Very nice anime. Realistic basketball stuff, you will enjoy even more this anime if you are a basketball fan. It is a really funny anime also. The only thing is the history doesn't go as far as the manga, anyway the story continues in the manga. I highly recommend this anime!

This anime had a good potential, but the anime went short. Especially the last season (ep. 90 and onwards) completely ruined this anime. If you are to watch this anime and if you were to enjoy this anime, do yourself a favor and STOP WATCHING IT around ep. 86!

Animation: I liked the way the characters were drawn and the comedic faces of the characters. Also, there were no Mickey-Mouse facial expressions (where eyes take 2/3 of the face).

Sound: I have to say, up to ep. 86, I really liked how the sound interacted with the visual effects to create a sense of outstanding dunk, block, or even comedic scenes.

Story: overall, story was dealing with Shohoku's path to the national championship (what a surprise ^_^). Anyways, the story was flowing very smoothly, but as I mentioned earlier, it felt short around ep. 86. Following ep. 86 and on, the story seemed to be forced in and extremely cheesy.

Character: each character had different background and lifestyle that was depicted in the anime, but times after times that self-prising Hirumitch babbles became really annoying.

Value: as a whole anime, I would not recommend to watch for people who want to be impressed by the anime. It is along the lines of so-so anime.

Enjoyment: I enjoyed the anime up to ep. 86, but as overall anime, I still recall that bitter taste of the last eps

One of the most enjoyable sports anime there is. Very good build-up and excellent basketball scenes.

It is true that some games go over 10 episodes, each one more thrilling and using a lot of cliffhangers. You end up nail-biting if you cannot watch the next one.

Slam Dunk! has nearly none of the typical cliches you find in sports anime/movies which is quite refreshing. As it is very long running there is also quite some development of the characters and you get good background on most of them.

I enjoyed it very much and was hooked right away. It is not as "warm" and focusing on the human issues as Princess Nine but more on to the real sports. If you hate sports anime this will not convert you. But if you are even remotely interested you will enjoy it.

first off i'd like to say, this is probably the one of, if not THE most hilarious animes i've ever seen... the main character sakuragi hanamichi, is probably the loudest, most ignorant but extremely funny character you'll ever come across.... but other then comedy, the story has a lot of great elements in it's repertoire such as; drama, action, and even a few twists in the story... but the best thing about the whole show would have to be the character development, you can tell each and every character was just really thought out... there not just names and faces that you have to learn, even the minor characters have alot of history and emotion... this the 2nd best anime i've ever seen in my life... you cant help but love slam dunk, even if you dont even know what basketball is

One of the first anime I watched. The enjoyment can't be described with words.Back
when I was younger,Slam Dunk was aired in one of the channel in the television I frequently watch. That time was when Rukawa managed to dunk when there are 3 other players guarding him.I can't stop repeating 'wow' back then. This is how I get to know Slam Dunk.

The basketball scene did keep repeating at times, making the scores apparent but some are awesome too.The one Rukawa did aforementioned earlier is an example,Sakuragi's blocks in the dying moments of the match between Ryonan and them in another.

Perhaps Slam Dunk did not excel other anime with its 'sport' genre(I don't really agree with that)but it will if wanting to compare with the comedy it brings out.

Was rather unhappy to the fact that not many people like Slam Dunk but was equally happy when there are still somebody singing all praises of it.
Slam Dunk got almost everything there(not the L-R part).Just my views,I think that Prince of Tennis is a far cry behind to even trying to surpass Slam Dunk.(Not a rant I repeat)

Slam Dunk is one of the, no, probably the best anime about basketball I have seen as of yet. While its characters like to get on the annoying side a lot and plot is stretched far too long, the most important thing, basketball matches, are really interesting.

It's very easy to recommend this show... If you have any interest in basketball you should give Slam Dunk a shot, if you don't, then do not. >_<

Slam Dunk is one of the best animes ever seen, in my point of view. The story has many deep meanings starting with story of a high school boy who had NO LIFE just hanging with friends until he meets with his new fate, new love and new life. The unique combination of different characters with different and attractive personalities and styles gave the anime a very tasty flavor. For me, I loved Sakuragi's character a lot; he is funny, stubborn, very challenging and sensitive. Anyhow, I admired the great artist who drew these characters professionally with the shade lines, the muscles and the funny hilarious facial expressions. The background sounds were really cool and suit the playground conditions especially when the match is about to finish and the score is almost the same and you think that the " Shohoku " sakuragi's team **as a typical end** will win and suddenly…AHH the music is going higher and higher..lool..its great feeling..all the time it keeps you on fire to know what is going to happen next..

