Pokemon has been running for quite a while now. Being one who missed the poke-rage back when it was new, mainly because i instantly dismissed it as a silly kids show, i never quite got what was so special about it.
Then finally, out of the blue on the spur of the moment i downloaded all 10 first seasons of the english dub of it and started watching.
It is now several weeks later, and im well into the 10:th season, over 480 eps watched, and i think i now have a pretty good handle on why this is still running.

To start out, yes, this is a kids show. The producers take absolutely no risk with any kind of original plot or character development, and instead goes all for the cuteness appeal, and try to milk it for all its worth. The story consists basically only of Ash and his friends wandering from location to location, fighting other pokemon and earning gym badges (just like in the games). On the way the "evil" Team Rocket try to make life for Ash miserable using all kinds of goofy plots and conveniently mail-ordered super robots, consistently always failing and "blasting off" at the end of the episode.
The story slightly changes to showcase the new features introduced in the new pokemon games as the seasons go on. Character development, as mentioned, is virtually non-existant apart from the first couple of seasons. In many episodes Ash is seen to learn something, and then a few eps later he shows that he has in fact not learned anything at all. Virtually all the human characters in this show are stereotypical, monotone and uninteresting, and especially Ash. The music is average, doing a decent job of it, but not standing out on any fronts, and the Animation is overall rushed and shoddy. It is clear from the get go that they aim for sheer episode volume rather than visual quality.

So... Why watch it?

Two things:

1, For the pokemon.
Looking back on those hundreds of episodes i realize that the only thing that kept me wanting to watch more was to see the antics of the pokemon in Ash's party, their development and learning of new moves. If it wasnt for the pokemon actually learning, getting better and evolving into new forms, this show would have nearly nothing going for it at all.
The thrown in introductions of new types of pokemon means very little, but the ones that do join up show infinitely more depth than their human trainers.

2: Because of Team Rocket.
Oh sure, they're loony criminals who couldnt succeed at "evil" even if they were handed a BFG9000 and had all the minions of hell at their command, but they do have redeeming points that makes them much better than the supposed heroes of the show.
First off, they actually make attempts at being funny. While Ash stays his insecure, easily provoked and disturbingly easily fooled self throughout hundreds of episodes, Team Rocket learns from several of their mistakes and improves upon them. Sure, they never win anyway but in most cases thats due to the script being against them and not because their plan is bad. In many cases ive noticed their scheme is actually sound, and their getaway is all but complete, but the script always makes sure the heroes win due to whatever silly thing the writers thought of at the moment. The show seems to want to convey the notion that "crime doesnt pay" or "stealing makes you a loser", but its too painfully obvious that they only lose because the producers wanted them to, logic be damned. The best eps of the series are easily recognizable since Team Rocket dont blast off in them, which in turn means they're doing something different other than failing to steal Pikachu.
Secondly, their motto always makes me smile. With the exception of a particulary stale period during the second half of the first series generation (season 3-5), the witty variations in it from ep to ep gets really funny.

All in all, the series has its highlights and funny moments, but is mired by an almost non-existant plot, no character development at all for the main heroes and an overreliance on making Team Rocket blast off from Pikachus lightning (because everybody knows that electricity explodes, right?).
However, i'd still recommend watching this to people who can get over the PSA-theme of the filler eps and stupididy of Ash. Because, yknow... Cute fluffy fantasy animals beating the snot out of eachother? Whats not to like? :P
If nothing else, try out the games. They're actually really good, and unlike the anime series they aren't designed specifically for kids.

NOTE: A few of the pokemon movies tie in to certain events in the TV series, and in every one of them the background story elements are assumed to be known. If you intend to watch any Pokemon movie, it is assumed that you're already watching this series.

Pokemon was cute at first, but it grew WAY too long WAY too quickly. I'm pretty sure a good majority of people have at least heard of pokemon and I recommend watching the first few arcs for the curious but once they went past the original 151 or so, I had outgrown the series.
I'm reviewing based off the original series dubbed up to and including the Pokemon League with Ash.

