surfaces, using less energy and causing less wear-and-tear.
The opening music was awful, but in-episode music was pretty good, when I noticed it - dark low-key techno or somber orchestral, which suited the mood. OST might be worth buying. Acting and sound were okay, not special.
The back-story was interesting, with the hero woken up into a horrific post-apocalyptic world occupied by giant bugs, but I had some problems with the script, which was sometimes cliched or contrived. In a way the story seemed over-extended at 26 episode. They kind of spun it out without adding anything much to the story. The end was the usual mystical hoohah.
I admit I'm a bit torn, because I like to see anime that does something a bit different. But while I found the show interesting in parts, I think the not-good bits ultimately outweigh the good bits. If you had to choose one, I'd say Gasaraki would be the more satisfying viewing experience.

| I originaly saw this anime 4 or so years ago on adult swim. Since that time it has remained my favorite anime. But as much as I love this anime it does have its flaws.
The animation in this series is pretty low budget. The characters and blue are well drawn but what really brings down the animation is the horribly done mechs.
But dispite the bad animation this anime has pulled through as one of the best I have ever seen. All of the remaining aspects in the anime are exellent.

| This anime had the potential to be an amazing anime, but unfortunatly falls short.
The animation wasn't terribly good, especially for an anime made this recently. Re-used fight scenes and awkard looking creatures combine to make the animation sub-par. However, the character models are decent enough, and the animation does seem more fluid in the later episodes.
The sound is nothing special, seemed very generic and un-inspiring for the most part.
The story was very intriguing for the first 10 or so episodes, but then disintegrates into a mesh of political controversy and psychological and scientific conflicts. While it was by no means boring, it also seemed sort of rushed and the ending will have you scratching your head. However, I found the plot satisfactory and it didn't do much to detract from my enjoyment of the series itself.
The characters were all very interesting, though most side characters appear on the show only briefly, they all fulfill their purposes and are each unique and individualistic in their actions. The two main characters, Marlene and Yugi, experience the growth and development to create two very special characters you can really get attached to. It is especially interesting to see the growth in each character occur as their relationship with each other grows simultaneously.
Overall, I enjoyed this anime, and would reccomend it to anyone who likes sci-fi dramas with good small-unit military action scenes and an enjoyable plot with intriguing characters.

| Great stuff!!! Take the best elements from Starship Troopers and Aliens and mix in some taste from Metroid and you have Blue Gender. The show have a real sense of greatness. It spans over what seems to be a very big adventure! But be warned: some of the characters you grow to learn and love suddenly dies and dissapears... This only adds to the feel of a great show ass the feelings begins to flow. Incredible show! Highly reccommended!

| The first episodes of this anime are promising really get you going but by the end of the series you get a little disappointed.
Strong point: The character of Marlene Angel is really excellent; on of the best character ever created on anime. She is original and believable.
Weak point: It gets disappointing on the last episodes. All the tension build is great but the climax never came the way you expected , everything is resolve by itself, so you are like ………………...all for that?
Without a shadow of a doubt this anime has the best opening song (English version) ever not to mention de opening sequence. The ending song is also great.
English voice actors did a memorable performance specially the voice actress for Marlene.

| Alright. First of all, I compared the animation to the shows of it's time. Cowboy Bebop and One Piece are amoung them.
But this isn't a review about those, I'm just here to make a point. The animation is pretty good for it's time. If it weren't for me comparing them, I'd probably give it a low score, maybe a five or a 6.
The sound is average. I wish they'd stop screaming each others names already.
Story has been used in many anime series before. But although those circumstances, they put a good use to that story, and change it slightly. That's real good, since it is the bagilionth time I saw that story.
I loved how Yuji evolved from a normal human to a sleeper. Well, he was already a sleeper, but i mean the true form of a sleeper. Don't know what I'm talking about? Watch it. Marlene also changed, from being one crazy emotionless soldier, to a.. actually. you find out.
Value. You know, I really don't know what to say about this. I bought the DVD collection at Comic-Con, and I watched it. To me, it was worth the 60 bucks [Usually worth 100]. I'd say it's good.
And I really enjoyed this anime. Watched it in three days. I couldn't get over the last episode though. It was kind of.. weird. Yeah. I'm really not supposed to say much, because I'm trying to avoid getting my review deleted. [My reviews usually get deleted. --;]

| i'm so sick of hearing people complaining that this anime has bad animation. for god sakes people, this anime was made in 98 and was released in 99, don't go comparing it to the animation we have now days.
this is a great anime series. i was hooked from episode 1 all the way to 26. The character development between Kaido Yuji and Marlene Angel was very deep. We got to see the realation develope more and more as the series progressed on.
The ending was the only part that i though was kinda bad. the story wasn't really summed up. they never told us what happend to the Blue. I watched the movie and it didn't explain it eaither. and also that scrambled voice towards the end was also kind of weird.
over all, this is a great series. Its no doubt some of the better series that i've seen.