I saw Slam Dunk many years ago, in a time when I was keen on playing Basketball and the basketball competition in the town is about to start, slam dunk is really a nice memory.!!^^"

Sakuragi Hanamichi is your normal high school delinquent. What separates himself from other delinquents is that he has been horrible with the women. So when he meets this cute freshman girl in Haruko, he's determined not to mess things up. He finds out she's a big fan of basketball, though the heart piercer is that she likes another basketball player who's bound to be on to the team. What does Sakuragi do? Joins the sport too. Though Sakuragi will realize the hard way how hard a sport basketball really is.

Don't be fooled though; while Sakuragi's drive for playing basketball was because of Haruko, his love for basketball starts to develop rapidly once he was introduced to it, that he'd continue playing regardless of Haruko. At least that's how I saw it.

The first episode when he first starts playing basketball presented a person that had no clue how to even play it. He didn't know how to dribble, do a basic lay up, etc. Though like all beginners, he eventually learned the basics, but even then, Sakuragi quickly learned that the basics covered more than he had anticipated. Throughout the course of 100 episodes, Sakuragi quickly learns the ins and outs of basketball, but even then, he still has a lot to learn.

Though does it take Sakuragi 100 episodes to learn the basics of episodes? Is he just that slow? It's none of the above; basketball is actually a much deeper sport than most people, especially Hanamichi, would have believed prior to watching Slam Dunk. Slam Dunk actually does a thoroughly good job of not only teaching Sakuragi about basketball, but to the audience of those who are just as ignorant about basketball as Sakuragi. This is one of the charms of Slam Dunk; it does an amazing job of sticking to basketball, while in the process, presenting a very good and dramatic shounen anime.

Throughout the course of the many matches in Slam Dunk, spectactors will break down and analyze different game situations to the person beside them who are curious what had just happened in that previous basketball sequence. Slam Dunk does a brilliant job of setting up uniquely the different opponents who'll be matching up against Shohoku in order to present different ideas, beliefs, and strategies, that are used in basketball on a consistent basis. It actually plays out like your normal and average fighting shounen anime, except replace fighting with basketball.

People have been telling me only basketball fans like myself would really enjoy Slam Dunk, and while that may be true, it's amazing how education and smart Slam Dunk is. Even I learned a thing or two just watching it. Even if you're new to basketball, it's almost impossible to not understand what's going on, because it just does an amazing job of exploring ideas and explaining them.

You can't only enjoy Slam Dunk for its basketball. This anime is actually pretty dramatic, and it's an effective drama too. Like most of us, the Shohoku players have pretty emotional pasts that'll more than likely touch your heart. There's also that "This is so awesome, I'm going to marathon it all!" feeling that you often get in good shounen mangas. 1/4's into the anime, there's a huge fight raging on between outsiders and the Shohoku players. Street fighting was portrayed perfectly in its utmost cruelty in these sequences. The fights weren't jaw dropping like Dragonball Z; they were those types of fights with feelings of pity and hotbloodedness.

And it's not only that. Heart breaking losses in sports movies or TV shows have always been horribly executed. Slam Dunk is the only exception. They just weren't a matter of making a shot or missing it, though unfortunately, going further would spoil the fun.

The characters are also of brag worthy material. Rukawa may seem like the quiet guy that always likes sleeping and excels at playing basketball, but as you progress with the anime, you see that his character isn't as shallow as you'd expect it to be. The coach Mr. Anzai is also pretty mysterious himself, and you'll learn more about him as the anime drives deeper into the series. And I can't leave out Sakuragi's delinquent friends. This is one of the most entertaining bunch of comic relief I've ever watched. They aren't overly involved with the anime, yet they provide humour.

However, oftentimes, Slam Dunk likes dragging out its comic relief. In fact, it likes dragging things out entirely. This anime could have been a fifty to seventy series, yet it pulled a Dragonball Z because of obvious "catching up to manga" reasons. Between each sequence of plays during a match, the camera rolls into the mind of a non important character who thinks about trivial and unnecessary things. Some matches even last ten episodes or more because of this.

The filler is pretty terribly dragged out, but the standalone filler not found in the manga were pretty awesome. Most of them directly involve Sakuragi's gang and how they try to get a job in order to watch Shohoku's upcoming game, fighting against other random delinquents, etc. There's also a studying episode that'll give huge Dragonball Z fans nostalgia of the awesome driving episode with Piccolo and Goku.

