| Really really nice manga. The characters are very weel built, the basketball issue is quite realistic, and also is a really funny manga. It is not difficult to understand why is the second manga most sold ever (though is not that easy to undesrtand why is not the first one).

| This is a classic manga from 1990-1994 if I am not mistaken. It tells the story of the slamdunk anime. Chances are you have seen the anime first, then read the manga as the anime stops just before they head on to the nation finals. That was what I did, and suprise suprise, some scenes are different from the anime but overall it does not spoil the story line.

| Some manga are popular because they are good. Others are popular because they're bad. And some are popular simply because they're a blast. Slam Dunk is one of the latter. Subtlety, intelligence and insight are not its forte—though when necessary it can display (low) degrees of all three—and profundity is the farthest thing from its mind. Slam Dunk just wants to have fun. And it does—in spades.

| Slam Dunk is a very classic manga - one that most likely everyone familiar with anime/manga knows or has read. All of this is for good reason: it is very entertaining. From extremely well choreographed basketball games to gripping street fights, Slam Dunk is chock full of fun elements. To top it off, the basketball team's chemistry is very unique and, at times, moving. Another aspect that is enjoyable is how much effort is put into the drawings of facial expression. I can practically feel the tension through the players' facial expressions alone. Put all of this together, and we have a very unforgettable sports manga.
Slam Dunk's humor relies on Sakuragi's know-nothingness about basketball. Initially, he begins as a hot-tempered yet very atheletic character who always got in fights. As he learns how to play basketball, we get to see numerous hilarious scenes as Sakuragi fouls out almost every game, taunts the audience and opposing players, and causes a ruckus wherever he goes. Although there are other methods of humor, they are very insignificant and unimpressive.
There are a few weaknesses, however. For starters, those who like a very well-rounded story as found in Hajime no Ippo will bound to be disappointed. Slam Dunk doesn't have much off-court character development or off-court character chemistry. Most of the manga proceeds directly from game to game, with very little events happening in between. Furthermore, unlike many other sports mangas, all of this takes place within a single school year! Sakuragi and the rest of Shohoku's team have to manage to somehow improve so much in such a short period of time. Most of the time, all of the skill and character developments are within the game - as they make some sort of realization (well, mostly on Sakuragi's part). There's also the issue of the pointless side characters. The focus of this manga is clearly on Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi and to an extend the antagonists to these three characters respectively (e.g., Fukuda, Sendoh and Uozumi). We have characters like Haruka and Yohei who are supposed tp play an important role in Sakuragi's life, yet barely make a noticeable dent in our attention.
Anyway, knowing this ahead of time, perhaps one may get to enjoy Slam Dunk more. The games are extremely well done with a very high level of detail. Many panels are spent on portraying all the important moments in the game. There is a high level of tension as well as a good understanding of the game dynamics. For anyone who plays or played basketball, Slam Dunk is unforgettable. To those who want some side-character development or romance should just put those expectations aside and just enjoy Slam Dunk for its simplicity.

I knew that Slam Dunk was a popular manga and that it dealt with basketball. Thats why I hesitated to read it. Because now I dont like basketball that much as some years ago, especially after they changed some of the rules. Though I enjoy playing basketball a lot.
Fortunately I wasnt dissapointed. For a sports manga it does almost everything right and guarantees a high enjoyment factor. Some matches were so tense that I remembered why I used to like watching basketball before my interest faded away.
The basketball matches as depicted in the manga are as realistic as possible, with defense and offense systems adequately explained even for those unfamiliar with the game. I havent seen on TV or film basketball adaptations any similar level of detail. Only flaw is that if a score is tight till the final minutes, no time-outs or intentional fouls are given. This would make Slam Dunk even more exciting, since the mangaka knows already a lot about the game.
The main characters are very good too. Though initially I expected them to have the usual shallowness of a sports manga and think of nothing else but basketball, the way they think and act on court reflects their personality exactly as in their lifes outside the court. Their opponents as well, even if only 20 % of the manga focuses on events outside the court.
Sakuragi (PF) is one explosive character, an extreme egoist who thinks the world and the game revolves around him and almosts acts individualistically. In the manga slowly the readers watch him evolve from a complete novice, not knowing even the basics, to a mature player that becomes an ace in rebounds. He's overall a very funny character that makes the manga moments outside the court less boring.
Rukawa (SF) is the quiet type of guy who likes to speak on the court. When his sleep is disturbed he can be also very violent. He is even more individualistic than Sakuragi and only in the final volumes his character turns more interesting, surpassing all the others.
His catch phrase is ''Dou ahou'' that means ''idiot''.
Akagi (C) is the basketball captain and he is the most stable character. As a center he is the best of the region. He has a hard time disciplining Sakuragi but often puts up with his peculiarities and encourages every player during the game. A born leader.
Later in the manga Mitsui (SG) and Mishashi (PG) appear that have their own story but generally the manga focuses on Sakuragi, Rukawa and Akagi.
The girls Ayako and Haruko act just as supporting characters. The characters of the opponents are also shown on court and some of them (Shendo) are impressive.
What makes the manga worth reading though is how well orchestrated a basketball match is. It will keep you hooked and the last volume will make you feel like watching a classic basketball game full of tension.
If you're a basketball fan you'll like this manga. If not then regard it simply as one of the best sports mangas around.
