| Well...let's get this review under way...
I have seen quite a fair share of anime from the mecha genre, raging from the classics like Macron 1 or Grendeizer to the modern series. It's always nice to see a comeback of the classic ideas. This show surely tries that and in a way succeeds.
I wasn't particularly thrilled with the animation and music. For 2001 it's pretty standard if not average. The music is good but gets repetitive after a few episodes because of the nagging use of the transformation scene in each and every episode. The cast for the voices...I have no complaints...good choice for each character.
The graphic style was more detailed than I originally expected it to be. Some episodes really impressed me with the representation for the damage(not an important aspect, I know, but it's something that actually draws attention).
The characters are horribly underused and undeveloped. I would've preferred one or two of the episodes with really useless fights to concentrate only on the characters. Even though their interaction is fairly good, there are no backgrounds and no motives for most of the characters. They simply act like being on a wire, nothing surprising. I enjoyed a few moments with the characters(and I do mean "few").
On to the story: ZERO! Each episode is like a different world, nothing connecting from start to end. A few hints along the last episodes but other than that...nothing much. The fact that it connects a bit with the original Dangaioh OVA from 1987 is a bit of a nice touch but not enough to redeem the compromised story.
However, there is a good side to the story: the ending which actually surprises. Some may like it, some may hate it. I liked it.
When I'll have time I'll probably rewatch some episodes from this. There are quite a few great moments in the anime raging from some echi jokes(50-50 good puns - bad puns), a bit of romance between the characters which usually becomes comedy. One particular episode really impressed me: episode 10. For the mecha fan I find that episode to be mecha poetry...the formula for that ep was just perfect. If the series was composed only out of episodes like that...I wouldn't mind rating it a 9.
In the end I must say that I enjoyed this. It was a nice reminder of the origins. Perhaps I'll try getting the original OVA just for kicks.
