Warning, some spoilers! (I can't seem to review this without encompassing the whole of the story. Sorry!)

This is a post-apocalyptic vision that makes clear references to Christianity, salvation and innocence.

The male lead character carries a cross-shaped weapon and despite becoming a protector to the female lead, he ultimately betrays her. Though he is kind and appears to care very much, his decisions are final and carry the weight of absolute conviction. His actions and contradictory attitude clearly symbolizes the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church.

The garb and armaments of certain statues, combined with the recited biblical story of Noah, can be interpreted as a reference to the crusades or religious wars in general. The man carrying the cross of course symbolizes atonement for sins. Intriguingly, from an outside standpoint, his brand of atonement is actually generating just as many sins.

It is probably noteworthy to mention that the young woman's beauty seems marred by a slightly vacant expression and the sick pallor of anemia or similar disease. Her stature, compared to that of the man, seems stunted and repressed as if she'd had to endure famine since early childhood. Despite this, under different circumstances she might be fetching and lovely.

So that's it, obviously it is a weird movie with endless interpretation. When watching this, it is best to try to explore the mentality of the writer and director instead of blindly guessing at the purpose of the story.

Cheers!

Anata wa dare desu ka?
(Who are you?)

That is a phrase used somewhat as a main theme in this anime and that also sums it up excellently.

Angel's Egg is a dark, gothic anime with very little dialog and voice narration.
There is narration of course, but not by voice, rather by images and sound.
This creates a very subjective story that is unique for every viewer. It depends on the viewer to actually think and interpret what he/she sees in the imagery portrayed.

Generally I think Angel's Egg will leave you with more questions than answers and you will be intrigued to find out more about certain aspects, or have a desire to re-watch it to see if you can answer the questions with a second viewing.

This is a very unique anime, and in my opinion excellent, but if you aren't in the right mood, you will probably get bored by it.

after so many animes where there are episodes with an amazing opening, story full of action or emotion, end credits and a preview of the next episode, it is no wonder I hesitated to watch Angel's Egg. Such narrative, just using pictures isnt so commercial. Some years ago I used to see many films that werent for fast food watch. Some animation films too, mainly from Eastern Europe.

Because in order to tolerate this anime it is necessary for the viewers eye to get used to another pace, more observant and more accepting for that sort of film. For an anime it is complex but it is evident that it borrows many elements from cinema. I've felt that I've seen many of the things depicted here before, while watching many films of this sort.

I felt that the way of presentation had some limitations and would perhaps do much better as a film. Animating that sort of symbols is very difficult and sometimes technicalities limit the art.

Visually it is impressive though but perhaps it would need to last longer (over 2 hours) to make a better impression. Just when I used to like it it ended abruptly.

Even so a must see since it is a unique experience.

Wow, something that interested me enough to actually wrote a revview on it.

To note, this is an ABSTRACT anime, meaning that it will not appeal to many people. In my opinion, the only things that are close to this, were perhaps the first episode of Texhnolyze (for the use of visuals telling the story along win minimal dialogue) Or things like Spring and Chaos, which is a bit on the abstract side.

This could have been called: “The Nearly Silent Adventure of a Platinum Haired Girl”. Surreal, mysterious and abstract in direction.

I made sure I did some reading before reviewing this just in case I said something terribly wrong. In fact I learnt that I couldn’t. The fact is that you make what you want of this film.

The animation is typical of Yoshitaka Amano – the artist of a lot of Final Fantasy art works. I enjoyed the very antique feel of the animation.
For those that are easily bored or want some action, look elsewhere, this anime is very slowed paced for most parts and doesn’t offer much thrills.

Characters are 2. And both as mysterious as the other. Since they don't talk much, you have to rely on other things to work out this anime, namely music/sounds and what you see.

I wouldn’t really recommend this to people, unless you like confusing stuff, philosophical stuff and very unusual stuff. It’s almost impossible to review such an anime, in the end decide yourself whether you’d like to watch this or not.

I must say I didn't understand what this film was getting at. I tried real hard to understand the philosophy behind, but I didn't.

There's hardly any conversation, which leaves it up to the audience to put all the scenes together and make something out of it.

It is not a film trying to answer questions, insted it's creating questions.

This anime is very special, it takes up filosofical questions and is related to the christian faith. I think its a nice anime well written and well made, maybe a little slow on what its about, but worth seing. But you need patience, so if ure one of thoose naruto fanboys, than dont see this, or do so and learn how its supposed to be done.

this is the most bizzare anime i have ever seen.

its like those who created it cared only about that the audience wouldn't understand what is going on while keeping it dark.

dont watch this if your sleepy beacause this movie is like an unexplained dream and you can fall a sleep in the middle (I did)

worth to watch, it really expands the mind.

for thinkers only.

I extremelly wonder what the ppl who made Angel's Egg could have been thinking. I´d say is basically a non story occurring in a very beautiful production especially for the year it was made.

I really did try to like Angel's Egg, but I had absolutely no idea what it was getting at. If there was any doubt before that Mamoru Ishii is a crackhead, then let this movie erase that. There are a lot of heavy-handed existentialist themes to this movie, and that philosophy is basically what the movie centralizes itself around. This decision creates for a viewing experience that is alarmingly unbalanced, thought-provoking and painfully boring all at the same time.

