| Patlabor is a pretty famous anime from back in the early 90s [I think even part of the 80s]. This was when Mecha animes were at an all time high and it was all about military or police mecha and stuff. Patlabor really stood out because they didn't go off the deep end with the fantasy—meaning, they don't transform, they don't talk, they can't fly [usually] go into space or the deep ocean, they don't carry endless racks of missiles.....you catch my drift? YEAH, it's pretty obvious that Patlabors don't exist but my point is that this story kind of handled it with some sense of reality like it's just another vehicle like a forklift or crane or some other construction vehicle. Even though the show is kind of old school, and the stories are kind of simplistic which is ALWAYS centered around some kind of mecha/Patlabor, it is still an alright anime to watch and does have it's share of funny and dramatic moments.

| the overall of this anime is that it quiet good, the story line base on the a girl riding big robot, ( nothing like gundam)
going around beating up other robot and saving people. like any police show this 1 is quite good. onli some certain people can ride this robot , good candidate

| Having watched the third Patlabor movie 2 years ago wasnt the most appropriate introduction to that franchise.
Since this series was a turning point for M.Oshii's career and I appreciate his work a lot I had to give this series a look too, though he doesnt have here an active part as in the later OVA and movies.
First I clarify that I despise mecha and I'll never watch anything Gundam related. Maybe I'll give older titles such as Ideon, Votoms, Mazinger or Orguss a look but overall mecha animes arent that interesting.
But I was always wondering why there was such a ruckus about titles like Evangelion, Rahxephon and Gundam when those series turned very mediocre at some points, while the Patlabor franchise remained relatively unpopular.
Just as Ideon influenced Evangelion in the atmosphere and the settings, Patlabor precedes Evangelion in character developement. I have to say perhaps this is one of the best characters to appear in mecha. Action scenes involving characters are few but sometimes a viewer needs to pay attention to other factors in a TV series, that are ignored or put aside, especially in the more recent mechas.
the series will not dissapoint the viewers who want good and memorable characters. From the reviews and comments I read and from the first episodes already I knew that I would like the series.
It has that You're Under Arrest feeling but what made this more appealing was that it felt like a mecha version of Urusei Yatsura. I had watched only the second movie of UY but it reminded me a lot of it in some points.
Problem is that 5-6 episodes are mediocre, as is to be expected from a 47 episode series. But overall this is a solid title
Another problem is that (with the exception of some episodes regarding Griffin) this feels like a comedy/slice of life mecha. But it is better to watch a well directed comedy/slice of life mecha instead of a mediocre and darker one (and they're abundant today). So if you look for a darker title there's Evangelion or the Patlabor movies.
I havent read the manga to know how serious the story was there.
Graphics and sound are typical 80's. Since the series was produced with a low budget and managed to be a success I cant complain.
OP and ED were memorable, though dont expect to be thrown from your seat.
The story settings are interesting and in the OVAs and movies (and in the 22 volume manga I guess) they're better explained. The fact that the characters dont have to face soldiers from an alien empire or mad scientists but just ordinary people who use various labors intended for work gives this series an air of uniqueness.
The characters from the first to the last are memorable and it takes around 8-10 episodes to get to know them and like them (with the exception the Griffin brat). You will not find such characters very often. Of course to like and appreciate them you have to see many clicheed mecha titles first.
For those who appreciate the oldies this title is a gem. And if you hate mecha then this title should be your last resort in order to show any appreciation for the genre as it occured to me. It combines elements from other genres, most mechas wouldnt dare to show so as not to alienate their fans.
If you havent seen Evangelion yet, better watch the oldies first in order to make comparisons and not turn into a blind admirer.

| Although it's an older anime, this can capture the heart of anyone who enjoys adventure, truth and overall justice. While each episode isn't that memorable, asa whole Patlabor is one that all should see.

