Memories is basically a three independendent OVAs for some reason put together into a movie format. Actually, even the title of this movie only applies to the first of the three shows. In turn it makes this movie very hard to judge. Fortunately, even though plot, ideas, directors and pretty much everything else is different between those three pieces, I found them pretty similar rating wise, even though for completetly different reasons.

If you have two hours to kill and don't have any better movie at your hand, then you might as well pick up this one to watch. Even though there are better anime movies around here, this one is still quite interesting and succeeds in holding viewer's attention for its whole running time.

This is a very hard anime to enjoy. Its a movie with 3 parts where each part is a different story. And the worse part is the last part which made no sense in what its showing. Though all stories end without an ending the last one was just more of bizarre. The stories are unique, so is the animation, but then its really hard to hate, but even harder to like this. The first 2 stores the animation was lifelike, very detail and very good. The last however looks like it came from some war episode. The sound is ok, but not great. One thing about this anime is that you cannot expect anything and the ending is more of a twist rather than a completion of the anime.

another unique experience is certainly guaranteed when watching Memories. This is a must watch and another pause from mainstream titles. I heard it wasnt licensed in USA due to high licensing fees
and only a R2 DVD was available, but today with the Internet such hindrances arent a problem anymore.

Of all three stories I have to say I was impressed with the third, that is also one of the best designed and animated features from Japan I saw.
The first story as an animated film was also very good and original, adapting various sci-fi elements to animation. The part where the main lead sees what really happens to his daughter was very touching.
Overall worth watching though dont expect to see something different in the world of sci-fi from what you've read in books or watched in movies already.

The second story was also surprisingly funny and refreshing. Probably Shato Kun was influenced by this kind of narrative as the most surreal things occur there. Plants are blooming while people are dying and
that only thanks to one pill! Worth a watch if after the depressing first movie and later the third movie you'd like a funny pause.

The third story, probably the most misunderstood is perhaps the most haunting of the three. A totalitarian society occupied with warfare and the weapons industry.
Though the message may have been repeated countless times the animation is memorable with everything looking disturbingly bleak and depressing. The characters faces, those that dont wear masks, are terrifying to watch.
A very pessimistic animated film overall.

Memories, another Studio 4C production will not appeal to the casual viewer. Watch this only if you've experience in watching similar titles or else it might put you off. Such titles are not for relaxing.

Ahhh, Memories...what Memories will I have of this anime? Very mediocre ones, that's for sure. I heard SO much about this back in the day, and was dying to see it. Maybe that's why it let me down.

Yes, Magnetic Rose (act 1) was beautiful and Stink Bomb (act 2) was wonderful...but Cannon Fodder (act 3) was the most boring, disposable junk I have ever seen. it was like French animation 'The Triplets of Beliville' (which I couldn't get past the five minute mark of), but...more pointless. However, I was determined to see this through to the end...

...and that's not a good memory, wanting to leave before the movie was over.

But I'm not an Otomo fan AT ALL, so perhaps watching a movie based off his work wasn't a good idea if I was expecting to enjoy it. However, the first two stories were extremely enthralling. They didn't need the junk that was Cannon Fodder tied on at the end.

A movie of 3 halves, that doesn’t make a lot of sense, but then, nor did the third part of this movie.

Firstly, I have to congratulate whoever came up with the 2nd episode, it was pure genius! Titled “Stink Bomb”, it’s details what happens when you make the stupidest person in the world the most deadly weapon in the world. Rarely have I wanted to punch the screen this much, the main character made me furious at his utter stupidity.

The 1st episode is the second best one but in terms of music, it’s the best. About an asteroid which contains the ruins of a late world famous opera singer. The animation of this episode was grand in every sense, maintained until the third episode, which was very out of place.

An enjoyable collection of short movies, you have to watch this just for the second episode! The first one was pretty good too, but the third lets the whole thing down. Not something ordinary, but worth a watch.

Memories is a rather odd film, in that it is split into 3 parts, “Magnetic Rose“, “Stink Bomb” and “Cannon Fodder“, each with its own levels of excellence in all categories. This makes it rather difficult to review indeed, but overall I liked the film, because with the exception of Cannon Fodder, which was comparatively poor to the other two episodes in terms of animation, character, sound etc, and definitely needed more time to develop a good story, “Memories” had excellent animation, great sound and story, and good character.

