| You could get cavities watching this anime. Although through much of the show I could not stand Tsubasa for many reasons(her indecisiveness, constant timidness, fear of making very very ordinary decisions), I think the last ten minutes of this anime changed my mind. A ton of the relationship between Tsubasa and Hikaru came off as incredibly cheesy to me at first, but after you remind yourself that that the two are only ten years old it's a little easier to swallow. It's innocence in it's purest form and while at times it was irritating, I believe it was a sort of jealousy on my part.
The animation was great and the music likewise. Characters, while they were not all likeable, they were well done. It's not the kind of show you would watch again, but I could see myself replaying the ending because it was just that great. Sad, but great. The action wasn't bad at all either.
I think this anime calls for a little reading between the lines. There are a lot of issues about love, friendship and development from a person that relies on other people to one that relies on him/herself that make this anime the great show that it is. So, yeah, it was great and I'd recommend it to anyone with the time to watch it.

| What is friendship? How strong is it? Can there be true friendship between human and a human-like machine?
When watching Figure 17 I couldn't comprehend what audience is this show for. There are a lot of action scenes where kind of sexy heroine fights against huge and gross aliens. Yet the majority of a show is about a young girl who is still going to the elementary school and her inability to make friends. At the same time I can't believe this show would be intended for elementary school kids either, as it's much more complex than, let's say Card Captor Sakura. I doubt it's intended for teens though as I couldn't find a single thing appealing to them here in this show. If this show is not for parents who want to understand their still little introverted children better, then, I must say I ran out of ideas what is it for. Either way, even while Figure 17 is a pretty well done show, I could do nothing, but see myself falling out of its really narrow audience.
It's really hard to recommend this show, I have no idea what audience is it for. If you are a parent, you might find something to like there, but I guess you'll be turned off by the lame action fights.

| (Anime Coalition fansubs. Very good translation, though there were some issues with sound and picture quality but who cares. Title not licensed in my area anyway and never will)
I came across this title one month ago by chance, when one reviewer mentioned it in the review of another anime. It isnt a coincidence that non-mainstream titles, whether anime or anything else are instantly becoming my favorites.
Now to describe this title would be a little weird, since I havent seen anything similar. Consider it a mix of Niea_7, a darker and more realistic version of Card Captor Sakura without the sugary stuff and add a little of Astro Boy too when it comes to the fight scenes involving a 10 year old child.
Initially when I saw 10 year olds as the main characters I thought this would turn like CCS and if that was the case I wasnt planning in watching it. But fortunately it has similarities with CCS only in the design of the main characters. Everything else is so realistically done and the slice of life parts are so enjoyable that I was amazed by how such good parts would be combined with mediocre alien hunting scenes. The anime is memorable thanks to the characters. No other anime can feature voice actors and actresses doing 10 year olds in such an enchanting way. Sometimes I couldnt believe how well the voice actors were. Some scenes were so realistic that they were hilarious or tragic depending on the situation. I've read that Tsubasa's voice actress is a certified nanny , so no wonder she had the chance to observe chidren and their behaviour.
Also no other anime made me feel so sad after the ending of one episode (particularly ep. 9). The situation was so normally and realistically adapted on animation in a way no other anime could have done. The children's characterization is the best part of the anime and also the daily life moments in the farm, where the children help their family in various tasks and learn about the harsh and pleasant facts of life.
As for the adults they act as secondary characters and that helps in making the children even more impressive characters. It is a good thing that I could identify Tsubasa and Hikaru, even if they didnt speak.
The other half of the anime features alien hunting. For the first 6 episodes where the aliens were different, this was overall interesting. But after that where the same alien with enhanced abilities reappears it turns boring, except the final episode. Problem is that the slice of life part and the alien hunting part do not interconnect at all. That is the biggest plot hole. So many explosions and vast areas turn to ashes, yet none of the authorities intervene. Only funny part were Tsubasa's reactions as she was inside the Figure. In the alien hunting respect there better animes though in the slice of life respect this is of the best and most original animes. Though it could get boring if only slice of life episodes were featured. But it is certain that it would be unwatchable if it was only about alien hunting. The final episode gave a satisfying and fitting ending though.
Animation was decent and the childrens reactions were magnificent. The school facilities and the childrens occupations were very convincing. Especially the theater play, that was hilarious. Also the rural settings and the farm were nice. The battle scenes werent anything worth remembering, though the last episode had action like in a videogame (Contra anyone?). The aliens after ep. 6 are totally uninspiring. Probably the budget wouldnt suffice to animate anything new. Despite the good adapting of the aliens in the battle, they still were defeated in the same way again and again
As for the sound, some nice BGM was used but since it is a slice of life, mainly the voices and daily life sfx are heard. Also the battle music was nice, though if the aliens are uninspiring it doesnt help.
Overall I'd recommend this title since it combines action and slow pace effectively. Of the underrated titles, yet with the best childrens characterization in anime (no it doesnt reach the level of Iranian movies). In a time where the only animes and cartoons with little girls that get attention are Card Captor Sakura and Powerpuff Girls, I understand why this anime will remain in the shelves for a long time.

