| Based on 6 volumes:
To those who have seen the anime already: Okay, the anime follows the novel more closely. Whereas NHK the manga follows a different route. Both are different, although they have similar events that overlap.
Sadly, NHK isn't the same without its catchy music and animation. Whereas the anime had the ability to amaze the audience with its special effects, sound effects, etc.... For example, I was really amazed by the full blown animation of Tatsuhiro's interaction with the MMORPG. However, in the manga, it skips over all the action scenes, and merely focuses on the more depressing story aspects. The manga focuses more on the story of the pitiful life of a hikkikomori. This would be okay, if the story was worth following but...
It gets all philosophical with panels after panels of people littering the pages with their sorrow and difficulties. All this self-lamenting about their problems, with almost no real hope in sight. Furthermore, the story doesn't even seem to go anywhere. If you want to 'study' fictional character problems, then read NHK. If you want something gripping, amazing, heart-wrenching, emotional or whatever stories... avoid this crap.
NHK is not worth reading for the story alone. Always depressing/dark and doesn't seem to progress anywhere productively. The art is kind of lacking aside from the nude scenes or sexually explicit scenes where Tatsuhiro has some random fantasy about one of the girls. Overall, I had high hopes for this manga because of the entertainment value and just the sheer effort put into the anime, but NHK the manga disappoints.
