After watching the first episodes I was impressed and thought the series would be one of the most memorable. Unfortunately not all episodes were good and some of them were boring.

Still as an anime trying to narrate the love stories of 12 individual girls in 12 separate episodes, Sentimental Journey does quite well. Except the first episde I also liked the one with the girl in the train and the one with the girl who was prepared for an audition. The rest were watchable but I wouldnt rewatch them.

Since it was based on a video-game I think it is better than Kiminozu in many things, but problem is the way of narration is a little experimental and doesnt appeal to many viewers. I had some problems watching this title too.

Animation is OK for an 1997 title. Nothing spectacular, just simply animated characters.
OP and ED are also catchy.

Now regarding characters, considering there are so many in a 12 episode series the anime does well and each episodes features a different girl and the character developement suffices for 23 minutes.

Each episodes focuses on different aspects of romance so the series will appeal to all viewers, though I find it hard that you'll like all the episode.

Still if you've watched Kiminozu you could watch this alternative, and much better in my opinion, approach

Sentimental Journey is a collection of short OVAs about 12 girls' expiriences with love. In reality, it will not appeal much to the modern anime fan, but to the die hard veteran, it is a masterpiece.

Each of the twelve OVAs revolves around a girl, and every OVA tells how a certain boy from the past influences the girl's life in the present. The relationships vary from passing aquaintance, to intimate partner.

Sentimental Journey is in the purest sense a mixed bag. No two episodes can be directly compared to one another, they're all that different. The only thing connecting them is a faceless man that was in each girls past (a different guy each time BTW). I have a feeling that no one, including myself, will be 100% satisfied with every episode. Some are very philsophical, others science fiction and some romantic comedies. I found some episodes and girls dull beyond help, and other so facsinating that they could've carried their own series double the length of this.

With that said, this is one of the most ambitious and unique anime projects I can think of, dating sim genre or not. I think everyone should give it a try, just so they can try out so many different genres in one outstanding series. Don't let the entire series being avaliable in one bargain priced DVD set in North America fool you - this is one of the lost gems to hit the West.

Sentimental Journey is a unique anime series, because each of its twelve episodes is an entirely self-contained story. Each episode is the story of a high school girl and her memories of a boy who moved away when she was a child, and how that memory has affected her later in life. Some episodes and stories and better than others, as you'd expect in a series like this, but several of them were really compelling, and held up well after repeat watchings. All the girls are kawaii, which makes sense because they're all based on characters from a dating sim game. The boy from the past doesn't actually appear in any of the episodes, except in flashbacks, though--the focus is definitely on the girls in the present and the little challenges they face, like Manami overcoming an illness, or Taeko trying to set up two of her friends to go on a date. It's just a really cute, fun collection of stories to watch, and its focus on just everyday life is a nice change of pace from some other anime series.