| In this anime we can see how Tsubasa (very shy 10 y.o. girl with some complex) become
stronger with help of her friend Hikaru. Most significant part of anime is
showing of Tsubasa's and Hikaru's life. Them every day's duties and problems.
It's very simple for adult's value but it can be difficult for Tsubasa to solve
it. And Hikaru (like mother) help her. Added to everything else there is
horrible monsters which Tsubasa HAVE TO fight but she is only 10 years old
girl..
Anime cantains some funny and relieve moments, but it also contain painful
things like death.. So, it may make you cry..
But do not be very sad, the end is happy ^^

| Tough i'm not a fan of Sci-fi, and alien-killing actions, this anime really got me...Why? Beacause it's about a little girl, who's just like any normal girls, no, she's even 'weaker' than normal, in many aspects.
And she didn't only received some powers she has to use, but she has to deal with savage aliens...
Oh, and the story focuses on her, and her 'counterpart', Hikaru! ^^ I liked both girls very much, and the edgy situations in their personal lives (which were somehow related to their 'mission') were awesome!!!
Overall, this anime was touching, and somehow heart-warming; the sci-fi part was only some kind of 'side-story'...

| Figure 17 was kind of hard to get into at the beginning. The beginning of each episode has really, really slow pacing and deals with the whole life aspect as Tsubasa and Hikaru deal with the every day problems of school life and others.
However, this beginning "life-focused" part is the anime's strongest part as the fighting scenes are probably the worst I've ever seen. Not only are the movements and animation so plain and boring, but the underlying framework of the 6 magyua seeds kind of take the focus away from this fighting/action portion. They are mere numbers that will eventually be defeated rather than the goal of the anime. The action scenes take a back seat in this anime and it is a portion that I could have done without.
My favorite part of this anime would be the opposing personalities differences between Tsubasa and Hikaru where one is extremely energetic and one is cutely shy. As Tsubasa ( the original one) gradually learns to grow up with Hikaru as almost a role model and motivator. I was especially moved by the dramatic events that occured between them... characters are strong.
If you've seen a lot of anime, I wouldn't recommend watching this one. The overall make of this anime is very unoriginal and I HATE brainless/nontalking aliens, really, they're the worst subject matter because once you've seen them once you've seen them all. I agree with another reviewer that this would have been better if it focused on the relationship between Tsubasa and Hikaru.
However, if you haven't watched much in terms of a large variety of anime, this MIGHT be worth watching. I dont know who would want to see this. It has a mix of both childish school elements dramas as well as plain fighting scenes. Too slow for me! I dont know how other people liked this...

| A very good anime, gets boring sometimes but very amusing. Pretty animation and good storyline. The episodes didn't quite need to be 45 minutes... that's a bit ridiculous. I haven't seen all the episodes yet and I don't plan to, because I kinda forgot which episodes I left off on...

| Really enjoy this wonderful series. Each show run for 45 min.. and air 1 ep. per mounth. Not many ppl watch it, also if you watch only 1 ep. each you kinda forgot the beginning. Forunately I watch the R1 dvd and seem to didn't had to wait much for the next dvd to come.
The anime was great.. except the eyes. Sound was perfect for the anime, up-beat when actoin/fight scenes and breeze sound when they show the sceanary and innocent of the two heroine. The story was fine, nothing stand out. I must say I like how they plan character plot, they really thinking though out the story what they should put up first then bring up the backgroud(hint) character at the end. I recommence this to anyone who like action/fighting/bit of sci-fi, even thou the story mostly show about young childeren.. the action scenes will make up for it :) Also you should watch this in 1 batch or atleast buy the dvd. It's good and you know it!

| Figure 17 was quite enjoyable to watch, which was suprising as I havent heard very much about this title before. The sci-fi story of tsubasa and hikaru is very well done and never drags. The 45minute episodes are used to their fullest and let us see multiple sides of the main and supporting characters that you might not normally be exposed to with standard-lenght episodes. Figure 17 blends a monster-of-the-week type storyline with day to day drama very well. This could really be a sci-fi kokoro library or to heart as someone previously mentioned.
All in all this was a great watch. Very pleased.

| Figure 17 is really an underrated Anime. If I were to describe it in one word it would be "awesome." This anime has a nice balance between sci-fi action, and plain drama. I could describe Figure 17 a sci-fi version of Kokoro Library or Whisper of the Heart.
Figure 17 is the first Anime I've ever given a 10 for story. Maybe I'm biased towards sci-fi, but this Anime crafted the idea very well. There are nice contrasts between the characters Hikaru and Tsubasa along with great character development. Though some parts of the Anime seemed a bit slow or uneventful, I found those portions to be the nice meaningful times. The characters grow deeper within those scenes as you watch these characters live their lives.
However, for those who love only action, you may find this series a bit disappointing because of the ample focus on drama and school life. This Anime is as much as a "slice-of-life" Anime as it is a sci-fi Anime.
This is one of the few Animes in which the ending is good. Though bitter-sweet, Figure 17 turned out to be one of those few Animes that I've turly felt satisfied with, and that is when an Anime is "awesome."
I would highly recommend Figure 17 to anyone who likes a nice balance of drama and action.

