| Video Girl Ai is also another great romance manga and a must read for fans of the genre. Havent watched the mediocre OVA but as is often the case the manga suffices.
Where to start....First of all, what impressed me was the design. Really the mangaka is an expert in drawing expressive characters. One of the best mangas in that aspect. It doesnt leave the reader uninfluenced. Also the surrounding have detail. There are of course the ecchi and nudity scenes and the manga tops in that too. Fortunately the story and characters are so good that a few ecchi scenes actually enhance the reading experience.
The sci-fi story isnt anything spectacular or original. Except that the ending was rushed the last 2 volumes were very mediocre and irrelevant to the overall story. I'd suggest skipping these.
the characters (thanks to the great design and the emotional dialog) are of the best in the romance genre. Ai, Youta, Takashi, Moemi and Youta's childhood friend who appears later in the manga are unforgettable. One of the best characterizations I've read.
ANother worthy manga and one of the best romance mangas too.

| Loved the comedy on this one, and was also involved with some the love conflict during the whole thing. Great for something I could always enjoy reading from its inside humor.

| I haven't read Video Girl Len, so the review is based on the 13 volumes.
What can I say, the design is wonderful, Masakazu Katsura is a very talented man and his character designs as well as the surroundings are splendid. I once called it a visual climax and that's nearly it :)
The plot is awesome, the twists and the way they all miss each other by chance, all those are very realistic. Because, despite the fact that Ai is a Video Girl and the stuff, this is a very realistic manga about feelings and love among them. It's not only all about sweet love, it's also about the fact that people stop loving each other sometimes or don't return each other feelings. It's beautiful.
The characters are also great, but you should see for yourself the way they grow. In the end, no one is the same again.
By the way, the ending was a little rushed. That's the only disadvantage I can think of.
You should definitely try it.

| All manga by Katsura-san are very very good. At least in design. But his characters are very annoying well, I love his characters, but they are very indecisive. However, everything else is unimaginably perfect. I recommend this manga a LOT. you will enjoy it. However, there is some nudity... so you should be 16 years or older. The story is very touching, many people could relate to the lives of these teenagers. The theme is also very beautiful and will leave you on the brink of tears.

| AAAH!! This manga was so good to read(I got glued to it for 8volumes b4 i could finally pull myself away as i remembered that i had exams the next day). Heck how the story goes is very realistic in my opinion( how the story goes is partly based on moteuchi's feelins which i think are very real in how it is in the real world ) though the ending was stereotypical =)(they all live happily together! Argh... they should have left it suspenseful and dramatic like in the anime). All in all i was very attached to the characters, feelin pain when they were and happy when they were. The manga was like a living thing to me which affected my feelings because i loved it. I'd definitely recommend to ppl to read esp those who've loved some girl wholely b4

| rain's review pretty much has this manga pinned.
The meat n' bones of this story is good. There's a lonely and depressed guy (Moteuchi) with an unrequited love who, because of this, is able to see a particular video store. He checks a video out and a girl (Ai) who is supposed to fill in the gap for a while pops out of the TV when he plays it. To make things interesting, the VCR is actually broken so the girl who comes out is not actually the girl advertised on the box. Instead it's some warped version who instead of being a sweet, kind, and gentle girl becomes a loud, obnoxious, and deviantly playful tomboy. That's the premise of the story and honestly at first it was pretty enjoyable when everything was fresh. Unfortunately things become VERY repetative as the volumes keep coming. I got a third of the way through before I stopped most of my reading and just began skimming pages to get on with the plot. The author spends way too much time with certain thoughts and beats around the bush constantly with who Moteuchi likes and whether or not he likes this person and when he does he actually likes another person, but then he like yet another person, or the first one, then back again. Confused? You should be. When you read it you'll have about a million times more of that. In summary, fifteen volumes is way too much for this series. If it had been written as a 5 volume set then I believe it would have been much more enjoyable. The art was great and pleasing to the eyes. But the story that followed it was a disappointment. I recommend it if you don't mind skipping or skimming through whole volumes to reach core points in the story. Most people would be pleased with the ending I suppose. I was if only for the reason that Moteuchi finally made up his freakin' mind.

