Minami-ke Okawari is the 13 episode sequel to the anime series Minami-ke. Released in 2008, Okawari diverges from the comedy aspects of Minami-ke and attempts to focus more on character development and storyline.

The shift between highly detailed character expressions and normal anime expressions was one of the things which made the original Minami-ke unique and welcome to watch. Okawari falls short in this respect as it significantly reduces the occurrences of these shifting moments, forfeiting one of the main graphical aspects of the anime. Otherwise, Okawari looks identical to Minami-ke both from a design and quality perspective.

The cast of voice actors are carried over from Minami-ke, and therefore the quality of the voices are maintained. Newly introduced characters are equally well voiced, and although the background music is also reused, it complements the anime very well. The theme songs still remain cheerful, but but they fit in less well with the mood and storyline of the anime. Overall, Okawari does not sound as good as Minami-ke, but the difference is trifling.

Okawari leaves the facade of a comedy that was present in Minami-ke and attempts to become a more serious slice of life drama revolving around the everyday events of the characters. It fails miserably in this respect. Instead, Okawari gives off the same impression as filler episodes in long running anime series. Most of the stories covered do not develop to anything of significance, and ultimately the ending feels bland and lacklustre.

Okawari also attempts to develop the characters in the same was as it tried to develop the storyline. And, just like the storyline, it ends in utter failure. By significantly reducing the comedy present in the anime, Okawari essentially erased the unique personalities of its characters. Their actions and dialogue seem unconvincing, and they lose the appeal and shine they had on viewers in Minami-ke. Sure, the occasional moment of sparkle is still present, but it is dull and few when compared to Minami-ke.

As a comedy lover, I found Minami-ke Okawari disappointing. It lacked the humour from the first series, didn't have the quality a decent slice of life anime, and lacked the depth for a drama. The characters were also disappointing, as they appeared flavourless when compared to Minami-ke. Viewers who have been dying for a sequel to Minami-ke might find this anime enjoyable, but those who simply enjoyed the first series will be let down by Okawari.

Minami-ke was a humorous slice-of-life anime that earned its right just through the characters themselves. Minami-ke Okawari attempts to continue this while introducing a few new characters.

Sadly, the lack of any interest in the characters and confusion over character appearances due to animation changes hindered the series's ability to deliver.

If you liked Minami-ke to the point of needing more then watch this. If you need any semblance of action, drama, or plot in general you should look elsewhere.

One word came from my mouth when I first started watching Okawari and that was, "What happened to this show?" Ok, thats more than one word but Im sure you get the idea.

I was a little dissappointed with the second season, mainly with the animation change. I liked those tear-drop mouths, the animation style was actually one of the things that made the characters likeable. But...Im reviewing this anime, not comparing it to the first season so here I go...

Nevermind...I kept comparing it to the first...ah well, I will review while comparing but score while not.

This anime is ok, but really it is a big disappointment considering the first season was very very good. Because of this, I am not sure I want to keep both seasons of this anime. There is nothing wrong with it at all, only that the jokes are not as god as before, and most of the time its really just a show asbout the minami family.

Minami-ke Okawari is a second helping to the first series and for all the fans that wanted more more more of the first series. Guess what? You get it. New season means new changes which means a totally new animation company. So instead of tear drop mouths we have normal mouths, but personally I liked the style of the first series more. I also didn't like how all the characters in the background had like pure shaded faces. I don't know. I counted that as being lazy and just not putting the effort to draw background people.

The soundtrack is the same as the first season and helps itself to the same tunes the first season had. None of it's too inspiring and it's just there to get the job done. Voice actors are the same as the first season.

The story is the same as the first season and it's just a plain story about the lives of three girls, except everything just told in a much more funnier way. Some of the jokes and gags this time weren't as effective as the first season, so either the production company had a different way of telling the jokes or maybe the manga ran out of good jokes to tell.

There are some new characters, like Fuyuki, but he shows up there just to add some screen time to his face. I didn't like him that much. Of course some of the old characters return with their same personalities and flare. Except they might look different due to the face that the animation style has changed dramatically. But then again only some of the old characters return and some were just forgotten as yesterday's breakfast.

Minami-ke Okawari gives fans what they want which is another season. It's a good slice of life comedy that will ooze doodles of fun for the fans of the first series. For people who didn't like the first one then you probably won't be interested in this show at all. While not as good as the first season, Minami-ke Okawari succeeds in giving us another helping of the lives of the three sisters.

Minami-ke first season was awesome win, so what more win could you expect with the second season available in the next season!? Major win all the way!

Minami-ke ~Okawari~ (second helping) yet again depicts the three sisters' daily lives and the trouble they bring to their friends - more of the same old; though it still has the charms of the characters, they are the ones who keep this slightly-inferior season afloat from the ocean of awesome that was the first season. In other words, set your expectations low even though the first sets it too high.

First off, a change of animation companies (Doumu to Asread) also brings a change in art style, storyboard directors, and some changes due to lawsuits and stuff. Though the character designs resemble more to their manga counterparts, they are harder to draw, and so throughout Okawari there are some bad drawings here and there. Thankfully they don't impede the flow, and thankfully they kept the Bible Black faces, too. There are some characters forgotten and introduced that do impede the flow, though, and there are less running gags, too. But for the most part, Okawari is less than more the same as the first season - light tasteful humor made by awesome characters.

Several departments have to drop here for Okawari. Animation suffers as mentioned. For the characters, Okawari introduces the boy-next-door Fuyuki, who shows up only to waste screen time. Not only is he devoid of anything whatsoever, he can't get broken by Kana and is an attempt to force a little drama on the show. No wishful thinking could get even Chiaki to break him. Okawari is also devoid of Touma's brothers, who were awesome but somewhat forgotten. The stories suffer a little due to Fuyuki and the down-tone of the humor level. Some running gags were missing or were just not funny (fantasy scenes, the juice, etc.). Value drops due to all these things, though Okawari is still a decent sequel that I enjoyed very much despite these shortfallings that could disappoint other people more than it can me.

What the first season founds, Okawari builds more upon! That's right: it means MORE Mako-chan, MORE Hosaka, and MORE other good things! By the end of Okawari, Kana's playthings have essentially become broken beyond repair; Fujioka gets some pretty prime screen time (the other Fujioka); Haruka lives up to her nickname.

Minami-ke is not complete without some second helpings, so here's a cheer to a third season!
