| Overall, I found this series to be somewhat disappointing. I'm reluctant to call this series cliche, since it predates a lot of other series, but regardless of release dates, it doesn't much of anything that I haven't seen before. Its biggest deficit is its failure to really go anywhere. We are introduced to a character (antagonist?) from his past, but their conflict/relationship is left wholly unresolved. The main character never really develops emotionally until about half way through the last episode, leaving him awkwardly stuck between being being a dark bad ass and a conflicted hero. Except for one surprise twist about half way through, it never really breaks out of the monster of the day format.

| Let's set the record straight: Nightwalker: The Midnight Detective, is not a terrible series as it is claimed to be. Unfortunately, it's not overwhelmingly superior either, but it does a decent job of telling its story and has likable characters to boot.
Meet Shido Tasuhiko, a full-time detective in search of demonized vampires called "Night Breeds", praying on living souls based on selfish desires or departed, lifeless shells of souls. Together with his partner Yayoi Matsunaga, a tiny green demon fairy Gumi, and a young school-girl Riho Yamasaki, they eradicate the demons in a series of episodic cases that sometimes delve into each primary character's past and present, while others choose to focus on the secondary characters more in a "slice-of-demon life" format. But each episode ultimately takes a relfective toll on each of the main characters, and that's what makes this series work as well as it does in most perspectives.
Nightwalker: the Midnight Detective is what you would get from the three-way lovechild of Detective Conan, Yami No Matsuei, and Vampire Princess Miyu. How and why would these series even compare? Well, consider the following:
In the Detective Conan/VPM comparison: this series follows a set formula of events. You have an incident of foul play/a mystery unresolved in the masses. Shido and company are on the case looking for a suspected Night Breed and reasons to why the shocking case at hand happened; deductive reasoning entails on the part of Shido and Yayoi...maybe even Riho if she's along for the ride. Shido and company make the realization, Night Breed reveals itself after some set sequence of events, and Shido whips out his (rather interesting looking) blood-sword, giving the vampire breeds their own taste of death in some vivid action sequences, though simple to some tastes. (No Hellsing animated fight sequences in this series, so if you're expecting those types of visuals, it won't be your cup of tea).
Of course, add to the fact that Shido's masking his identity as a "man of the night", fully donned during the day and an immortal vampire by the light of the moon.
The only thing remotely linking Yami No Matsuei to Nightwalker is the presence of a menacing, overbearing figure from the past. In Shido's case, Cain torments him in the memory of turning Shido to a relentless, ruthless vampire who knew nothing of the inner workings and sentiments of the human heart. Once he makes the realization, Shido makes a vow never to harm humans again, a temptation that is challenged quite a few times during the course of the series.
Overall, this series was not, by any means, a mediocre one. Animation is decent for its time (circa 1998); overall, a nice soundtrack influenced by gothic and rock undertones; interesting character development (and yes, there IS character development in this series, as I shall expand upon futher); and overall a well paced episodic plot, though not without some flawed progression. Recommended for those who like vampire lore and action series, even with a little bit of mystery and humor, as this series does a good job of leading into the villains that you may not suspect at first glance and eliciting a few laughs at the exchanges between Shido, Yayoi, Riho, and Gumi.

| I am a huge fan of vampires and vampire animes and movies, but it was a struggle and a chore to watch every episode of Nightwalker for me.
The animation was barely functional and for an anime created in 2000 seemed well behind the times.
The sound usually doesn't fit and is truthfully kind of an annoyance it is so out of place in some parts.
The characters are boring and annoying. Especially the main character Shido who exhibits no growth or depth, and comes off as both whiney and ditzy. His assistant and his little bat-creature familiar are both useless and serve no purpose to the plot except as background noise to provide Shido and his cutesy-schoolgirl intern Riho people to talk to. Speaking of Riho, she is the only semi-interesting character of the bunch, with the only real depth of any of them, but even she fails to evoke much emotion or concern for her person.
The story was a complete bore, and besides the fact that the whole "blood-sword" thing is cheesy and made me cringe everytime I saw it, Shido as a vampire wasn't really interesting.
This anime has little value or rewatchability, I would never purchase it or even rent it.

