Take foxy animal spirits, add a shy country boy with hidden talents and toss in a well rounded cast of support characters and you have the potential for a wonderful anime.

Unfortunately, the 12 episode Kanokon anime did not reach its potential. It was not until I went and started to read the manga that much of the plot line came out. I rated the story so high because it is a great story ... but the anime told it poorly.

Kanakon is about a boy named Kouta and a fox spirit named Chizuru that is infatuated with him. They go to a school in which a substantial portion of the students (and faculty) are spirits and live in an environment where relationships between spirits and humans are frowned upon.

The idea behind the series was really good but the implementation fell short of what I was expecting. Note that there is an enormous amount of fan service in this show, including some that I would outright put in the hentai category. Younger audiences steer clear!

Also note that I have not read the manga and so did not have any background with the characters before watching this.

Light and fluffy for the most part; a generally enjoyable diversion from heavy and deep stories. We all need that from time to time.

The ecchi aspect of the story fits well with any young man's fantasy as he begins to experience the hormonal rush of puberty but it distracted from time that could have been spent taking the main characters from the 2d perspective presented and give them some depth and reason. As if rushed to a conclusion, I wished a number of nagging details about Kota and why he was a target of so much 'puppy love' was explored to a greater extent.

Still, I enjoyed the overall result and hope to see the story and background developed in the future. Too many questions and plot threads remained at the conclusion and it left me feeling somewhat cheated.

Well, as another reviewer said, this came as close as you can to being hentai without actually being hentai. They even have some licking action in one of the later episodes that I thought would definately be under some sort of hentai section.

With that aside, I actually enjoyed Kanokon. While Im not a big ecchi fan this was good enough for plenty of laughs.

Kanokon is the tale of Oyamada Kota, a young lad entering high school. One day, he meets up with Minamoto Chizuru, a young kitsune that falls in love with him. Together, they set off on some weird adventures. Also joining in is Ezomori Nozomu, a wolf spirit woman and the brothers of both women. However, it seems that when Kota kisses Chizuru, they transform into a super-powerful kitsune that is unstoppable.

At first, I wasn't really sure where this anime was going. In my opinion, this series came as close to becoming a hentai as one could without actually becoming one. It seemed like it wanted to be an action/comedy with a lot of ecchi content, then turned out to be more of love-romance/comedy with a lot of ecchi content with some hints of action. Overall, it isn't bad, the story is horribly nerfed in the anime and from reading the character bios, the manga sounds kinda good! After watching the last episode, it really left me wanting more... If you are looking for a comedy/ecchi anime that doesn't require much thinking, has some plot holes, but has great animation and some action, I do recommend this series. Please read the rest of this review for further details!