Take all the scenes with those lines out, and you’re left with a 2 minutes show.
Despite the low average, this show does have a few good points. The plot is pretty intense and interesting in the last 6 or so episodes. This is a pretty depressing show, almost...no, absolutely NO humor what so ever is in any second of this anime. It’s dead serious, and that is exactly what kills it, imo. Why? Well, mainly because of its low budget. The animation quality kills any attempt to feel the atmosphere on the show, because it's so bad, you’re getting disgusted by it and fail to concentrate on the plot. I mean, the animation is REALLY REALLY bad, one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Characters are developed too fast in my opinion. I mean, besides Yuji and Marlene we are introduced to characters in one episode, only for them to get killed or turn evil in the next one, without even getting to know them. The second half of the show turns into a political thing with no awareness as to who is really "the bad guys”. The ending was really bad, imo. NO real conclusions and it didn't make much sense. Sound was decent, the opening theme was great and the ending theme was so-so. BGM was also decent. Voice acting was good enough, but after a thousand times of people screaming "Yuji", you just wanna press the mute button.

| Blue Gender begins off similarily to the Hollywood movie Alien. But its more than that... under the surface of the Blue fights, is the struggle of human life in the world.
There is more than the usual human underdog survival stuff where the soldiers merely kill until all the baddies are gone.
Things begin to get tense and since these people are out on their own (in the beginning), it focuses a lot on human bonds. Although characters just feel SOO flat most of the time, that I can't get into the mood of this anime.
There is a love story, that's a big THEME of this anime, but ... based on other reviews, I expected more. There isn't that much in terms of romance.
One of my peeves is that this is so unrealistic... Fighting, dialog, movements, behavior etc. Also, they spend too much of the animation time on panning across scenes, what a waste of time!
Not enough happens in the beginning, and too much is spent on trying to show what the world looks like after the Blue invasion. Yet as they proceed deeper and deeper, things finally take for a journey. 1,2-3, boring, 4-7 (journey to find space),8-9 boring side story, 10-14 (space training and plot info about Sleepers), 15-17 fighting, 18 interesting plot twists, 19-23 fighting etc, 24-26 huh?
OVERALL - I would recommend not watching this... Blue Gender is intriguing... but its not all that exciting or original. It also doesn't leave any strong impressions... just some massive bug fight with elements of love and science fiction mixed it.
There are plenty of better anime to watch

| I absolutely love this anime series. I watched it the first time from AdultSwim and then rewatched it. I enjoyed it almost as much as the first time. I really like the animation, the characters all look nice and crisp. As for ths sound, I really liked the opening and ending theme songs. I guess the in episode sounds were just around average. The story is just flat out amazing. It starts off very slow but then starts picking up exactly at the sixth episode. There is a TREMENDOUS love story in here and it's not cheesy at all. It is one of my favorite love stories of all time in anime. The characters are phenomenal and I know a lot of people trash Yuji. However, he was whiny to show his very humane side which many lost including, Marlene. I loved how the creators slowly chipped away at Marlene's cold exterior and how much she changed. There are many twists in the story near the end and it was quite a rollercoaster for a ride. I enjoyed it immensely. And as such, the value, to me, is way up there.

| Like the cheesiest horror film, Blue Gender is mildly entertaining, but for all the wrong reasons. It tries it damndest to be gross and horrific, but the animation and characters aren't detailed enough for such. You'll laugh in all the wrong places (i.e., episode five had me cracking up). And the characters didn't make the situation better. I just couldn't take anything seriously. And I tried. I even put myself in Yuji's shoes. How would I react if I were put into artificial hibernation only to wake up twenty years later to find that the world I once knew is now ravished by gigantic bugs? But my sense of humor and sarcasm wouldn't let me. I told myself I'll just buy an ample supply of Raid and live (un?) happily ever after.
Because of the cheesiness and kooky explanations near the end, Blue Gender doesn't work well as a sci-fi anime. Surprisingly, the best part of the series is the relationship between the two protagonists: Yuji and Marlene. Shed away the Starship Trooper premise, and it would have made a pretty good romance. Or it could have been a parody of the sci-fi genre because I did find a lot of things humorous.
In the start, Yuji is a whiny, almost cowardly character. He definitely changes by the end of the anime, and he loses his marbles in a few scenes. Marlene is your typical ice queen in the beginning, but she actually grows a personality somewhere along the way. As mentioned before, the character development is the best part of the anime.
It's ironic that this anime's biggest flaw is also part of its charm. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much had it not been so cheesy. Whether or not you enjoy this anime probably depends on whether or not you can take it seriously. Either way, you're probably bound to like it. ...But I still say the show is in the wrong genre.

