A schoolboy living with his crush meets an unusual girl with a weird thing for chickens and red berries. True Tears is a strong and thoughtful series with some unanswered plot points.

You may be wondering: is this guy a lunatic? He's giving True Tears a 9/10 for every aspect. Whether you think True Tears deserves a higher/lower score or not is completely up to you.

Rarely have I seen an anime which is consistent; whether it being the art, or the fact that the quality of the episodes remain the same (which is a good thing, mind you) even as the series progresses. Quality degradation or the feeling of the show being rushed towards the middle of a series is too common nowadays.

There was a lack of fanservice, which is a huge relief from recent shows which emphasise too much on it. If I remember clearly (which I probably do, since I finished the show a day ago), True Tears only had two scenes which were remotely close to fanservice- three, if you're really strict on this sort of stuff. I'm surprised that I can count them, since most have too many per episode for me to remember. The show remains serious in nature, despite some "funny" scenes or "comical relief" every once in a while.

True Tears is definitely a must-watch love-romance anime. Everything about is is solid and impressive, though none of those areas are top of its game, as there are always other shows which surpass this level of excellence presented by True Tears.

True tears; different reviewers of different personality types ask different questions when it comes to the style and preference of their anime. Mine was: are these tears, really 'true tears'? Kind of eccentric maybe; but not so if you watch this truly unique series.

I must pin certain medals on this anime. It has [downright] excellent music and animation. The animation is superb throughout, and I was thoroughly impressed with it. It didn't have anything particularly 'epic' about it, for example, the artistic display in "Ef", but it made up for that with just great consistency and quality.

The music is fantastic as well, without a doubt. The piano pieces are beautiful and the opening is a clear winner. Had me hooked from the start, and it never loses its 'power' since then.

I started the series with pretty high expectation given the previous two categories, and the very positive reviews on this site. Though the first episode was rather slow, I was ready to forgive. In fact, the first few episodes put a relatively positive spin for me in terms of sentiment for the series. However, despite how much I wanted to love this series to death, little by little over time ugly-problems began to poke their faces out of annoying holes, and before I knew it, something had gone terribly awry.

The golden badge bestowed due to excellent music and animation is softly torn off because of a few problems with its story and execution. Let me refer to my previous quote concerning the enigmatic 'true tears'. Are these really 'true' tears? In other words, is the anime beyond excellent sound and animation, or is it just a pretty girl that becomes dull after you get to know her? Unfortunately, and I highly emphasize my regret in this decision, this anime was just that girl.

The fact that my tone holds regret however is proof of how great this anime sets everything up. Like reviewers previous to mine, this anime seemed to have genuine 'authenticity', of which I value greatly. No annoying characters. No cheap ecchi panty shots cheapening the characters. Beautiful character designs. Unique personalities. But what went wrong?

The 'thing' that went wrong wasn't exactly that there was even 'a thing' that went wrong. There were 'many' things that went wrong! And it isn't that I don't like anime that have characters of eccentric personalities (like Haruhi). And it's not like I don't like anime that have long periods of nothingness (like Renmei). And it's certainly not that I don't like anime with a dramatic feel (like Ef). But True Tears, does not 'execute' itself in a fashion that makes you care. It doesn't make you feel for the characters. And it pulled a couple of taboo "omg please don't do that.. oh what?! you actually...?!" moves. In addition, there were many 'plot devices' and minor characters that served little purpose or value. It had a theme that it introduced, but did not fully develop or explain in a coherent manner. And it had moments of forced scenes that were unconvicing and full of awkwardness; and if that were not enough, it had moments of 'magical transformation', where characters would act completely out of character like someone had replaced them with a reprogrammed model of themselves the next morning..

I must digress and shortly revert back to the sentiment of 'woefully' marking this series lower than I wanted to: And the reason why is because there were beautifully designed characters and great music, two things I love. In addition, the story has moments that WERE orchestrated wonderfully. But the problem is that especially with anime that have been coming out these past couple of years, there is little excuse for so many mistakes. The anime had simply too many 'I can't possibly believe/accept this' moments and too little of "I totally know how they feel" moments. And it's not that I don't like an 'unbelievable fantasy-based' storyline (Futakoi Alternative), but it's the WAY that it is pulled off that matters. Let me give you an example. In KGNE, the main character develops feelings for a certain individual virtually overnight. Lesser keen individuals would find this 'touching' but more observant-OCD ones would be bothered/pestered by this 'inconsistency' throughout their relationship. Inconsistencies and incontinuity ruin a story's feel, no matter how 'fantasy-like' its meant to be.

