based on a manga that now I'm eager to find and read Shadow Skill is a short fighting/fantasy/RPG anime that succeeds in delivering the classic elements of the genre. Epic fights with various monsters, collaboration between different characters with magical or fighting abilities, nice settings, decent musical score and nice animation (though the characters were ugly).

I cant say much about the story since I havent read the manga, but I could grasp some introductory elements. So better read the manga before watching the OVA for a good story.

The characters were very good for their role, especially Elle (typical Megumi Hayashibara, though not as good as Lina Inverse). Except her brother who didnt have time to be an interesting character.

I rented the title.
Overall a good rental but instead of buying it I'd suggest reading the manga.
Worth watching once or twice.

First af all there are 4 OVA. I've seen 1-3 as a movie and the 4th separately. This is the way they should be rated, because is a BIG difference between them.

1-3OVA:
Story! Where is it? There are revealed just a few (and uninterested) slices of the caracter lifes. But it is a figthing anime.. so at least the animation should be great: NO! a totaly desaster.. at the end of the anime, it's obviously that the animators were realy bored or out of time.. doesen't mather anyway. The only thing that keept my attention was the fighting scene during the credits. I've sed: "I want that, in sted of everyting seen before!!!" But... surprise! that it's part of the 4th OVA ^_^.

OVA4: This last part, take place after the Tv series, and got everything you need. Forget the first 3 OVAs (don't even warth watch that). You finnaly find what the "shadow skill" is about, that Scarface actually can fight not just talk, and the animation is splendid.

I'll rate just the 4th OVA.

Filled with insipid dialogue, tasteless characters, and a nearly non-existent story, this short OVA is clearly a waste of time.

A stupid fantasy-OVA with plenty of fighting and monsters - and a plot that reminds me of the RPGs I played when I was ten years old.

I bought the DVD on a whim from an auction-site, having not bothered to find any information about Shadow Skill beforehand. I falsely assumed that for such a cheap price (less than 5 euros), I could not be disappointed. I was wrong. Shadow Skill is a fighting anime with some of the most boring fights I've ever seen. There's nothing "martial" and even less "art" in the "Shadow Skill" of these characters - they just jump and kick and do some stupid moves, and the monsters will have their arms and heads cut off. Yippee.

The story manages to do the impossible: despite it's utter simplicity ("I need to fight to get stronger") it succeeds in confusing the audience with clumsy storytelling and pointless semi-philosophical lines. Not to mention the poorly motivated cardboard-piece characters, whose designs are very inconsistent throughout the OVA.

(For the sake of clarity, let me explain what the Shadow Skill OVA consists of in terms of episodes. According to various online sources, there are actually four episodes of Shadow Skill made in 1995 and 1996. The first episode is a self-contained story and is sometimes referred to as Shadow Skill OVA 1. The remaining three episodes form the Shadow Skill OVA 2, which has been released in the west as one long "movie". Timeline-wise, the OVA 2 precedes the OVA 1 and to make things even more confusing they are actually presented in that order - OVA 2 first, OVA 1 then - on the DVD.)

From a visual standpoint, Shadow Skill is extremely disappointing. There is one good-looking scene, where two characters stand atop a high cliff and the "camera" circles around them, but the rest of the anime looks hideous; especially the OVA 2. From jagged movements to poor action-scenes, from recycled frames to numerous still-shots and from ugly characters to horrible colouring, this is one of the worst-looking anime-series from the nineties. Had it been made in the early eighties, I'd still consider it only average for its time. By today's standards Shadow Skill ranks very low. There are a few clever directional tricks, like split-screens and such, but they are far too rare to save much.

The sound-effects are equally bad, and the voice-acting is not much better. There are a couple of good background-tunes with an appropriate amount of pompousness for fights, but the lousy booms and retarded yelling ruin even those scenes.

The DVD-release by Manga Entertainment has all the episodes of the second OVA mangled together into some sort of a movie as previously mentioned. Apart from that, there's nothing particularly wrong with the release - the content of the series is just so much below average that no release of Shadow Skill could ever be worth much. Still, I did read the character bios with mild amusement.

Overall, with bad action-scenes and even worse storytelling, Shadow Skill is one of the worst anime-titles I've ever bothered to watch all the way through, and I'm damn happy I got rid of the DVD.

Disapointing compared to the series.

A waste of time. Except for the fourth OVA (The Epilog), it's a simplification of the series (which wasn't very complicated anyway).
The fourth OVA is more interesting, it comes after the series and advances the story a bit. We even see, at least, one of the high powers of Kuruda do something else apart talking and acting superior : Scarface can fight. Of course he does that without moving, he's Scarface after all. That's great.
Irony aside, the last OVA only is worth watching. The origin of the shadow skills is even revealed and is very original. If it was possible to note specifically that OAV, I would give it more points.

This is pretty decent. Very cool action which dominates over any other aspect of the anime.

The visuals are pretty superb, and as mentioned before, there is very cool action to be seen. This is animated pretty well and proves quite satisfying.

The sound isn't really comment-worthy. It's good. That's about it. What stops it from getting a perfect score is just a matter a taste - I wouldn't say I was engaged by the musical score as much as other anime films.

The story can seem to get a little weak at times but overall it's fine. This is very much a pilot for the series, and this shows through, with many elements being set up but not completed.

The characters are all very nice to watch. I was rooting for te heroes and hating the bad guys. That's how it should be.

The replay value is about average. This is much to do with how the film never really completes the story (since it's more or less a pilot for the series).

Overall I like this anime. It's worth checkin out.
