| Well the story goes I had overlooked this series for years and while I was watching an ADV outtake of another anime one of the voice actors said how much passion they put into pretear.
This is what finally made me check it out and I have to admit UNFORTUNATELY it was a decent shojo-ish anime despite a huge waste of episodes at the beginning
The Review
Animation
Lets take into account this series was made back in 2001, animation is quite decent even up to today’s standards, yes the transformations are korny as well as Pretears special attacks and enemy designs but its kinda in line with the style this anime is going for.
Sound
A pretty strong point with this anmie imo. The opening and closing credits where very nicely sung. Character voices where decent I liked the wisecracks/jokes between the Pretear and her “handsome rude knight”. Overall very decent.
Story
The story is a basic anime style fairytale. A girl has powers to save the world from darkness and has many “knights” or shall I say guys with individual powers that help/guard/guide her on her quest. Now this story seems very basic until the villain shows up and complicates things. Its after this point somewhere after episode 6 that the story really picks up and if you haven’t been bored by the previous jokey introduction episodes you surely get sucked into a very emotional/romantic storyline that will attempt to pull on your heartstrings.
Character
Well the characters where all kinda what you see is what you get except for the obvious few main characters who had a little depth to them because of their past storylines. Generally all the characters are likable some are even hilarious (the short servant). My only quarm is I felt there where too many “knights” (children knights??) that seemed to serve little point in this anime.
Enjoyment
Well although it was seeming like a rush watch anime for me I did quite enjoy a lot of the jokes in the beginning and the emotional parts at the end I did not really enjoy how it was implemented and I feel it could have been done better but overall i will have to go with
“I don’t want to admit it but I enjoyed it” if that’s a valid answer.
Value
I would say if you like emotional type stories consider this a quick watch and maybe even a quick recommendation to others. For a fairytale type anime it was a good watch (you can’t really expect greatness can you) so I have to say its got decent value but it might not be for everyone.
7.5/10

| This series can be a really quick pit stop, consisting of only 13 episodes. A lot of the concepts in Pretear a a bit too tacky for my taste. Although the idea of one girl being surrounded by guys is commonly used in anime, I don't think Pretear had all the concepts right to make this work. I also felt like the storyline was very...uncertain. Especially how the mood instantly plummets after four episodes of beginning thoughts and dragged exposition. However, there are some instances in this anime that might very lightly brush your heart, or at least prod some kind of emotion out of you. As I said, a bit too tacky, with seven guys surrounding one girl who is all too eager to accompany them...

| I heard it was supposed to be really good but I thought it was alright.
people made it sound like people should check it otu if they were never into magical girl, but I don't think it'll change their minds. the whole thing that was supposed to be special was some relation to fairytales but that didn't help that much
there are some problems but I still enjoyed, I enjoyed the comedy and some other moments

| The allure of New Snow White's Legend Pretear, or simply Pretear, lies in its linkage with two primary fairy tales--Snow White and Cinderella--with a dash of typical magical girl flare and several bishounen characters to boot.
Meet Himeno, a lively optimist and rambunctious girl at first glance, starting life in a new home after her father remarries. Abiding by her proper stepmother's guidelines and shuffling through the annoying antics and obtrusive antics, respectively, of her stepsisters, she finds those to be just a few of her preoccupations as she also discovers that she's the chosen Pretear, a magical being chosen to confront the evil that rains through the red snow, threatening to steal the Leafe energy that lies within all beings. Working with seven guardians, including the quite blunt Hayate, she must use the powers bestowed upon her to not only save the beings caught within the evil, but also uncover a dark past which challenges her will to serve as the Pretear.
Pretear presents itself as a typical, humorous magical girl story, but by the fifth episode of the series and onward, it turns into a story with dramatic twists and undertones. I was quite enamored with the characterization in this series, and felt connected to the storyline without, but truth be told, the series does fall into the typical shoujo series cliches, especially the events of the ending, which seems to settle more than awe its audience. And while some of the twists are certainly surprising, they can become a bit overdone in terms of playing upon the viewer's sentiments.
Nonetheless, to me, this was an enjoyable watch that I would certainly recommend to any shoujo fan, as well as those who love fairy tale storylines.

