Decent anime that shines in the story and character development. The animation is clean for the most part, but looks dated, while the music is alright.

Even though the theme revolves around Go, as someone else stated, it is more about rivalry and the development of the characters through the series, with them growing apart and together through different circumstances. Very well done and the best I've seen in some time.

I actually wrote quite a long review, but it was lost, so now I will write a shorter one.

Hikaru No Go is decent. It is better than Naruto and Bleach, though that isn't saying a lot. It is fairly unique for a shounen anime;in that it isn't the same power up, fight filled fare you may be accustomed to. It isn't all that pretty, it doesn't sound good, but there is something compelling about the game of Go and the Go world which is developed.

One of the best animes ever. Hikaru no Go was one of the first animes I've ever watched and remains as one of my favourites. Despite it is kind of outdated right now in terms of visual and audio presentation it is a classic and a must see anime.

A lot has been written about HnG. I too was a bit skeptical about a series dealing with a board game, but soon in the series you realize the story is more about rivalry, effort and fighting spirit more than about the game itself.
The animation is pretty good , especially during the openings. The soundtrack is just impressive, with some really good tunes in the ops and endings, and lovely orchestrated pieces during the matches. Theres some nice piano work here and there.
Where this anime really shines thought, is character development.
Regarding value, i can say i've watchet the entire series about 5 times now, and each of them was great.
This is a personal favourite of mine, and without doubt a series you shouldnt miss, especially if the board theme is whats putting you off.

wow this one is impressive. it plays out like a typical shonen "boy gets stronger" plot, but it is so good, on the same level of Hajime no Ippo.

the animation is crisp and modern. the character designs are consistent throughout the whole show.

the songs and music for the series are great. the "battle music" is intense and everything matches well with the intended mood. the openings and closings are very nice as well.

the story and characters are what really matters though, and this one delivers. hikaru and sai are the mains and they are very entertaining yet their relationship is complex due to the nature of their association. it gets deep near the end and it's very emotional. the plot sucks you in and doesn't relent for the whole 75 eps. all the side-plots and characters are fleshed out and by the end you are more than satisfied with the results.

highly recommended. a must-watch for any fan of quality anime.

Hikaru no Go is a 75 episode anime first released in 2001 about the ancient yet still popular board game Go. Thanks to the complex nature of the game, slow pace, and the long duration of each game, Go is not the kind of board game that makes people that have never before come in contact with it sit on the edge of their seats. In fact, many seeing the game for the first time might find it to be extremely boring. Hikaru no Go, however, is a totally different experience, and that experience is outstanding.

The graphics and animation is not an area where Hikaru no Go excels at. Certainly, the anime does sufficient to complement the mood of its storyline, and the character designs are unique, but there are a few graphical errors and inconsistencies. The detail of the scenes and backgrounds also feel outdated, especially in the later parts of the anime, which were released in 2003. The animation in Hikaru no Go are also reused quite often, and seem slightly over simplified at times. However, the most important factor is that the graphics and animation do not negatively affect the other areas of the anime, which it most certainly does not in this case.

The soundtrack of Hikaru no Go is one of the factors that makes it shine. The background tracks, although repetitive, are exciting to listen to. This adds a lot to the otherwise boring scenes of board game action. The opening and ending themes are equally exciting to listen to, and the sound effects complement the scenes quite well. Although the voices don't age with the characters in the anime, the voice acting is mostly decent and fit the characters well. Overall, the soundtrack in Hikaru no Go is key in the success of this anime.

The storyline of Hikaru no Go cannot be described as anything less than a great achievement. Despite the occasional slowdown in pace caused by the nature of the game, the storyline still manages to portray an old board game in an exciting and gripping fashion. With the addition of an adequate amount of drama and humour, Hikaru no Go is an anime which will appeal to almost everyone. The storyline starts off well, and has a surprisingly excellent ending, thanks to the well executed character development. There are one or two episodes of fillers, but even those are a pleasure to watch. Complemented with the animation and sound tracks, Hikaru no Go definitely shines brightest in its storyline.