Pokemon was one of those anime shows that introduced more kids into the world of anime than any other anime at its showcase. The first few series were quite interesting to watch, but after watching two leagues (or seasons the US dub calls), there is no more of the "new" excitement feeling that most anime brings to me.

Not really enjoyable. This anime has too many episodes in where Ash(english name) either learns a lesson, challenge some one to a pokemon match, or meet with Team Rocket. After watching a billion episodes the "We're blasting off again!" gag gets old even though they try to alter it a litttle. Not really original, it is like One Piece or Naruto, become king of the pirates, and hokage(leader of village of ninjas) is similar to becoming a pokemon master. You might not want to rewatch all the episodes of pokemon that are all literary the same. I'm not even sure how many episodes there are, is it still running?! Basically Ash goes around challenging people to pokemon battles so he could grow stronger and eventally become a pokemon master, which is not happening anytime soon because the company is pumping out more half-baked episodes to make money! They keep on adding pokemon to get cuteness points from people. If you like cute stuff, if you want to learn a lesson, or rehear a same old gag go watch this anime.

I feel like reviewing this after a surf through the Wiki... Based on the first season (~80 episodes) and several random episodes after that.

So basically, nearly every kid in Japan and America was watching this back in 1999, when Pokemon swept the nation and became the billion-dollar franchise it is today. Every week was worth waiting for as the next episode depicts our heroes' journey to become the ultimate Pokemon Master. Each episode was action-packed and filled with morals and lessons any kid would absorb in an upbeat. In nearly every episode, we get to see the gang find ways to counter the mischievous Team Rocket while solving various people's problems. Gym Leader battles were exciting every ~9 episodes, familiar places from the game show up every so often, and each adventure gave more way to more imagination of the Pokemon world.

Several arcs were brilliant - the first 5 episodes, the St. Anne tragedy, and most of the Gym Leader battles. Otherwise, it consisted mostly of fillers that have little to do with the main plot but serves as a way to expand the Pokemon universe. Our heroes, mainly Ash, change throughout the story (though all sense of development is abandoned when they stay the same age and when they go over 80 episodes), loyalty is tested through several Pokemon, and the BIG EVIL is shown throughout the series in the form of Giovanni, who seems to be very composed despite the fact he hasn't fired his incompetent underlings yet.

As the "final" arc approaches with the tournament in the northwest-corner of the region, I got excited with the prospects that Ash Ketchum would get his goal and a satisfying conclusion will end this popular series. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Instead, he wasn't strong enough (most of his Pokemon aren't even past the first evolutionary stage lol) and lost to some guy with a Pikachu named Sparky (I think; I can't remember), and he is forced to go on more adventures to "train" his Pokemon so that one day he may become stronger.

This lead the gang to go to Prof. Oak for more oppurtunities for adventure - in the form of the Orange Islands. And that's where it hit me - the series is going to milk for all it's worth, it will drag on with the same pace for another hundred+ episodes, the Pokemon will NEVER get stronger, and our heroes will NEVER become Pokemon Masters. And that's when I decided to stop following the show but instead kept playing the more awesome game.

The fights rely on logic. That's okay, but not when there were 100+ episodes of the Pokemon getting stronger and stronger. It does not make sense, no matter how much logic, that Pikachu at lv65 loses to some other Pokemon whose level is probably only lv20, counting 2-type and environmental advantage. No way.

Years later, I check on the episode guide for curiousity's sake. It was at 200+ episodes in another region and shows no signs of stopping.

Several movies (I count 4) came out. I watched 2 of them, with no interest in the last two.

And thus ends my interest in Pokemon, a great series when I was a kid, a nostalgic memory years later.

As for now, this is a waste of your time. You should have caught on the craze 8 years ago.

While the first series of Pokemon showed promise, unfortunately it was cut short as it was decided that Pokemon would become nothing more than a cheap marketing ploy.

I'm going to review this just for old time's sake. This review is from the perspective of my own 10 year old self, while I was watching it. If I do recall accurately, I thought that this show was pretty ... good!