| If there's one word I'd use to describe this anime, it would be cliched. It's not a word I used often, but whilst watching this, I couldn't help but have that word repeatedly pop into my head. I don't think I've ever seen another anime like this that isn't just unoriginal, but intensely cliched.
The whole magic girl setting immediately gave me a distinct "I've seen this a million times before" feel. Usually there would be something that makes you feel it's unique in some way, but with this that uniqueness feels absent.
And as I watched, the cliches piled on one after another. The extremely generic character designs, with the overused magic-girl-transformation-scene; The annoying loud mouthed heorine trying to prove herself in the eyes of a bishounen character devoid of emotion; the stereotypical villain with the signiture evil manic laughter. The villain overused the evil laughter so much it was a bit like the boyband Westlife overusing the key change towards the end of every single one of their songs. What's more, she had a text book past that I predicted waaay before they tried to sell it off as though it was some kind of big twist, and that wasn't only bit of predictable storyline by far. I could continue, but that would qualify as spoilers, though, given the predictability of twists, the term "spoiler" is probably being used loosely here.
The only part of the story that I couldn't predict are the ones that were so out of the blue they were unrealistic. It was as though they made it up half way - there were no indication given before hand at all that the events could take such a turn, and they were the kind of events that I'd have expect to have shown signs before it happened, the kind that makes you think "oh yea... that explains why earlier he seemed a bit blah blah blah".
But despite the disturbingly unoriginal premises, despite the cliched character archetypes, despite the stale overeaction comedy, and despite the storyline and character development that was either predictable or unrealistic, it wasn't really that bad, especially the last few episodes, during the standard "I'M NOT GIVING UP!!!!" battle of wills and the free flowing emotions that gives you a feeling of deja voux as you're certain you've seen it before somewhere, it was still an effective and emotional climax.
It's not really bad, but then, something as cliched as this is bound to be limited in its "badness", unless you absolutely loath cliches. It still puzzles me to see this getting such a high average though. I'm sure there are far better shows in this genre out there.
PS Wow, the amount of rating fudging this took me to get the right average is amazing :-O

| The first episode of Pretear smashed a sledge hammer titled Fushigi Yuugi in my head. It got stuck there for 13 episodes. It may be only my closed-mindedness that when I see an ordinary girl is suddenly revealed to be an important magical princess and become surrounded by a flock of pretty boys, it reminds me of Fushigi Yuugi. Even though Pretear takes different in its story and characters, the first impression is always there.
There's some advantages and disadvantages in Pretear's short length. The good part is that the romance of the main pair isn't taken to such painful levels as in FY. This is very good because the romantical scenes between the two show a total lack chemistry. I felt rather indifferent toward their relationship. The bad part of the length is that most of the characters are left unused. All the Liefe Knights apart Hayate and Sasami are plain wall flowers. They come around to fight, make a few jokes, comment something and leave everything meaningful for others. And the kids annoy the heck out of me. They are there just to wake Himeno's mother's instincts. Her family is much the same. Mawata being the exception they role is mainly to be comedic relief.
Setting aside the boring main romance Sasami and Mawata spice up the series enough to make followable. Even though I felt some twists of the plot too sudden and unjustified, they made the at times too predictable plot a little more interesting. Unfortunately some episodes show such cliches of the genre that it was difficult to watch it for embarrasement. Good thing that story has a lot humor to lighten to situations otherwise it would be unbearably mushy to watch.
Animation is looks good enough and the characters sympathetic. Most effects are clearly used for Himeno's pret-sequence which is quite nice. Music is rather forgettably playing in the background and fails to raise any emotions in the critical scenes. The opening starts out fine but becomes uncatchy fast.
Pretear feels throughoutly like a little sister of FY: they may look and feel a bit different but gene pool is the same. What Pretear gains in it's tight storytelling, it loses in epic proportions of FY. If you liked FY, I see no reason why you wouldn't like Pretear also.