True tears has a few unfortunate 'KGNE-moments' where you're going "What? There is no way they would've done that", etc. Essentially, there are elements that don't add up. And too many items are introduced with poor closure and development. And perhaps the worst of all, the main character ended up following a cliche story of having all the girls in the world love him to death, while he annoyingly created melodrama out of thin air due to his indecisive nature, while reacting to a certain plot device that I felt was crudely thrown in, and then in an equally gross manner ripped out. And it's not that I do not like main characters with indecisive natures (Ef and Suzuka); like I mentioned previously, its the 'way' it's executed. Is the indecisiveness genuine? Can I believe that this is happening, even in the fantasy-context. Are these tears "true tears", or are they littered with a glossy finish that covers fools gold? Did the writers care about their unfinished motifs?

It is unfortunate because I loved a certain 'feel' of the series; however, there are just simply too many problems. The characters seem hollow and many times I had to force myself to continue watching the series in hope that it would make me start feeling something genuine. And in Ef Tale of Memories, that's exactly what they did, but after 3 episodes. By episode 12 of True Tears, I had realized that the tears were not true at all. They were forced tears; the anime had in a way mocked itself.

With all this said, I have no ultimate quarrel with true tears. It had many promising characteristics (music and animation), and like I mentioned previously, not all of the plot/characters fell through. There were a 'couple' of gem moments that made me feel that there was hope. However, this golden-badge has to be removed because 'lack of authenticity' is a serious crime. As I mentioned previously, this anime 'seems' completely genuine; it lacks cheap nude shots and annoying waitress characters like KGNE; it also has many silent moments in a Renmei fashion. Plot inconsistencies and unreal characters/decisions with unresolved arcs, however, 'very unfortunately' rendered my emotions unattached. I felt some sort of a 'Black Cat' syndrome, where the beginning was promising, but because of a lack of 'effort' or so it seems, the series slowly began to fall apart the further it traveled. And like Black Cat, I wanted it to do well, so I felt a little let down.

The end result? Something that tried to do too many things at once and ended up losing on a few fronts. An "A+" concept with a "B-" execution. Great animation/music with a semi-cliche story with a few good moments, but much too many incontinuities. To top it off, characters that are too 1 dimensional and are forgotten easy, like a cute girl that is actually vain and quite empty-headed.

I'd say maybe this is another anime that separates two groups of romance fans: the keen who become bothered by the details and the others who aren't. In short, if you enjoyed KGNE (also good animation/sound with plot/character problems) because you did not feel very much bothered by 'incongruencies' with character and story, you might like this one. Otherwise, be warned, because the nonsensical plot directions and lack of feel may either put you to sleep or just disappoint you, like it did with me

You know, sometimes when I am looking for a new anime to watch, I come across an anime that I passed over time and time again thinking that it wouldn't be good. I decide to watch said anime and get so drawn in that I pull an all-nighter to finish the series.

Well, this is exactly the case with True Tears. I started watching it at 3 a.m. and now I just finished at 10:53 a.m.

From the very first episode I was drawn in, I was hooked and I could not escape. I never would have thought a slow starting anime could hold me in like this, no slow starting anime has ever made it passed the first five episodes with me. I guess I should get on with the review.

I was really looking forward for this short anime series, so my expectations where a bit higher than with other animes I've seen lately.

Even from the beginning, it was evident that a lot of effort was put into graphical styling, voice acting and musics, which really impressed me. We must remember that this was the first anime for the P.A.Works -studio.

At the end, I was somewhat satisfied, although the main plot was quite plain. It was just that the other (reviewed) categories did good impression that they where able to clear out the mistakes.

What I must point at this moment was that I received strange deja wu from True tears when I started to remember AIR tv and the movie versions. I wonder why?

True Tears start like a simple anime. All there is are: one men - Nakagami Shinichirō (I think of him as a men not a boy, his too well emotionaly developed for his age, this is a plus for him) and three girls. Shinichiro is a student, and a hobby drawer, he draws a book for children. His live seems simple with father (owner of a small manufactory), mother and a 'stepsister' of some kind (but about her in a moment, let me finish about him). He is a simple mind and a simple man at the start of the story.
It all complicates with the girl living in his house (the socalled 'stepsiter'). Her name is Yuasa Hiromi. They are the same age, and they attend the same school. Shinichiro hase a difficult fealing about and to her. She is a free soul, easy in contact, plays bascetball and is able to do many things in her live. But as they live together she never smiles in home, never laughs. It bothers him to no end. It seems she was a douther of his parends friend, and now she is an orphen, adopted by his parends.
As well in the first episode we are introduced to another girl - Isurugi Noe (the one on the picture). She is a nice and energetic girl, but with all her vigor she is not able to cry. She claims she was 'robbed' by her grandmother from her tears. She is trying to find her tears or to find someone able to do it for her. It is no suprise Shinichiro is her type for that quest.
But it is not the end of the line. Aiko Andō his friend and his closest friends (Nobuse Miyokichi) girlfriend, has an emotional crush on him as well.
So a trio of girls and a boy with emotional disorder. It is a perfect start, really.