Lasting a total of 75 episodes, Hikaru no Go has more than sufficient time to develop its characters, and the anime has spent that time well. As a result, the action of the characters rarely seem out of place. Almost every character is Hikaru no Go's vast cast is developed, and this is the main factor in Hikaru no Go's unexpectedly good ending.

In summary, Hikaru no Go is an outstanding achievement. Its excellent combination of storyline, character development and soundtrack has managed to achieve what has never been done before in anime. Its success is visible in the rise in popularity of the board game Go across Asia. I do not believe that Hikaru no Go has been released in Europe, but I hope that it's just a matter of time. There is room for a sequel, but it is definitely not necessary. A 77 minute movie has been released in 2004 as a special episode following shortly from where the anime left off, which is great for viewers who have enjoyed the series. Recommendation wise, there's no need to say that Hikaru no Go is a must for Go lovers. For everyone else, I am almost certain that this anime will be a pleasant surprise.

Really solid series. Not sure why I decided to watch it, but I'm really glad I did. I had no interest in Go coming in. I guess I have a very mild interest in it now, but I don't plan on playing. I would consider learning if I had friends who played. Aside from the game, the series on its own is strong. You would think the game would get repetetive, but they throw in variations to keep it fresh every time. It's always thrilling watching each game. I did do a lot of watching in fast forward, but I tend to do this for all series. You may want to use FF for the games especially as they can get a little slow. Highly recommended.

Personally I find the person who wrote previous review, Rock kakashlee, an idiot. Art will be art no matter how old the drawings are. Its not the current technology that makes something good. The fact that they managed to make a story about a board game this addicting, that itself is art. Pure art. It was funny, it was exciting, it was sad at times but it was always worth watching due to the very deep story. The way Rock Kakashlee is thinking The Mona Lisa, or any other famous painting, is old and not worth looking at because with todays stuff we could just have made it into a realistic 3D animation instead. I found the animation quite nice, actually very nice. Some anime you see really odd drawing techniques that take time to get used to and untill you get used to it you cant fully appriciate the anime. In this case there was no such thing because the anime was drawn well, clean and, in lack of better word, perfect. Greatness has nothing to do with being new. If its good, its good. Thats how it will always be and should always be. And those complaining about the end are the ones that dont understand it. The end is not an end, its a begining of something new.

I really avoid giving so high points to all those criteria, but total 10 pts is well deserved! Who could imagine that quality of story & animation for a board game would come out? It does not matter you play go or not. This anime is something different and you should not miss.

Animation:
Maybe Hikaru no Go does not bring something revolutionary to animation techniques, but I really liked the animation. Especially the stone placing scenes makes you feel the action. Nearly all games are just like battles, it is so exciting. The background is also drawn so detailed and neatly.

Sound:
All of opening/ending themes are superb songs. Especially first opening `Bokura no Bouken` really really fits the anime and grabs you from the very first episode. The music and sfx is also excellent. Really makes you grasp the atmosphere. OST are strongly recommended.

Story:
As i mentioned, at first one thinks "what can it be.. about a board game..?". But that is not likely to be the fact, the series attracts you from the very first episode. Story is really great. It is never complicated. The writer never tends you to teach the rules of the game, because you simply do not need to be a go player to understand what is going on. But sure, learning the rules maybe an outcome of the anime, it is quite impressive that there are so many people starting playing go after watching this series. If i go on to story, Hikaru's and Sai's feelings and ambitions on the road to being a stronger Go player, is the main theme, they get over the obstacles one by one. But believe it is not quite simple. I don't want to tell more about the breakpoints and their adventures in order not to give spoils.

Character:
First of all, nearly all of the characters are -of course- go players. Most of them are professional and rest are to-be professionals. All those characters except main characters are developed as deeply as viewer wonders to know. The focus is on the our main heroes. Relation between those two: Hikaru & Sai is really well developed. Their attitude is not to be predicted easily. From start, one thinks of Hikaru's being "puppet" but of course he is not likely to become that kind of player.