| At first, I was skeptical about this anime. I love science fiction animes, but I was unsure. If you're feeling the same, don't worry! This is a great sci fi anime! I found the beginning horribly boring! But don't let the beginning scare you away, this anime is great afterwards! It was agonizing to sit through the first 3 episodes, and I stopped watching it until about the 10th episode, but after the beginning, this anime was great. I loved it mostly for the characters. The story is pretty strong, and I thought the story was pretty original and entertaining. Marlene is a wonderful character to watch. Your first impression of her is nothing like what you think of her in the end and its a wonderful change to watch. The relationship between Yuji and Marlene is also interesting to watch! Yuji himself is a great character whom I absolutely adore! I think we can all relate to him, because if that happened to us I'm sure we'd feel the same! This anime is pretty good, I'd buy the dvds.

| One of the best Sci-Fi Horror anime on the market. It mixes a well thought out and planned out course of events that makes the viewer really feel the sensation of a desolated and overwhelmed Earth invaded by the giant alien bugs called the "Blue".
It follows the story of Yuji and Marlene along these horrific and tragic events, and we eventually get to see them grow into a wonderful relationship. Great story, with a good romance subplot. The rest of the cast were good too, but the real shine is the two main characters.
It's a good anime. I watched it on Cartoon Network, and I eventually bought the boxset. Chances are, if you enjoyed anime like RahXephon, you'll enjoy this one.

| Blue Gender is an average anime all around. The story is basically about the Blue (giant bug looking things) who take over earth. Of course the main characters try to take it back. Yuji seems like another Shinji Ikari at first but gets better. Marleane looks like Ken from street fighter hahaha. If you want to know more read my review.

| Blue Gender ist einmal mehr eine Serie die uns in eine Science-Fictionwelt mit apokalyptischem Szenario versetzt. Die Menschheit steht kurz vor der Ausrottung durch die Bedrohung die von einer anderen nichtmenschlichen Spezies ausgeht, hat sich jedoch noch nicht aufgegeben und plant den ultimativen Gegenschlag um sich wieder an den Anfang der Nahrungskette zu setzen. Das ist mit Sicherheit nicht neu und einen solchen Plot findet man in einer Vielzahl von Science-Fictionfilmen. Trotzdem muss das nicht heißen dass bei Blue Gender konservatives Gähnen angesagt ist, denn wenn die Ausführung stimmt kann man auch diesen vermeintlich ausgeschlachteten Plot unterhaltsam gestalten und auch wenn es zuerst nicht unbedingt so aussieht ist dies bei Blue Gender recht akzeptabel gelungen. Der Start der Serie ist durchwachsen: In den ersten Episoden geht es von der Story und den Charakteren her sehr verhalten von Statten und das Hauptelement das die Serie bestimmt und trägt ist nichts als die pure (und recht splattrige) Action. Trotz mangelnder Substanz in den oben genannten Kategorien kommt aber nur selten Langweile auf da, dank der üppigen Actionszenen, so gut wie immer etwas los ist. Da Action allein nicht glücklich macht kann man spätestens nach den ersten 6-10 Episoden aufatmen und die ersten kleinen Einblicke werden gewährt was Figuren und Plot betrifft. Es ist nichts allzu spektakuläres was man hier präsentiert bekommt aber es reicht aus um Fragen aufzuwerfen und somit den Zuschauer zum weiterschauen zu animieren. Und es zahlt sich aus wenn man hier Beharrlichkeit an den Tag legt denn die Geschichte bietet im späteren Verlauf einen interessanten Twist und vertieft sich zusehends. Gleiches gilt für die Charaktere die sich teilweise stark wandeln und überraschen. Das alles gipfelt schlussendlich in einem mitreißenden Showdown der für so manche Schwäche der Serie entschädigt und mich am Ende mit Zufriedenheit zurück ließ. Blue Gender ist insgesamt ein sehr solider Science-Fiction-Anime der nach holprigem Start und dem Ein oder Anderen kleinen Hänger in der Anfangsphase auf einen wilden Ritt einläd. Für Fans von Sci-Fi und Action durchaus empfehlenswert.