Memories is only good if you have a familiar taste for the older anime movies such as Roujin Z and Akira; and yes, they were done by the same producer Otomo Katsuhiro. My judgments on the first and last portion of it were really impressed by the terms of how expressive the film was done, espeically on Magnetic Rose of how eerie the scenery fits well within the character's own prying from inside the ship. If they didn't made the second story with Stink Bomb, then I might've given this one a better mark for the entire storyline. This movie, however, would highly varied on the terms of how you can point out what the inner meaning from each of the segments had become to sharpen the eyes and notions of the viewer. The plot and characters were not as direct as to some viewers who would have a certain hard time on knowing the gist of each part through the importance of the movie itself. However, people should at least watch this; because movies like this were known at best for their art and significance, rather than giving only a playful or action-packed story.

I got this by accident, I had never heard of it, but I still thought that I might give it a try...I watched all three episodes and I absolutely enjoyed them. They were all great, especially the first one, I liked the drawing style, more realistic than most shows (not that I dislike them, but a change is always refreshing).

PART ONE: The way this began drew me in immediately. I started to ponder more and more about what exactly is going on in that weird asteroid looking structure. Although it is wonderfully made with a great combination and visuals and music, I really don't see the point of going through this mix of science fiction and hallucinations. It is worth watching for the sake of aesthetics alone but I didn't really enjoy it because it wasn't too engaging. I dont know what they were trying to show? The frailty of humans and their attachment to memories?

PART TWO: Umm... I don't know how to explain this. The basis of this story is just lame. Furthermore, the character's behavior is just annoying. I dont know what this part aims to achieve? It certainly wasn't entertaining or humorous despite all the mishaps that happen. Blah, skip this part.

PART THREE: I didn't watch this part.
The animation was beyond what i could get used to.

Overall, this anime departs from the usual pace of what anime tries to do. It is a bunch of randomness and unexplainable actions that take place in what seems to be our world. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who wants something solid to hang onto. I can't even describe this anime into one simple sentence, its that random and unexplainable.

3 seperate stories, 3 mini-reviews

Magnetic Rose: 45 minutes long, this is a nice starter for 'Memories'. Filled with mystery, action and tension, this is my fave of the lot. The space crew finds an emergency signal in the middle of nowhere, they attempt to find the source of it but were unprepared for what they were up against. Magnetic Rose shines with its atmosphere and tension, its mysterious and psychological set up was well made and enjoyable to watch. Top notch Animation for a 1996 anime with careful attention to detail makes this the best of the bunch.

Stink Bomb: Hilarious, stupid and scary at the same time. A man swallows a pill, which made him into a walking biological weapon. However, he is oblivious to this fact and the fact that everyone/thing around him is dying. i hate this character...
However, the anime is hilarious as the world can't stop this stupid guy. Though somewhat funny in the anime, a deeper thought in this is actually kind fo scary as this one man can kill anybody without doing anything. The second best of the bunch and should be seen for laughter value

Cannon Fodder: 20-25 minutes long, this strange artistic, war-type anime shows life of a family in a war-ridden world in which their lives are to help aid the island fight against their enemy by making bombs or preparing cannons. Though somewhat boring and short, the unique animation and direction has its moment, the grand detail of thigns were nice to look at but else, provided nothing of all sorts. What this short tries to tell us is how war affects the country and whatnot. Not powerful enough message coupled with downright boringness makes this the worst of the bunch.

Overall: 7/10
Grade: B-

I am not entirely sure how to review this objectively, so I'll just present a succinct review of each of the three sections.

Magnetic Rose was my favorite of the three stories, as many people who have posted reviews also say. Next to the other two, much more lighthearted features, it felt unfortunately out of place; however, its enthralling atmosphere, strong premise and beautiful operatic music made it a worthwhile experience for me. Visually this is probably the most consistent of the three stories, and furthermore it is also the only of the three that fits in with the main theme of the movie. (Memories, for the record.) Between the wonderful music by Yoko Kanno and Satoshi Kon's excellent directing, it is clear that Magnetic Rose was the story that was bid the most attention. To be honest I think I would have been happiest with this lengthened to a 90 minute feature and then maybe have Cannon Fodder as an omake at the end.

Stink Bomb was a decently amusing but inconsistently developed idea. For the first fifteen minutes of the movie I thought it was supposed to be a survivalist horror story, but then as the comedy started to kick in I was quickly jarred out of this mind frame. It was pretty funny when it got to the motorbike part, but overall a fairly predictable story. Visually Stink Bomb is probably the least attractive of the three, though still quite solidly animated.