Value:
There are tens of scenes worth watching again and again. Nearly all of the games are very exciting. One's pleasure from this show very slightly depends on the fact if s/he know how to play Go.

I really liked Hikaru no Go...for a while. While the story is certainly is very original and everything is portrayed well, there are many things that detract from the overall enjoyment of this anime. In the last 20 or so episodes, the story also lags behind, gaining a more serious feeling that takes away the novelty of the anime. Still recommended to all go fans, as well as anyone who doesn't have better anime to be watching.

This is a good anime, but not a great one. its story and character development is lengthy and incomplete. Animation and OST is good, but nothing to fawn over. But throughout its 75 episodes I was intrigued and immensely involved with the storyline and the characters. This anime is worthy of anyones attention. Even if you know nothing about GO, I would recommend them to watch this anime for its drama. Anyone who watches this anime is in for a treat.

So this anime is about a young boy who gets possessed by a GO master ghost. Turns out that Hikaru himself have a great talent for go and he decides to chase after his self declared rival Touya. The most interesting part of this anime all revolves around stories between characters. There are two main relationships: Hikaru and Touya, and Hikaru and Sai. Both of them are very fully developed and well set up. The most interesting part is the second hlaf of the anime when Hikaru's relationship between Sai begin to change. Although i do think that conflict came in a bit late, it was rewarding to see it. Other character interactions are very good as well. Such as the insei people and the guy who goes to china to train. Everyone's story is worth caring about and watching.

Storyline is largely driven by character interactions and actions rather than story driving them. So storyline must be analyze in the realm of characters. In that sense storyline is less important. however certainly story created through the characters is a good one and a well developed one. Watch Hikaru develop over time through his sucesses and failures is a rewarding experience. Touya, although one dimensional, provide different colors to this anime. Sai is the one however steal the show especially towards the middle and the episodes little bit past the middle.

Regretfully, all this never really reaches conclusion. Story is left unfinished and leaves the viewers wanting for more. In a way the series have reached a conclusion in caracter development, but now the story which is not fully developed comes to a rather abrupt end. I found a little disappointing.

Animation is commendable. Especially how characters over time change. But one thing that bugged me was Hikaru's hair style. I don't know... it just distracted me. His front highlight loked more like a clip on to me then his natural hair. Music is also decent. The OPs and EDs and good, but its never really great.

In short, this is a good anime that fullymakes use of its interesting characters and their interactions. Story is a bit underdeveloped, but that's forgivable. All and in all this anime should attract your attention even if you don't know go. Hey it just might make a go fan out of you. This anime is a rewarding one. Don't miss it.

this anime made me watch the whole series in just 3 -4 days. the anime colors are quite vividly colorful. the ost is one of the best i've heard. the value it imparts is somewhat like "karmic debts".... that someone has a certain purpose in life and it has to be fulfilled or realized" that's how the story was laid out. the first 50 episodes are just great. but the next episodes after that aren't quite as good. i felt a little bit let-down. i think the story creator had a little " creativity burn-out" and this is quite expected from creating too many episodes for one story. although the ending was good, the author could have made it better.
overall, i love this anime. it is really one of the best animes i have watched.

Upon watching my first episode of Hikaru no Go, I found that I finished watching the series about a week later. That's roughly 10 episodes per day. Using this statistic, I would have to say this series is one of the most captivating in the anime world.

That is not to say it is the best or even one of my favorites. But for some reason I had to know what was going to happen to the characters, what would the tournaments' outcomes be, how far would Hikaru go. The very game of Go put me in a trance the whole way through.

Hikaru no Go, therefore, was a light series for me to watch. It didn't ask too much of me, just that I enjoy the game and rivalries.