Slam Dunk would have been one of the best animes ever if it weren't for the fact that the anime ended much too early, and the terrible dragged out filler. Some episodes, you just lay down there, wake up a couple minutes later, rewind to see what you missed, and realize you didn't miss anything at all. However, the anime is still a classic that's not only about basketball. Though if you're one that didn't enjoy Dragonball Z because of its length and habit of dragging things out, then you might want to think twice with Slam Dunk.

Slam dunk is the best sports anime I've ever watched. Though I'm not a fan of basketball and never bothered to watch even a single game, I was really hooked because of the humor, unlike in other sports anime like Hungry Heart and Captain Tsubasa where I almost couldn't finish a single ep because of the boredom. In Slam Dunk, sports is combined well with comedy and so it would never make the audience doze off.

The story is simple, its about a high school student who wants to play basketball to impress his crush and to be close to her. Well, that is the agenda of Sakuragi at first but as he learned more about the sports, we can say that he "fell in love" with basketball too.

It's been a long time since i have finished a serie completely. the one to finish that silence was Slam Dunk. Luckily, SD was good enough to make me watch anime again.

Generally i like almost everything about the show, from the nice animation, along the sound and the story, and ofcurse, the characters, but sd suffers from a very big problem -> pace.
the pace in SD might be horibble. some of the basketballs game cover like 20 episoides, and that one thing make the serie less enjoyable.
by any way, i will reccomend this to anyone that don't care about how much serrious the anime he watches is.

I watched this show back in the 90s, but abandoned it cause of the weird animation, but then I rewatched it for not too long ago, the animation is still weird but I gave it a chance. This is one of the funniest Anime Ive ever watched. Its exciting and very funny. The pace can be a little slow , like 2 min in animetime = 2 episode in real life. But if you get used to the animation this will be one of the funnies Anime.

I must confess ... the reason I rate this anime so highly is because I've read the manga as well. Slam Dunk is about basketball and high school love ... and hilarious exploits! The anime is rather slow-paced, and at times I just skipped the whole thing. That's why the Value and Enjoyment ratings are so low.

Having said all that, Slam Dunk is one of my favourite manga to read, and the anime is very faithful to it. The animation and sound are much better than it's peers, considering how long this has been around.

Although I would recommend you getting the manga instead, because it(manga) take you through the Nationals and wraps the whole story up. The anime stops halfway through the manga.

this is a well-deserved classic anime that still puts other newer animes to shame (considering the fact that this anime's a decade old ^^;)

i'm not a basketballer or anything, but this amazing anime really kept me watching till the very last ep. (101 eps, just make sure u don go for an anime-a-thon). unlike other sports anime, which eventually gets repetitive & boring, this anime picks up on the story and the matches get more & more exciting.

this anime really gets close to having it all, great animations (inoue takehiko is brilliant), great sounds (sound effect is more significant, coz the opening & ending themes are a little outdated but nevertheless still good), great characters, great storyline (solid story & incredible matches), good moral-of-the-story. i really enjoyed it.

Good points: The show is very hilarious. The scenes about sakuragi mis understanding things or the scenes sakuragi tries to think and how he tries to show off but fails.

Bad points: Well for a high school basketball team their stamina is too freakin high. For an entire game usually 5 players only play. And the basketball court which they run back and forth is just too big for them to take that much time to get from one side to another. Some episodes also takes too much time like one shot taking an entire episode to reach the hoop.

I'm ranking it this high due to the fact that no other sports anime can really match up to it. Slam Dunk truly captures everything basketball is and presents it with a good plot not about a team who goes play and wins everythign cuase they have this one amazing guy (unlike Dear Boys) but about a team that struggled and lost and learned throughout it's season. A great anime that all basketball lovers should watch.

The best sports anime I have ever seen. And the best commedy too, a story around a simple high school basketball team that is so funny and interesting. The games are detailed, sometimes going more than 10 episodes for a game, too cool. Its old, unfortunaly the animation isn't good enough to this explendid series. The anime made me to make an amv in tribute of it, and made me play basketball more seriously. You should surely watch this explendid anime ^^

One of the few best Sports anime outhere ( ALong side with Hajime no Ipop and Prince Of Tenis). Since it's a 1993 production , then it is normal for the animation and sound to be a bit "SLOPPY" to newer animes standards. Never the less , it will deliver unmatched entertainment. The story of basket ball rookie , Sakuragi Hanamichi , and his path in perfecting the game , will just make laugh so hard along side with goose bumps from the intensity of the anime.
Will he be able to achieve his dream in conquesring the country ?
