| This is, essentially, a slightly elaborated-on adaption of one arc of the Mermaid's Forest manga. This is tailored specifically to stand independently from the manga, so even though this puts you right in the middle of the Mermaid's Forest universe the plot is still perfectly clear. This storyline is also told in the Mermaid's Forest TV series, which I watched previous to watching this OVA. Structurally they are very similar, right down to identical animation and dialogue. Regardless, this OVA gets an extra ten or fifteen minutes to delve into some aspects that were considerably lacking in the TV version -- most notably, a stronger backstory as to the twins' past and a clear resolution of what happens to Towa after the entire Mermaid's Hill affair. It also takes more time, especially towards the end, to flesh out the relationship between Yuta and Mana, something that is very shakily presented in the TV series.
Also, it may be on the basis of the animation, but this whole affair seems a hell of a lot darker than the TV series, which was often too bright and showy in spite of itself. Compounded with the fact that this is my second-favorite plot arc of what I've seen in the TV series, I enjoyed this OVA greatly.
Overall, it's gloomier, creepier, and more depressing than its TV-series depiction...not to mention downright better. However, it's something of a toss-up whether or not this OVA warrants 50 minutes of your time for something that you've probably already seen. It does a better job of the plot arc than is covered in the TV series, but for all intents and purposes you really won't miss out on much if you skip this over.

| Having previously seen Mermaid's Forrest TV, it was nice to sit down with the original OVA (as it was shortened to 30 minutes and latter run as an episode in MF-TV)
The story in MF is more horror-morbid then horror-scary and makes great use of the simpler, darker animation that you'll find in the show. There's a fair ammount of character development for the length that the show runs for and even manages to put a few plot twists to good use.
Mermaid's Forrest is old by most people's standards but is still a good OVA. I watched this after MF-TV and for better or worse, didnt notice much of a difference between the 30min television rendition of this story vs. the 50min OVA.

| A great anime, I find it memorable ten years later. Ever wonder what Rumiko Takahashi would be like if she tried out the horror genre? It's a shame the mermaid series never made it into a TV show, because I enjoyed it greatly. It's awfully threadbare at times, but it tells a simple story quite effectively. Granted, the monsters are lame, but it's not the worst attempt to explore immortality. One thing that always bothered me though was: If you're going to live a few centuries while constantly getting beat the hell up, wouldn't it dawn on you to learn some fighting skills at some point?
And Mana just sounds so cute when she's saying "Zutto, zutto eien ni!" Update! They've made a TV series out of this now, which is very accurate to the original manga. Try it out...I know I will.

| This is like the first anime where I saw nudity. Of course showing tits in Japan is something they really don't care about, but if you live in America(the land of restriction) nudity requires us to be 18 years old. That's when I marvel my parents thinking anime are kiddy shows. But enough of that story, I got it when I was like in 7th grade and watch it and it was a really dark and good story. The whole eating mermaid flesh turns you into a mermaid or kills you was really interesting. A very good anime for the mermaid genre.