| Patlabor is a very unique show in the way it develops, it has a mecha-based idea, but surprisingly it isn't much about the mecha at all.
The story revolves around the members of the Sepecial Vehicles Section 2, a part of the police force that specializes on Labor enforcement, and combat labor related crimes (labors are the mecha).
In contrast to most mecha shows, the labors are common and are mostly used for construction purposes, and they aren't the end-all-be-all of the show, just tools for people to do their jobs.
IMHO, the best trait of this show is it's loveable cast of quacky, yet realistic characters, you follow the members of SV2 through their daily lives, some days are dangerous and action packed, some relaxing and lazy, but all of them are days of their job.
The cast consists of Noa, an energetic and positive, yet not very mature chick who loves labors; Asuma, Noa's backup, somewhat intelligent also immature and heir to a huge labor company; Kanuka a NY transfer, has beuty, intelligence and power, and seems cold at first yet she's actually a kind person; Shinshi the married, geeky one; Hiromi the kind giant; Ohta a gun crazy cop; the last one to join Lt. Kumagami, a beutiful top police officer on the job that faints whenever she sees "ghosts" or creepy animals; the two commanders, Gotoh, deciptively smart and manipulative yet really funny in a way, and Shinobu, beutiful, smart and by the books , yet firm to her convictions; and finally, the crew maintenance guys, Sakaki, the God of mechanics and Shige his apprentice.
Being such a long series, all these characters get the spotlight at some time, and the younger ones mature a great deal.
This show is mostly episodic, the stories are moslty self contained yet there are a few continuing plots through the show and they are all pretty good.
The comedy is great and you'll laugh a lot with the slice-of-life and the Labor related situations, the action is mostly labor-related yet cool, and the characters development is top notch; it's really refreshing watching, normal, grown up people try to do their jobs, have fun and integrate into a close knit group of comrades.
The animation, being and old TV show, seems dated, yet the desings are nice and animation is always consistent, the music is adequate with some catchy op-songs and nice accompanying tracks.
In the end despite it's age, this is a very enjoyable show, it's quite relaxed most of the time, and for the price you can get it it's a bargain.
The main selling points are the loveable cast, as well as the realistic environment th e show takes place, and when the story goes political and deep, the plot is great; also, watch follow up OVAs, and the superb movies.

| I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed this anime. I've been trying to open myself up to watching anime that haven't been created recently and Patlabor was one of the older series I decided to watch. I did not expect the animation to be as solid and appealing as it turned out to be. I think it was the opening sequence that really sold me on the character designs. None of the designs are over the top, so you get a sense of a down to earth type of storyline. The opening and closing songs are catchy enough and actually quite enjoyable once you get used to them. If you are expecting flashy looking mecha designs and some kind of deep meaningful storyline you're going to be disappointed. Patlabor's main focus is on the character development and how the different personalities bounce off each other. Patlabor is what Dai-Guard tried to be but failed miserably. If you don't need philosophical ramblings, elaborate mecha battles and colorful character designs to feel entertained you will enjoy this show.

| This one just felt too average for a mecha type of anime. It rarely had its good moments for a Patlabor series, the action is mostly favored on this one. I thought the story was a little bland on some areas. I usually don't expect it to have a great deal of a plot, since it's a comedy type and was just had less for anything that would have some value to the whole thing. The characters weren’t as great as I thought they would be, involving their roles were just too predictable as the good guys during the time. I can only recommend this for those who mostly are into the sci-fi/comedy genre.

| The animation is very well drawn, especially the robots and vehicles of the anime.
The characters are also a lovable lot, with a large variety of personalities.
Although there're a few episodes with stupid plots, it's still a very enjoyable animation.

| Well its very good-considering the time it was released. It is still fun to watch even though I have seen it around the 90's. The ending song is great especially midnight blue.
This anime is great for using robots to help fight crime, but the way the police stores the robot, in old buildings, not high tech. Using desk makes me wonder if they just tend to mix reality with fantasy. Its not that appealing.
