Many people complain that Digimon is a Pokemon rip off, but the basic premise is original for a KIDS science fiction anime. You can't be expecting it to be incredibly violent or intense, but it does it's job in entertaining it's target audience and constructing a wonderful Digital World.

I imagine the locations for the digital world would have taken ages to design. Every episode the characters encounter a new enemy and location with its own disturbing properties: dodgy telephones, an empty hotel, underneath sewers, factories.... You have all sorts of incredibly interesting locations. Each episode has it's own unique atmosphere, which goes over the heads of most kids, but you've got to give the animators credit for what they've created.

Those hundreds of Digimon needed to be designed- how the animators managed to make each place and Digimon distinct and different from one another is fantastic. It's hard to say what category the ideas would go under in reviewing an anime. I think I'll be generous.

Overall: the ideas are phenomenal. You remember each digimon, each situation, even if an episode bores or disturbs the pants off you. It's remarkable to think a kids show has so much effort put into it. Although the sound and animation could be better- the atmosphere of each episode, the premise and the characters STICK WITH YOU.

The anime could be made into an adult story with the internal conflicts each character goes through- add a little blood- but it's a kids show- it's made to look innocent and 'cool'. Although surprisingly, some of the episodes have a dark, disturbing feel. As a child I didn't really like the darker episodes as much as the lighter ones (it was unknown to me why at the time), but it gives older viewers something to appreciate.

The creators need an award. Seriously.

I watched this series when I was ten. It was awesome. I got hooked. I bought the digivice and card game, but got bored of them. The series still rocked. It had some funny points. I thought they could've made this for the adult audience if they wanted to. That would've been great: add a little romance, more violence, etc. Watch it once a week and it will entertain you.

I admit it: I used to compare this to Pokemon and thought this sucked, but I still kept watching this show. In ways, it is better than Pokemon, but my bias prevented me in doing so.

It is only unfortunate that they aired this AFTER Pokemon started, so the waves of angry fanboys pretty much raped this show. Nevertheless, the concept of Digimon (saving the Digi-world via going in as anti-virus sorta things with digi-creatures called Digimon) was fresh in the midst of the dot-com bust. This show is basically a promotion of the more popular Digi-device Tamagachi-style toy (outta style by now...) but contains a pretty good storyline without the rampant plot twist that was the 80+ episodes of Pokemon. This thing has an ENDING thank you storyboard directors.

The 7 "Digi-destined" kids go into the digi-world via some mysterious phenomenon, meet their pet Digimon, and go on adventures through the net ridding it of "evil" Digimon and the viral likes. If you get killed, you get deleted. At the half-way mark or so, a PLOT TWIST occurs - it almost made me drop this show, but thankfully, the new "8th digi-destined" was a cute-enough character with a cute-enough Digimon to keep me hooked. With fantastic story work, the new overwhelming plot pulls through and starts to climb towards an exciting climax. Though I can't recall exactly what climax it was, it was certainly exciting and came to a satisfying end.

The characters were like-'em-or-hate-'em, especially concerning Mimi - she was a bitch. All 7 friends work together in nearly every episode in constructive teamwork to solve various Digi-problems and help each other in the toughest of times. When they finally came out of the Digi-world, returning to their homes and reuniting again was another emotional ride; Digimon coming into the real world was really illogical, but it was exciting at the same time.

In any case, Digimon was teh shtuff back in 1999. Since Digimon seasons are DISTINCT with different stories and characters, this might be worth your time. Unfortunately, I didn't like the idea of having different characters in the same universe at the time, so I dropped it immediately after the first episode of season 2 (and thus I lost interest in Digimon). Again, great stuff back then, nostalgic memories nowadays.

I liked this Digimon series when I was younger. In my opinion it is far better than the other Digimon series'. I think it doesn't get all the credit that it is worth.

Animation - I thought that it was just plainly average for 1999. Most animes that were created in 99' really didnt have creation. Thats why I give it the average 7.

Sound - I thought it was ok for the dub the seemed to fit pretty good with the characters. I did notice that the voice acting sometimes did feel like they were not trying to show emotion.

Story - Well I liked it. Its pretty original seeing that I haven't yet to see another anime about saving the dital world. I thought it was very cool seeing that tehy had to defeat the evil digimon tosave the world. Allthough it is repetitive.