Hola a todos. Que pena me da tener que hablar mal de esta serie.
En el mundo aparece una enfermedad rarisima que no tiene cura y que afecta solo a algunos humanos y su unica solucion de supervivencia es ser congelados hasta que en el futuro se halle una.
El protagonista es uno de esos durmientes pero cuando se despierta en el futuro ve aterrorizado como una raza de insectos gigantes llamados blue han arrasado con la mayoria de la poblacion humana y que el mismo esta en peligro dado que los blue parecen querer matar tambien a todos los durmientes...
La historia es buena lo que pasa es que en vez de desenvolverla con interes te la sueltan a golpes por el final de la serie. Muy tipico.
La animacion se puede tragar pero para ser una serie de las nuevas es mala. Los personajes principales acaban siendo sosos. De echo me gustabam mas unos personajes secundarios llamados Alicia y Toni.
Por que no decir que la serie es una basura?. 1-Por que tiene accion. 2- Porque mientras vas viendo la serie te das cuenta que intentaron currarsela3- Porque en el desarrollo de los capitulos algunos consiguen hacerse interesantes. 4-Por el final ecologista.
Resumiendo no es una mala serie solo que algunos fallos pueden hacer aburrirse a mas de uno. Si se ve con paciencia pudede llegar a gustarte. Eso si para verla una vez y olvidarte de ella.

| generally, the first 10 eps were the best, then the series drops a little bit on pace, and becomes sort of repetitive.
ok, the animation is propably the less impressive part in this series, it is very old fashioned, and not so good in using the old style. Sometimes, the animation looks pretty good, other times, it looks like a 5 yrs old drawing.
the music was decent, so is the voice acting,, but the only problem here is the voice acting for the main character, yuji,,,, it's so squecky, which really grated on my nerves a LOT. but since i care more about the music, a 7 will do here.
the stroy is very good, though not extremely original. It has a very well structured base, and it is very engaging in the first 10 eps. But then, the pace drags as mentioned before, and there were some unnecessary eps as i think. 9 for the first 10 eps, and 7 for the later part. So an overall of 8 for story.
most of the characters were interesting, especially Marlene. I think marlene developed in a very realistic and reasonable way, and i managed to connect with here feelings many times. But the BIG problem is again Yugi, he is incredibelly lacking and childish to the point that it make me want to stop watching the series. Hw screams all the time, and even develops into a more reckless and childish character later on. All of the other chars were good, so a 9 for all chars, and a 5 for yuji. an overall of 7.
this series is a bit forgettable, means that it doesn't last long before you totally forget about it,, and also, the ending was a bit abrupt and inconclusive. but while it lasts, it is good enough that's why it gets a humble 6 here.
as i said, this one is a bit repetitive, so i had 8 enjoyment first, then it got to 6,, overall, a 7 will do here.
This series is kind of a mixture of a great series and a fair one. So i would say it's good enough, but you'll forget it easily. don't watch it if you seek more depth and attachment in anime.

| Seriously more people need to watch this show. Blue Gender is a combination of all that I love about anime which is a great story with great character. That is why Animation recieved the lowest score (can't really say low since 8 is pretty damn high) Yuri and Marlene are perfect complements of each other and the growth of characters really draws you into the series. Yes there are some question sex scenes, especially in episode 15, however it is done in a way seen in many R rated movies or even PG - 13. Would American Pie be as good without the nudity (maybe) but it didn't make the show worst. Not to give too much away but think of Starship Troopers with a better plot and more violence. Coming from funimation I didn't expect much but boy was I surprise so please go watch this series.

| This was amazing! This show is highly addictive I stayed up all night finishing it in one sitting. This show is a MUST for all action and sci-fi fans. Its got great characters, great story and shitload of action. And BEST OF ALL NO PSYCHOBABBLE!! that only means no fillers. Extremely straightforward for those who just wanna see Hollywood-esque post apocalyptic future.
The thing is that the creators of this anime make something cliched into something believable and incredibly intense all the way to the end. The characterization is incredible as they change over time and how everything works out. OH and it has a good ending... I mean how rare is that?

| Man oh man .... I know I'm pretty late in watching this but this series rocks!
I saw the first few episodes long ago and was always drawn to this show. finally not too much psycho babble like many shows tend to get in the end, many good twists but not too much, good action, and absolutely adorable characters. I fell in love with "Marlene", and loved and hated yoji at times. DAMN GOOD SHOW!!!
