Pity there is only one. Still, a good taste to the wildly popular sci-fi fantasy novel series in Japan. Just wished there were more. So much history hidden i've barely scratched the surface of this universe.

Another one that falls under the category of 'really entertaining, yet really confusing'. Five Star Stories was a lot of fun to watch, but depending on how well you deal with condenced or alternative stories it may leave you scratching your head. On the production side of things this is about the same quality as the X movie. From the extravegant, yet sort of creepy sound, to the character designs, to the animation itself.

The story is entertaining, dont get me wrong, but they manage to cram a heck of a lot of stuff into 60 minutes or so. I'm not familiar with the manga so I cant say how much of, or what part of the story is here, but you will get a story that has a beginning, climax, and conclusion. Not the usual open-ending you're used to seeing in stuff like this, however, you will feel like something is missing, or that this is only a small part of something bigger.

I've always been strangely ambivalent about Mamoru Nagano's "Five Star Stories". Probably because it tries too hard to be complicated, has a constantly wandering focus and, it has to be said, little point in the end. But that's just the manga.

The anime version attempts to condense the basics of the original manga plot thread down to the equivalent of a short movie. It succeeds as such, but ends up looking like the first episode in a series of such stories.

A full-length feature film, with a bigger budget, would look pretty spectacular, I'm sure, as the plot itself has promise. Ultimately, though, references to the three Fatima sisters Lachesis, Clotho and Atropos, and their respective fates during the time of Ladios Sopp, come to nothing.

Both Lachesis and Clotho are respectively rescued by their "knights in shining armour", and the ugly villain has his posterior well and truly eviscerated. The end.

An interesting distraction at the time, but it hasn't aged so well, so view this only when you're absolutely desperate.

(The Mortar Headds rock, though ;)

I saw this anime a years ago and, even though I had no idea what was going on, I loved it. I'm not really sure why... the animation seemed dated even at the time, the story was confusing, and the music was mediocre at best. Even Nagano, the manga artist who created the series, hated the anime. Still, for reasons I don't understand, this has to be one of my favorite animes. It's definitely worth a shot.

The manga, however, is 100000000x as good. It actually makes sense, for one thing. It's an epic, humorous, and often touching affair that can't be missed. I highly recommend buying it.