| OK I'm a softie and a sucker for a good magical girl anime filled with romance and Pretear has all of this and more ^_^
The only other anime I've seen with more bishounen is Haruka Nara Toki no Naka de *lol* and for anyone who loves a good fairytale, with some evilness mixed in, you need look no further.

| A pretty good anime that made a nice impression. Although the minor characters were not really introduced too properly, the main characters were clearly accented.
Main character has an okay personality. Not one of those girls you feel like punching because of their girl-ish girly always crying voice.
Anyways, that wasn't the point. This a good anime. Recommended ^^

| In the 'Magical Girl with added Bishounen crew' subgenre, Pretear is one of the better ones out there. But, it's still just a Magical Girl anime. Predictable, but it did had a few nice twists. The thing that kept it fun was the pacing. With only 13 episodes, the story moves along nicely. If you like this type of anime, i would certainly recommend it, otherwise it's a nice way to kill some time on a rainy afternoon.

| I think that "Pretear" is a funny, cute, and adventurous anime that shouldn't be missed. It begins with a despondent girl (Himeno) who is having trouble fitting into her new family. Her father (once a poor novelist) has recently married the wealthiest woman in the city; Himeno feels like a lonely outcast who doesn't belong. Suddenly seven mysterious knights appear in search of a "Pretear". They call themselves the "Leafe Knights" (pronounced Leef-aye), and their powers cannot be used/utilized unless they are combined with the pretear. They end up determining that young Himeno is the pretear they've been looking for; Himeno must assist the Leafe knights in saving the world from complete destruction. In every single of the thirteen episodes more and more is revealed about the history and current situation of the knights creating an interesting and suspenseful anime that brings its own twists and turns to a classic story. This anime is one of my personal favourites; the characters are all very distinct, and charming in their own ways, and the concept of "Pretear" and the magic of the Leafe is quite enchanting. I highly recommend it!

| Generally, I found this to be a light-hearted, feel-good, happily ever after type of anime. I know you're thinking, what about the good and evil, the love and hate, the hope and despair elements of the show? They are there but they've been done so many times that it's really nothing new. This anime will appeal to the lovers of the genre and the people within the targeted demographic. However, I’m older than that target and while the show was enjoyable, it doesn’t have the same kind of magic for me anymore.

| Also another AWESOME anime! I like the plot line, a loser girl who has to save the world by combing her soul with the leafe knights. very nice. But, you sorta have to be a girl, or like shoujo to enjoy this ^_^;;; Anyways, the characters are very lovable, and so is the music ^_^. It's kinda like Sailor Moon, Knights of the Zodiac and Cinderella mixed all together... only...more awesome then you think XD. But, like any other Shoujo anime, the fights are done very poorly. All they do is find the core of the enimey, which take 1 or 2 seconds, then hit it and the fight it over. woohoo. But, other then that, I like the romance and events they go through in this anime, it's very unqie and awesome ~_^ But it went by too fast... at least be 24 episodes... not 13... T_T And boys... you know it's rated Shoujo... so if you aren't into girly shows like that... then don't watch it...

| I don't understand why this show got such a high rating here. The general "style" of this anime reminded me of Yumeria and Girls Bravo. That is, a kind of exaggerated unrealism, where people get punched, tossed into the air, destroy walls and various other objects and it's portrayed as normal. It seems to be a sort of comedy that I don't get, because it really turns me off in taking anything in the show serious.
Onto the plot then.. here I have two more problems. First, the whole thing about leafs and knights and a dark princess and a haphazard heroine needed to save the day.. kinda made me go "what the hell?". Totally uninspired and uninteresting. Monsters pop up for some no other reason than to make the heroine Himeno morph with one of the knights it seems. They couldn't make me care about any of it. Second, the girlish point-of-view is rather annoying. I'm a guy and it doesn't appeal to me at all. It's why I stopped watching peach girl. Maybe you have to be a girl to appreciate this, I don't know, but it's rather annoying to see yet another insecure woman try to do her best and be in a kind of love-hate relationship with some stupid guy where neither dares to actually do anything except act like total idiots.
I'll try to add some good points too, although they are few and far inbetween. The animation is top knotch. Nothing bad to be said here. Some of the characters in the household were kinda nice. The mother and father, the insecure rich girl. Also interesting was the situation of poor-into-rich that Himeno was in, and how she tried to fit in but couldn't. Sadly.. that was only a point in the first episode, after that it was pretty much ignored.
Final conclusion.. nice graphics and sound, a completely bland plot, pointless action, annoying slapstick comedy.. and don't watch it unless you liked Bridget Jones.