Cannon Fodder was visually the most intriguing of the stories in its own stylistic way, but too cryptic and overphilosophical of a premise for me to appreciate. Coming out of the much more simple Stink Bomb and Magnetic Rose, I was slammed with a surprising dose of territorialism and anti-war messages. This idea was supported in a rather unentertaining manner, and more times than one I found my interest waning. Still, with a little more realization this probably could have been a lot better than it actually was.

As a whole, I would recommend Memories; since the stories are unrelated it's easy to guiltlessly watch one then come back to another later (I took breaks between all three myself). However, the sum of the parts does create a somewhat uneven-keeled result, and one would probably appreciate Memories the most viewing it in three doses.

This movie is comprised of three high quality shorts that are worth a rental. Since the episodes are unrelated I will give a brief synopsis of each.

Magnetic Rose: Very realistic art and solid characters are this anime’s strongpoint. It’s amazing how quickly the characters are developed (if you pay close attention you can see how the creators did it). The art is done very realistically and offers some beautiful character designs, machines and settings. The story is decent, nothing incredibly gripping but still enjoyable. It borrows themes from “2001 A Space Odyssey but has it’s own elements that play off of the stunning visuals resulting in some decent material. Although musically sparse, the sound is well done. The voices and sound effects are very fitting, I do wish there was more music because the short moody pieces sound really good, but it’s a short film so there’s not much time for long segments and songs.

Stink Bomb: This is my favorite of the three; it combines comedy with a really goofy main character and in the process reinvents the classic “monster making its way toward Tokyo theme. The art matches the hilarious mood perfectly, the facial expressions are great and much like the first episode the art is top quality. The music lightens the mood after the more serious “Rose and the voice work and sounds are again top notch. The music in this episode is perfect—can’t stress it enough—this is my type of comedy! It couldn’t have been easy making this much death and destruction funny but somehow it works.

Cannon Fodder: This episode explores war and seems to question its motivations by presenting a setting that’s the epitome of the wartime economy at work. The art is very experimental looking yet very fluid and of high quality. The characters don’t really get developed but I feel that the creators instead wished for the viewer to absorb the essence of the place. The sounds are fitting, nothing really spectacular but they get the point across. I see this ep. as more of a moving painting of a city so involved in war that it’s incapable of knowing anything else.

Overall—I recommended you rent this or see for free—comedy and monster movie fans shouldn’t miss Stink Bomb!

The seperate stories are quite different, and really, I fail to see the connection between them all.

That said: 1. (Magnetic Rose) was really good. good story, great animation, good music, nice and haunting. even though it's short, it pulls you in fast. Good ending with the rose.

2. (Stink Bomb) was just silly, and still was funny in spots. the music was good and appropriate, animation good, and you get the crazy anime exaggration of military power buildup. Add a nice little twist at the end, and you get a good 45 minute diversion.

3. (Boring) was boring. we have seen the dystopian future. we have read 1984 and Fahenheit 451. This brought nothing to table story wise, and while the animation is good, it was also ugly(most likely on purpose). I did like the circular story. thats about it. it was short, so that was good.

Over all, a mixed bag. I would recommend it just for the first piece. but stick around for the rest too.

There are three seperate stories, so its hard to rate them as a single unit.

Magnetic Rose was a brilliant look at an undying love/obsession that could survive even the cold empty depths of space.

Stinkbomb was a comedy of errors transposed to a near-future period with biological research gone awry.

Cannon Fodder was the shortest of the three, and in my opinion, had little more than a basic idea. Not much was built off of it, and you gained the least by watching it.

If you are going to watch any of them, watch the episode to the end. Each one has a bit of a surprise ending.

As you can see this is 3 short movies in 1. Kinda like the Animatrix. There is some really nice imagery in the 1st and 3rd parts, the 2nd is ok but its a bit too hyperactive for me, perhaps a bit over the top. This anime has a very humanistic animation style to it in all 3 parts, not your typical cutesy anime character designs. which is a nice little breath of fresh air.

Three episode - Good story but lack a good ending to the story.
The first episode "Magnetice Roses" got me entertain for the plots and music ( done by Yoko Kanno.)Still when you finish this episode ,some people surprise when it show 'The End' and say 'that is!?'...lack an ending do piss you off for this good story and visual art for this episode.
The second episode is toward silly but funny story-side, even the theme music i feel like listen to the 85' year music... Some scene was funny but the casts were "Dumb and Dumber". They never learn their lesson in the end. Still lack an ending to tell you what will the world be if this go on.
Now the last episode is using a different art style, music, story theme and director ways of display scene to another scene without cutting the views (Look deep and you find the director show scene to the next scene without skip out the camera or jump to another angle, just strafe around the scene or zoom out then zoom in or spin out and in during day dreaming scene.) This one give you a feel about war but not telling you who the enemy is they fighting, just a family of three is a day life. No ending need for this cause when they wake up, is just another day doing the same as yesterday.