Characters - they were plainly average. There were so many. Each human character can make their digimon partner digivolve in their own way. They got hope, reliability, bravery frienship, love, and more but it only works with their digimon. The character design seemed that all that was different from eachother was their hair and clothes other than that their the same. They are pretty annoying at times.

Value - If you want to rwatch I suggest watch one episode a week. that way you won't get bored of it. I like the series a lot Its very enjoyable.

theres a reason why this anime is good. its because of expectations. you CANT compare this anime to animes like cowboy bebop, etc. its just not fair, the age range is not the same. also you CANT compare this anime to pokemon for the opposite reason. pokemon, i can say confidently, SUCKS. the main reason is because team rocket is a failure of an enemy and that the story is mediocre. this is where digimon owns.
admittedly, theres really only two ways you 'll like the anime as much as me. either #1, you don't have a lot of anime exposure. or #2, you've been a digimon fan as a kid. rewatching this series blew away my expectations; i was honestly expecting crap, but what i got was something good. it actually deals with believable issues, such as adoption, jealousy, quarrel, emotinality, and regret. its just very impressive.
not only that, but the characters is the best part of the anime. they all contain their own pesronality, and personally, i find all of them to be interesting people with depth (although i find mimi a little bit annoying).
nows lets be frank to summarize my main points:
a) no this isn't a good anime like elfen lied, etc. but its enjoyable for sure. so really i don't recommend it to people who want a quality anime on par to cowboy bebop
b) BUT its definetely awesome and i love it perosnally. it won me over because it blew me away with its storyline.
c) theres one trick about why this anime is rated so low and i think its beacuse of the way it runs. for example, it starts nice and then starts stalling forever. the middle (when they are in the digiworld) is nothing really spectacular; but what you don't expect is that its actualy setting up the character development and digimon backgrounds. AFTER THEY GO BACK TO THE REAL WORLD, the anime goes from an ok-anime to a really good one, and you start FEELING for the characters. when they threw in the parents, i was really imprssed because most 'monster' type storylines involve when the kids 'hide' their adventures from their parents. in this anime, the parents join the kids together.

overall: this anime is good, and owns pokemon by 10000%. but it'll only impress if u have the right mindset. by no means watch this if you're gonna be critical or have smoehting else thats better to watch. but if ur a digimon fan or young, you'll love this. sonic x, is an example of an anime made for younger viewers that just SUCKS. this doesn't. it rocks

All in all, a very average anime that is quite similar to Pokemon. Having said that, it is actually quite exaggerated to say that Digimon is a "Pokemon Clone".

Pretty much among the underrated anime and not to mention being the subject of the pathetic lame excuse of comparison with Pokemon which IMO again is pathetically lame.

On the anime, Digimon pretty much interested me in a way that it has a storyline although it does use the typical save the world and stuff, but nonetheless it had one and I guess I could say it was sort of mediocre, but with nice characters that each had their own background is what made up for the so-so storyline. Not to mention that the battle scenes were done well and also the idea of multiple evolutions like each Digimon have their darkside. Another thing is that the music in the anime was pretty good especially the opening.

Note: This review is based on the original Japanese production, and not the shipwreck that Bandai smashed up with a sledgehammer and pasted back together. Also, there are no comparisons to the anime Pokemon, as the two are in no way related to each other, whether in inspiration/improvision or in creation.

I've had a long experience with Digimon. I had been a very short fan of the show, and my first exposure to it was when I was five. The thing that lured me to watch the show was the fact that I shared the name of one of the characters: Takeru (of course, the name was only mentioned once in the dub, in episode one where it was introducing characters). That interest in the show didn't last long. When I turned nine, I turned on the TV one morning and saw one episode of season 4 and got sucked right in. So after someone told me that Bandai ruins everything that comes in from Japan, I decided to see how badly they ruined the first season and downloaded a few episodes in Japanese.

I watched it. I enjoyed it. I downright loved it. And as you may want to see, this review is pretty long.

Unfortunately I've only seen the dubbed version. What's required to enjoy this series is getting past the repetitive storyline and into the deeper parts of the anime. I've seen all the "Digimon" series, and this is my favorite of all of them.