Animation is done like for the 2008 year well, perfect. There were no scens I saw with chaos or perturbations. The way the girls are drawn and the movement of heroes is linked one with another is exellent. I like the eyes and it's deep color, the hear - specialy Hiromis with white snow around.
Sound is done good, the wind blows, the waves move and make a sound, the drops of tears and the voice of the girls works perfect. END and OPED songs are well singed and well done.
The story is complicated, I was not able to predict it to the very end, wich girl will have his heart? No idea. Plus the uncommon way of installing a chicken in the anime - never have I predicted such use of a simple animal.
One of the perfections in the series are the characters. Heroes evolve during each episode and each time scip. It makes them not chidren but adults. I love them all, overall Hiromi, but Ai-chan is done and evolves extreamly great. Even Noe is perfect, well I dont like how she acts towards Shinichiro, but I know it makes the anime move.

This series was the greatest romance in the 2008 anime season by far (I'm writing this in April 2008). It has all it needs and all there is required for it. Good story, exellent characters, social and emotion perfection as well as a load of humor and etics.

I enjoyed this series, all minutes and seconds of all 13 episodes. It was a little short i will admit, but it was enough and fair for me.

In the end I strongly recomend this title, you will have a great time and a great amusement watching 'True Tears'.

True Tears was a delight for this season. This is probably one of the most believable harem/romance series that I have watched. There isn't any magic, fan-service panty shots, guys trying to do every girl he meets, etc. It's just about a group of people and the difficulties they experience in conveying how they feel about each other.

This series starts out a bit slow but develops quickly into a dramatic standoff where you can't tell which way it's going to go. This is a really well done piece of work and really worth a watch (or two). Note that this is purely a drama/romance and NOT a comedy (sort of KGNE-ish but with less exposure).

For a first-time project for P.A. Works, I was definitely impressed with True Tears. Given the rather sad Winter '08 season for animes, I was happy to find this gem among the other sub-par series. Anyway, onto the review...

They say "a picture is worth a thousand words," and I believe that was how True Tears was played out: a moving collection of pictures (not literally of course). True Tears never wasted words. Many if not all of the conversations and interactions were imbued with implied and/or symbolic meanings. In a sense, most of the drama stems from such ambiguity. Also because of the way True Tears presented itself, I'd say you can't really watch this series with your brain off. I mean, you can, but you'll probably miss all the deeper meanings behind each conversation/action. In my book, this was what made True Tears so interesting and worth-watching that came in addition to the drama/romance, consistently beautiful animation, fitting soundtrack, great voice-acting, and identifiable characters. Overall, I'd recommend this anime to anyone given how well done it is.

Just a note, True Tears got licensed in America practically the third week it aired in Japan. Very few shows get licensed that early, which goes to show what a great series it is. I for one will be pre-ordering the DVDs once Bandai Visual releases the DVDs...(here's to hoping it is soon)

Lastly, I'd recommend people watching True Tears in one sitting as some of the cliffhangers were just painful given how MISLEADING the previews for each episode were on purposely done.

This was just a random anime that I saw in a random anime website and I decided that I was going to check what was this anime about since I love Harems.

The animation was all right. I personaly liked it. The only thing I didn't like much was the fact that in some episodes they used computers to animate the classmates which made everything look rather funny. Other than that the anime was pretty good.

The story is based on Shinchiro who happens to be a regular school boy who meets up with Noe which is our heroine of the story. Noe happens to be a girl who can't cry for some reason or another. The story is based on her and getting her tears back and Shinchiro happens to be the perfect guy to bring back her tears. There's also something about a Flying chikcken and like a hectagon of love. It's not a love Triangle anymore. The story is rather slow at the beggining, but it gets interesting after a while.

Characters were ok. I liked Shinchiro. He was a normal kid who kinda did a normal choice and not a fan service type of choice( I'm talking about the ending chapters). Noe was a little bit weird, but even though she was weird she was a very nice character. Hiromi was a little bit of an emo girl at first, but after understanding her past you'll know why she important. Aiko...Well she was just there in love with Shinchiro. This anime has very good character development which was one of the things that kept me interested to this anime. Shinchiro, Hiromi, and Noe did a lot of growing up from episode 1 to 13.