| This is the first vampire anime i have seen, and i know there are better ones out there than this one. There isnt really much of a story betwean the episodes more than the Cain character that tells something of minor meaning to the story in some episodes.
I would have gived it a 4 in most categories if it wasent for the last 2 episodes when you finally see the feelings shido have for Riho.
I was actually touched (even if it only was for 15min:P) by the outcome of the last episode and realized how dark and sad the world around them actually was.

| Watch Nightwalker. Alternatively: fist- fight a Kodiak Bear.
There is no reason to watch this - one of the most poorly concieved, shoddily executed animes I've ever had the misfortuned to waste my time on.
On a technical level, it fails. The animation is, at best, 'functional' and the soundtrack - usually something I can ignore if it doesn't appeal - is very poor. The opening theme tune is a droning mess, and the end op is woefully inappropriate.
Characters? What Characters? Even when dealing with such a small cast, most of them seem unecesarry. Lead character Shido comes of as little more than a bisexual man going through a mid-life crisis. His assistant and obligatory flying demon thingy appear to be there solely to use the furniture in his office.
Surprisingly enough, it is the also-obligatory schoolgirl character that proves the most interesting, with some of the shows only high-points coming from her suffering.
Storyline? What Storyline? Nightwalkers main concept is both laughably generic and slightly embarrasing to behold (seeing Shido create swords with his blood is just laughable), and is basically played out through 12 monster-of-the-week misadventures.
The only contribution to a real story-arc comes from Shido's former associate Cain. But the writers quickly deal with him in two episodes, lest the show be in any danger of becoming interesting.
Good points? What Good points? Well, there are a few scenes with school-girl Riho that come within a hairs-breadth of being genuine character development. Furthermore, for a show full of - basically - frustrated immortal homosexual whining, the final scene of the show is enjoyably upbeat.
However: don't watch Nightwalker. Never watch Nightwalker. You will never be that bored.

| Aupa ahi chavalotes.
Recomendada.

| What can be said about Nightwalker? Average animation, average story, average characters (although they all have interesting stories,or most of them have anyway), and well, a good opening, I guess.
There is nothing that stands out in this anime, it is, like so many others, just...average. It's basically your average baddie-of-the-week story, with some trips to the background-story land. Although I must say these reminiscences are very well integrated into the main story.
It's easy to watch and entertaining, but don't expect a masterpiece. :p
As far as vampire stories go, Nightwalker brings nothing new. Which doesn't mean it's not interesting.

| Well, I know this sounds strange, but I found this series to be very...sexy. The character design is sexy. The opening theme is SEXY. Vampires are sexy. Detective/noir films are sexy. Shido's seiyuu = sexy. I don't really know a better way to describe it.
Of course the animation and sound are decent. Nothing to rave about, but nothing so bad either. I do wish there had been more involvement with Shido and Cain, but I think that may have been meant to be gone deeper into in another season (which didn't happen). Like they needed more time but didn't have the money for more time.
The action in the series wasn't gory or intense, but simply aided in telling the story. Also, the opening theme is by BUCK-TICK and is the song that got me into japanese music.
It's basically just a modernized take on the old repentant-vampire story.

| This series is most aptly described as "blah". The characters are flat, the motifs are fresh as rotten pineapple, and I could come up with more interesting stories in my sleep. They try to put in lots of action, but what they don't realize is the amount of action can't remedy the fact that they suck like hell. I saw this quite a while ago so I can't remember the details, but I remember thinking repeatedly "how lame can this get?" A repentent vampire trying to save souls. Yeah, that's real creative, dumbass. The only story I remember liking a little more was the story with the little boy who liked animals.
Oh, besides the one hundred and two aspects that could've been better, I wished they could've given more depth to the relationship between that purple haired vampire and his maker. Reminds me of Lestat and his maker Magnus and Armand and his maker Marius. That's the juciness they decided to make boring. How? I guess they're just talented.