| Wah. Wat an addictive manga. Once I started reading I just couldn't stop ( read like 4 volumes in a row). This really is a sad romance story, it's always depressin' (the mood is hardly ever up).....It's Such A Sad Game Of Tag.
I didn't seem to care for the characters as much as I did, like in Aizu. At times it felt annoyin' this manga (dunno why though), and some of the situations were kind of repetitive. Havin' read Aizu before Video Girl Ai it seems that Ichitaka and Youta are similar in many ways. They're both wimps (lack courage), and have continuing swaying emotional conflicts.
Dunno why they orignially called him 'dateless'?

| I thought the first two volumes were fairly interesting, but after that the manga quickly degenerates into one big mess. You can easily see that the author originally plans for only 2 volumes of this.
The plot has two main ideas
1) Make up melodramatic stuffs
2) Show of the girls' body
The manga got stuck somewhere between these two things. The story's so cliche that it's laughable. The ero scenes are also a turn-off because of the boring story involved. Video girl Ai is overlong, overly-melodramatic, and stretches way too far beyond its reach.
I can see no redeeming qualities to this mess. Katsura's just not skilled enough to do multi-dimensional love story. He's better off writing more straight-forward ones like I''s (not that it's bad).

| This "Hi no Tori" is crazy! Video girl is a manga with the worst character i ever seen! The manga sounds wonderfull in the 3 first vols, but than the story turns into a bunch of repetitive cliches. really really sux... I read all of the vols just to end the collection that i have begun. Run from this depressive work of the ecchi/romantic master masakazu Katsura.

| First manga I've ever read, its "ok" type of romance manga.
I haven't finished it because I couldn't find any more. I only read up to the 9th volume or so.
Drawing is nice, and the story is a good romance story.(kind of awkward tho)
Worth buying :)

| I don’t think I’ve ever read a manga that covers so much ground in just 13 books (volumes 14 and 15 concerns another video girl, Len, seven or eight years into the future). And I have not felt this moved by a work for quite some time now. Video Girl Ai is not flawless either: nudity is not always tastefully done, there are a few disturbing scenes (and I’m not talking about the attempted rape), and one cannot help but wonder whether there would have been fewer people hurt had Ai not materialised in the first place. All that aside, what Katsura Masakazu has created here is a wonderfully heartrending work about teen romance, which would go on to inspire other works, and is also very much superior to his more recent I’’s. While I''s often had a contrived and idealistic way of resolving issues, Video Girl Ai made me really care for the characters and their plights, simply because we come to really attach ourselves to their emotional side. Video Girl Ai takes us through an almost-epic love quadrilateral, spanning a couple of trying years, that mostly did not equate from idiotic indecisiveness. It delves into philosophical issues as well as the romantic ones, and presents poignancy in rapid-fire succession (there are 3+ main relationships and 4+ side ones). One recommendation is to not let yourself hang in the final chapters; you may end up depressed for hours or even days waiting to discover the true conclusion.
SPOILER: I’m sure many readers like myself would’ve loved to see a 20-something Ai (and a kid would be nice too)! Unfortunately we only got to ‘read’ a bit of her voice, and no indication of a little-one. It was kind of expected really; it does leave us wondering nostalgically, and it removes any possibility of him screwing that up.
(By the way a 9.0 from me is very high.)

| First off - dorfl is an idiot! Read the entire manga then voice your thoughs otherwise you're an idiot. Whichever the case - you're an idiot. That said I'll start my "voice". In my humble oppinion this is the best manga I have ever read or will ever read. Not all people can relate to the story but to those who do it touches VERY DEEPLY. You will know why if you read the ENTIRE manga. Love triangles, heartbreak, sadness, joy, happiness... its got all you could ask for in a shojo manga. I've cried over and over and it will bring you to tears and make you go "doki doki" over and over. In the end you will have enjoyed what unfolds throughout and it will be the most memoriable manga(if you're like me).

| Sucks. I was very disappointed after 2 volumes. Weak story, weak characters, art isn't too bad, I didn't enjoy it at all. I can't even be bothered to write one of my usual lengthy reviews.
EDIT: Rydia, I'm not a masochist, so why should I bother to read 15 volumes of a manga which I think really, really, really sucks? Even 2 volumes was a magnificient achievement, I think I deserve a cookie.

| Incredible good manga!
Extremely good and entertaining story which varies between Romance, Action, and Comedy. And the Design and Character does a incredibly job to keep up with the story. And neither do it loses it´s edge, heck, even the "extra-Video-girls"-stories adds up and makes the story even better. Highly recommended!
One of the absolute best manga out there!