"I am assuming that you've already read the plot outline"

The first story is pretty entertaining work, which i would have loved watching as a full 90 min movie. It felt like there could have been more things happening and more twists on the story, but in a way it is very skillful to give a viewing experience like this in only 45 mins. The story is wellplanned and got some more or less unexpected turns, especially the end was a bit more "devastating" than i could guess. The subtle details in animation and sound makes this story very enjoyable and a good pick.

Story 7/10

The second story was stupid. Plain stupid. Its hard to know if it tries to be a thriller/horror or a comedy. Well it doesnt cut it in any of those categories. The whole story was so predictable i was just sitting and waiting for it to end (of course i knew HOW it would end, no suprises there).. And how in gods name can a medical research worker be so dumb not to realize he is killing everyone? This is a 45 min waste of your life.

Story 1/10

The third story is not really a story but more a futuristic vision of what could be the normal life of a family.. The atmosphere got a WWII feeling to it, especially the factory scene where you can read "No Conquest Without Labor" on a sign and the various posters stuck around the city, all of them looking quite alot like the propaganda used back then. Note the foremans resemblance to Hitler. The feeling of neverending strife with a unknown enemy really makes this part the most intense experience of the three. World War III is here.

Overall : The first and the last parts are very nice stories, solid animations and satisfying sound. Part nr 2 is just a bad filler and drags the overall impression down quite a bit, considering its 1/3 of the movie..
If i was just to grade the 1rst and 3rd parts, the overall would have been around 8.

Hope you found this somehow useful

Starting with Magnetic Rose. Not too bad, it has its moments. Unfortunately, rather than making it horror, Otomo went the way of Akira toward the end: pointless stuff breaking, moving inanimate objects, oh... and utter stupid "sci-fi" crap. (No offense to good sci-fi titles.) Now I remember why I hated Akira. Too bad.

Next up... Stink Bomb. Just freaking stupid. Summed up as a moron causes problems due to his utter, incomprehensible stupidity. In fact, everyone is really stupid. I guess its supposed to be funny. It's not. I really wanted to skip this, but I like hurting myself... it really is that bad... Wow, its almost as long as Magnetic Rose. What a waste. This is quite possibly the worst anime ever, right next to Sin and Armageddon.

Finally, Cannon Fodder. Right now I've lost any appreciatation for this, but I'll try to be impartial. I find the style of art interesting. It's rather unique, but not my cup of tea. As for the story, I can think of quite a few underlying, meaningful themes for this show. Nothing I haven't heard of already. For the sake of simply viewing, this was rather boring. It certainly gave me time to think of what I more productive things I should be accomplishing.

Am I being too harsh? I don't think so. I believe Otomo is the Kubrick of animation. Interpret that as you wish.

Memories is made up of 3 different movies. Each having nothing to do with the other, so more than likely you will like one of them. "Magnetic Rose" is the 1st one. I'd have to say the most tense. You never know what to expect. I think it's the music that really gets you into it. The 2nd, "Stink Bomb" grabs you right from the begining. Although lot's a death in it, it's probably the brightest and funniest of the 3. I viewed it as more of a comedy. The first time I heard the theme song I didn't know what to think, then it just grew on me. I ended up really enjoying it. Finally there's "Cannon Fodder". Out of the 3, this one i enjoyed the least. It seemed very intentional that they wanted you to think hard about the who's, what's, and where's, but in the end it really just got boring and left me clueless. It's different... Over all the first 2 were done so well that I wasn't let down at all.

"Memories" is the collection of three short features, each originally created by Katsuhiro Otomo, (AKIRA, Roujin Z) and belongs in the collection of every anime fan. The first film "Magnetic Rose" is one of the more amazingly done anime features I've seen. Written by Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Paranoia Agent) and music by Yoko Kanno, this atmosphere, mystery, and story really draws you in and simply keeps you impacted after it ends.

"Stink Bomb" is a more light-hearted feature, and really had a fantastically-done chase scene and certainly was a fun one to watch all the way up to the end.

Lastly, Otomo himself directed "Cannon Fodder." It shows the routine daily life of a family who's existence revolves around firing huge cannons to an unknown enemy. I saw huge potential in this one, but unfortunately, it ends abruptly and that potential is never reached.

Overall, "Memories" is just simply great. The video and sound quality is some of the best in anime, and these collection of three short films is essential to own.