At first glance, an anime about a boardgame invented in Ancient China does not sound particularly appealing. Yet, somehow, Hikaru no Go masterfully draws its audience into the fascinating world of Go for 75 riveting episodes. So compellingly does Hotta Yumi weave the tale of Shindou Hikaru that the anime sparked a wave of resurgence in Go amongst young players in Asia while it aired on television.

The brilliance of Hikaru no Go lies in that it is an anime about life, in the guise of an anime about the boardgame of Go. At its heart, the story is a bittersweet portrayal of the search for purpose, the reach for perfection, and the beauty of loss and discovery. The story is simple, but carries deep themes which teach viewers something new about themselves with each viewing.

The characters of Hikaru no Go succeed brilliantly because they are unique, but very human and compellingly believable. Shindou Hikaru, for example, is our hero - a spirited boy possessed of a kind heart and a fierce will, but who is not afraid to cry. His Go rival, Touya Akira, is equally intense, and struggles with his own trials over the course of the anime.

Obata Takeshi's legendary attention to detail is only exemplified in Hikaru no Go. Even the minutest detail, such as a fingerprint on a dusty Go board, is given great attention, and drawn in, even when the Go board in question is a part of the background. Furthermore, his characters are always clothed in stylish wardrobes, a fine detail which is missing in many animes.

The soundtrack is simple, but unforgettable. The music accompanies the mood with a seamless elegance not found in other animes. So much does the music resonate with the emotions of the characters that months afterwards, when remembering a scene from the anime, the music is most likely to surface to one's mind as well.

Voice acting was sublime, balanced, and not overdone. Emotions were conveyed so convincingly, especially by Kawakami Tomoko (the Seiyuu who plays Hikaru) that the audience is completely drawn in to the story.

If only there were more animes like Hikaru no Go, which are able to successfully combine all the elements of greatness in anime into one series. Long have I searched for another anime that could rival the magic of Hotta Yumi's masterpiece.

I am still searching.

like many people here i had no idea what go was about. i happened to download one episode and was stunned by the way the story is told.

a friend of mine asked me how i can watch an anime that just shows people playing go. he asked me if the main character is a detective and solves many murder cases and plays go for hobby. i said no and he laughed at me.

hikaru no go does a great job in pulling you into the world of go. i think everyone played go online after watching it.

the story focuses around a normal boy that has never even heard of go. but one day he happens to find an old go board and a ghost named sai drives into his body. sai was one of the greatest go player long ago but his ghost still remains because he has something left in his life to be done. he has to master the move of god.

sai forces hikaru to go to a go salon. but hikaru doesnt really want to play go. its something for old people like his grandfather, he says. but hikaru gets to like it very much and becomes very competitive about it. after letting sai play against a young go genius hikaru has found his rival he wants to beat on his own.

the good thing of hikaru no go is that a total beginner is the main person. it encourages you to begin playing also and practice very hard.hikaru becomes better and better and never loses his interest in playing.

the animation is quite well done. the views of the city were quite detailed but i didntlike the character design. the sound is perfect in my opinion. it matches the tensive go matches very well and never makes you feel annoyed.

hikaru is the main person, together with sai. its nice to see him mature and changing his clothes;-). he doesnt just mature in growth but also in his behaviour.

i enjoyed it very much and i hope they are gonna make some ova again. there is still the duel of hikaru and his rival left. ironically everyone i showed it seemed to like it so i recommend it to everyone.

Hikaru no go is basically a boy who gets haunted my a Go master. The Go Master (Named Sai) eventually gets Hikaru into Go, and from there they play Go to find the 'Golden Hand' (The best move in Go).

ANYWAYS, overall impressions was that the animation was pretty nice from the year 2000's standards. The music was intense, sad, happy... it makes you all choked up inside sometimes.../cry. But overall it enchanced the way the anime evoked feelings. Story, was well thought out, character were memorable and it was hilarious at times. Maybe I feel too mature for this anime or something, but it seemed childish at times (which i don't always find bad...). Very well thought out.