If I were to review this anime with the knowledge that I've watched dozens of other animes, this one would pretty much be trounced to the ground 100 meters deep in a coffin, but this anime isn't for guys like me; it's for children!

What I do remember were characters like Ash, Misty, and Brock travelling from place to place, looking for ... something. I don't know. I guess Ash wanted to be a Pokemon master or something like that. I played the video game on the good ol' game boy, and I loved it when Ash had a gym battle because it matched up to the story in the game. But darn, why didn't he ever catch and raise a Magikarp for it to evolve in a Gyrados?

The animation was grainy, but acceptable, the sound was decent. The characters were pretty one dimensional, but back when I watched it, I thought that they were all ambitious in their own ways. I wonder if Ash ever became the great Pokemon master he said that he was going to be.

I value this anime not for artistic or reasons relating to quality, but because of it's sentimental value and how I can watch an episode of Pokemon and get myself carried way back when I was still in elementary school, trotting around with my game boy, looking to trade my Kadabra so that it could evolve into an Alakazam. I still remember all 150 pokemon. The next 100 gets a bit unclear, but I remember that I did love that game and that lovely TV show that aired every Saturday.

Quite an annoying anime at first glance, because the storyline does not go according to what's realistic, but according to what seems dramatic or what the fans will like. This concept starts off okay, except it gets overboard when Ash/Satoshi starts becoming the center of attention of the Pokemon world for some reason.

Despite that, Pokemon cannot be too severely undermined because A LOT of people were crazy about it.
When it first came out, I believe it was the originality that captured the audience's attention. Having 150 different Pokemon to begin with was a great list of 'characters' and innovative impressions. However, as time wore on, it became clear that such an "original" storyline was going to happen over and over again. It became nothing but repetition and lost all its freshness, so Pokemon ended up using its originality too much to betray itself.

The 1st season is very good and enjoyable. However, like all animations and television shows that contains 100s of episodes, it became boring in the end. Unlike Digimon, which changed characters over seasons, Pokemon's characters mostly stayed the same (Ash, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, Team Rocket, Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny). Although the lastest season added some new characters, they did not work well because the plot of the story is still the same as before (to tell the truth, May is not as good as Misty). So, to conclude everything, sorry to the Pokemon fans, but it seems like it's time for Pokemon to draw its curtain...

This is a 3rd rate Anime at best that for some stupid reason was passed off as something more and was given all the publicity in the world.I'm glad the hype of this show didnt stay up through it's last episode's like other Anime's have managed to do.The last thing this planet need's is more Pokemon episode's.I didnt even like this when I was younger the concept of catching animal's and some how shoving them into tiny ball's and using them to fight eachother with out the owner having to do any major physical work just never appealed to me.I'm all for imaginitive Anime's but only to a certain extent .I gave the Animation higher mark's however because although they are non-exesistant the Pokemon are kinda cute-_-But C'mon Satoshi had a million chances to become a pokemon master and end the show but NO they had to make it nothing but never ending crap!

Pokemon would have been a good show, if it had only stuck with its first season that is. But then it decided to overuse concepts and themes over and over again that it just got plain boring. The first episode I would rate highly, since it's so awesome. And the episodes to follow after were quite awesome. But when the same thing happens for another twelve seasons or so, it's just really nothing special at all. Too bad we can't review individual seasons or episodes, because it's sad to see that the first season can't be recognized because the others are dragging it down.

Basically, Ash is a Pokemon trainer who wants to become the world's greatest Pokemon master. He starts off with Pikachu, and slowly builds up his collection of Pokemon. In order to compete in the ultimate league, where the truest and strongest trainers reside, he'll have to collect qualifying badges from around the region in order to enter. During his travels, Ash, along with his many different comrades, will encounter people in need, which they'll get in their way to help until their problems are solved.

