| One of the 'macho' titles released by the grandaddy of bastardization (Viz) back in the 1990's, Mai the Psychic Girl isn't remembered and hasn't been 'action editioned' today for a reason - it's not that good.
Sure, the art is kind of gritty and cool, and it works as an escapist fantasy, but it doesn't have too much else going for it. Seemingly endless battles and running away sequences, no-dimentional characters, and a story so goddamn simple it's embarassing, Mai the Psychic Girl is something that the modern manga market wouldn't even look twice at.
But once I got into it, I found myself enjoying it, even if it did remain utterly simplistic the whole time. Usually with these governmental types tories we expect a surprise or two...but not here. Everything is taken at face value. Bottom line, if you're into old-school manga, this is for you.