| An vampire series a little outside of what one should expect.
I liked it tho. But to the ones who believe these is made on myth and real story. Who can prove that vampires don’t walks in the sun among us if vampires should exist? It is a myth.
So to the one who is vampire at heart and stands with the old type will not like the way they made the anime. But then again, these is an fantasy world with its own rules and its own myth’s so then again it doesn’t have to use our RL rules either.
It irritates me when people just gives it bad points because it does not follow the rules of Real Life and what is written in the books. It is a fantasy/horror anime that I recommend everyone should watch and have an open mind about it.
Sure it is getting some years old now but it still has some nice animations and sounds to it.
I liked the characters that are in these anime and what they stand for.
One thing tho that I didn’t like that well sins every episode has its own story is that you almost can watch any of the episodes in these anime in what line you wish… Almost.
But it is worth seeing. I saw all 12 episodes in one day… Just had to see them all :)
The ending is not quite what I had hoped for but it is not the worst I have seen either. Could have worked a little on that one.

| This show certainly entertained me a lot. I must admit though that, at first glance, I though it would be just a regular action show with no plot line and separated espisodes as standing each on their own, but was gladly wrong. It turned out that NightWalker is somewhat a touching series on most of its episodes, especially when it comes to the background stories of the main characters, with a very interesting ending connected to them.
Some people seem to have missed a little bit of the the point here. This show is clearly _NOT_ supposed to be entirely based on the vampire mithology itself. I tend to believe it is motly a "metropolitan" story about a vampire. Plus, I never saw Shido (the main character) being bathed by sunlight. That said, it is out of order to judge the anime by this aspect, IMO.
Animation and traces were excellent in the first 4 episodes, but then they changed artists and these aspects of the series unfortunately dropped a little bit (heck, they even changed some details of the character designs you were just beginning to get used to), and that was what led me to rate it at 7. But overall, animation was very good with some nice pictures and scenes of the characters, especially Shido.
Sound was OK. I really loved the OP, it was sort of a Gothic Pop, unlike the more cheerful ED theme. However, in-show music was not superb, lying at just average.
Characters are enjoyable. Guni was the first main-character-supporting-creature that I liked (I mean, unlike Mokona, Kero and animals of the sort). Shido has a cool personality, while Riho can be annoying at times, but also likeable. Yayoi has the most touching past story for this show.
As said before, NightWalker got me enjoyed a ton. I watched the first 3 episodes in a day and, from the 4th, it was non-stop till the end of it in the next [day]. I highly recommend it if you're searching for something darker and a bit more serious (overlooking some flaws, of course). Be ware, though: this anime is 4 years old already, so don't expect so much above very nice animation and quality overall.

| Nightwalker definitely isn't a particularly highbrow or ground - breaking work. Furthermore, it's a slightly older anime whose animation falls somewhat short of today's standards.
Nevertheless, I found this to be an enjoyable and addictive anime overall; it's a pretty good way for action/horror fans to blow 6 hrs! My only regret is that there are only 12 episodes.
Disclaimer: I am a horror anime fan, so my perspective on this genre may be somewhat biased. However, I attempt to be as objective as possible when reviewing this type of anime, and I do my best to judge them on their fundamental merits and refrain from giving them all a "free pass". (For example, I am not too fond of the Vampire Princess Miyu OVA.)

| As a fan of (almost) all things vampire I found this to be pretty good for the most part. Some story lines were quite good, others not so good. Strangely they changed some aspects of the character design (eye color) about halfway through the series...about that time animation quality also decreased. I think there was a lot of unrealized potential in this series, it seemed to end far too suddenly.

| Well its standard wampire story, and if you have seen all major wapire animes, you will defenetly enjoy this, but if you are out to buy your first DVD, go for hellsing or blood the first wampire (blood the first wampire is a 40 minutes long movie, but its a real good one)
The fight scenes are a little boring, and they look a like from episode to episode, the fight scenes in hellsing are MUCH better.

| Nightwalker is one of those anime series you can just sit back and enjoy. It's not very long, but it works out. Especially because CMP released it on only two DVDs! ^^ See this if you can... Most Blockbusters have it for rental.

| Well, i'll put it this way, its fun to watch, not exactly one that you'll want to rewatch too much and it probably won't become a favorite. I was kinda sorry that it was so short. The reason is that there's so much potential with these characters to do cool stuff. A lot of its cheesy though. (like the blood swords/whips)