There are few good fights in Pokemon, but when the elite Pokemon battles are featured, such as Magmar and Charizard, they're awesome. What really irritated eventually is how in every single episode, Team Rocket, a trio of theifs who deeply covet Ash's most treasured Pokemon Pikachu, is sent into the skies in defeat. This happens EVERY SINGLE EPISODE!!! You'd think after 200 times they'll learn their lesson and target an easier Pokemon.

The charm of Pokemon is the bonds shared between Ash and his Pokemon. Though it's frustrating to see when he creates more and more bonds that you forget what Pokemon who he actually has. There's just TOO much of these bonds to make it satisfying. As I said before, if it ran only its first season, then it would meet a satisfying mark, but it just overdid it.

Well, I'm not a big fan of Pokemon. I actually think it's kind of kiddy for some reasons. It's just annoying how they make more and more Pokemons. Drives me nuts.

I also feel bad how trainers treat their Pokemons. Sure, they love their Pokemon and gives the their needs, but it's not right to use their pet for battles just to get those stupid badges and also, all they care about is to be the "best Pokemon Master". I don't see any teamwork except when they battle 2 on 2.

I don't get why they never change Team Rocket. In my opinion, they annoy me because everytime I watch Pokemon,... Most of the time they are always there and ends up getting blasted off. They also need to change that.

That's my opinion for now. I don't get why they have to take Misty away. ;_;

This is a great anime for all ages. It's entertaining and it has some great morals. I watch the Japanese version and it's awsome.

This has got to be a thumbs up on the animation. I compared some of the more recent episodes to the first episode that ever came out and I have to say that it's top notch. 3D effects have made it's way into this anime though I'm not sure if the effects will be cut out. I hope they won't get cut out in the dub. People ofen call the animation generic but I don't think it's generic at all. It's wonderful animation and the quality is great.

The songs are wonderful! The original music is some of the best songs I've heard. I love the insert songs. It's a shame that 4Kids cut out the insert songs and replaced it with their dub music.

The storyline has really progressed. The one thing that I noticed reviewers don't pay attention to is the new stuff that comes out. They just introduced contests and contest battles, 6 on 6 battling (spoiler alert), 2 on 2 battling, some new strategys, and all this other stuff. I still don't get why people don't see this stuff.

The characters seems the most interesting to me though. When I compared the first episode to the newest season I noticed that some of the characters have changed. Satoshi/Ash 's knowledge and maturity levels has risen quite a bit then when he first started his journey. Kasumi/Misty leaves but she appers in some episodes and I found that she has matured as well, I think she became a fine gym leader. Takeshi hasn't changed much still is always a good part of the group. Haruka/May gets quite a bit of character development as she went from a girl who hates Pokemon to an awsome coordinator and trainer that loves Pokemon. Masato/Max is a nice character also, though there isn't much to say about him, he's still a nice character to have around.

What seems most surprising to me is that the anime is still getting fresh new episodes. That's one of the things I love about it. You really can't predict what's gonna happen next, just wait till it comes out.

Overall this is a great show. I don't care how much people bash it either. I love it and I won't ditch it anytime soon like others did in the past.

LOL I love how people just love to criticize Pokemon. Geez seriously people, just because you're too old for it doesn't mean that Pokemon is actually a bad show. Ok, it does get repetitive and the show goes on and on without ever ending, but based on the first season, it was GOOD. That first season alone would have probably deserved a rating of at least, let's say, an 8 on average. But because fillers are now a majority of the episodes, Pokemon lost its touch and now only airs these seemingly pointless episodes to advertise the games, the products and obviously the new Pokemon that keeps on coming out into existence. It's a kid's show, but some people can be a little honest and say that it's not actually that bad at all. Lighten up people, stop criticizing something you grew up with and if you hate it, don't rate it just to give it a bad rating.

