Of all the works of Leiji Matsumoto, the original Galaxy Express TV series was the one I was most eager to watch but sadly missed during my childhood. While I had watched Captain Harlock I didnt like it that much because space operas are not my cup of tea.

Galaxy Express on the other hand had something unique for an anime series. That eerie, mysterious, surreal feeling in some episodes is not to be found in any chidren's cartoon today and only by watching the series do I realize what are the younger viewers missing.

The animation is decent for a 70s series but what distinguishes GE are the backgrounds. Even as an adult I found them haunting. Sci-fi influences are apparent. The series was inspired by classics childrens books like "The Little Prince" and "Night on the Galactic Railroad" while the female character design was inspired by a 1955 french movie L.Matsumoto saw (Marianne of my youth).

Of course this atmosphere is often limited by the conventional plots found in sci-fi anime, but fortunately most episodes are able to retain it. I imagine that in 113 episodes there would be some problems with the pace.

Of the characters Maeter (not to be confused with metal) is maybe one of the best female anime characters ever and her motherly relation with Tetsuro is the anime's trademark.

It is a pity today this series doesnt get more attention. It deserves a DVD release outside Japan, because it is one of the best TV series ever. Despite the various spin-offs the original 113 episode has that epic feel

Fortunately there's the 20 volume manga that is considered as one of the best.

I have seen this years ago and now re-watching it (up to ep 11).

I think it's very watchable, at least give it first 5 eps (5th ep is very gooood)

This anime is such a classic it deserves almost all 10s INCLUDING animation and music (read my review to see why) and you can still connect to it even though it is sci-fi. it needs to be in the top 200 it's such a masterpiece.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IF YOU LIKED FRUITS BASKET since it has the emotional/depressing thoughts that are very relatable and this anime does that with a plot (fruits basket was missing a plot like the last eps were just like random) and much much more

As old as anime comes, Galaxy Express 999 is the original space opera that gave life to future series protaganists like Captain Harlock.

I haven't watched this show in about 8 years, but I'll try to give a fair reviewed based on an objective memory. As such, I'll only rate the Value and Enjoyment.

Forgiving the elderly series for being over 25 years old, I'll pass on rating the animation and sound completely.

I do remember that the story was fairly complex, involving a young boy running from planet to planet, boarding spaceships, and becoming involved in an intergallactic struggle.

The show was fairly slow moving, a bit boring, and not very fulfilling. It did inspire a whole lot of spinoffs in the future however.

It is impossible to judge the animation of 70s production with the 2000s production. I watch this series, when I was in primary school. It is still in my memory, even it had been more than 25 years ago. This anime is truly classic. The animation was the best among the anime of her day. The sound is superb. The music is old but nostalgic. The storyline is somewhat perfect. Tetsuro travel with mysterious Maetel (well she is the princess of the metal planet). They journey pass numerous planet, which each places represent human bad behaviors such as greed, corrupt, etc. This anime shows the imperfect world, which made human being become bad. Therefore, Tetsuro can learn about the world of adults, which is far from childish fantasy. In fact, I do learn a lot from this anime as well. This is very enjoyable, if you can stand the old 70s anime.

One of the greatest anime series ever created. It gets kind of repetetive at times but thats only natural since it consists of 113 episodes. Of course the animation is not that good by todays standard but who cares? Not me.
I don't really know if this series was intended to be some sort of statement about the sadness in the hearts of humans and mankind's reliance on technichal gadgets but it certainly felt that way to me. People in this series are willing to give up their human bodies in exchange for a mechanical one but is it worth it?
There's an air of sadness throughout this series and the main character, Tetsurou, learns as he journeys through space that a long life doesn't mean it is a happy life.