| Watched this last year and loved it. Great drama and character development. Intermingles shounen and shoujo elements in a good mix. The interaction between the two main characters is very well written, and is up there with many other drama anime I've watched over the years. It's a bit sad that this went by unnoticed (I hardly ever found anyone mentioning it back in '01-02), but apparently it was good enough to be liscensed.
Each episode is 45 minutes long, and usually dedicates the first half to the drama part and the second half to the action scenes. Needless to say, the first half are the ones I found the most enjoyable.
The story progresses in a steady manner and never really leaves any room for needless fillers. The ending is ... well... I'll leave it up to you to judge that, and the series as a whole. Nevertheless, this is one of my all-time favourite series. Recommended.

| I watched this right after I saw Aquarian Age. I found a single similarity. They both seem to have two story plots weaving together, one being something that might happen in reality, the other is sci fi. Unlike Aquarian Age, this one pulls it off very well.
The series runs a little slowly in some parts, maybe because all the episodes are 40 some minutes long, but I found that even during those parts, I was glued to the screen. They have a way of storytelling that makes the mundane seem interesting. They clearly stressed the importance of the roles the characters played, because I got a sense for each one that partly buried itself into my heart. The children are very endearing.
Another thing that caught my attention was the fact that each ep had some sort of highly applicable life lesson. You don't see that much often in anime, so it surprised me.

| Truly an excellent series, and quite remarkable in that it is one of few that have actually made me cry.
A touching storyline and rather unusual combination of elements (sci-if, mahou shoujo, drama, and action) serve to make this series a rather unique experience.

| At the time this review was originally written Figure 17 had the dubious honor of having been shelved for a later date than any anime on my computer except for Saikano(which I felt was an unrelenting assault on good taste).
The 45 minute format is deadly because the shoujo portion of the daily routine starts the episode and is slow and pretty boring. Worse, it takes up the majority of the show, at least 30 minutes of each episode, enough to put me in a near-coma state by the end. After watching about 3-4 hours of this, I couldn't go on. Specifically, the dialogue seems especially lacking, and maybe that's why there's so little of it. Maybe there's supposed to be some kind of empathic bond between all the characters so they don't have to talk much, but it sure makes things dull, eh? Then I'm jarred out by the transition to a monster of the week fight, which in and of itself is fairly well animated, but lacks any sort of intensity, which is just wrong from any viewpoint. Overall, neither portion of "shoujo" or "shonen" stand up particularly well compared to others in their genre.
But it doesn't end there. It cannot be described how badly the two mesh together...but I'll try. The first 2/3rds a slice of life piece of the trials and tribulations of a preadolescent girl followed by an overly violent(considering what precedes it, anyway) short action piece correlating very little to the central plot. Although plot is perhaps too strong of a word for it. While there is clear conflict here with the aliens and the turmoil introduced by her alien twin, the real plot of her getting used to her new alien sister along with her father lacks substance. In the end, Figure 17 is a different sort of anime, but it is an experiment gone horribly wrong, a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde effect. The two things that differentiate it, it's "slice of life" followed by mindless action and it's 45 minute format don't help the anime, but rather make its faults all the more clear. Probably the anime would have been more successful simply focusing on the girls' relationship by itself, in my opinion.
Frankly, for me, watching some horrible bastard stepchild of Kokoro Library and Devilman just isn't high on my priority list.

| A very different Anime. On one hand you have a series that deals with issues that a normal ten year old would face in their life, and on the other hand you have sci-fi bug-squishing action.
The first 3/4 of each show are the daily events. These are slow, and can be emotional. The last 1/4 of each show is fighting.
The fighting is ok, but if that is all you care about, I wouldn't touch this Anime.
The drama aspect of this Anime is well done though.
Give it a shot, I think this Anime is definately worth seeing.
Much better (and different) than most Anime you will see out there.

| An animation with each episode approx 45 min long, that's amazing. That's the reason why each episode of the anime I watched gave a "funny but refreshing" feel to me. A 25 min and 45 min per episode anime makes such a difference that the viewer will have to "see it to feel the difference."

Do not expect a lot of fighting scene as this anime is about how Tsubasa cope with the sudden appearance of Hikaru.
Definitely a series worth watching.

| "Figure 17" is the most aggressive anime in Japan. Its length is twice as long as ordinary others and each episode was broadcasted monthly. In other words, it is an experimental anime. I admire it. However the aim of this anime doesn't go very well after all. And its quality is still pretty good.

| This was a fantastic anime, all the elements that have to be present for my enjoyment were there. Great story, charact6ers you cared about, and concepts that were to a certain extent, believable. I can not go into to many details without giving spoilers, but I will say that this is an anime that you could hear the whole story, and still want to see it from begining to end.