Pokemon, wat do i think of when i hear that name?
considering i USE to be a huge fan, i got knocked into my senses, im too old, and the story isn't getting anywhere.
this anime use to be really popular until they made over 100 episodes or so. it just plummeted downhill, everyone wanted the series to finish!
ash should of been a pokemon master at the end of series one. the creators didn't have to continue making series 2, 3, 4, 5 ,6 7 and i think 8! they're slowly making more money as ppl waste their time watching a show that isn't getting anywhere. now there's, what? about 400 pokemon? if there isn't now, there will be soon.
the animation went from dull and not-blinding to really bright and blinding.
story, i think iv said enough already
sound, whoops almost missed that.
through out, the ENTIRE SERIES they are repeating the same songs, even if they remade the song to make it seem more 'now' it's still annoying. team rocket's motto is really getting old too, even when they say something different each time.
character... ash's ego is puffed up too much, he should really get his head deflated before it explodes.
it's a pity misty left and was replaced with may. misty was awesome, but then again may isn't so bad.
max, may's lil bro, is annoying, he's repeating info from the pokedex, we've got the machine for that buddy.
brock, always after the ladies *sigh* kinda old now, sorry to break it to ya.
the characters havn't developped much after all they've been through.
value, if might of been worth something a while back. it's lost it's value as the years go by.
enjoyment: i guess it's still enjoyable. if it's an episode i havn't seen and it isn't a filler. (which is pretty rare now). id give this anime to viewers with a lower age range. about 5-10.

There are many books written in separate universes, but only a few come off as memorable. Star Wars and Lord of the Rings are good examples. Like books, there are manga and anime written in separate universes. Pokemon is one of them, and this separates it from all the other kids anime out there. Based off the incredibly popular GameBoy games, Pokemon helped anime find its place with American audiences.

I'll review the Kanto Arc, since I believe this encompasses what Pokemon was really about. It's also the series I've seen most of, so it'll be a more accurate review.

This show irks me to the core, thanks to it repeated lines and dry plot. Initially, it was a pleasure to watch it but after the first series, everything went down the hill. It seems that the characters keep travelling to get to somewhere, but get sidetracked along the way by somebody needing help. And then Team Rocket jumps in to try to steal their Pokemon, and as usual their plans get thwarted. The next thing you know they are "blasting off again". And then it's a happy ending. I got so sick of this 'as usual' type of ending for every episode that I totally quit watching it. So there you have it, a show that nice to watch in the beginning, but dulls your senses after repeated scenes.

This anime is horrendous in all aspects. The characters are as linear as they come, comedy does not work, same punch lines and plots are used in... well... EVERY EPISODE, and well... it is just not that interesting when everything is so incredibly repetitive.

In a really bad anime like this its hard to write a lote. Tis anime is bad. Animation is as generic as they come. Music is nothing special.

I think i can summarize this animes flaw in one word REPETITIVE. You can not have a anime that's 200 plus episodes and have 260 of them be a filler that have exactly the same plot. it just doesn't work.

if you wanna watch something that's worth your time this isn't it. i rather put a bucket on my head and beat it with a stick and have more fun. But if you have a annoying little brother or sister wo just won't stop talking this anime might do the trick.

There's no surprise that this anime is rated so low, I mean, these days everyone is just too 'cool' to watch Pokemon. Admit it, we all liked this when we were kids, (though I still am one) but hey, I still love this anime. It's actually one of my favorites. Pokemon season one is FUNNY AS HECK, I mean I was rolling on the floor laughing. Don't call me stupid, people who give this all ones just think they are too cool to watch 'kid' shows. Seriously, you make me sick. Be honest people, no animation should get a one unless they don't move at all. No story should get a one unless there IS no story. Pokemon has a story. Satoshi (or Ash) wants to become a Pokemon Master. There you go, 100% story. Think about it, it's more story than Azumanga Daioh has, yet that anime gets an 8.3 for story. Why? Because Azumanga Daioh isn't for kids. I really hate saying this, but people like you should um, die. =( Animation= Best animation for a kids show ever, and Destiny Deoxis animation is flawless. Sound = Excellent sound effects and pokemon sounds are adorable. Story = Kawaii. Character= Pokemon are the cutest thingies ever. Value = I want it.
Enjoyment= I love it. There you go. Best anime ever right here, no questions asked. Pokemon is a classic.
