This is a series I should have watched right from the start, before the Ghibili films.
But initially I thought this had to do with Detective Conan (no way I'll watch 500episodes) or more obscurely with the childhood memories of Conan the Barbarian (btw I miss that cartoon from the 90s).
And indeed sometimes it felt like watching Future Boy Spiderman with all that superhuman strength and agility Conan demonstrates.
On the other hand this proved to be one of the most enjoyable adventure series I watched and it is a must watch for any Studio Ghibili animation lover.
All the settings would later be used for Nausicaa and Castle in the Sky. Jules Verne influences are present, even if it was based on another novel.
The characters really are of the best I've seen and the lack of them today shows why commercial anime has taken the downward route and only very few series manage to be memorable.
All the films enviromental, political and philosophical messages (though here they are more socialist than in the directors later works) would be later developed in the Nausicaa manga and movie, Princess Mononoke and Pom Poco.
Excluding all these messages the series features all the elements that make it a nice watching experience for children and adults alike .
It has a freshness and uniqueness that I have difficulty spotting in the more recent titles, let alone in the heavily edited series aimed a children.
Sure I've seen such kind of stories countless times but if they're well directed I dont mind watching them again.
The animation, though very mediocre sometimes, the settings nevertheless were detailed (this takes place in air, sea and plain after all, including ship chases, dog fights and land combat) and show the care that was taken.
Female characters may look exactly the same though, but I'm used to Ghibili works so I dont mind. Other viewers might though.
I'll look for further series of the World Masterpiece Theatre as like many other viewers I grew with such animes based on novels instead of the Dragon Balls and Sailor Moons.
If you were introduced to anime through the 70's and 80's, you've watched most of the works of Miyazaki and like classic sci-fi (since the series is based on the book "The incredible tide"), this is a must-watch.
Especially if you liked titles such as Mysterious Cities of Gold, Treasure Island, Les Mondes Engloutis, the first 22 episodes of Nadia or the decent Secret of the Cerulean Sand, this should not be missed.

An anime that has a great story is hard to come by, but Future Boy Conan passes this test with flying colors. Although the original basis is highly unoriginal, the way they developed it into a boy searching for a girl, and then into something even more is VERY engaging and enjoyable; which are all the attributes I look for in an anime.

I love the characters. They are good-hearted, yet simple-minded kids, but you can't help but to love their hilarious demeanor/behavior. They have their own personalities, but the interactions just draw you more into their characters. Furthermore, although Conan seems to be almost more of a monkey than a human, but his courage, strength, and not to mentio determination is admirable! He is definitely one of the most reliable characters I've seen without being annoyed at him.

I would recommend this anime to anyone who enjoys a great, light-hearted adventure of companions in a world that is rebuilding itself. My only complaint would be that those who want a thoughtful or emotional anime would dislike or be disappointed with this.

It’s true that you can only tell the same story so many times. However, the charm of Miyazaki is that he can tell the same story multiple times and audiences will praise and eat up his recycled material like M&M’s. As evidence, I point to Princess Mononoke, once the highest grossing film in Japan, despite that it is essentially a weaker version of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (which, if I may add, I did not enjoy) is a weak, tedious version of the famed director’s first effort, Future Boy Conan. Conan is very similar to Laputa in terms of story and character, but Conan is the much better work; it’s not the similarities but the key differences that make it the true classic: lovable characters and a fully realized world make Future Boy Conan one of Miyazaki’s finest works.

Miyazaki’s storytelling methods have changed very little in nearly thirty years; adventure, science-fiction, and a war-torn world are the key elements here. Here, mankind is near annihilation and a hierarchal class structure is underway. For example, a citizen must earn points if he wants to become a “higher-class” citizen. This is certainly nothing groundbreaking, but it is not without its charm. There is a great scene when Conan meets Jimsy for the first time. The two start competing with each other to see which is stronger. Scenes like this run rampant in this anime, and I enjoyed them all. The story loses a bit of steam when Conan and Lana reach High Harbor, but it picks up again after a few episodes.

Castle in the Sky is the only other Miyazaki work that has a male protagonist that isn’t completely overshadowed by the female character. Conan remains a significant character throughout the entirety of the film. Conan is very strong, a brute if you will; there is even one scene where Conan carries Lana on his back, saying she needs to regain her strength to be able to walk on her own again. A scene like this will never play out in a Miyazaki work today and I was surprised to see it here. It’s worth noting that the adults are either annoying (i.e., Dyce) or despicable (i.e., Lepka, Miss Monsley and everyone else). I was reminded of those Home Alone movies when watching this. In the back of my mind, I was aware of the absurdity of it all, but I was delighted to see children triumphing over adults anyway.