| A few things I want to get off my chest before starting on the review:
a) It's A SIN to draw anime characters that look so DAMN GOOD, i.e Hayate and Sasame! ARGH. They are so hot it's unbelievable :P
b) OMG AND THEIR VOICES...I think I'm in love with the seiyuus :P
Ah, obsession rant over. Let's get to the point.
Honestly, I had not much expectations when I started watching this series. I just wanted something light and easygoing to take my mind off my exams. And for the first few episodes, this series certainly fulfilled the lighthearted and comedic requirement. In fact, I thought that the series is going to continue in that strain ala Excel Saga.
However, after episode 5 or 6, the series started getting serious and dramatic. I finished all 13 episodes in one sitting and it's quite a feat. I have absolutely no complains about the pacing of the story, especially in the second half as everything the storyline was kept tight and quick. In fact, Pretear is what X Tv COULD have been, had they dispensed with all the nonsesical filler episodes (Bleh!).
The music in this series is also another of it's strong points. The background music is fitted perfectly with the series and is extremely helpful in setting the mood :) I love the bacnground music. Heck, this series is quite similar to X Tv, cos the background music in X Tv is also awesome!
As for the characters, ALL of them are so good looking they ought to be illegal (another similarity with X Tv). All of them also had their own reasons to be who they are in the series, and this give them some depth. However, the series mainly focussed on Sasame, Hayate and Himeno, so it's a waste that the other characters are not that developed. The little blond boy is SO CUTE!
I'm quite torn about the story. At first, when it's all comedic and funny, I can accept it because it fits into the outrageous theme. But when it started getting serious, I honestly didn't know to laugh at the absurdity or to full-heartedly immerse myself in the series. LOL. Even when I was weeping buckets, a small part of me is going, What the hell is wrong with this series?! Why is the storyline so unbelievable?! But I guess despite the far out storyline, the fact that I still managed to cry buckets means that it has done something right :)
Conclusion - This is a series that blows my mind away. I haven't wept so much since watching Rurouni Kenshin's OVAs. Even Kimi Ga Nozumo Eien is one big bore to me :P Therefore, this is a series worth watching and is UNEXPECTEDLY good.

| I will suggest this to only the people who are fans of shoujo animes. I'm sure people who love strong violence and gore might find this anime too soft for them. I myself might find some scenes are a bit corny. But I still enjoyed it. The conculsion to this anime is really something worth waiting for.

| First off, I have to say that if you're not a shoujo fan, this anime won't change your mind in the least. It's a genre anime, meaning that follows the formula fairly closely - brooding hero, slightly off-kiltered but powerful and large-hearted heroine, fun sidekicks, etc. If you're a shoujo fan, you're in for some fun.
This anime is driven by the music. In fact, upon watching the last episode, I realized that the openning song pretty much told me the story from beginning to end, except I didn't know it since I hadn't watch the anime. Bit of a catch 22, I know. I really liked the openning theme. It's catchy and very shoujo-esque. The rest of the music was pretty standard of the genre, cute and fluffy but fairly good.
In the context of the genre, the characters are developed fairly well. I realize that if you look beyond the genre, the characters are a little flat, but that's the nature of the beast. Despite that, though, I enjoyed this one. If you suspend belief a little, as requisite of the genre, you'll have a pretty fun emotional joyride with the characters. (I found myself bawling at the last episode.)
The animation was fine. There were a few sketchy parts where it looked like the animators got super lazy, but other than that, it was pretty decent, fairly reminiscent of Magic Knights Rayearth. It's not as lush as other shoujo anime that I can name, but then, it isn't exactly sub-par.
The story is about as developed as it can get for a story of this genre. There's only so much you can do, and for a short series like this one, I'm glad they decided not to take risks. Basically, boy meets girl; girl and boy falls in love after a few personality clashes; boy deals with traumatizing past; girl saves world by sacrificing self; boy saves girl; all live happily ever after. Toss in a few hot bishounen, a couple of adorably-drawn kids, a completely crazy best friend and a wild family. Mix and you've got this anime. Like I said, it's a genre anime.
Would I watch this anime again? Well, I've already rewatched the parts I liked (namely the last episode), but I won't be watching this one from start to finish again unless I watch it with a friend who've yet seen it.
All in all, it's a good bit of fluff and a great way to waste a few hours. However, like all shoujo, it's pretty standard overall, and it won't have the same impact on you as something like Utena. It is, though, much fun to be had, especially if you watch it with a couple of little kids, preferably girls. ^_^