Now, a lot have said that this is just like "Pokémon". In fact, the only similarity is that in both anime, the kids have "monsters" that can evolve. But even the evolution is different. For example, Digimon can only evolve if well-fed and only stay in their evolved forms for a certain amount of time. Pokémon can evolve after gaining enough battle experience and stay evolved forever. Other than that, "Pokémon" and "Digimon" are completely different and should not be compared.

a kind of pokemon + with some science-fiction articles = Horrivle!

Digimon, based in the cute "virtual monters" also called "Tamagochi",that who you need to take care, that who you ignore him,he dies.

to me digimon is a ridiculous form of Pokémon, but different of pokémon, the creator of Digimon, use correctly the limits of episodes.

Overral_This anime is hateable, have more drama, than comedy, naturally a touching drama, but the kind of Drama is made for kids, idiotic, pathetic anime.

Well I have seen this anime on lithuanian TV. It's nearly a rule that a show, which airs on our TV is destined to be horrible. Digimon Adventure is no exception.

Actually I have some friends, who are not into anime simply because they've seen Digimons at their early age. Seriously, if an annoying cast of characters wouldn't be enough the story of the show is downright pathetic. Kids fighting for world's future is bad enough, but giving them speaking low-iq beasts as weapons is too much.

I could only recommend this show to children about 3 - 9 years old. They might relate to the characters of the show. On the other hand, anybody older - please stay away, that's for your own's good.

This anime will be criticised and misunderstood by many because of its obvious influence from Pokemon but it is actually better than it. The monsters have a personality, the enemies are more interesting and the story flows better and doesn't get as boring as each digimon is given some time to grow as the character develops. Pretty good overall when all that is taken into account.

Er...yeah. So...you hear of this anime, see some pictures and all you think is... POKEMON CLONE! Well, it is not exactly it... although you have kids, you have beasts and said beasts fight for kids mentioned above.

But, the plots have some diferences, and well Digimon's storyline is better... not much better but still.

The animation is not very good. It is too bright and the backgrounds are terrible.

The characters are...well...kids; one or two are annoying and whiny.

I don't see the point of wasting time with Digimon. Even if it is one of the best animes of the genre kids-and-games/cyber-pets/cards.

I loved digimon, I am writing this review having seen the first season and second and a bit of the third before it all went pear shaped.

The story was really interesting. A bit like power rangers, and other level up anime, but just much better, if you are one of those wondering which is better – digimon or pokemon, I’d have to go with digimon.

The CG aside, the animation of this was great, not excellent but still great. The sound was good as well, though again, not excellent, but it did do its job and was very appropriate as it work well with the story and what’s happening.

You can be rather bored watching about 4 or 5 or sometimes even more transformations of the digital monsters per episode for 20 episodes, and those were what I hated. It was okay to see it for 3 or 4 times, but having to see it again for the 20th time just bores anyone to death.

It worked the cliffhanger scenario well into each episode, I was really excited to know what happened next, which gave me the same feeling with dragonball, each fight is NOT as long (lol), but some of them were quite long, still you easily forgive them to try to buff up the episode a bit and extend the time. It was the predictable kind of story, but somehow, it was just still very interesting.

Sadly, the longer it dragged out, it worse it got, after the first gang of digi-destines (kids that went into the digital world) was off the screen and the new kids filled their place, this has, to me, lost all its excitement and interest.

one of the first anime i ever seen . when i saw it at the first time i liked it . well , it was because i was younger then , but even now i appreciate this anime (NOT).
at the first look you can say "hey , it's like pokemon. there are trainers with monsters which can develop to bigger and stronger forms". but after you see it , it is quite different . the monsters can return to their original form , there are two worlds; the digi world and the real world , not like in pokemon , that there is a world which is combined with pokemons and real ppl . more is the plot , characters etc. but let's talk about digimon , after all i'm writing a review on digimon anime , not pokemon .
so , the animation isn't good . sometimes there are evem combinations between some kind of 3D and normal draws , and those two aren't going well together. the plot isn't new or original , it's old and known plot ; bad ppl do something bad the good ppl do something good to stop the badness of the bad man. but hey , it's for little kids , it's supposed to be simple . so i won't compalin about the plot .
he. characters- non .can't talk , they aren't supposed to develop ~kids show~!.
overall , this anime is designed for the little kids , if you are over 13 , don't watch it , if you below than 13 , do whatever you like.