This is one of the most satisfying anime ever. The story is a bit laidback, still exciting and surprising at times and simply very good.
This anime will leave you with a joyous feeling and happiness and is a valuable gem in between all kinds of tragic and sad and open-ended anime. It simply breathes hope and love for the new generation and is optimistic. I think this is very good. All these facts do not diminish the enjoyment or the bond you feel with the characters. It is a touching anime. Watch it, to please yourself.

The animation is old, but still impressive. Although some laws of physics are being ignored by strong heroes I do not mind one bit: it reflects the world of possibilities that lies open to those who truly believe in and hope for a better world.
The sound is very good, although I am not Japanese and do not understand one word I happily sing along the opening and ending theme. Especially the beginning with the destruction of the world is impressive.
The story progresses very well: with a good semi-ending in the middle that suits the need for rest and the slowing of pace very well.
Totally awesome!

Although I'm not a big fan of Miyazaki's work (it's too childish for my tastes and storylines are far too basic), I liked this anime. My sister loved it.
It is somewhat simple for our modern tastes but animation quality is very good, character designs are now-nostalgic and our hero is a truly idiot but it works fine.
I'd advise everyone who is interested in animation history to watch this. It is a remarkable, heart-warming story and quite a lot of fun.

Miyazaki's character designs are clearly visible, if you are old enough to remember Heidi, you will feel pretty comfortable with this one.

One last thing, I love the flying boat design!

Gotta love Ghibli style drawing art. The story goes well with the environment, place, and time. Even though the idea is new when this come out(1978), right now(2004) it got old. It remind me of waterwolrd movie; How the story plot out and charters were almost the same. Since it anime, our hero(Conan) might have been too strong for his ages. Comeon how can he doughn many bullet like Neo do in Matrix withou get hit not even once. Beside the exaggerated about strength of heroes, everything fit the roles very well. The directer and the one who draw this really co-po, how the ship draw out and how the tunnels connected together. The art is fine for their times and sound were not that bad. btw: if anyone can find ed song for this series email me plz!

Overall, this series is a great classic anime, every fan of Ghibli's style will LOVE this. Actually this is one of the few TV series I've ever seen(Now and then here and there is another one) that been draw in Ghibli styles. Watch it!! I recommend it!!! and if you love it BUY IT!!

Whilst it is pretty good for older anime i don't think it really cuts it compared to the newer stuff.

The trouble is the pacing at the beginning was just too slow -- way too slow, but it does get better towards the end.

Also some of the characterization was too plain -- you get the good good people, truly evil/selfish ones and some other typical in betweens. It doesn't really have the depth of character like newer animes such as Tsukihime or Princess Mononoke.

Story was entertaining is general and the end arc is really addictive - but overall, it felt a bit on the bland side. There were no real moments of coolness or emotional highs/lows -- just middling, is how i would explain it.

Recommended though, if you just have to watch all of Miyazaki's works - one for the Otaku only really.

This was really heart-warming anime. Sure, it was old-fashioned in more than the quality of anime, the values and ideals were not quite from today - which doesn't mean I think the people who made this were expressing wrong values by any means.
The animation wasn't as shiny as today, but it still was one of the best I've seen. The way the characters moved! I could've watched the anime only for that.
Certainly worth watching in other aspects too ^^

Fantastic tales like this aren't made any more. Nadia and the Secret of the Blue Water may be a good adventure anime but Future Boy Conan is even better. Conan and Lana's odissey through the post apocalyptic future is trully inspiring, yet it's told very naturally.

Future Boy Conan precludes basic concepts that characterize Ghibli's future works - especially Miyazaki's. Nature preservation, children as main characters, flight scenes, female characters with strong personalities, etc. Monsley and Lana have shining performances that makes me question what happened to today's demeaning state of female characters in anime.

Well, there is certainly a reason why Miyazaki is considered a master of anime. Even this early (1978!) he surpassed the general limitations of the genre and delivered something short of breath-taking.
Not so refined and rich as his later work but one of the most enjoyable series I have ever seen.
Love, adventure, characters you root for, character you despise, a little drama, a little comdey, a fast pace... overall a pure joy to watch.