| Pretear was for me, owned by the music, it is by far the best aspect of this anime which is a romance anime at heart.
You may disagree and say the animation was the best aspect, but I gave it a 9 purely because I didn’t like the way the moved, far too many times when the characters were moving, for example running, it seemed very awkward and unprofessionally drawn, plus I was being harsh as well.
The sound as I said just made this anime what it is, it really really livened up the rather old and not-so-interesting story and added so much emotion into it that otherwise were nearly non-existent.
I didn’t like the story that much, it was basically a fairy tale inside out, everything screamed of the classic fairy tale formula. Also I hated the transformation, very cheesy and lame, especially after the 10th time, it for me was a bit like the power ranger/digimon transformations… the ending was another thing of the story I disliked, see for yourself on that one. There were good bits too, but few and far between.
There were some class characters, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that I was pretty much not caring and liking any of the Leafe Knights, they, to me were either boring dull people (especially the 3 kids) or they weren’t but had quite a normal personally that didn’t strike a chord. But the comedy characters were great.
I really think this anime should have been more focused on comedy then fighting, because the comedy bits were just hilarious, could have easily been the top 5 greatest anime comedy ever with the characters and the animation, but sadly it wanted to be a fighting anime, which is ultimately it’s downfall.

| From the annoying J-pop, vapid bishounen, and recycled plot, everything about Pretear screams generic. The anime refused to take even teeny steps outside the boundaries of its genre, and as a result, is no better than things I've seen thirty times before.
The characters were wooden and unconvincing, especially Hayate and Takako. Hayate exemplifies an anime archetype that I find highly annoying: the stoic, brooding man in desperate need of a personality. If there's one thing that has been done to death, it's that. Takako was a very unconvincing villain; her reasoning behind her actions was just flimsy. The "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" logic didn't work in Majutsushi Orphen, and it didn't work here. Think of something better than that. This same concept goes to Sasame and Mawata. Their reasons were not strong enough for the exaggerated reactions portrayed in the series. Granted, Sasame has a good reason, but even that seemed forced and unnatural. The change was just way too sudden. As for everyone else, they're really not worth mentioning, and yes, that includes the anime's lead, Himeno. There's nothing remotely interesting about her, and I couldn't have cared less about her.
The pacing is sluggish, and it wasn't until more than halfway through the series that I was mildly interested in what was happening. That should never happen in a series of this length. In the start, the series is almost episodic, with Himeno preting with a different Leafe Knight and destroying a demon larva in the end of an episode. This also should not happen in a series of this length. And the quality of the story itself really doesn't justify this. Borrowing elements from fairy tales, this could have been a more interesting plot...but....it just turned out to be stale and cliche.
All in all, this has been done before and better. Pretear's distinctive lack of originality and blatant staleness only underlines what it is: disposable fluff.

| This is one anime that everyone should really watch. Even though the tittle might shy some of us away, its trully one of those hidden gems. Clearly a great twist to a fairy tale, with great replay value. Shoujo fans rejoice.
Clearly a must get. Anime is suppose to make you eager to see what is going to happen, & this anime succeds that where lots have failed.