I enjoyed everything about this anime...Except the ending. They could have change it a little. It was a cute ending and I think either girl would have been good for him, but that ending was a bit too bland for my taste. Then again True Tears is the actual name of the anime, so I guess there's no fighting it. Overall, it was a nice anime, but not something I would take the time to watch again.

Being the show that I wanted to see the most in Winter 2008 season. I expected a lot from True Tears and once the first episode came out I sort of shrugged it off, but as the episode number kept on increasing. The drama in this show got better and better and suddenly True Tears became an excellent show. True Tears is slow at the beginning, but begins to build momentum through the episodes and it ends fairly nicely and concludes everything. Though some people may be mad at what girl gets chosen at the end.

The OP was nice and it was the same singer who sang the CLANNAD OP, so that was a plus. The animations during the opening sequence was really pretty. I mean the leaves just look at them it looks just like autumn glory. The ED song was decent and show little chibi characters walking across the screen. Background music was fairly well done with a slow piano song of the OP song during the sad moments of the show. I'm a sucker for slow piano songs of the OP song, just like at the ending for Zero no Tsukaima.

The story is well done and doesn't fall into the panties and the typical harem stuff. All the girls aren't "I'll show you my panties, so you'll love me more." NO. All the girls actually have a mind of their own and if they don't get the guy then they move on not just mope about it. Story is pretty typical and it's about a guy with relationships with three girls. Though one girl is knocked out pretty early in the anime, so it's basically two girls. But I was so split among the two that I didn't know who he was going to choose just like KGNE. So YAY! For drama. Some people will probably flame this show, because the main guy didn't choose the girl he liked.

Characters. The main male lead is Shinichiro who is basically a typical harem male lead. I didn't find him all that interesting, but I wasn't annoyed by him at least. Let's just get to the girls. We have Isurugi Noe who is the energetic sort of weird girl, who for some reason can't shed tears hence the title of the anime True Tears. Then we have her rival Hiromi and she's like the nice girl, but she's not as honest about herself and there may be a connection with her and Shinichiro's mom. Of course there's Aiko who we don't see as much, but she plays somewhat of an important role. I guess. Sort of. Just watch the show. XD. The side character were well done like Shinichiro's Mom who I disliked at the beginning, but by the end I really liked her. Same thing with Shinichiro's best friend who I thought was annoying at first, but actually contributes to the story near the end.

True Tears was a show that doesn't fall into the typical panties romance show. Or the fantasy romance show with intense magical powers. Instead it's a romance show done right, the drama is intense at some moments, not during the beginning though. The animations are solid and show the power of the animations in 2008. Pretty good soundtrack with nice background music. PIANO MUSIC! Characters that are believable and not so strange and so out there. And it delivers a pretty good ending as well I recommend True Tears and if you only saw the first episode, I recommend you go watch more, because it doesn't get good until episode four.

Based on the game of the same name and a first project for P.A. Works, true tears is a romance/love-triangle anime that is completely unrelated to the game it is based on except for its name. In either case, tt is a typical romance filled with drama based on the theme of tears and the effects of love on them. It is a gem of romance anime if only for its amazing animation and being anger-inducing because of its girls, along with an above-average male lead and best friend. Though you won't get a KGNE or School Days out of this, tt is still a fine love story bringing fine entertainment for those who love drama.

The first aspect to hail upon in its Winter 2008 season is its exceptional animation quality. Nearly on the same quality as Kyoto Animation series, P.A. Works creates a beautiful autumn/winter and a lively town filled with people, eliminating the sense of character isolation from the atmosphere (as you well know, the main characters are not suppose to be the only people in the world). Appealing character designs and the fine movements of them really makes the characters seem real. There is a lot of background interaction, especially during the crowded school hours some scenes take place at. The only downfall in this category is the use of 3D models, which are out of place even though they are animated just as stunningly as the 2D drawings. One more thing that bothered me is the use of watercolor stills, which were nice the first time around but got annoying later, as if the animators got lazy.

