From Gasaraki director Takahashi Ryousuke, Armored Trooper Votoms proved to be interesting for the most part, excluding some episodes of the last season. The final episode was a rip-off from one very popular sci-fi film, except of course if that film was based on a sci-fi novel.

It seems that due to marketing strategies older animes are ignored in favour of the more recent ones. Gasaraki has so many reviews and rating hits yet this title far less. I discovered this title by chance, even if it isnt relatively that unpopular.

Despite being made in 1983 it has some originality in the plot and the mecha design. If you consider that no 3D models and computers were used, like it happens now where we're used in full frame mecha models, the design of ATV is quite good. Character design was peculiar, especially the way they designed the legs, but once you're used to it....

The first three seasons were very action packed and featured also a dark plot, together with warfare where civilians are involved. So if you liked Legend of Galactic Heroes you'll like this too. Mecha battles were also very interesting and only few episodes turned boring. Favorite season was the second.

But something went wrong in the last season where it all turned out too sci-fi, reducing the elements that made the previous seasons good and the secondary characters even more.

Considering how many animes later on and till today would follow the same plot and turning more popular (eg Outlaw Star), it would be unfair not to give this anime a chance since despite the old animation style it outperforms more recent series in many fields. Sometimes the old animation gives the characters and air of uniqueness most computer generated animes today fail to achieve.

Voice actors were exceptional, considering the series has a plot like a sci-fi B-movie in some cases.

As for sound, except the SFX and the repeated music dont expect anything more.

The transfer quality wasnt that good and it could have been digitally remastered to do this series justice.
Still a good watch if you want series with a solid story and characters and not so pleasant moments or fan-service.
For its time ATV was unique.

Overall it wasn't as good as I had expected... Still, it wasn't bad in any way.

It's about an elite soldier called Chirico, who gets betrayed by his own army after finding out about a secret he's not supposed to know about. This basically evolves into some one man against the army story... Sort of like Rambo, but more complicated.
Although there's not too much character developement going on, most of the important characters are nice and likable, and the mecha is pretty realistic.

The animation has a nice touch to it, but since the show is old it's quite dull mostly and not very flashy.
The opening and ending themes are nice, the voice acting is good although a bit onesided. The BGM and SFX is mostly pretty dull.

Note: The R1 dvds are pretty bad, looks like they're VHS sourced and the subs are hardcoded. Lots of extras though.