The animation and sound were definitely not the focal points of this movie. Actually, they may have been, but I have absolutely no way of telling...They are certainly the easiest to interpret, at least. Graphically Angel's Egg is rather enthralling-looking; the only two characters are quite memorably designed, and the dark and desolate streets of the abandoned village are haunting on a thoroughly spiritual level. As much as one can argue for or against the merits of this movie, it is hard to argue that the art is not beautiful, especially for its time. This must have looked revolutionary 20 years ago. In aural terms, Angel's Egg has very little to speak for itself. There is almost no music and, because of the noticeable dearth of dialogue, it is difficult to evaluate the voice acting.

There is no story to this anime. It is left almost entirely for the viewer to interpret. No two people are going to see the same Angel's Egg, and those very people are going to have wildly varying opinions about it. Whether to interpret it as a pointless piece of shit or a deeply symbolic surrealist artwork is a decision left to the audience, though if anything I'd have to opt for the former. This is something of a hollow production on the whole, but watching it incurred a sort of bleakness inside of me; whether this was from boredom or whether the film had taken some sort of effect on my soul, I really couldn't tell. It certainly is different from other animes, though whether or not that's a good thing is completely up in the air. Angel's Egg is by all means a novelty, and even though you're most likely going to either appreciate it or hate it I recommend sparing the 80 minutes to experience it anyway.

This is certainly not a movie for the masses. The viewer must be in a mood for some dark and serious art in order to enjoy it. Having enough sleep is also highly recommended since Angel's Egg involves mostly contemplating beautiful backgrounds and music and thinking about the raised questions.
It is definitely a great experience if you're interested in philosophical movies that most people would call 'boring'.

This is not so much a movie as it is a dream. And just as art is only art in the eye of it's beholder, this is a film you will either love or hate. This anime gives you ao facts or information, and lets you decide everything; from the christian symbology to the idea that life is nonexistant, this movie has more questions than answers, and no two people will get the same message out of it.
A word of caution: this is incredible boring. No action, no plot and little dialogue will turn off most people. I walked away from this mesmerised. A landmark achievement, just be think before you see it.

I can stare at the skies all day without feeling bored.

So mysterious is this anime that it makes me sleep. I was struggling to keep awake in many instances. I cant remember another anime having that much of a bedtime effect on me.

Some finds this anime to be a piece of art. For me, I find ALL animes to have artistic values whether it was intended or coincidental. It's up to the viewers to perceive it.

So, if u dont get it after watching..that's that. The art just doesnt attunes to you. Therefore, for now, this anime can be rightfully be rated as LAME or GREAT according to your own perception and opinion.

Sad to say, this will be the first anime that i will be placing the YAWN label on.

I actually like the dark gloomy streets in this anime. But, somehow, the overall impact invoked more of my sleepiness in contrast to my perception of art.

This anime is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

finally a deep arthouse kind of anime. i like the fact almost everything in this movie isn't explained to viewer which makes you really think about it.
the art is very good especially since it was created in 1985. the music was done brilliantly and blended well within it.

Angel's Egg could be described as a non story occurring in a very beautiful and polished production. The world is amazingly beautiful and surreal. "Angel" lives in a place of destroyed gothic architecture and somewhat organic HR Giger like set pieces.

The characters are lost in an existence that we don't understand, and they don't seem to understand it themselves. Angel's Egg is darkness, loss and confusion in Anime form. We have all felt this way at times.

Did I like it? It was okay :)

"..." was all I could say after having seen this one. I did not understand a thing about this anime... not a single thing. Yet I know there is ALOT to it. It is a beautiful story, a deep story. Too deep for me - when I was tired - to understand it. I want to watch it again some day when I get my hands on the DVD/VHS.

i love angel's egg, and i don't really know why...

i don't think ANYONE understands it, i don't even think the people who MADE it understood it. it's just plain WEIRD!

but that's OK...

i like weird stuff, and this is as weird as it gets.

the animation is breathtaking. the soundtrack is SO good. i own it and listen it it often, though it can get kind of scary if you listen to it while sitting alone in a dark room. ^_^

i was forced to give story and character a 5...it makes me sad, since i really DO love this anime. but let's be realistic here, there is really no story...and there are 2 characters, and they are both very strange, don't talk, and have NO development! but i think the man is very cute. ^_^ i like amano's artwork a lot.

this anime is also i bit depressing...so i don't recommend it to people who have emotional issues.

BUT i recommend it to everyone else. it's something that really NEEDS to be seen.

there are about 10 lines of dialog in the movie. yes, that's correct, 10 lines. view this only if you can appreciate good art.

This is a really interesting film. There is a lot of interaction between the two characters, but very little spoken dialogue. Even with so little dialogue and no backgrounds whatsoever, by the end of the movie you actually care about the characters (well, I did anyway). This alone is a great accomplishment since I have seen films where characters backgrounds are given and lots of dialogue occurs and I still don't care about them when all is said and done. As the description says, the film is largely up to interpretation. It really has to be watched at least twice. I didn’t rate the story since it is completely subjective. I liked it, but obviously not everyone will, and it’s not because you have to understand it or be some sort of artistic elitist to enjoy it. Just take it for what it’s worth.