The music in tt is also great. I really like the OP "Reflectia" as well as the ED "Sekai no Namida (the World's Tears)". The background music is also nothing short of beautiful, but if you notice them enough you might be irritated with repeats. The ED also shows all the characters in the show, but its a shame I never noticed when the tanuki appears, because it doesn't! Weird. The voice acting is superb as well. I don't notice any names here, but each one to its own character. For the mostly calm tone, everyone is pretty calm; in times of drama, they manage to stay calm while evoking the characters' emotions. That said, the animation and sound goes well together.

tt is mostly original and written by a woman, so most elements of typical high-school love dramas are toned down in stupidity. That said, tt manages to be fine in the love category, but falls apart along the way in the drama and theme categories. It starts out grippingly with the set up of the characters and their relationships, as well as the theme of tears (that is actually quite weak and is barely a part of the main story). The story progresses at a slow and calm pace, but is just as gripping as an anime with a fast and rushing pace (like the aforementioned KGNE and SD). The emotional build up is strong through carefully thought out dialogues and character interactions, even if they can be awkward because of character personalities. The downfall starts (if only because I started to follow this weekly on episode 7) in the latter half of the show... because it starts doing the pendulum swing that angers the two factions rooting for their girls. While the writing is still very good, the drama starts to tarnish in quality: Noe's route affected by its weak theme; Hiromi's route affected by the sudden change in character of Shin's mom. The show points one way or the other very unpredictably, all the way up to the final 10 minutes of the last episode, which, while very entertaining, is also very frustrating to watch. The plot twists ALMOST seem to come out of nowhere, and the cliffhangers got annoying. The ending is kinda rushed (not enough time for satisfactory ending scenes). The theme is not brushed aside, but its role is like an extra character that didn't do much but was part of the plot. BUT, if I did watch this all in a row, then I probably would not have noticed these things, because the episodes would flow into each other and the emotional levels built to an all-time high.

As for the characters, they are some of the most decent ever written. For the male leads, Shinichiro is quite competent (though his character design says no), and his artist angle makes him smarter than other main male leads; Miyokichi actually has his own story, so he isn't as annoying as other best friend archetype roles, and he is also likable from his optimistic personality. The girls are also all likable, but one of them is completely useless. Noe, the eccentric girl, is to fall for (and I was behind this faction). Hiromi starts out sympathetic, then develops her own motivations. Aiko... is complicated. As for the side characters, the only one I couldn't spot was the tanuki. Shin's mom is a strange plot device, as she was turned "off" for not enough reasons (but she did remove an obstacle for the Hiromi route). Jun... is also complicated. However, the best thing about the characters is how "realistic" they acted, like something coming from a live-action romance/drama (and thankfully not like real teenagers, or else this show was NOT written by a woman). Though there are some frustrating lines in certain scenes, all the characters acted out of their true motivations and feelings. The only thing I didn't like was the usage of characters appearing at the right time as the script calls for even though their appearances were justifying and timely.

I really enjoyed tt to the very end, even though it was obvious who the main girl was (supported by ample amounts of fanservice). If I watched this all in a row, I wouldn't have been so disappointed. However, I can only recommend this to people who love their dose of romance/drama anime, if only because tt falls apart in the latter half of the show, with high promises set in the beginning crushed by disappointment if you go any further.

"true tears" is by far the best romance anime of the January 08 season. Although this series has that harem tinge the characters still blow me away and the plot was extremely engrossing. Although I've only seen up to episode 12, second to last episode, I'm going to say its in the league of KgNe as a neo-romance anime of 08.
I only watched till twelve cuz usually the last episode biases everything for me.... Usually for the worst, such as in H20 which had a bitter sweer ending... :(

Its animation certainly is good, not surprising for an 2008 anime. There were some fantastic scenery that actually captured the beauty of the various characters in the foreground. It could be what keeps me going for the rest of the series.....

The sound are good too, i like the opening theme, quite peace instilling. BGM also came up at the right time to accentuate the atmoshpere.

About its story, it sure is cliched. Just like any other anime , this super dense guy is love by 3 beautiful girls for absolutely no reason... not sure how he feels himself...afraid of hurting others... ba ba ba . Spinning the anime into a dangerous cocktail of chaos. The way it ended doesn't help either. The way they talk(or how thw writer made them talk) was incoherent with plenty of poetry, making it hard for viewers to understand the characters, or maybe i am just too dumb to understand.

Well the character were well designed, with a considerable amount of time spend on explaining each character's personality and how they feels individually. There doesn;t seems to be any extra character who shows up just for the sake of showing up. I especially like Noe, who has an eccentric personality like that of suzumiya haruhi, and especially hate shinchiro with a wooden block like personality(just like the protagonist of all crappy harem).
Well.. the vaule, doesn;t see much of it, except it showcases the unlikely situatuion of a few equally beautiful loving one dense headed boy without much appealing quality.
I certainly enjoyed this aniem for the first 2-3 episode, but it is short-lived. The story drags on and on like other cliched harem anime and that throws me off. It was able to pull of through all the 13 episode though.

I recommand this aniem for those who wished to see a improved harem anime with the same cliched story, the only improved part where animation and characters though. I, myself is quite disappointed in this anime as i am expecting a heart-warming, tear jerking anime.
