Canaan is a 13 episode action adventure anime released in 2009. Despite having excellent production values and several interesting plot twists, Canaan falls short in its storyline leaving much to be desired.

There is no doubt that the graphics and animation in Canaan is top notch. The character designs are gorgeous and detailed, the scenery well animated, and the use of CG is excellent to behold. From a graphical perspective Canaan is ranked among the best.

The theme songs are quite different in my opinion, but some viewers might enjoy them. I don't find that the songs fit in with the storyline and style of Canaan, although they are performed to an admirable level. There is nothing wrong with the quality of the voice acting, but some of the dialogue they speak are quite annoying, and the names of some of the characters get on my nerve. Therefore, in my opinion, Canaan ultimately falls short in its audio.

Canaan has a main storyline which is promising, but never becomes interesting. Some side stories are exciting and contain some fascinating twists, but the main storyline is quite stale. In fact, some of the side stories are so incredibly emotional that they make the main storyline appear even less significant and highly predictable.

Character development in Canaan can be described as flaky at best. Most of the characters receive very limited development, and the development that do take place are oftentimes confusing. The behaviour of the characters are also inconsistent, and the anime fails to explain these changes clearly. Nevertheless, the cast is well voiced, although not well named in my opinion, and some are very interesting to watch.

In summary, Canaan is an anime with excellent animation and very interesting moments. However, it will most likely leave most viewers disappointed, as it does not manage to deliver in its main storyline and its character development. In spite of all this, I would still recommend Canaan to most viewers, since it has some fascinating side stories and highly amusing characters. From the ending, Canaan does give the impression that a sequel is to follow. If that is the case, the sequel should be a much better anime, as it will be able to build on top of the foundations that has been laid by Canaan.

Canaan, one of the Fall season's best animes, is about (I sometimes miss this one when relying on fansubs ~~) a biological experiment searching for her lost humanity. The problem with Canaan is that it does this SO well... but it really is the same apple. Nothing really separates Canaan from it's ilk, oh it's a thrill ride and deserves it's spot as one of the best of 09... but it's just not different.

I really enjoyed the anime personally. It has an incredible and very unique story. I also found no lack of action but not too much that it was just left the plot behind like you often see in action based anime. I would highly recommend this anime to anyone who was a fan of the Gunslinger Girls or Noir series.
