| gg fansubs (recorded off tv), 12 episodes
Well other than the obvious facts you can get from previous reviewers and the describtion, I went into BKMGTI (you know what I mean), unfortunately, expecting COMEDY with my ROMANCE!! WHERE THE HECK IS THE COMEDY IN MY ROMANCE?!!!!
Contrary to all the non-descript descriptions that I've ever seen, detailing the first minute or so of the first episode. THAT is NOT what this series is ABOUT. Whoever's job it is should be FIRED because this is PRECISELY why I hated it! (well, this and that...) Well this series IS more of a spirit detectives (think more ghost hunters/ loki than Yu Yu Hakusho :x) series than what I had expected :x.
That would have been allright, I like a vast field of animes, but for a few BAD elements that pervade the series that EVERYBODY seems to LOVE! Scuse my assinine assumption, but IMO the only reason they LOVE this show is cuz it's the best of the season and they want something to clamor onto, that saying, is it all that bad?? definitely NOT. But I just feel 1) the jokes are SO sour (ofc they only, and rarely is the case cuz the main char is about the only one with a sense of humor it seems, go for that kind of comedy any way) and 2) there is no real foundation and no real end! Though there are 3 'web episodes' AND 1 'true' episode still to be released! All us Shana fans know how relevant THAT can be, they've fleshed out the story all they can, that's all folks! I'll update if anything changes but like the last poster said, I doubt if it will :x
One more before I get into the REAL review. THIS IS A SERIES OF SEASONS, NOT JUST 1! So of coarse there is no end! It's not gonna end! That's semi-ok with me, I was never picky on ends anyway ^_^ What's more is there is no begining because the begining wasn't quite made yet. Is it planned? possibly nobody knows. Probably since clips of it are in the 1st op -_-. And it looks a ton more BA than this series I tell you. It'll probably be short though, like ROD OVA compared to the TV series IMO.
ANYWAY

| Episode 1 ONLY
The animation on this series is certainly up-to-date. It has a feeling very similar to Zetsubo Sensai, but not quite. There are stills and slow motion used. The shots are random and seem to me more realistic of the way humans see the world. From the animation, it becomes clear that like all anime there will be overt sexism against women. For instance, it starts with a long panty shot and a woman’s breasts are shakin in the opening credits. However, something I do like about the animation on the women. The weightless girl, who is supposed to be more attractive, actually seems more attractive. Not in the downright obvious way, but in the little nuances of facial shadows and angles that most artists cannot seem to catch. I think they actually realized in this show that attractiveness in people can be only a slight difference from everyone else.
The opening credits are done in a slow-motion montage style. The song has no lyrics, but is sort of a suspenseful/horror sound. The ending song is significantly better. The lyrics have this happy, speedy sound to them.
The story is about an ex-vampire who catches a girl who happens to be near weightless. Because he has discovered her secret, she threatens him if he tells. However, he decides to take her to the guy who helped him overcome vampirism. Certainly psy-fi elements, but it’s set up to feel more suspense/horror driven. I have yet to watch further, but I will update later.
The main character, the ex-vampire, seems kind of monotone, like he doesn’t seem to really care about anything. He has that unaffected speech that a lot of guys in anime are shown having; as though they are separate from what goes on in the world. The weightless girl, who has the aurora of sweetness, is in reality a very tough, crude woman who could destroy any man. In that sense, she is not how you would think she is. The man who cured him of his vampirism appears as a surfer, but acts more like a mix of a surfer/gangster. I guess what I’m trying to say is a drug-dealer, because that is what I imagine if you combine the two. Then there is the class president, who is to be me the most normal person presented so far. Other than that, there have been no characters introduced thus far.
As this is only the first episode, I have to continue watching to discover the series further. However, not initially very appealing.

| Note: This review is based on gg fansubs. Can't complain about quality or translation, but some signs aren't translated in the first few episodes, and the fact that they don't cut out commercials from an encode is... quite annoying. Incidentally, it appears that three more episodes of Bakemonogatari are yet to follow, so I will update my review once they are out (though it's unlikely anything but story score could be affected).
Quote:
Curses, like chickens, come home to roost.
Originally written as a series of light novels by Nishio Ishin (Katanagatari) and directed by Shinbou Akiyuki (SoulTaker) Bakemonogatari is an eccentric show centered on paranormal adventures of Araragi Koyomi, former vampire, and his love interest Senjougahara Hitagi, self-proclaimed psychotic tsundere. It follows the tried and true path of episodic "ghost story" themed anime telling one mysterious tale at a time. However, unlike xxxHolic or Natsume Yuujinchou, Bakemonogatari does its stuff with so much style and peculiarity that it easily gets a spot on the "good" side of the genre, along with Mushishi and Mononoke.
If there was a word to sum up this show it would be "perplexing". Not only I was perplexed at the art-show like direction and brilliant dialogue which makes you feel the author was weird in the head, I was even perplexed at my own feelings regarding this show. Frankly, Bakemonogatari kind of reminded me of the last year's Kurozuka, in the way how aesthetic sense which is usually secondary takes spotlight from what is usually main - plot. Unlike Kurozuka, however, Bakemonogatari also offers awesome character cast and story which, albeit weak, actually makes sense. In the end it all comes down to your preferences, if you are open to forgive faults for innovation you will most likely love Bakemonogatari, mostly due to its surreal direction and profound dialogue. Likewise, if you want your shows to start at a point A and follow to a point B, everything solid and simple, you will most likely drop Bakemonogatari after a few episodes. While I do indeed love good stories told well, the more anime I watch the more I feel inclined to enjoy bizarre stories told weird, and you bet, Bakemonogatari is one of them. What I find the most perplexing of all though, is the implausibly high average score of this show... could it be that an average otaku developed aesthetic sense when I wasn't looking?
Conclusion: Even though it follows a tried and true path, Bakemonogatari offers intuitive visuals and many thought provoking themes setting itself apart from the rest of the stuff of the genre and becoming one of the most original shows to grace anime realm. It will make your day if you can forgive faults for innovation and you will certainly love it if you favor aesthetic pleasures. If you are tired from your everyday stereotypical anime and you want something new - open your mind and put Bakemonogatari on your screen. I can't guarantee you'll like it, but you will likely remember it, at least for its visual presentation. You might actually want to check SoulTaker out if you've liked this, at least, direction wise.