(*NOTE* This review applies for the 1st and 3rd season of Digimon only)

Most people would say that shows like digimon and pokemon are what seperate the true anime fans from the fake ones who just go along with ever new fad and try to fit in. And in a way there right, but comparing digimon to pokemon just cuz they end in "mon" is really unfair. These are two COMPLETELY different shows and digimon is so much better. In the first season they makers did a good job of showing the characters beliefs and motivations. Also, as the story progressed the characters gained more powers through learning new moreals and becasue of that their digimon partners gained new stages in power. Yeah it sounds like a kidshow, but just like "Meowy" says, if you watch it with an open mind then you'll most likely watch it. The fight scences are cool and the monsters look ferocious in their later stages instead of some pikachu looking "cute" piece of crap. The villians are malicious and actually do kill other digimon (which is a huge plus). And if you don't think that this is like most other anime's, just watch the end of season three and I promise that you won't be dissapointed. With all this said, digimon does have it's pros and cons
PROS:
1. Cool fights (specially Season3)
2. Semi-Devoloped charcters
3. Cool looking evolved stages
4. Powerfull and ruthless villians.
5. Pretty funny at somes points

CONS:
1. OVERUSE OF BAD PUNS
2. Annoying rookie level digimon
3. The failure of the second season
4. Sparatic Music
5. Annoying main character (Tai)

All in all, it's not bad and worth at least a try. Really, dont just say that every kid looking show is pokemon.

Seven kids at summer camp are unexpectedly transported by "digivices" to a colorful and enigmatic world. Lost and alone, they are befriended by small digital monsters, Digimons. The kids and their Digimon partners quickly become inseparable, and the little creatures guide their human friends through the wondrous DigiWorld, protecting them from the hordes of evil Digimons. The group soon discovers that some of the giant Digimons they encounter are not evil Digimons but good Digimons gone bad. A dark power is corrupting even the most gentle of Digimons by embedding Black Gears into them, turning them into vicious monsters. Creating chaos and destruction wherever it goes, the evil power threatens all of DigiWorld.

As they try to find their way back home, the seven kids are drawn further and further into the mystery. Through teamwork and trust, they help their newfound Digimon friends digivolve from "monsters in training" to giant champions that must save the DigiWorld from the powerful evil intent on destroying it.

With an unbreakable bond between them, the kids and their Digimon companions embark on the adventure of a lifetime

My opinion:

Digimon is older then Pokemon, but the series not. Before Digimon there was a tamagochi like thingy that you could raise your own monster. Digimon was born. Only after the succes of Pokemon they decided to make the series, the series was pretty popular in it's time but now they have drained everything out of it. Enough about the history, let's talk about the series. The serie itself is another monster fighting anime, now the fighting happens in a digital world and the monsters can evolve back and forth to different monsters. They have to save the world of great evil, yet another boring storyline. And it is boring, it's fun to see once a while but after season 1 the series transformed into utter garbage.

The characters of season 1 were ok, you had a nice cast and they fit together as a team. Nothing much to say about them really. However the characters of the other seasons are really boring and not thought out. They are just younger versions of the characters of season 1. As I said before they drained everything out of it , untill there is nothing left to watch ...

First of all, Digimon is NOT a Pokemon rip-off, as a matter of fact the toy line came out in Japan before Pokemon even came out as a game.

The show perfectly fits its nitch aimed at little kids to buy all their stuff, so can't expect that much of a complicated story or expect everyone to die as in Eva or Gundam, you don't expect a 10 year old to understand the whole angels/human complementation project or the whole political issues of those shows.

Remember, kids show == ploy to sell merchandise, no matter from what country it is. So while not the best jaw dropping show from Japan, it ain't the worst (still can't forgive Transformers Armada!!!).

As said before this is one of those you love or hate shows.

I don't doubt that this anime was just a commercial ploy for money, especially now there there has been something like 3 new seasons out?
But, the original anime was still good. The characters were so likeable and even running on the tail of pokémon provided entertainment. Granted, most people probably shouldn't bother taking time out to watch it but to sit down after school and watch this while doing homework was golden.
